letterfrompublisher Welcome to the May issue of Seattle Natural Awakenings! In this issue we explore women’s health, a varied and important topic. As a general rule, most Natural Awakenings readers are some of the healthiest people I have ever met. There’s also a smaller but significant number of us who struggle with chronic health issues (mine are of the autoimmune variety), and you’re part of this family too! Regardless of where you are in your health— humming along, proactively seeking a tune-up, or searching for answers—natural wellness is for you, too. In these pages you’ll find a variety of perspectives to help inspire and educate, no matter where you find yourself today. “Contraception Pill Chill” (page 16) brings up some serious drawbacks of hormonal birth control and offers alternatives. Our article about epigenetics, “Switching On Health,” (page 22) offers ideas for lifestyle choices that will help maximize your genetic potential for good health. “Choosing Confidence” (page 26) gives practical and actionable advice for “throwing out your head trash” and living with more courage and joy. There’s lots more in these pages - enjoy! To your health and happiness,

Yellow Umbrella Shannon Kincaid When Shannon Kincaid was 2, her mother noticed that she liked to draw on whatever was handy—Zwieback toast, rocks, concrete or even charcoal briquettes. She was presented with a box of Crayolas, which she called, “craylolas,” and has been creating art ever since. Kincaid, who is also an accomplished singer and recording artist, has painted commissioned portraits of luminaries throughout the country that include Tom Landry, Mickey Mantle, Mary Kay Ash, Byron Nelson and June Lockhart. She frequently works with interior designers and businesses to create custom mosaics, murals and finishes for residential and commercial spaces. Kincaid’s oils, pastels and watercolors, whether representational or impressionistic, are imbued with a sense of serenity and joy, reflecting her belief in the healing power of art. One of her favorite quotes is by the author Henry James [1843-1916]: “It is art that makes life, makes interest, makes importance. And I know of no substitute whatever for the force and beauty of its process.” View the artist’s portfolio at ShannonKincaid.com.

or many women, menstruation feels like a curse. A New Cycle: Your Guide to a Better Period, Naturally presents natural techniques to alleviate common symptoms of PMS and enhance feminine vitality all month long, according to Tracy Puhl. “New Cycle was created as part of our mission to educate and empower women to make healthier, more sustainable choices for their periods,” Puhl explains. Their products are available at natural grocery stores and pharmacies nationwide, as well as online. For more information and to download a complimentary preview of A New Cycle: ANewCycleBook.com.
Wellspring School Announces Amma Therapy Enrollment & Spring Classes
E
nrollment is now open for a new program at The Wellspring School, located in Portland, Ore. Classes for the Amma Bodywork Therapy program begin this September at Wellspring’s Portland campus. A Chinese word for massage, ‘Amma’ is a lineage based Asian healing art that predates acupuncture, according to Wellspring director Rachel Myles. “Amma Therapy, like acupuncture, focuses on the balance and movement of Qi (energy) within the body,” Myles explains. “Whereas the acupuncturist inserts needles into the energy pathways to stimulate and move the energy, the Amma practitioner relies primarily on the sensitivity and strength of the hands to manipulate the client’s life Qi.” The 1,000 hour program is taught over six 15-week segments and takes about 24 months to complete. Students learn nutrition, meditation, Qigong and bodywork in order to prepare to provide holistic and comprehensive health care. The Wellspring School is the only institution in the United States that has preserved and is teaching Amma in its complete form, according to Myles. The school also offers ongoing community classes in Qigong, Tai Chi, nutrition and holistic health, many of which are currently open for enrollment as well. “Spring is a time associated with cleaning up what’s accumulated over the colder winter months on all levels: physical, environmental, mental, and spiritual,” Myles says. “Taking a holistic approach to spring cleaning starts with nutrition, but the longer daylight hours also inspire increased physical activities. While mindful movement practices such as yoga, tai chi, or Qigong are great to pursue year-round, they can be especially helpful in awakening our minds and bodies to the spring season.”

