SEATTLE ACADEMY ANNUAL REPORT
A CELEBRATION AND THANK YOU
From the Head of School and Board Chair
To Our Friends and Supporters,
As we move with excitement and anticipation into a 2024-2025 school year, we want to pause and reflect on a 2023-2024 year at SAAS characterized by transformation, discovery, and SAAS pride. The SAAS community is vibrant, healthy, and strong thanks to your generosity and support.
Our Annual Report this year is a testament to all we have achieved as a community and acknowledges the many contributions from parents, grandparents, alumni, alumni families, faculty and staff, and friends of SAAS.
With your support, a remarkable $3.14 million was donated to SAAS in 2023-2024 via Impact:SAAS, the Annual Fund and SAAS in the City. An impressive 1,097 donors supported Impact:SAAS, the Annual Fund with gifts ranging from $1 to $35,000. At SAAS in the City, we achieved record-breaking attendance and record-breaking funds raised for financial aid.
We are grateful for the many hours volunteers within the SAAS community contributed this school year, playing a crucial role in helping us achieve our mission. The dedication of our parent community strengthens our Family Association, affinity initiatives, athletics, arts, and academic programs such as rhetoric and robotics now and into the future. Parents, grandparents, and alumni brought their leadership and expertise into classrooms across the Middle and Upper Schools, and helped launch our first SAAS Summits.
Thank you for having a lasting impact on our school and greater community.
We are proud to feature within this year’s Annual Report stories about how our faculty and students are exploring the use of AI, innovating in the classroom, and discovering and learning through an independent study project.
We look forward to continuing to broaden engagement with our community in the coming year. In 2023-2024, we expanded our Grandparent program by introducing a quarterly newsletter and Grandparent event on campus. We also introduced an Alumni Parent newsletter, hosted various regional Alumni events throughout the year, and celebrated our annual Alumni Reunion in June on campus.
Your contributions, advocacy and engagement are powerful, lasting, and impactful. We’re grateful for your support and we’re excited to write, with you, the next chapters in the SAAS story.
With Gratitude,
Rob Phillips Head of School
Matt Echohawk Hayashi Chair, Board of Trustees
THANK YOU TO OUR COMMUNITY LEADERS AND VOLUNTEERS
Our community is strengthened by our many dedicated volunteers who give their time and talent to help guide our strategic efforts, ensure we raise funds to support our exemplary education, and sustain our parent community through connection.

THE FUTURE IS NOW Embracing “Wise Use” of Generative AI
By Giselle Furlonge, Associate Head of School
Since its founding in 1983, SAAS has defined itself as a community of intentional iteration: an independent school as committed to delivering an education relevant to its students’ lived experience as it is to pushing the boundaries of teaching and learning.
In recent years, as secondary schools, colleges, and universities across the country were scrambling to implement policies to curb the use of ChatGPT in the classroom, SAAS got curious. Guided by a student-centered approach to teaching and a curriculum rooted in innovation and a Culture of Performance, our administrators and teachers prioritized the question, “How will this technology both enhance and complicate our students’ ability to think critically and creatively?” Instead of taking either a “lock-it-and-block-it” approach or embracing it uncritically, we collectively asked, “What does it mean to use Artificial Intelligence wisely?” To that end, with guidance and leadership from Alison Ray, Dean of Teaching and Learning, and Mark Betnel, our in-house AI Instructional Coach and Upper School Science and Innovations Teacher, we developed what we call our “wise use” guidelines.
The landscape of artificial intelligence presents a moving target, and we can expect new capabilities to be unlocked at a blistering pace. When it comes to using any new technology, SAAS strives to make decisions based on principles that are as widely applicable as possible, not resting solely on the features of any particular tool that exists at the current moment. Our teachers have always made decisions about adopting or forgoing new technologies informed by the learning goals of their curriculum, the guiding principle to Know the Kid, and the school’s mission to Question, Imagine, and Create in order to Contribute to a changing world.
Generative AI technology is the newest, but not the first or the last, technology that has the potential to unlock new capabilities for our students and also the potential to subvert learning goals. On the one hand, AI can be a powerful tool to support creativity, skill-building, and equitable education by helping create inclusive classroom environments. At the same time, it easily can work against those same goals when students don’t understand the true capabilities, limitations, and ethical issues of these technologies and tools.
