A Meeting of the Scottish Rite We meet again as a lodge of men united in one service, And as thirty-some we thither come each for an inner purpose. The gavel rings, the ritual swings, thus starts this meet of ours. We invoke deity, say "so mote it be," and the minutes drone on for hours! We're voting tonight with the black and the white, hoping that all choose the lighter; Approving election to this Lodge of Perfection to help us each ever raise higher. More business ensues: we distribute our dues to sundry worthwhile projects. Such-and-so a sum for what sounds like fun, but most for charity's prospects. Goals are laid and plans are made for what we will do this next season: For a good deed story, or the order's glory, everything is done for a reason. Our officers preen as they run this machine -I'm grateful for all their labor. They make worthwhile for us rank-and-file this time that we come to savor; At last we adjourn for another turn of our intervening lives. But we'll gather again, brother and friend, and our fellowship so thrives. We'll meet again as a lodge of men united in one service, And as thirty-some we'll thither come each for an inner purpose.

News from the Personal Representative

Normalcy is on the horizon as we hear and read information from the Governor on opening up the state on 30 June. As this Communicator is being prepared in the last days of June, we have heard from our Grand Master Cameron Bailey that the restrictions imposed by Past Grand Master Coffman through 3 June 2021 will not be continued The Grand Lodge installation was held on 11 June 2021

The health of our members is our primary concern. We continue to hear conflicting statements of national and state health official relaxing the use of masks and social distancing. We will continue to be cautious in the valley. We must conform to the restrictions of the state as a building open to public meetings. As we approach biennial Honors Ceremony of 2021 in September 25 at the Tacoma Scottish Rite, it is a distinct privilege to announce that Brother Ian Hyde, KCCH, has been elected to 33° for 2021 and that Brothers W. Dean Markley and Adam Creighton have been chosen to be KCCH for the year in the Seattle Valley. As reported in our previous Communicator a virtual degree reunion was held in late April but our report that five (5) were raised to Masters of the Royal Secret was incorrect. Two new members joined our valley, with three of the brothers unable to attend the reunion. We hope that This Communicator finds many of the members of the Seattle Valley and their families healthy under these trying conditions. The mid-year solstice will be upon us in the coming weeks, with the warmth of summer and the dropping of leaves in the fall. We will continue our efforts to bring events and fellowship which will be attractive to all this fall before we resume our labors in September. In particular an initiative has been initiated by a number of black hats of recent years and with the leadership of the Knights of St. Andrew, plan are underway to develop their involvement in the many events of the Seattle Valley. Details will be in the September-October issue of the Communicator We will be attempting to schedule for the remainder of the 2021 year with hybrid monthly meetings. The meetings will be opened & closed in a secure manner, with the business and program open to those brothers joining virtually. In addition the meeting of the Eastside Scottish Rite Club (ESRC) has been focusing on the lessons of the degrees of the Scottish Rite and future meetings must also be scheduled through virtual meetings. Please contact Dean Markley, at wdeanm@gmail.com for additional information. Do not forget about our DVD Club All Scottish Rite members of the Seattle Valley receive the Communicator, but may miss the fellowship with their fellow members within the valley and find the difficult-travel-miles to and from our Shoreline building a major problem. Please attend these club meetings through the virtual meetings of ZOOM as they are scheduled. As the Seattle Valley continues its growth, a need has been identified to grow and make decisions in a highly disciplined matter to avoid conflicts. Forms have been developed for signature by leader of the valley on conflict of interest policy, whistle blower policy and document retention policy. They will be reviewed for legal correctness before release. Only leaders of the bodies, and specifically members of the Finance committee, LLC committee will be asked to complete the forms

Fraternally, Sat Tashiro 33° Personal Representative of the S:.G:.I:.G:.

