The Northwest EcoBuilding Guild

Letter from the Seattle Chapter President Spring is in the air! For many of us, this marks the time when we prepare for all those home improvement projects. In the Northwest EcoBuilding Guild community, we have started a springtime tradition of opening our homes and sharing what we have learned with the public — this has become our Annual Green Home Tour. This year, our Tour is on Earth Day. What started forty-two years ago as a response to a massive oil spill in California, Earth Day has grown into a day for people all over the world to voice their appreciation for the planet and stand united for a sustainable future. In the Guild community, Earth Day is celebrated every day. Our members work throughout the year to help educate, inspire, and provide sustainable solutions. The Guild community has shown that individuals can come together to create solutions–and have fun while doing so. Together, we really can make a difference! Here are some of the highlights of Seattle Chapter programs and events from this year.

empowers people through education to transform the built environment for long-term sustainability. Founded by green building pioneers in 1993, the Guild has become a community of construction-related professionals, homeowners, and partners concerned with ecological building in the Pacific Northwest. The Northwest EcoBuilding Guild’s Mission is to support through education the progressive work of our members in the Pacific Northwest in order to improve the relationship between our communities and our built environment.

The 2011 Seattle Green Home Tour was a huge success, with over 1,250 visitors visiting the homes. We are thrilled this year to include a Saturday Expo and Sunday Workshops to compliment the Tour. The Mother Earth News Sustainability Fair at the Puyallup Fairgrounds June 2-3, offers a fun, family-oriented, hands-on opportunity to learn. Our Chapter’s 10x10x10 Green Building Slam continues to inspire, celebrating its 10th Anniversary. This year the event will be held at the University of Washington. This fast-paced fun-filled evening features behindthe-scenes accounts of 10 projects, each given 10 minutes and 10 slides to share their story. Mark your calendars for Saturday, September 15! The Technical Flashcards (TFCs) project is getting ready to launch, providing an unprecedented on-the-job training tool on green building techniques in the form of easy-to-use text, detailed drawings, and photos. The 20/20 Home Refit Challenge challenges the Puget Sound community to reduce energy use by 20% in 20,000 homes by 2020 in partnership with Built Green®, Home Performance WA, and Puget Sound Cooperative Credit Union.

We provide open-source educational tools to the construction industry and the general public in order to encourage building practices that dramatically reduce carbon emissions, are self-sustaining, contribute to local economies, and create optimal conditions for human health and community. We consider the needs of the seventh generation in all that we do and encourage inclusive discourse to that end. We invite you to join us in becoming part of this community.

In the broadest sense, green building means applying new thinking to the way we build, remodel, renovate and develop our residences and communities. It requires an understanding of the relationships between building site, building design, mechanical systems and other factors. Finally, it mandates a mindset that enables healthy, mutually beneficial relationships

What is green building? between human, technical and natural systems.

Green building goes beyond reducing energy use or improving indoor air quality (though that’s a good place to start). It’s about addressing the whole system—not just the pieces. Conventional building methodology views each project in terms of its

component parts – the insulation, the wiring, the plumbing, the landscaping, the climate, building orientation, interior finishes, etc. – but green building looks at the interactions between everything. It’s a whole-house approach that benefits builders, buyers and the environment. Source: Green Building Blocks

Did You Know?

Fact: We spend an average of 90% of our time in buildings—and the air quality inside is two to five times worse than outside air.

Fact: Buildings in the United States are responsible for 39% of our total energy consumption — 60% of our electricity alone. As a point of reference, transportation - including cars, buses, trains, etc. - comprise only 27%. Fact: Worldwide, buildings consume nearly 40% of the world’s energy, 25% of its wood, and 15% of its water. Source: Pittsburgh Green Building Alliance

According to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Building America Program, an integrated, systemsengineering approach can reduce as much as 50% of the energy consumption of a new home - with little or no impact on the cost of construction.
