How you lead begins with knowing who you are.

At the Center for Leadership Formation, we see the business world evolving and believe that in order to thrive, professionals must prepare for senior leadership — not just senior positions. As such, our award-winning Leadership Executive MBA (LEMBA) and Health Leadership Executive MBA programs go beyond delivering critical business knowledge to enhancing personal values, vision and leadership competencies. Each executive program provides an innovative, world-class education with an emphasis on leadership, business expertise and social responsibility. In addition to honing their business acumen, participants develop clarity of purpose, a sense of accountability and stronger relationships with colleagues. Our graduates make a real difference in their organizations and communities by discovering their own voices as leaders of influence.

Craig Jelinek (Sponsor) C.E.O., President, Costco Wholesale

“One of the important values of the Seattle University executive programs is that Costco employees get involved with other cultures, other people, other companies. It is really a great exchange of ideas for our management and for our company. We’ve grown so many people from Costco through Seattle University executive programs because of the one-on-one, the smaller groups and the support mechanisms that they give our employees.”

Executive Education Programs Summary

The Center for Leadership Formation (CLF) is the home of the executive programs offered by Seattle University‘s Albers School of Business and Economics. All programs begin with the Executive Leadership Certificate Program, offering business and healthcare professionals a rare opportunity to connect with one another. Our unique leadership foundation, combined with the business core and cross-industry interaction, provides an outstanding blend of information, connection and transformation. Certificate Program

DEGREE PROGRAMS

Executive Leadership Certificate Program (ELP)*

Both our LEMBA and HLEMBA programs provide comprehensive business content, including accounting, finance, economics and marketing, taught for the benefit of the strategic decision maker. Each program begins with the Executive Leadership Certificate Program (ELP).

An 8-month, deep dive into leadership for those in the business, healthcare and life sciences sectors. Participants reflect on who they are, how they are perceived and who they want to be as leaders. The program includes a residential retreat, advanced experiential learning, team projects, outreach activities and executive coaching. The outcome is a deeper knowledge of leadership, greater confidence in oneself and a keen awareness of the ethics and values that guide executive decisions. Participants leave with a stronger appreciation of the needs of our global commons and a sense of how their actions as leaders can effect positive change. * This program is unique to Seattle University. As a stand-alone graduate certificate, the ELP is also well suited for individuals who already hold an MBA or other graduate degree and are looking to enhance their leadership skills. The certificate is also suitable for those who may not be able to pursue a graduate degree at this time.

Leadership Executive MBA (LEMBA)

A 20-month program focusing on core business expertise, executive leadership and social responsibility for mid- to senior-level managers and directors in the business community. Following the ELP, the next three quarters focus on advanced business education, including the principles, tools and practices required of an effective leader. The final capstone quarter synthesizes the leadership and core business curriculum, challenging participants to explore and elevate their positions of social responsibility, as well as the influence they can have in their professional and personal lives. Health Leadership Executive MBA (HLEMBA)

A 20-month program offering mid- to senior- level health sector professionals and clinicians the opportunity to earn a master’s degree emphasizing leadership in business. The HLEMBA program features 17 credits specific to the healthcare and life sciences sector, with the opportunity to customize assignments to that sector in an additional 7 courses. Following the ELP, the next three quarters focus on business practices within the health industry (e.g., lean processes, quality improvement, specialized accounting, economic policy and marketing). The final quarter features curriculum and individual projects that challenge participants to explore and elevate their positions of social responsibility in their professional and personal lives.

What is an Executive MBA? An Executive MBA (EMBA) prepares the experienced manager or professional with both the skills and the principles that enable effective decision-making at strategic levels within organizations. Getting your EMBA will give you a tremendous advantage in your career, and with our approach, it can truly enhance your life. Our EMBA participants learn: • How to shape strategy…and how to use those strategies to make a better world. • How to inspire…and how to mobilize people for greatness. • How to drive results…and how to determine which results to drive.

Why Choose Seattle University? THE UNIQUENESS OF OUR PROGRAMS We prepare participants for high-impact, meaningful leadership, not just positions of power. Our programs differ in that we develop and integrate all of the following: • The interpersonal and ethical character of the leader. • An ability to maximize performance through effective execution. • Competence in communication and collaboration. • A sense of responsibility in using one’s leadership skills for the benefit of others. • Confidence in applying personal authenticity to influence others. • A focus on the social impact of business and organizational decisions.

Richelle Bagdasarian (Alumna ‘10) Director, Ambulatory Services, Virginia Mason Hospital

“Many healthcare organizations have leaders who understand either the business of healthcare or the clinical aspects. This program helps bridge those knowledge gaps common among healthcare leaders.”

Albers’ Leadership EMBA has been ranked for four consecutive years among the Top 25 Executive MBA programs nationally on the U.S. News and World Report list of America’s Best Graduate Schools.

CONVENIENT CLASS SCHEDULE All executive education programs meet once a month in compact, 3-day modules. While class attendance is critical for our experiential program, it is important to us that participants do not have to sacrifice their professional or personal lives to take such a valuable step in their careers.

OUR OUTSTANDING PROFESSIONAL NETWORK Our typical participant has 12 to 18 years of professional experience. Our programs bring together professionals from a wide range of industries, firms, job functions and backgrounds. This creates immediate, profound and sustainable connections. In our team-based classrooms, participants learn as much from their peers as they do their faculty. Our expert faculty, accomplished guest speakers, active alumni and networking events enable participants and their organizations to broaden their networks in ways that endure.

A thriving business community Seattle is exceptional in the number of homegrown businesses that have emerged as global companies with household names. Many of the most inspired leaders in the world live and work here, drawing on the people, ideas and culture of the Northwest to develop their vision for tomorrow. From technology and aerospace to biotech and coffee, the industries represented here are as diverse as they are accomplished—and our students draw on that spirit of leadership for their own inspiration.

ACCESS TO TOP FACULTY Seattle University executive participants are taught by Albers’ outstanding faculty–experts who are highly skilled at merging theory with practice in the classroom. Most have both industry and research experience, coupled with proven success instructing executive audiences.

David Jackson (Alumnus ‘09) Human Resources Business Leader, Bing Search, Microsoft Corporation

“One of the courses that I found most useful was Leadership Synthesis and Discernment. This class focused on: where are you on your leadership journey, what brought you to the current point, what are some of the issues, maybe blind spots, and where do you think you can go? Traditionally, I don’t think other programs ask those questions from the perspective of a leader.”

Jordan Gates (Sponsor) President and Chief Operating Officer, Expeditors International

“People should know how to understand the viewpoints of others before being placed in a position of leadership. When leaders understand those they lead, they are capable of effecting meaningful change in their people and in their organization as a whole. In these dynamic times, we need more leadership than management. Seattle University’s executive leadership programs have created a positive ‘learning laboratory’ for Expeditors’ executives to develop critical understanding skills to focus on the needs of others. We’ve seen a marked difference in the way those who have experienced the program interact, communicate and lead in our community and in our company.”