Greetings All, We its finally happening. We are going back to normal and able to meet again. We all know it has been a long time coming and as we get out and about we see friends and family that we have not seen in such awhile, oh the joy. Lets keep everyone safe and healthy. Seattle Scottish Rite building is now open and back to 100% capacity so our concordant bodies and rentals can meet with the only restriction being if one is not vaccinated they must wear a mask. We are so looking forward to seeing the center busy again, always a great time. Our outside rentals are filling up fast. The date book is getting full, looks like everyone is getting those events up and going fast. I would like to send congratulations to all of the Orient of Washington’s Inspector General (33°) and Knights Commander Court Honor (32°KCCH) Designees for 2021. Especially Seattle Valley’s Honorees. Brother Ian Hyde, 33° Designee, along with Brothers Adam Creighton, & Dean Markley 32° KCCH Designees. They are so well deserved. When you see them next send out a congratulations. For those brothers who would like to attend the Honors day, this will be September 25th. Tacoma Valley will be our host valley this year and it looks like its going to be a great time. Along with the Honors day there is always that need for brothers to take part in the day. It looks like they have the team for the 33° in place but are looking for 33° brothers to be understudies as it is never to late to start filling places when needed. If you are interested let me know and I will get you in contact. We are already planning the degree dates for this fall as we have several brothers having turned in their petitions. We are looking to get many more and beat last years of 12 new members. So if you know a brother who would like to join the Scottish Rite, talk with him about how great it is to belong to the valley for Seattle. There is a petition included in this issue but if you need one emailed just let me know as I am happy to help. We have enclosed a survey and would like you to fill it out and email or mail it back to us to help make the valley better informed on what you would like to be. We are always looking to better your experience at the Rite and are always open to make new paths. Like always we want you all involved to make a great place to gather. With the hot weather as of late, know we have a great place to get out of the heat if you need. We are open during the week and would be able to open on the weekend if needed. We don’t want anybody to get taken in due to heat so come enjoy the A/C here at the center. Just let us know if you need any help and we will figure out how to make it happen. As we pause to celebrate our Independence this 4th, let is all remember what we are celebrating. Our Declaration of Independence is a remarkable document. I actually got it out and read it again, never seems to amaze me so I would challenge you to do the same and understand what it means to us all. With all that’s going on lets remember why we are the best country on the planet, and belonging to the best fraternity makes us in the best position to be the light we all talk about.

I hope you all a very Happy Independence day and may you along with your family be safe

Fraternally, Daniel J. Southerland, 32° KCCH General Secretary

NOW IS THE HOUR

by Charles R. Glassmlre

This Short Talk Bulletin is based upon an address given by Most Worshipful Brother Charles R. Glassmire, PGM of Maine, at the semi-annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of New Hampshire in November, 1976. We thank Brother Glassmire, who is Editor of The Maine Mason, for sharing this with us. We are always thinking in Masonry about the word "building." We are told that Masons are builders. Yet how often do we ever stop and think of the true meanings of this word? We should consider it under four headings. First, we must consider the building of the vast universe; that product of the Grand Architect of the Universe; that inestimable gift of God to Man; that structure which we use every day but seldom do we stop to appreciate it and to give thanks. Sometime ago, a group of us stood atop Mount Blanc, at an altitude of 15,000 feet, viewing the majestic Alps. The beautiful fertile valley lay below us with the glaciers above. It was very easy to be awe struck, to close your eyes and to give a prayer of thanks to Almighty God. How often in our own communities do we ever look around us and give thanks for the things that do not have actual physical beauty and yet see beneath them the handiwork of the Great Architect of the Universe? Yes, even sometimes in things which are actually ugly to the sight. Who can look at the town drunk, for instance, and see in him a work of God? Yes, it's a work of God but a neglect of man and perhaps we are largely responsible for much of this neglect. We pass him day by day Iying in the gutter, when perhaps by stretching forth a helping hand, giv-ing a pat on the back or a word of encourage-ment, we might help that man to achieve his rightful place in society, all to the glory of God. It's up to us to help make this universe the place that He intended it to be. Secondly, if we're thinking in terms of building, we must think in terms of the fact that man is a builder and from the day of his birth he is constantly engaged in the building of his own personality and his own character. Every day we have the opportunity to do things which will make us better individuals but so many times we neglect it. There is an old saying which says, "What man needs not nor sows most abundantly grows. " This, of course, in one connotation refers to the weeds in that neglected garden behind the house. But think for a moment of the neglect which permits those weeds to grow inside the mind and the character of each and every one of us. Before long, just as the beautiful flowers are destroyed by the weeds in the garden, so is that great mind which is potentially there destroyed by the weeds of neglect. A little poem says it better: Of all that I hear and see Day by day I am building me. I alone have the right to choose What to reject and what to use. Nobody's workmanship but mine Can keep the structure true and fine, Strong or feeble, false or true. I build myself by the deeds I do. Yes, Brethren, remember we are saved not by what we think but by what we are. Day by day we build ourselves by the deeds we do. Next, if we are going to consider man as a builder, we must appreciate the fact that man is also commissioned to build an ideal social structure and Masons must qualify as living stones for that structure if it is going to be the society it can be. We have another great respon-sibility as Masons. We tell the world that as Masons we take good men and make them better. Are we really doing this today in Masonry? How many times have we had the unpleasant experience of raising a Brother from that Altar and having him go out the door and never seeing him again? Statistically, one out of three of the Brethren that are raised at that Altar will leave that night and never come back. Why? The answer is obvious and perhaps falls into two categories. First of all, we have lost the opportunity by failing to impress upon him the beauties of Freemasonry. We have perhaps done the work in a slipshod fashion. Officers have mumbled the words which have been poorly memorized and the Brother gets very little from it. He sees nothing that you and I have seen as we have gone through Masonry of the things which bring us back.

