Welcome to the 4th Annual Northwest Green Home Tour
Built Green and the Northwest EcoBuilding Guild are proud to partner once again to bring you the 2014 Northwest Green Home Tour. With more than 20,000 green homes in the Puget Sound area alone, green building is going mainstream. But there is still much progress to be made. The fourth annual Northwest Green Home Tour is your opportunity to see firsthand the many ways that environmentally-conscious design and construction can benefit not only the planet as a whole, but your local community, your family, and you! Green homes can put more money in your pocket by lowering your energy costs or even eliminating them altogether, as some projects on the tour demonstrate. Durable green building materials require less maintenance, giving you more time to relax. Green homes are healthy homes, with fresher air and fewer toxins. And homeowners report that their green homes are more comfortable to live in, without the cold drafts of standard construction. We hope that you’ll be as inspired as we are by all the innovative ideas, artistry, and craftsmanship you’ll see on the tour. Already, 30% of new homes sold in King County are green. Join us in envisioning a Puget Sound region in which all building is green building. Enjoy the tour!
This FREE tour wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of many local businesses and organizations. While taking the tour, be sure to visit our 12 Sustainability Stops, offering discounts, demos, healthy refreshments and more! Our Sustainability Stops offer great examples of green building in a commercial setting.

In 2012, my wife and I downsized and started down our path to creating a sustainable, energy-eficient home. After completing weatherization repairs and an extensive energy retroit, we installed 55 solar panels (13.2 kW) that produce more than enough electricity to power our home and our Tesla Model S electric vehicle.

106-Year-Old Net-Zero Craftsman by Puget Sound Solar
725 N 63rd St | Seattle 98103
Ravenna Dormer/ Geothermal by Schulte Construction
This new three-story home has a rooftop terrace that overlooks Greenlake and an ancient maple tree. We are targeting 5-Star Built Green and possibly net-zero-energy. The house is designed to maximize solar exposure and has R-29 walls, triple-glazed windows, and radiant infloor heat.
The converted attic of this Ravenna home originally had two bedrooms and no bathroom. The owners wanted to add a bathroom and create a more inviting space with the least environmental impact. We paid close attention to the efficient use of materials and installed a geothermal heat system for long-term energy savings.
We will tour you through our home and explain the extensive remodel, including energy upgrades and insulation. We are also happy to share how we restored the original Arts and Crafts beauty, using almost all reclaimed and secondhand materials. Our rain water recovery system is of interest to many.

What is green building? Green building means applying new thinking to the way we build, remodel, renovate and develop our residences and communities. It requires an understanding of the relationships between building site, building design, mechanical systems, and other factors. Finally, it helps promote healthy, mutually beneficial relationships between human, technical, and natural systems. Green building goes beyond reducing energy use or improving indoor air quality (though those are good places to start). It’s about addressing the whole system, not just the pieces. It’s a whole-house approach that benefits builders, buyers, and the environment. Source: Green Building Blocks

This is a fantastic example of how a typical Seattle home can be updated to become a sustainability standout that can be enjoyed for generations to come. The home performance project produced a 75% projected energy savings. This was done by reducing energy consumption and installing a 3.6 kW solar array.
With HOME reclaimed, our goals centered around the ability to see the beauty, resources, and intrinsic value that existed in a 1938 Tudor and transform this character seamlessly into a 2014 modern dwelling.
This light-filled, energy-efficient 1952 home and garden was once a neglected, cramped energy hog. We transformed it with thoughtful design, an advanced envelope, and the creative use of salvaged and nontoxic materials. Solar ready. 5-Star Built Green.