New Health Clinic Donates Memberships
A
new local membership-based health clinic called Flat Rock Health Seattle is donating a free membership to one member of the community for every ten individuals who sign up. Dr. Ani Das, owner and practitioner at Flat Rock Health Seattle, said the winner will receive a complimentary silver membership to the practice for one year, a $49 value per month. “Our patients now play a role in helping someone in need,” Dr. Das explains, noting that members are asked to nominate an individual to the clinic’s 10 Gives Health Program when they sign up for their own membership. Community members who are in need of healthcare services but who cannot afford a membership can also enter the lottery drawing by visiting the clinic and completing an entry form. Flat Rock Health Seattle offers members unlimited access to Dr. Ani Das, an osteopathic family physician who practices integrative medicine. Members are provided free lab work for commonly ordered tests and discounted rates for x-rays and prescription medications for a monthly fee starting at $49. Members also get discounted rates to physical therapy, massage, and nutritional counseling at the clinic. Some services and procedures do have additional fees but the clinic is committed to providing upfront and affordable pricing, offering patients a menu of services that can viewed online or at the clinic. Dr. Das says this is an effort to be completely transparent and remove the guesswork from healthcare. “For a clear mind, we need to have a healthy body,” Dr. Das says. “With so many stresses and financial hurdles getting in the way of keeping us healthy and happy, our ambition is for Flat Rock Health Seattle to be that partner that empowers people.” Dr. Das performs a wide range of services in office ranging from annual wellness visits to stitching lacerations and minor surgery, as well as osteopathic manipulation. While memberships are not designed to replace insurance, they are intended to make high quality care more accessible and affordable. “Our goal is to be a resource for health, lifestyle and education, and to facilitate health in each individual,” Dr. Das says. “We’re not measuring success by the absence of disease, but instead by the presence of wellness.” Dr. Das is a clinical faculty member of the University of Washington and has a background in family and sports medicine. Training of osteopathic physicians is nearly identical to medical doctors and takes place at the same institutions, but includes a greater emphasis on preventative and holistic care and muscularskeletal manipulation. Flat Rock Health Seattle is located at 10564 5th Ave. NE, Suite 402, Seattle. For more information: 206-258-6652 or FlatRockHealth.com.

Bastyr Center for Natural Health Introduces Monthly End of Life Discussions
B
astyr Center for Natural Health has launched a monthly event called Death Cafe. Free and open to the public, the gathering is facilitated by naturopathic physician Dr. Brad Lichtenstein to help people discuss a taboo subject in a light hearted manner. “Every one of us has a terminal illness called life,” says Dr. Lichtenstein. “We have a culture of denial. That’s why researchers say we’re the most overweight, indebted and medicated society on the planet,” adds Dr. Lichtenstein. “This is a serious conversation, but it’s not to be taken seriously,” Dr. Lichtenstein says. “Some of the people I’ve met who have the best spirit are those who are confronting death and can laugh.” To add to the light-hearted approach of the often heavy-hearted subject, Bastyr Center plans to stick with the international Death Cafe theme that states: “At Death Cafes people drink tea, eat cake and discuss death.” Cake will be provided by nutrition students from Bastyr University, along with Choice Organic Wellness Teas, which were formulated by a master herbalist at the University. Death Cafes take place at Bastyr Center for Natural Health at 3670 Stone Way North, Seattle. They are free and open to the public, and take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays on the following dates: May 28, June 25, September 17 and October 22.
16th Camano Island Art Studio Tour to Take Place in May The 16th Annual Camano Island Studio Tour will take place over two weekends in May and will feature the art of 41 juried artists, three galleries, and this year for the first time, the tour will highlight a distinguished artist: Alfred Currier, of Anacortes. “The tour features some of the finest and most diverse artists and galleries in the Pacific Northwest,” says Karla Matzke, the artist who founded the tour and an art gallery owner. “As artists, there’s nothing we love more than to share our love of art with others. It means so much when we see visitors make a connection with our art and the community and the surroundings that inspire it,” she continues. Studio tour signs will be present to guide visitors along the tour route, and map and artist information is available at CamanoStudioTour.com. Matzke says the studio tour, which is free, is the largest single event on Camano Island and encourages visitors to enjoy the scenic Camano Island beaches and parks between stops at artists’ studios and galleries. In addition to their annual studio tour, the Camano Arts Association offers college scholarships to local high school students, a mentor program and public arts programs. The Camano Island Studio Tour takes place May 9-11 and May 17-18 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. all days. Free. For more information: CamanoStudioTour.com.

