News from the Personal Representative
T
he summer months are rapidly coming to a close. We are looking forward to a resumption of our meetings and degrees, as we resume our practices for the 29th and 30th degree in early September, with an outstanding schedule of meetings in September and October with a speaker from Sound Transit in September on the efforts underway to alleviate the congestion on our highways and roads, with the October meeting being our annual Feast of Tishri, hosted by the Lodge of Perfection. We are planning a new look for the Feast of Tishri, and encourage all Scottish Rite members and friends of other valleys to attend. The dinner and the Feast of Tishri will be held in the dining room with toasts in a table lodge setting.
The meetings of our two new clubs, one in the South-end of King County meeting at Verity Lodge, and the other in the Eastside meeting at Bellevue Masonic Center will resume their labors with meetings scheduled in the fall. The members of the Southside Scottish Rite Club meet in Verity Masonic Center in Kent, and Brother Joe Marll can be contacted for information on upcoming meetings and topics at josephmarll@ gmail.com. They cover a range of topics at their meetings, ranging from Master Craftsman to undertaking the performance of hitherto rarely performed degrees each year to our new class. The Eastside Scottish Rite Club (ESRC) meeting will be held at their new facility in Redmond, which is located at 8561 Willows Road NE, Redmond, WA. Please contact Dean Markley at wdeanm@gmail.com for upcoming dates and the respective programs. All Scottish Rite members of the Seattle Valley receive the Communicator, but may miss the fellowship with their fellow members within the valley and find the difficult-travel-miles to-and-from our Shoreline building a major problem. For these members, you are invited to attend one of the clubs in your area. Your attendance at the club meetings is tantamount to attending our stated meetings. In July, Brother John Hairston, a member of the Prince Hall Grand Lodge in Washington, was a featured speaker at one of our Saturday events, speaking on the origin of the Prince Hall during the 1770’s. Over 30 brethren, and guests were in attendance, and we left with an appreciation of the struggles undertaken by the founders to start this new Grand Lodge. As a side note, our General Secretary, Illustrious Greg Goodrich, 33°, has been studiously working on a history of the first 100 years of Seattle Scottish Rite through the 1972. Many interesting stories are being found, such as the number of members, who were dignitaries and those involved in the early development of our state and region, and we hope to hear in the future the results of his study. The plan is to have a written history of our Valley for future reference. The Rite Care of Washington will henceforth be known as Early Life, Speech and Language, with a new logo, and reference to its early beginning from the efforts of the Scottish Rite. Read the article on this change in this Communicator. Under the direction of Angelique Leone, its new director, growth of the organization is evident throughout the state. Fraternally, Sat Tashiro, 33° Personal Representative of the S:.G:.I:.G:.

O
nce again the class of 2016 has made another step in their Scottish Rite journey. The Seattle Chapter of Rose Croix conferred the 17th & 18th degrees this past June and the class has finish the first part of the Master Craftsman. They are looking forward to the 29th and 30th degrees that will be presented on September 10th. I hope to see as many brethren as possible to make them meaningful and exciting to our newest members. We have an exciting stated meeting in September where we will have the opportunity to hear what Sound Transit has planned for the Puget Sound corridor (currently there is a light rail stop planned for 145th street). This meeting is open to the public so I encourage you to bring anyone that is interested in the subject. You are welcome to bring them to our 6:30 dinner too. We just need you to make reservation for them so we will have enough food.