“Some might say we are preparing kids for the future, but I disagree. It’s about equipping them for the present. AI tools can accelerate learning, improve efficiency, and enable equitable education, which is a core belief for us at SAAS.”
– Giselle Furlonge, Associate Head of School
The pre-teen and teenage brain is wired to adapt and respond to new situations, yet thrives in a setting of routine and stability. That’s one reason why offering clear guidance on the use of AI technology is so important. SAAS teachers have been asked to engage in explicit direction regarding the use of AI technology in their particular classes — recognizing that different teachers will come to different conclusions about the use of these tools, just as they have done in the past for calculators, laptops, smart boards, and other technologies. Meanwhile, we will collectively look for ways for AI technology to strengthen the school’s five essential teaching and learning priorities:
• Critical Thinking: We want students to make connections, to engage in the process instead of focusing only on the product, and to ask questions that guide their inquiry. When we focus on critical thinking, we can identify ways that generative AI can support student learning and establish clear expectations based on ways that AI could hinder learning.
• Meta-Cognition as an Explicit Goal: Students need to learn how to learn and how to develop the introspection to think about their learning. When we focus on teaching metacognition as an important practice, students become more engaged learners and can better decide for themselves if, when, where, and how to use generative AI tools to support them.
• Equitable Approach to Grading: An equitable approach to grading makes learning targets visible to students and encourages a growth mindset. When students know the reasons for learning and know they have multiple opportunities to demonstrate that learning, they feel motivated and can better understand the rationale — the if, when, where, and how — for incorporating generative AI tools in their learning.
• Risk-Taking and Mistake-Making: We want students to know they can and should make mistakes during practice as an essential part of learning. When students know that mistakes are expected and even encouraged, they feel more willing to take risks and will come to understand how and when generative AI tools might help or subvert their intentions.
• The Culture of Performance: Our schoolwide Culture of Performance asks students to demonstrate their learning for an audience, in contexts where tools such as AI might not be available or appropriate. Generative AI tools might support students, however, as they build skills and prepare for moments of authentic performance in which they are asked to combine disparate skills, think flexibly, and transfer their learning to a unique context.
Part of helping students grow as thinkers and learners with strong executive functioning skills is helping them determine the best time to use a particular tool or approach — and the same goes for teachers as they build and evolve their curricula. To support teachers in making informed choices around the use of AI tools
in the classroom, we have supported many professional development opportunities during the school year and over the past summer (see sidebar), and have invited families to learn alongside us via reading lists and virtual workshops.
Our mission and guiding principles help us remain confident in our ability to adapt to any new technology. As we explore the power and possibility of generative AI technologies — and actively work to avoid the pitfalls — we will continue to prioritize student-centered learning and assessments that invite students to challenge, question, and create as they navigate ambiguity and prepare for a future defined by change.
Annual Fund Impact:
Every year before the school year kicks off, SAAS staff and faculty gather for “Opening Days” — a time to not only take care of logistics but to share and learn from one another. This year, our dual themes were “Promoting Belonging and Agency” and “Student Learning and Agency in a World with AI.” Over the course of several days and numerous sessions across campus, faculty members shared their expertise on a range of topics from navigating the impact of AI in classrooms to fostering meaningful discussions around subjects like ethics and personal identity.
Thanks to the Annual Fund, SAAS is able to offer myriad professional development opportunities to its teachers over the summer and throughout the school year, including providing stipends to those who prepared and led sessions during Opening Days on campus.
The growth that happens in our classrooms is rooted in the learning and collaboration among our faculty. When our teachers channel their passion into teaching one another, honing their skills, and taking on new challenges, we elevate our collective ability to support and engage students.
SAAS is a place where everyone belongs, where you can be yourself. It’s just everything to me. I love the SAAS community!
– SAAS 10th grader
IMPACT:SAAS, the Annual Fund
Seattle Academy’s annual community-wide fundraising effort supports every aspect of a SAAS education. Gifts to the Annual Fund help fund learning resources, faculty professional development, student technology, curriculum enhancements and materials, affinity groups and clubs, and so much more.
Every dollar raised is spent during the course of the school year, and enables SAAS to say YES to any unexpected learning opportunities that may arise. These funds have a direct and immediate impact on all SAAS students, and elevate the SAAS experience to something truly transformational.