New Research Finds Breast Imaging Market Will Grow As Cancer Rates Rise Globally

he global breast imaging market, which includes mammography and thermography, among other techniques, is expected to grow at least 12 percent in the next five years, according to a new study released by Transparency Market Research. Demand is partly attributed to the rise in cancers worldwide, which the World Health Organization expects to grow over 70 percent in the next two decades. “It’s important to know and monitor the health of your breast,” says Ursula Walker, co-owner of BRAS Thermography, a thermography imaging service located in Issaquah. “Most women think that there is no need to monitor or address breast health until they reach age 40, which is not true, and many are also unaware that there are a lot of preventative things that can be done at an early age.” Walker says thermography, which is FDA approved as an adjunct diagnostic tool, can be used at any age to monitor breast health and carries no risk of harm to the body. “Thermography can detect physiologic changes associated with a cancer while it is still at a cellular level—before it becomes visible on a mammogram,” Walker notes. “With themography, if a problem is detected early, you can address early issues with lifestyle changes and possibly change its course.” Ingrid Adams, co-owner of BRAS Thermography, says research points to the following recommendations for breast health: support liver and gut health, have your vitamin D levels checked by your doctor, and get a thermogram. There are many more prevention ideas that can be incorporated, but this is a good place to start. “I highly recommend thermography because knowledge is power,” Adams says, noting that more than 80 percent of women who develop breast cancer have no family history of the disease. “If indeed you find that you are at risk through thermography, it is a great motivator to incorporate lifestyle changes and improve your breast health.” BRAS Thermography is located at 317 NW Gilman Blvd., Issaquah. healthbriefs Roundup Toxin Accumulates in GM Soybeans
A
study published in the journal Food Chemistry tested soybeans grown from seeds that were genetically modified (GM) to be resistant to the herbicide Roundup. It compared these with organic soybeans and soybeans from non-GM seeds. The chemical and nutritional analysis of soybean samples from 31 different Iowa farms found the GM soy contained significantly higher levels of the toxin glyphosate, the central chemical in Roundup, than both the organic and the conventional non-GMO soybeans. The organic soybeans contained no glyphosate, plus significantly higher levels of protein and zinc, as well as lower levels of saturated fats.
Multivitamins with Selenium Counter HIV
A
study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that a daily multivitamin supplement with selenium significantly slows the advance of HIV among those with the virus. The researchers tested 878 asymptomatic, HIV-infected people over two years that had never taken antiretroviral medications. The test subjects were split into four groups, with members of each receiving separate medications—multivitamins, multivitamins plus selenium, selenium alone or a placebo— for five years. The multivitamins contained vitamins B, C and E. Those given multivitamins plus selenium experienced a 54 percent reduction in low counts of a critical immunity cell factor (called CD4) compared to the placebo group. This group also experienced a 44 percent reduction in other events known to accompany the progression of HIV, including AIDSrelated deaths. The researchers concluded: “In antiviral, therapy-naive, HIV-infected adults, 24-month supplementation with a single supplement containing multivitamins and selenium was safe and significantly reduced the risk of immune decline and morbidity.”