Finance Committee
W
e are looking to add one or two new members to our finance committee. The ideal candidate(s) should hold a University degree and have experience with banking, investments, or the daily running of a successful business. This brother does not necessarily have to be a professional “numbers guy but good judgment, logic, curiosity, and a commitment to accountability and the long-term financial stability of the Seattle Scottish Rite are vital traits. The committee meets roughly four times a year so it will not be a big drain on your time. Our current committee consists of five members with backgrounds in Management, Banking, Investments, Accounting, and Legal. The presence of a fully engaged finance committee is a strong indication that our organization is committed to good stewardship and is actively building and preserving the financial resources necessary to support the mission of Seattle Scottish Rite, both for the short and the long term. If you are interested or would like further information please contact me. Fraternally, Greg Goodrich, 33° General Secretary

Speech Clinic NEWS
fter much thought, research and consideration, RiteCare has decided to change the name from RiteCare of Washington to Early Life Speech & Language. Early Life Speech & Language is the only organization that offers free speech and language therapy in the state of Washington. Speech and language services for children are severely limited; either the child does not qualify for service, services are too expensive, or services are limited by a billable hour or insurance coverage. We’re here to help, just as we’ve been since 1984.
T
he change in no way reflects Scottish Rite’s affiliation. Early Life Speech & Language is still a Scottish Rite charity and will proudly continue to be. For those of you wondering, Early Life Speech & Language is a dba. RiteCare of Washington is still the legal name.

THE GRAND BALL FREEMASONS’ HALL, LONDON · SATURDAY 30TH SEPTEMBER 2017 GRAND PATRON: THE GRAND MASTER, HRH THE DUKE OF KENT, KG, GCMG, GCVO, ADC 11th June 2016 Dear Sir and Brother, We are writing to inform you of a most exciting event planned for the celebrations of the Tercentenary of the United Grand Lodge of England in 2017: The Grand Ball. On Saturday 30th September 2017, our home, Freemasons’ Hall in Great Queen Street, London, will be transformed into the venue for The Grand Ball. This will be the highlight of the social calendar for the Tercentenary celebrations, but will also be an opportunity for Brethren of any rank, and from all Provinces and Districts, to be present at one of the official UGLE celebrations with their families and friends. The evening will commence at 8.30pm with a Champagne reception, and finish with bacon sandwiches for the survivors at 3am! It will be a suitably grand event to befit the 300th Anniversary of the institution, and is being generously supported and subsidised by UGLE, enabling our iconic building to be beautifully prepared, and food and drinks to be available throughout the night—all included in the ticket price of £160 per person. ($210.00) Various entertainments will be placed in several different areas of the building, including the Grand Temple, which will be transformed into one of the largest raised dance floors in London. There will be considerable variety, including a big band, a jazz group, a ceilidh, discos (both ‘silent’ and noisy), and quieter rooms to enjoy a glass of wine and chat to your guests. Although there will be plentiful and varied food available throughout the night, there is not a formal dinner. However, we will be looking into offering deals at local restaurants for those Brethren who wish to dine beforehand with their guests. We are also attempting to arrange deals in nearby hotels, so that you are able to spend what is left of the night (or weekend) in comfortable surroundings. We can promise all those who attend a fabulous night, and are hoping to welcome Brethren and guests from across the country, and from other countries. We would therefore be grateful if you could distribute this as widely as possible across your Provinces and Districts, and encourage all those that can attend to do so. Tickets will go on sale via the website (www.thegrandball.uk) at 9am on Friday 30th September 2016 (exactly a year before the Ball), and will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis so that everyone has an opportunity to buy tickets. Even though there will be up to 1,500 tickets available, we expect demand to be high—so early booking will be essential. Please do encourage brethren to sign-up to our mailing list via the website to ensure they are kept up to date with all our planning and preparation in the coming months—and so they don’t miss out when ticket sales commence! There is also a Facebook page (www.facebook.com/thegrandball) and a Twitter account (www.twitter.com/grandball2017) which you can like and follow for updates. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us on committee@thegrandball.uk. We look forward to seeing you at the Ball! Yours sincerely and fraternally, The Grand Ball Committee

The Boys of “36”