EXPLORING VALUE
INSIGHTS FROM THE $2 CHALLENGE IN ENTREPRENEURIAL LEADERSHIP
Innovations classes comprise a significant component of our Upper School required curriculum. This curriculum includes classes such as Entrepreneurship and Design, Computational Thinking, and Financial Literacy. These courses cultivate real-world problem-solving abilities and equip students with the skills needed to thrive and contribute in a rapidly evolving world. Seattle Academy was one of the first schools in the Seattle area to introduce Innovations courses, starting with a single course back in 2018. Recognizing the importance of equipping our students with skills aligned with the “prepared for life” aspect of the SAAS Mission, we incorporated innovative thinking into our curriculum.
In the Entrepreneurial Leadership class at SAAS, Upper School Innovations Teacher
Sydney Parno challenges her students to define value through the $2 Challenge. This project tasks students with growing the value of $2 in creative and legal ways, culminating in presentations that showcase their efforts and evolving definitions of value.
“At the start of the project, I give them $2 in cash as a symbolic representation. The idea is to grow its value and then compare their definitions of value at the end,” explains Sydney.
Sydney took over the class from Mariah Gentry, a former faculty member and SAAS alum, who initiated the $2 Challenge. The project allows students to develop global citizenship awareness through research in business, leadership skills, emotional intelligence, and bias awareness.
One memorable story involves a student who supposedly traded their way up to a boat. More typical projects include trading items or starting small businesses. Sophomores Gabriela Bunin and Marina Seigel found the project particularly enlightening. Marina discovered value through trade and negotiation, while Gabby applied her earnings towards a meaningful experience with friends.
“I learned to think ahead before making trades and understood that value isn’t just about money but experiences and personal growth,” says Marina.
Sydney aims for students to learn about themselves, take safe risks, and grow. “A lot of this class is about helping students become really good people,” she emphasizes.
The $2 Challenge not only teaches entrepreneurial skills but also pushes students out of their comfort zones, encouraging them to engage with others and apply their strengths to overcome challenges.
Innovations courses are critical for students, says Innovations Department Chair Tyler Hartnov. “Innovations classes equip students to meet challenges with empathy, creativity, and critical thinking — essential tools in preparing kids for life!”
“Entrepreneurial Leadership was a great class for me,” reflects Marina. “It helped me look at my strengths and use those experiences to tackle weaknesses.”

STUDENT ENGINEERING: AN NNOVATIVE
RC SEARCH AND RESCUE PROJECT
Silas Lockwood ’24 injured his knee skiing and while recovering in a cast, he decided he wanted to build an RC (radio-controlled) fixed-wing airplane for backcountry search and rescue. Silas dove into the world of Independent Study with Robotics Director Gerald Elliott, and last fall, he began the construction of the plane. Silas fabricated using his home shop while also attending robotics practices after school for machining and materials. He created a custom foam cutting tool, soldered all of his components, and by the end of the trimester, he had a prototype that he tested and worked on throughout the winter trimester. In an attempt to set his prototype apart, Silas sat down with search and rescue professionals to research what those folks in the field need and how his airplane could best serve them. Silas flew his glider in the Cascade Mountains recently and then presented what he had learned about aeronautical engineering to his family, teachers, and friends.
The Independent Study program allows students to delve into their interests beyond the traditional classroom setting. Students must research and pitch their ideas to their teachers, ensuring it aligns
with their academic schedules. Once approved, they spend a trimester dedicated to exploring their chosen topic. At the end of the trimester, students present their findings to their peers and younger students, showcasing their learning and discoveries.
In 2023-24, students successfully completed independent studies in robotics, chemistry, biology, and conservation.
SAAS IN THE CITY
With 900 guests, including current, new, and incoming parents, alumni, grandparents, trustees, honorary trustees, SAAS faculty and staff, friends of SAAS, and over 140 student performers, SAAS in the City 2024 was a wonderful night to come together and a testament to the power of our community. We had record-breaking attendance and collectively raised a record-breaking $1.4 million for SAAS’s Financial Aid program, in a brand new venue, the Summit Building at the Seattle Convention Center.

I can’t stress that enough — you are changing the trajectory of someone’s life and enriching the diversity of our school. HOME OF THE UPPER SCHOOL
“A new Upper School and a cohesive campus will be transformative for SAAS because of the connections and community that it will build, the relevant programmatic opportunities that it will unlock for students and faculty, and the innovative and future-focused thinking that it will encourage.”
— Rob Phillips, Head of School