Drinking Cow’s Milk While Nursing Linked to Infant Eczema
N
ew research has found that if a mother drinks cow’s milk during the period that she is breastfeeding, it raises her infant’s risk of experiencing skin allergies. The study, published in the Journal of the Medical Association of Thailand, followed 62 mothers and their infants from birth through 4 months of age. Researchers from Bangkok’s Mahidol University assembled the mothers and infants into two groups. Mothers in one group drank cow’s milk during the first four months of breastfeeding; the control group did not. Eight of the children with mothers drinking cow’s milk had skin allergies, versus two of the children in the control group. All of the mothers exclusively breastfed their infants throughout this period. An earlier study published in the British Medical Journal followed 124 mothers, 97 of which breastfed their babies. Of those that breastfed, 48 drank no milk or other dairy products and 49 drank milk. Infants in the milkdrinking group experienced 21 cases of eczema, while the no-milk group had only 11 cases. Overall, between the breastfed and non-breastfed infants, the breastfed infants had lower incidences of eczema regardless of the mother’s diet.
Healthy Homemade Infant Food Reduces Kids’ Allergies
A
study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology reports that infants that were fed more homemade foods comprising a higher percentage of fruits and vegetables were less likely to develop food allergies. In assessing youngsters of the same age, researchers from the University of Southampton Medical College, in the UK, followed 41 children that had developed food allergies by the age of 2, alongside 82 nonallergic infants. After tracking the toddlers’ diets with food diaries and conducting allergy testing, the researchers found that infants fed more of the healthier homemade diet had a significantly lower incidence of food allergies as toddlers.

global briefs Solar Surge
Global Rise in Sun-Generated Power Last year, the U.S. joined Germany, Italy, China and Japan in producing more than 10 gigawatts of solar production nationwide. Now, other countries have awakened to the opportunity and are on their way to catching up. The popular Scandinavian retailer IKEA has sold $10,000 solar panels in 17 British outlets. Peru recently started a National Photovoltaic Household Electrification Program to connect 2 million of its poorest residents with solar power. In the first phase, 1,601 solar panels were installed to power 126 impoverished communities. The plan is to install about 12,500 photovoltaic systems for 500,000 households at an overall cost of $200 million. Earth Hour India is helping citizens to switch to solar energy in villages that previously had no electricity. Woodlands stores, in partnership with World Wildlife FoundationIndia, has launched a collection drive across the country, inspiring individuals to donate to help light up more than 100 households in three villages in Madhya Pradesh with solar power. The residents had traditionally depended on forest resources for their energy needs.

U.S. Forest Service researchers have discovered that the urban forests in 10 cities across the country save on average one person a year from pollution-related death. In New York City alone, that number increases to eight people per year. The scientists recommend that people everywhere plant more trees. Source: AmericanForests.org