Officers have mumbled the words which have been poorly memorized and the Brother gets very little from it. He sees nothing that you and I have seen as we have gone through Masonry of the things which bring us b Secondly, so many times the man's dignity is insulted. How often have we unfortunately seen a man literal-ly ridiculed for the amusement of some of the Brethren on the sidelines. We tell a man to kneel at the Altar and pray to Almighty God and then tell him to arise, follow the conductor and fear no danger, only at a later date to have him treated in such a manner that he can't see the beauties because of the lack of dignity. We are told that of those who do come back, another third are going within a year. Once again, the opportunity is lost. No man becomes a Mason simply by taking three degrees any more than a man becomes a Christian simply by joining a church. It requires work. It requires work on his part and it requires work on our part. First to impart the knowledge to him and secondly to give him a job to do. Only if he is kept busy will he return as you and I have done. Yes, we can take good men and make them better and we have the lools with which to work right there on the Altar.

That great American poet, Brother Edwin Markham, put it in verse this way: We are blind until we see That in the human plan Nothing is worth the making if It does not make the man. Why build these cities glorious If man unbuilded goes? In vain we build the work unless The builder also grows.

10 S e a t t l e S c o t t i s h R i t e

Lastly, my Brethren, as we speak in terms of building, we must appreciate the fact that from the moment we are born until the day we die we are constantly engaged in the building of that house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. How many of us go through life con-sciously building that house? As young men we're immortal. No young man ever thinks of the possibility of dying. It's only when we get older that we realize that we cannot expect an exemption from the common fate of man, but sometimes by the time that realization comes, it's too late and we have not begun, let alone finished the building of that house not made with hands. I suggest to you that if you have not started building it yet, now is the hour. We are very fortunate to have religion to assist us in this and I don't mean necessarily the member-ship in any particular church or sect. I'm thinking in terms of the definition of religion which says, "Religion is the life of God in the soul of man. " We have the power to reach God in prayer and yet most of us waste that power. I suspect that ninety percent of all of the prayers that are wafted Heavenward are never heard because they are simply a repetition of the "gimmies." "Gimmie" this, "gimmie" that, "gimmie" me something else, when really what we should be praying for is the strength and the character to carry on in daily life, working for those things which are pleasing in His sight as we build our house not made with hands. Oh, it's a pretty tough world as we look around. Many times we come home discouraged by what we see--war and pestilence on one hand, dishonesty in high places on the other hand. We may get into bed at night and with all these things around us find it very difficult to sleep. Unfortunately, too many people in this culture are turning to drugs. There's no answer here. Drugs may provide a small portion of oblivion, but later the problem is still there. Other people say if you come home at night and get into bed and can't sleep, that you should count sheep. I don't believe this works either. No, Brethren, if you come home at night, get into bed and can-not sleep, don't count sheep--talk to the Shepherd. In the meeting notice of a Lodge in one of the Western Jurisdictions, we recently saw an item which sums it up nicely: "A favorite pastime with many people-- especially women--is rearranging furniture. "Don't you think it is about time we, the human race, get busy and rearrange our mental furniture? Well, I do, and I think we had better do it real fast. "First of all, we should take everything from the walls of the mind. Then we should sweep the floor and scrub it so it will be clean. "Next, we ought to change our thoughts let us move the hatred table into the love corner, the sinful dresser behind the door of forgiveness, and the beds of prejudice by the wall of kindness. "After this is done, we can lie down and rest with a clean mind and life." Brother Builders, Now is the hour!

This year we honor those brothers who have been so instrimental to our craft and given so much of themselves with high recognition. Congratulations to all this years recipients.

Inspector General Honorary The white caps are worn by those who have been honored with the 33° Inspector General Honorary. The Thirty-third degree is conferred by the Supreme Council upon members of the Rite in recognition of outstanding service to the Rite, or in public life, to the principles taught in the Degrees. The 33° cannot be asked for and if asked for must be refused. At its biennial session, the Supreme Council elects members of the Rite to receive the degrees. These 33° Scottish Rite Masons are Inspectors General Honorary and honorary members of the Supreme Council. The active members of the Supreme Council are chosen from among them. A member must have previously been invested with the Rank and Decoration of Knight Commander of the Court of Honour, be a KCCH for at least four years and have attained the age of 35 years before he can be nominated

Knight Commander Court of Honor

The red caps are worn by those members who are 32° KCCH. At its biennial session certain 32° Scottish Rite Masons who have been 32° Masons at least four years, who have rendered signal service to the Rite, are chosen by the Supreme Council to receive the Rank and Decoration. The members who hold it are designated 32° KCCH. KCCH stands for Knights Commander of the Court of Honor. It is not a degree but an investiture bestowed upon members deserving recognition for faithful services to the Rite. It is one of the great honors in all Scottish Rite Freemasonry to be designated to receive this honor.
