2022-2023 SAAS Annual Report

THE IMPORTANCE OF GRATITUDE Dear Friends, The 2022-2023 school year has come and gone, and what an extraordinary year it was for our students, families, and community. We take this opportunity to reflect and celebrate the success of our school community and say a heartfelt thank you for the many ways you have stepped up to support Seattle Academy and our mission. It is with deep appreciation that we present to you this year’s Annual Report outlining the generous support and volunteerism we have received this year. The pages that follow recognize the various contributions that SAAS has received from parents, faculty and staff, grandparents, alumni, alumni families, and friends. Our community generously donated more than $2.9 million in 20222023. Thank you to the 920 donors who supported Impact:SAAS, the Annual Fund this year, raising a generous $1.56 million. Thank you to those who raised more than $1.1 million for financial aid through our SAAS in the City community event and to everyone who contributed to our ongoing South Park Initiative, SAAS Rising, and our Endowment. We are grateful to the many volunteers who committed their time, energy, and expertise to support SAAS. Parents committed their time and energy in every facet of the school community: to the Family Association; to our diversity and inclusion initiatives; and in academic presentations, athletics, rhetoric and the arts. Those contributions have an enduring impact. You will find two new additions to this year’s Annual Report. With gratitude for their participation, we recognize faculty and staff, grandparents and alumni parents within the Annual Fund donors lists. The second addition is several short articles that showcase programmatic highlights for our Innovations, Arts and Athletics programs. We are thrilled for what the future holds for SAAS and are looking forward to the 2023-24 school year. Thanks to this extraordinary community that believes in our mission and vision. Your contributions are many and varied, meaningful and lasting, and they are all deeply appreciated. With Gratitude, Rob Phillips Head of School

PRACTICAL & VALUABLE LESSONS FROM OUR INNOVATIONS DEPARTMENT One key part of our curriculum is Innovations. Our Innovations curriculum features classes like Entrepreneurship and Design, Computational Thinking and Financial Literacy, which develop realworld problem-solving skills and help build competencies to operate, succeed and contribute to a rapidly changing world. Seattle Academy was among one of the first schools in the Seattle area to offer Innovations courses starting as a single course back in 2018. We knew it was important for our students to develop skills that directly address the “prepared for life” portion of the SAAS Mission and that could be attained through the implementation of innovative thinking. The 2022-2023 school year had many important lessons but we wanted to highlight some of the lessons we believe are share-worthy!

The Game of Life, a realistic exploration of life after SAAS Sydney Parno’s Upper School class played a game called “Game of Life” where they were dealt a card with a real-life scenario—think, you are a vet tech who makes $50,000 a year with a house payment of X and student loan and credit card debt. The students then had to make a coordinating board game with these criteria in mind. The idea is for students to understand the objective reality of their career decisions. Sydney designed the game to take a creative approach to planning what the next ten years will look like after graduating from SAAS. “It’s one of my favorite projects of all time,” says Sydney, who has been teaching this class, and this project, for the past two years. “Students learn many life skills such as budgeting, writing college essays, and planning ahead to reach a dream career. As soon as students graduate from SAAS and move away, how will they support themselves?” Sydney poses this and other questions as students explore the financial implications of going to college, taking a gap year, enrolling in the military, trade school, and countless other tracks available to them. To read more about the “Game of Life” in Sydney Parno’s class, scan the QR code below with your smartphone.

IMPACT:SAAS, the Annual Fund
Seattle Academy’s Annual Fund is our most critical fundraising effort supporting our school’s daily expenses, and helping fund everything from academic programming, student technology, curriculum materials, teacher salaries, and so much more. Dollars raised through the Annual Fund are spent during the course of the school year and have an immediate impact on all of our students. We are grateful for our community’s steadfast commitment to SAAS students and a SAAS education.

“We support the Annual Fund because SAAS has been instrumental for my kids to learn to push themselves beyond the norm to expand their interests and enrich their experiences, a trait I believe will be beneficial for them in life.” — 7th and 9th grade parent