Bikes-to-Go
Cycling Gains Ground at Colleges and in Cities
May is National Bike Month, and more universities continue to commit to bicycling as a sustainable, healthy and environmentally conscious transportation choice. Recently, Harvard University joined Princeton and Yale as an official Bicycle-Friendly University (BFU), and the League of American Bicyclists designated 14 new BFU members, expanding the program to 58 colleges in 30 states across the U.S. with more to come. When New York City opened registration for a public bike-sharing program, Citi Bike, more than 5,000 people signed up within 30 hours. Similar demand for more cycling options is happening across the nation where shared bicycle programs are taking root (see Tinyurl.com/Top50BikeFriendliestCities). The popular Washington, D.C., Capital Bikeshare program began operating in September 2010, and is now the nation’s largest, with 200 locking docks able to accommodate more than 1,800 bright-red bicycles. As in many programs, people can sign up for a short-term stint or an annual membership using either a credit card online or at a station kiosk. Then they can unlock a bicycle and return it to any station within the system. All rides under 30 minutes are free, after which escalating fees kick in, encouraging people to make short trips and to keep more bikes available for other riders. ew parents are faced with many choices about how to care for their infant, and one of the choices that can make the largest environmental impact is diapering. “I see many families who are strongly committed to green living and want to make the healthiest choices for their baby and the planet, and these folks often decide to go with cloth diapers,” says Mark Stief, owner of Seattle-based Baby Diaper Service. “What these parents find out is that disposables generate sixty times more solid waste than cloth diapers and end up using twenty times more raw materials, such as oil and wood pulp,” Stief explains, citing a book by Liz Armstrong and Adrienne Scott called Whitewash: Exposing the Health and Environmental Dangers of Women's Sanitary Products and Disposable Diapers. Despite a realization that cloth can be better for the environment and babies, many parents still don’t know how diaper services work. “I think it’s really important to explain to people what to actually expect, and also how a diaper service can actually be even more eco-friendly than laundering at home,” Stief says. “First, a representative helps you choose the number of diapers you’ll need per week and other accessories, like diaper covers.
14
Seattle
SeattleAwakenings.com
Then an eco-friendly vehicle from our fleet will drop off a diaper hamper and liner designed to contain odors, plus a stack of clean, sanitized and soft cloth diapers and anything else you order, such as diaper covers, wipes or skin care products for your baby,” Stief continues. He notes that parents do not even need to rinse the diapers before placing them in the hamper, which they set outside their door once a week. “The dirty diapers are picked up and your driver will leave you with clean, fresh ones,” he says. Stief explains that dirty diapers are transported to their laundering facility, where they are washed with a 98 percent biodegradable formula, a very small amount of bleach, and hot water. “The finished product is pH balanced to match your baby’s skin and has less residual chlorine than Seattle’s tap water,” Stief finishes. “From an environmental standpoint, there is no better way to wash your diapers and have them be as thoroughly cleaned and sanitized as we can get them. Not only do we save water and energy, even after factoring in transportation, but new parents also have more time to enjoy their baby, too.” For more information: 206-634-2229 or BabyDiaperService.net.

or more than 50 years, women have appreciated the freedom that birth control pills offer. They simply take a little pill every day and rest easy, fairly assured that an unplanned pregnancy won’t occur. However, there’s actually a lot not to love about “The Pill”, especially its long-term side effects. “The sexual freedom that women have fought so hard to obtain has been won at a terrible price,” advises Naturopathic Doctor Sherrill Sellman, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, author of The Hormone Heresy: What Women Must Know about Their Hormones. That price includes blood clots and even death from heart attacks and strokes in young women. As early as 1963, an article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association linked The Pill to venous thrombosis, or blood clots. By 1968, at least one cancer journal, CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, had linked cancer to the use of the steroid hormones contained in oral contraceptives. In 1973, Scandinavian researchers warned of the link between oral contraceptives and strokes. “In December 2002, the U.S. government published its biannual Report
on Carcinogens that added all steroidal estrogens to the list of known human carcinogens,” says Sellman, “The gravity of this finding cannot be overstated: All estrogens used in HRT [hormone replacement therapy] and oral contraceptives have now been proven unequivocally to cause cancer.” Yet, regardless of the many downsides, The Pill remains the most common method of birth control worldwide, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with usage by 16 percent of married American women. Elsewhere, users include 29 percent of British women and 40 percent of women in France and the Netherlands.
Filches Vitamins
“Birth control pills are vitamin robbers, and this is the source of the health risks that accompany the use of The Pill,” says Ross Pelton, a registered pharmacist, certified clinical nutritionist and author of The Pill Problem. Oral contraceptives deplete more bodily nutrients than any other class of drugs, says Pelton, who blogs regularly at NaturalPharmacist.net. However, he adds, women taking The Pill even as long as 10 years may
not notice any obvious health problems. “Maybe she’ll first notice a lack of energy, but doesn’t connect the dots and realize that magnesium, B12 and numerous other nutrients involved in energy production are depleted,” he explains. The nutrient-depleting effects of The Pill were recognized as early as 1975 in a study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, but it carried no recommendations for replacing them. Some of these nutrients are essential for the production of brain chemicals, called neurotransmitters, including mood-elevating dopamine. An affected woman can become depressed, a condition closely linked to the use of The Pill, according to a German study published in 2013 in the journal General Hospital Psychiatry. The Pill’s steroidal hormones also reduce the body’s natural accumulations of disease-preventing antioxidants, increasing vulnerability to diseases of aging, including cancer, diabetes and heart disease, according to Pelton.

