How to choose a school BY LISA STIFFLER

1 S H U TTE RSTOC K

Take your time Websites, open houses and drop-in visits will give you a flavor of a school’s culture and personality, says Jim Rupp, who as Director

of Admissions at Seattle Academy of Arts and Sciences for over 20 years has seen thousands of parents and kids go through the difficult process of choosing a school. But if you want a deeper understanding, you need to invest some time in the classroom. And it’s not enough to pop into classes for a few minutes of observation, he says. Do it that way, and you won’t have any context for what’s going on.

“You’ve got to talk to people,” he says, and avoid visits that are heavily scripted. The best scenario is for prospective students to spend a day at a school with longer stretches in classrooms and opportunities to chat with students. For checking out elementary schools, Rupp says, it’s great for parents to take time to “see how teachers run their classes.” CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE >

2

Get the real scoop Administrators and teachers will try to show their schools at their best. To get the real skinny, Rupp advises students to check in with their peers. This conversation works best out of earshot of adults so the students will be uninhibited and speak frankly. “It is incumbent upon the child to pull aside some kids who go there, and ask them, ‘Do you enjoy this school?’” he said. “It’s amazing how candid the kids will be. Ask them, ‘Are you having fun?’ ” When considering elementary schools, parents might want to put the same question to the younger students, though they can’t reliably go deeper into matters of curriculum or other features of the school. At the same time, says Rupp, “they can tell you if they’re having fun or not.”

3

Give your kid a say While parents will likely write the tuition check, the kids will be walking the halls and taking the classes. Once they reach a certain age, they deserve some say in school choice. “Nobody wants to drag a child kicking and screaming into a school and say, ‘You’ll thank us someday,’ ” Rupp says. For sixth grade kids, if they have a strong reaction to a

6

S E AT T L E ’S C H I L D

SC_SCHOOL2018-new.indd 6

school, parents should listen to their opinion, “but the parents should make the lion’s share of the decision. By ninth grade, it’s a different situation.” By that age, he says, input on the decision “should be at least 50-50, or even the child should make more of the decision.”

4

This isn’t your chance at a “do-over” Robotics lab, class trips abroad, drama club with real costumes and sets. Many of these schools are appealing at any age, and it’s tempting for some parents to fantasize about having a do-over with all the bells and whistles. “They will tell us in a joking way, ‘Boy, I wish I had gone here,’ ” Rupp says. He warns parents not to fall into that trap. Whether or not you would have loved a school, “that’s not going to be any kind of a predictor as to whether your child is going to be happy here.”

5 Kids, be yourself Parents and kids anxious about getting into a select school might be tempted to rehearse for visits and interviews. Rupp says don’t. “The best thing would be to let the child be themselves. Don’t fill them with advice to

‘Be sure you do this and do that, and don’t do this and don’t do that,’ ” he says. “We want to see who the child is naturally.”

6

Parents, chill out Remember that this is about what your child needs to be a happy person, not your dream for their future. “Your anxiety is going to rub off on your child,” Rupp says. “Try to relax and realize the schools are going to work with you to make sure this is the right environment.”

7

Seek a happy fit The questions parents need to ask, says Rupp, include “is this a place where my child would be happy and comfortable spending seven, eight, nine, 10 hours a day? Is there a subculture that will allow your child to be fully part of the school life?” Of course the kids need to learn key academic material, he says, but they should also love coming to school and exploring new interests. “The saddest thing is a child who walks through the door, and who they are that day is who they are when they walk out,” he says. “They need an opportunity to expand their definition of themselves.”

FISW offers an inquiry-based, bilingual and multicultural education to students in preschool through fifth grade. The value of our innovative and dynamic curriculum goes beyond language: Students who learn in two languages develop different ways to think, to process concepts, and to approach problems. Students also grow up within the context of our international community and develop a deep understanding and respect for other cultures. This bilingual and bicultural experience makes them naturally open to new perspectives and ideas. We would love to have you visit and find out more through a tour or an open house. NWAIS ACCREDITED

At JDS, our multi-age, inquiry-based learning program fosters critical thinking, problem solving, confidence, collaboration, leadership, innovation and more – all in a global learning environment. Core academics are enriched with Judaic studies and serve as a foundation for lifelong learning. Ultimately, JDS students know who they are, understand what it means to be part of a community, and are empowered to make a difference in the world by taking action. Our sprawling campus includes a STEAM Innovation Lab, a “Design Lab” complete with maker space, green screen and 3-D printer, a state-of-the-art athletic center and multiple play and exploratory areas. At JDS, curiosity leads to discovery.

LWGMS opened its doors in 1998 as the first secular girls middle school in Seattle. Since then, we have proven that a learning environment encouraging girls to take risks, explore leadership, solve problems, collaborate, and stand up for themselves and others is a model that works. Our challenging curriculum is designed to educate the whole girl: intellectually, socially and emotionally—with a focus on STEAM curriculum and social justice. We empower girls to be strong in mind, body and voice. Visit us at an open house on November 7 or 29 to learn more.

Nestled in 12 acres of woods and meadows, The Little School provides a natural setting for students to expand their creativity and thinking skills while exploring the wider world. The curriculum blends the teacher’s plan with the knowledge and interests that students bring to the class, and results in a program that is dynamic, flexible and responsive. Students develop the ability to navigate life’s transitions, ask questions and become confident advocates for themselves and for others. Special offerings include Spanish, movement, music, art, field trips, extensive library, and extended day and after-school programs.

At Living Wisdom, our goal is to teach life skills through universal spiritual values such as friendship, concentration, will power and courage. Our small classes provide a safe, nurturing environment for growth and allow us to work individually with each child. We strive to encourage each child’s strengths and awaken an enthusiasm for learning; as a result, children who graduate from our program are happy, confident, and secure in themselves. As educators we believe in experiential learning: Opportunities for this holistic approach include yoga, meditation, Nature Awareness and gardening, in addition to the standard academic subjects.

Morningside enjoys an international reputation as an “academic gymnasium” in a safe and caring environment. We offer daily report cards and place students in instructional groups by skill level rather than by age or grade. Our Foundations program focuses on the basics of reading, writing, mathematics, psychology, learning skills, reasoning skills, and developing executive function skills. Struggling learners who are not working up to their potential with LD, ADD, ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia or no diagnosis, typically gain two years in one in their area of greatest deficit. Highly capable students advance because of skill level grouping. Our teacher-student ratio is 1:10.

With support from established bilingual educators from all across the country, we are continuing to build a school that embodies the best of both worlds: the academic rigor of the French curriculum with the student-focused teaching approaches pioneered in the Pacific Northwest. The global mindset our students gain from the immersion environment, as well as the relationships they form here, are gifts that will shape their choices, their opportunities and their paths for the rest of their lives.
