Finding the right school for your child
by SEATTLE’S CHILD STAFFSearching for a school is a daunting task for any family. What should you look for? What questions should you ask? How do you know if a school is the right fit for your child?
Over the years, Seattle’s Child has tackled this topic with many educators
and school choice experts. Here we share the best of their tips, guidelines that should be placed at the heart of any school search process.
Narrow the many options with your own foundational values.
Seattle is home to many stellar, highly rated independent and parochial schools, many with big names on their
alumni lists. In fact, the region has one of the highest rates of private school attendance in the nation with nearly 1 in every 5 students in the city attending an independent school here. Each school offers its own flavor of education in its unique blend of classes, extracurriculars, educational philosophies and values.
CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE
Begin your search by writing down your non-negotiables for your child’s school. For example, list the things you most value in a school, teaching approaches or styles that are important to you and your child, any spiritual, religious or non-religious expec tations you seek in a school, location, etc. Refer to this list as you narrow your choices. Once you’ve ruled out schools that clearly depart from your foundation, consider the following:
A school is more than academics.
When you look at the independent and parochial schools in the Seattle area they’re pretty evenly matched academically, according to school admissions experts. If you compare where their high school grads go to college, for example, many of the same top-tier and Ivy League schools pop up.
So when choosing between two or more schools, the extras are important. Look for what your child is excited about, whether it’s something in the arts, sports or extracurric ular academics. Then consider whether the specific activity your child is interested in is part of the culture of the school or consid ered “extra.”
Comfortable kid = good fit.
Parents need to ask themselves whether a particular school offers an environment where their child would feel happy and comfortable spending up to 10 hours a day. Toward that end, ask yourselves this ques tion: Is there a subculture that will allow my child to be fully part of the school life?
Kids should love coming to school and exploring new interests, even as they learn key academic material. Keep in mind that a school might have numerous activities and programs that your child sparks to. But it’s important to talk to the person who teaches or coaches the program your inexperienced child is interested in to find out how a novice would join in. Perhaps more important to know is what happens if they have great passion but are not greatly skilled in a given sport or activity. Will they be able to partic ipate or be pushed out? Will they be cut or encouraged?
If you’re only hearing about the cham pions and “winners” in a school – whether from school officials, the media or families who have attended – that can be either good news or a red flag. Great programs, whether academic, sport or otherwise extracurricu lar, don’t do your child any good if they are pushed out of participation by a “champions only” bent.
Take your time.
Websites, open houses and drop-in visits will give you a flavor of a school’s culture and personality, but if you want a deeper understanding, you need to invest some time in the classroom. And it’s not enough to pop into classes for a few minutes of observation, experts say. Talk to people.
Consider having your child spend a day at a school with longer stretches in classrooms and opportunities to chat with students. At the elementary school level, it is helpful for parents to sit in and see how teachers run their classes.
Get the real scoop from students.
Administrators and teachers are paid to show a school’s shine. To get the real scoop, students should talk to their would-be peers. These conversations are best out of the earshot of adults so the students will be uninhibited and speak frankly.
When considering elementary schools, parents might want to put the same question to the younger students, though they can’t reliably go deeper into matters of curricu lum or other features of the school.
Give your kid a say.
Although younger kids may not know exactly what they want in a school or how to tell a good fit, once kids reach upper elemen tary, middle or high school, they deserve some say in school choice. For example, if a sixth grader has a strong reaction to a school, parents should listen to the student’s opinion even though they will be making the fuller decision. By ninth grade, Rupp said, decision-making about where to go to school should be 50-50.
Remember it’s their experience, not yours.
While you might be enamored of a school’s robotics lab, class trips abroad, drama club with real costumes and sets and other high-class amenities that your own school never had, your child might not be. Whether or not you would have loved a school is not a good predictor ofwhether your child is going to be happy there.
Don’t rehearse with your child.
Parents and kids anxious about getting into a select school might be tempted to rehearse for visits and interviews. Don’t. The best thing is to encourage children to be themselves. Try not to push them to put on an act with your admonishments and “Be sure you . . ”s. Schools want to see who a child naturally is and what makes them tick to ensure they are a good fit.
Don’t jump ahead.
The pre-K school your child attends is not a promise of a seat in one of Seattle’s elite high schools. Take it one year at a time and remember that finding the right school is about what your child needs to be a happy person, not your dream for their future. Ask a lot of questions.
Questions – and asking lots of them –are primary tools when narrowing down, visiting and, finally, seriously considering whether a specific school is a good fit for your child. This thorough list, compiled by Seattle Learning Center, is a good one to carry through the process.
Don’t forget to ask Key questions for your prospective school