LIVE YOUR SONG
It Keeps Us in Tune with Ourselves by Jill Mattson

isten to a traditional West African Griot story: When a tribal woman knows she is pregnant, she goes into the wilderness with a few friends to pray and meditate until they hear the song of the child. They recognize that every soul has its own vibration that expresses its unique flavor and purpose. When the women attune to the song, they sing it out loud. Then they return
and teach it to everyone else. When children are born into the tribe, the village community gathers and sings their song, one unique melody for each unique child. Later, when children begin their education, the village again gathers to chant each child’s song. They sing upon the initiation of adulthood and at the time of their marriage. If at any time someone commits a crime or aberrant

social act, the villagers will circle the individual and chant their song, recognizing that the proper correction is love and the remembrance of identity, because when you recognize your own song you have no desire or need to do anything that would hurt another. Finally, when the soul is about to pass from this world, family and friends gather at the bedside, as they did at birth, and sing the person to the next life. In any culture, a friend is one that knows our song and sings it to us when we have forgotten it. Those that love us are not fooled by the mistakes we’ve made or the dark images we hold about ourself. They remember our beauty when we feel ugly; our wholeness when we are broken; our innocence when we feel guilty; and our purpose when we are confused. Life always reminds us when we are and when we’re not in tune with ourself. When we feel good, we are matching our song. We may feel a little wobbly at times, but so have all the great singers. If we just keep singing, we’ll find our way home. In the end, we shall all recognize our song and sing it well. Modern pioneers in vibrational energy like Sharry Edwards (bioacoustic biology) and Donna Eden (energy medicine) have independently detected that each of us has a fundamental signature frequency that can be equated to our unique song that persists throughout life. We innately seek natural sounds that reinforce and strengthen our song such as the surf, wind or birds. Even the stars and heavens offer songs out of our hearing range that benefit cell-to-cell vibrations within that we intuitively feel as the magic of a midnight sky. At one with the universe, our song contributes its part in the infinite chorus of creation. Jill Mattson is an author, artist, musician and sound healing composer. Her books and CDs, based on 20 years of studying ancient civilizations, support healing and personal growth. Connect at JillsWingsOfLight.com. The Griot story is based on an interpretation by Jane Maluka and Dan Millman.

very year, hundreds of thousands of perfectly usable materials ranging from plumbing fixtures, flooring and lights to countertops and windows are ripped out of homes and end up in landfills. However, many sustainably-minded homeowners are seeking out these items and salvaging them—reusing them in a new home or as part of the remodeling of an existing one. Salvaged home finishings and fixtures add architectural interest, often cost less than their new equivalents, preserve historic value and reduce environmental impact. “Using items that are salvaged is a great choice to keep your remodeling

unique and likely bring an interesting story to what would otherwise be an ordinary fixture.” Elfline and her husband, Doug, remodeled their 1980’s rambler and incorporated a number of salvaged items, including cabinets that were removed from a house on Capitol Hill that is listed on the historical registry. The cabinets came through The RE Store, a nonprofit building supply store in Seattle that offers salvaged materials. Some of the cabinets were used to create an island in the middle of the kitchen that was topped with butcher-block style counter reclaimed from another kitchen. A set of blue lamps, also salvaged, hangs over

the island, and a reclaimed window illuminates a tiny garden. Elfline says it is possible for homeowners to make arrangements directly with other homeowners or construction teams to salvage materials and fixtures, but to save time, she suggests visiting one of the salvage stores in Seattle. “Stores that specialize in salvaged and reused building materials not only curate their selection and offer assistance finding the things you are looking for, but they will also help you avoid problems and understand safety in using some of these reclaimed fixtures and finishings,” she says.
“While using reclaimed pieces can be a little more time consuming and requires a bit more pre-planning and care than walking into a store and purchasing something off the shelf, when it’s done with attention to details the end result is always greener, often more cost efficient, and usually more beautiful whether in a new home or renovation,” Elfline says. “The special touch that comes from repurposed materials really helps make a house a home. I’d encourage everyone to consider salvaged.”