IN CONVERSATION WITH CATHY SCHICK, SEATTLE ACADEMY’S ATHLETIC DIRECTOR In her 22nd year at Seattle Academy, we sat down with Athletic Director Cathy Schick to recap highlights from the 2022-2023 school year–and also, what changes are coming in 2023-2024. SAAS: Hello Cathy! Tell us a little bit about you, how long you have been at SAAS, and what keeps you here. Cathy: Sports have always been a part of my life and my entire career. I’ve never had a job that hasn’t been sports-related. I’ve been a college coach and worked for a sports company as a marketing director but every job I’ve ever had, either volunteered or paid, has always been related to sports. I’ve been at SAAS now for 22 years. I started when the Upper School gym was built in 2002. When I first came to SAAS, my role was to run the gym and set
26
up the bleachers, but over time I was really able to grow my role. I love SAAS, and part of that is because of how I was able to kind of carve my own path. But my drive is that sports have so many things to offer kids on so many levels. That’s why I love doing what I do. SAAS: What were some major highlights from the 2022-2023 school year? Cathy: We won the 2022-2023 WIAA Scholastic Cup for the first time in SAAS history! The Scholastic Cup is not only a massive athletic achievement, but it takes into consideration the scholastic part: student’s individual grades, the overall GPA of the different teams, and also sportsmanship. Unless you qualify with all of those three things, you cannot be entered to win. SAAS excels in both athletics and academics and for the scholastic cup, points are given for both achievements. For example, the Boys Soccer team took the state championship and scored 100 points within the WIAA. The Boys Wrestling team won the academic award and scored 100 points, so both are equal in value. Receiving this award is really a testament to our guiding principles and mission–our goal is that all students truly try and excel in any capacity they are participating in. To see our student-athletes excelling, and giving their all in many facets is validating for us and was rewarded in a big, big way. SAAS: What are some of your proudest moments, and trends you are witnessing as the athletics department continues to grow and evolve?
Cathy: Some of my proudest moments are watching alumni coming back to help in athletics. We recently held volleyball turnouts over the summer and there were 140 kids and six alumni who just wanted to help out. Students who just graduated, say, three years ago are here to help. It’s just so great to see. Beyond seeing our alumni return as coaches, I love watching students try something new and discover a talent and a passion for a new sport. It’s fun to watch the transformation from day one as they continue to grow on their athletic journey and see the pride they develop as a Seattle Academy athlete. SAAS: What’s next? What can we expect to see in the 2023-2024 school year? Cathy: Next year we are starting the Cardinal Club program which will continue to provide an experience for students in any sport–it may be that they’re not in a competitive track or on a competitive team, but they are still experiencing what sports can offer. Even though we’ve grown as a student body over time, with this program, we can still share the athletic experience for all kids wanting to participate and dabble in many different sports. We are also starting a competitive dance program! It’s a collaboration between us and the dance programs that will live within athletics because they’ll compete at a competitive level. They’ll have an opportunity to compete for a state title, just like a basketball team or any other team at that level, and we are super excited about this new program.

Theater Students Unleash Their Inner Playwright Editors Note: This is an abbreviated article written by Cory Gennari Pratt (Grade 12). You can read the entire story by scanning the QR Code below. Every year, the spring play is a big to-do. A palpable excitement breaks within the Advanced Acting class before Seattle Academy’s Performing Arts teacher, Mike Cimino, announces which play they will perform. But this year–things were a little bit different…literally. The story begins a few summers ago when Mike Cimino began adapting a 1913 novel into a script. The novel, “A World of Women” by J.D. Beresford, tells the story of a deadly plague that hits humankind, wiping out the male population and leaving women to rebuild society as they know it. The story takes place in London and explores the idea of a women-only society and what that would look like. However, as the 2022-2023 school year picked back up and Mike dove into teaching, the play was set aside. Until the Advanced Acting class heard about this script… They wanted to read it and Mike let them, but what surprised Mike was that the
30
student actors wanted this play to be the spring production. They wanted to act out Mike’s play! There was only one problem– the script wasn’t finished yet. Mike decided to go for it. He could finish his play while also using it as a teaching opportunity, an experience the actors may not necessarily get to have, maybe ever, in their acting careers. Working with a playwright themselves on an original piece is not something you hear about every day. For months, in collaboration with the actors, Mike and the students worked on finishing the script, developing the characters, their arcs, their strengths and weaknesses, and put on a fully original and absolutely dynamic show titled “Everything’s Different.” Although the story’s premise stayed the same, the class worked to modernize a somewhat dated narrative to reflect how a women-only society would look today. It was an incredible experience for all of the students. They raved about how much they learned, the ownership they felt over the characters, and also how overall it was a really fun and creative experience. Cory Gennari Pratt (Grade 12) wrote an essay about the experience, detailing their castmate’s involvement and what made the process so special. You can find that essay by scanning the QR code below with your smartphone.

This year, on Saturday, March 25, over 550 guests including current and new parents, alumni, trustees, honorary trustees, SAAS faculty, staff and over 150 student performers, gathered at Fremont Studios for a beautiful night of celebration and collective impact. SAAS in the City was an evening of soulful vocals, dynamic performances and inspiring alumni speakers that contributed to raising, for the third year in a row, $1 million for SAAS’ financial aid program.

ALUMNI DANIEL GOLDSTEIN Class of 2011
This excerpt is taken from Daniel’s speech at SAAS in the City 2023 I graduated from SAAS in 2011. I think the most stand-out aspect of my time there was the constant and endless opportunities. At the time it felt so normal that I don’t think I really appreciated it but I remember being involved in an absolutely ridiculous number of musical tours and performances, theatrical productions, sports and other extracurricular activities. It has become so clear after leaving Seattle and the SAAS community how much of a gift that opportunity is. It helped me find
many of my passions and created spaces for students to exist in tight-knit groups within the SAAS bubble. It helped expand my mind beyond the idea of pursuing a conventional career because I had found so many things I loved to do. One of my favorite memories from my time at SAAS was going on the Alaska trip. Every time I tell stories from that trip, people are amazed at the experiences we got to have as a class. I remember a moment where I was on a fishing boat with a few of my best friends and teachers catching rockfish at sunset and a pod of whales surfaced just a few feet away. There have been few moments in life that I remember that vividly.