Switching On Health Study of Epigenetics Reveals Power of Nutrition & Lifestyle by lynn Noelte

enetic instructions govern much of how our bodies operate and put some of us at greater risk for chronic illness or accelerated aging. However, a growing body of research, a field known as epigenetics, illuminates how environmental factors can turn these genes on and off. Many of these factors have never been more prevalent throughout history than they are right now, offering both health risks and also opportunities to understand and en-

hance wellness. “People are aging faster than they should and faster than they have to, because they’ve become victims of modern life,” says Dr. Steve Polenz, a chiropractor who is widely known as ‘Dr. Steve’ and uses nutritional healing to help his patients achieve optimal health. Dr. Steve says there are myriad factors that influence declining energy levels and wellness. “It’s all these unseen things every day—exposure to chemicals, heavy metals, even emotionally toxic people,” Dr. Steve says. Science has long confirmed that environmental factors can change and compromise our DNA. Researchers at John Hopkins University recently demonstrated a connection between genetic information and reversible changes to DNA, an area of science known as epigenetics. The study, released last month by the American Journal of Human Genetics, sheds light on mechanisms that allow environmental factors to alter an individual’s genetic material, opening the door to a better understanding of the longterm consequences of exposure to chemicals and other toxins. Dr. Steve notes these epigenetic changes caused by environmental factors can affect how cells and even entire organs function, leading to signs of adrenal stress, blood sugar issues, afternoon energy lows, feeling cold or tired, having a compromised immune system, and other signs of declining

Surprisingly enough, Dr. Steve believes that diet is not always the entire problem. “A lot of people change their diet and improve only a little bit, or not at all, and feel really frustrated,” he explains. “Oftentimes they’ve been to different doctors and they haven’t gotten answers, which is frustrating too,” he continues, explaining that other environmental factors such as heavy metals and even air pollution may contribute to overburdening some people’s bodies.

Dr. Steve’s approach involves testing to determine the specific toxins causing health problems and finding out what organs and body systems are being affected, followed by developing an individualized treatment plan using high quality whole foods supplements.
“The environment affects us all, but it affects us in different ways, so we need customized healthcare,” he says. “Epigenetics is key. We’re all different people.” Many of his patients have experiences reading about a particular supplement, purchasing and taking it, only to find it helped very little, a process which could be compared to flying blind, Dr. Steve notes. “Once you try things that haven’t worked, you’re surprised when we point you in the right direction,” he says. Dr. Steve encourages people to view health as a process, and gradually implement changes such as replacing toxic household cleaners with natural products, reducing exposure to genetically modified foods and chemical laden processed foods, getting more sleep and drinking good quality filtered water. “As long as a person is moving in the right direction, I don’t care if it takes them five days or five years,” Dr. Steve says. “My patients are often pleasantly surprised at what a big impact results from some small life changes and customized nutritional support.” Green Lake Chiropractic is located at 9750 3rd Ave. NE, Seattle. ence for women summarized by the ancient Romans as “salus per aquam,” health through water, and make the healing and restorative tradition of the sauna available to the Seattle area. “I first experienced ‘taking a sauna’ in Russia and I was hooked,” says owner Crystal Carlson. “Putting yourself through the circuit of heat and cold is so rejuvenating and it immediately and visibly improves your health. I started wondering why we didn’t have a spa like that in my own neighborhood, and was inspired to create one,” she continues. It would be a seven year journey, but Carlson opened the doors to Ladywell’s Vitality Spa & Sauna just over one year ago. For an entry fee of $36 ($25 early bird rates before 2 p.m. Tuesdays through Friday), women have unlimited access to three heat therapy rooms, a dry cedar sauna, an infrared Himalayan pink salt sauna, an herbal steam bath, three stainless steel spas, hot tub (103 degrees), tepid tub (96 degrees), and cold plunge with waterfall (56 degrees). Guests also enjoy complimentary organic herbal tea in the resting lounge, which offers a couch, stretching mats and a hanging chair. Ladywell’s provides a locker and towels, shampoo, body wash, and conditioner. There is no time limit. Massage therapy services using house-made natural products are available for an additional charge. The spa is open to women only, and most guests choose to experience the spa nude, although swimsuits are allowed. Women come to Ladywell’s alone or with friends, and it has become a popular place for quiet, relaxed birthday parties and other celebrations. “Taking a sauna, or taking the baths is one of the oldest forms of preventative healthcare medicine we have as humans,” Carlson says. “In very simplified terms, when you heat your body up it thinks it has a fever, when you contrast with the cold plunge or cool rinse, it thinks it gets a chill.”

Top Carlson explains that studies show the body responds to temperature changes by mobilizing extra white blood cells and boosting immune responses. “So while you are relaxing your muscles, clearing your mind by focusing on your breath to be able to tolerate the heat, and expelling toxins through sweating, you are actually building your health and immune system,” she continues. Of course, not all benefits are physical: the peaceful atmosphere of the sauna encourages deep relaxation, according to many guests. “Women leave here with bright eyes, apples in their cheeks and a rejuvenated state of mind, and that gives my heart such joy,” Carlson says. “Everyday I witness women’s stories of healing and peace of body, mind and spirit. And no matter why they come or how they are feeling when they arrive, every woman glows when they leave.” Carlson ultimately says she views her business as a mission. “I feel like we help make the women we serve not only look better, they feel better, and thus in a small way, the world is a little bit sweeter place.” Ladywell’s Vitality Spa & Sauna is located at 8538 1st Ave. NW, Seattle. As a leader, when you act (or don’t act) out of fear you lose the respect of those around you and your ability to lead effectively diminishes rapidly. Of course, just recognizing the fear for what it is won’t eliminate it. Here are two quick tips to help you cope in the moment:
1
Take a step back and consider the situation from a neutral third party perspective. Viewing a situation from the point of view of someone who is not involved in it will help you find clarity, and the fear will dissipate. You will realize you do not need to be fearful.
Chosing Confidence Start By Throwing Out the Head Trash by Penny Zenker
H
ead trash: any pattern of self-defeating thoughts, emotions, or actions that get in the way of one’s effectiveness and the effectiveness of others. We all have head trash, because feelings, even negative ones, are a normal part of the human process. Getting rid of your head trash doesn’t mean getting rid of the feelings, and it doesn’t mean you have to be happy and excited every minute of every day. It means you can learn to be in control through active recognition and conscious choices. Everyone has experienced the sensation of feeling completely overwhelmed by emotion, whether it was a time you were angry, or hurt, or afraid. When those feelings threaten to take over and inhibit your functioning as a leader, parent, partner or team member, they have become destructive and it is time to take out the trash. The most powerful head trash? Fear. Fear is a reactionary emotion based on the anticipation of danger. That anticipation might come from a real and present danger being sensed by the body, or it could be from the idea of a danger. For example: if you are told that in the next room there is a live tiger, you will experience fear without actually seeing the tiger—it was the mere perception of a tiger causing fear. Whether or not there actually was a tiger in the next room didn’t influence the response. In that moment, our reality was that there was a tiger, and that we were in danger. If not physical in nature, this perceived fear often expresses itself as being fearful of making the wrong decision or fearful of rejection. Fear shouldn’t be confused with caution, which is more along the lines of risk management: understanding the risk and evaluating the possible outcomes

Create a supportive decisionmaking environment. Sometimes that just means walking away from the people involved to think privately. Sometimes that means asking advice of others not involved in the situation. You will know what is right for you. Imagine not only how much more productive you will be, but imagine the influence and the impact that cleaning up the trash will have on those around you. Emotions are infectious— when you alter the way you behave and present yourself, it will impact your entire team.