What Do “The Boys of ‘36” Want To Tell The Masons Of ‘16 As you know the idea of “winning” in our Lodges, Temples and Valleys is about the psychology and attitude of prospering, and helping other people prosper. It’s about overcoming any internal obstacles to clear, clean and authentic communication with each other, and about showing the public the pride and joy we feel about ourselves. It is also about promoting the atmosphere that, as a band of Brothers, we care about each other. Working and participating is ultimately about creating something that is alive and thrives with a spirit of its own. I love the word empowerment. Em is from the Latin word, “to give”, to give power or to feel power. And we are powerful. Empowerment is partly about confidence and it is partly about that word heart which as you know is the root term of the word courage. (Le coeur is the word heart in French.) And it’s about Enthusiasm, the root term of that being Thusos, which means God in Greek, Theos in Latin. Regardless of anyone’s concept of it, this Universal Spirit it is coming through us when we are enthusiastic. Translated it means that when after a particularly busy, a particularly grueling planning session, perhaps in dealing with differences of opinion, you draw on that reserve down deep of “knowing who we are”: One team, one proud organization. We as an organization cannot get to where we want to be without engendering a feeling of camaraderie, of purpose, and a shared sense of identification. When any one member of any of our Order goes into a slump, or misses talking about our history, benefits, or mission, when any single person fails to think about creating a better and more cooperative future, then it affects everybody else in the organization. How do we do it? As if on a team of rowers, we must be technically proficient stroke after stroke. With our minds in the boat, stroke after stroke, we do one percent better at one thousand things. We have our organizational goals, as well as our individual goals emotionally embedded. We show up by example. We do more than is asked of us because we know who and what we are connected to. The mystic bonds of affection that we feel in Masonry, takes us above ordinary to something exceptional. As a result, we enjoy coming to work meetings versu thinking we have to come to meetings. Why? Because as team-oriented and goal-oriented rowers in a boat we create something so tuned it almost becomes sacred: We know what we are committed to. And we will keep relationships strong because of that commitment, that higher purpose. We will seek to repair relationships that have been wounded. Our Northwest Nautical Theme Great university shell or triabl canoe racing crews, certainly have within them individuals who have exceptional talents and strengths, but there are no stars. The synchronized flow that comes from a team, one where its individual members care about one another, one whose members help the others by lending them best practices and personal success secrets, becomes a symphony of performance, of perfectly arranged notes that become melody. Certainly you take pride in your individuality but great crews are made up of blends - the blending of discipline, mental capacity, professionalism, attitude, and the idea that service to others is one of our highest and most pleasurable of callings. But no team is a team until it feels itself a team, and then acts it. Each person is open, way open to lending their unique talents to others. The Nazis I many times talk about the indomitable spirit and incredible effort put forth by the 1935 University of Washington Huskies Crew team that beat the cheating Nazis, and overcame the sickness of one of its crewmembers, to win that particular olympics’ eight man crew race. Several points brought out in the book “Boys In The Boat”, a book written about that time and team, come to mind when we talk about getting all members to engage, to care deeply about their own professionalism, and to care deeply about the Craft; especially younger ones, the Millennials; to understand how what they do now, and what they learn now, and how they work on and create good relationships now, will not only have a major impact on Masonry’s future but will also follow them throughout their lives This, as we read in the boiok Brothers, is the time to show up and be counted, to be account – able. The key, as the book’s author Daniel Brown says, lies in understanding the following: “That it is all about the team effort, the supporting each other, the psyching each other up, the understanding that when one fails we all fail. It is about the perfectly synchronized flow of muscle, oars, and water. Just as the shell is a part of the oarsmen, or the canoe a part of its rowers, the oarsmen are part of the boat.” It is the same within any organization, any team, or in any family with which we are associated. As did the Boys of ’36, we turn the experience of working together into something bigger than ourselves, into something about survival, about overcoming difficulties, about knowing we have all had hard times but that what we have at this organization or family is something exceptional, an organization to really feel secure in, to sink our teeth in. That by pulling together we can help each other deal with those inner struggles we all have and intermingle it with other-nourishment, other-centrism, and mutual growth.
Seattle Scottish Rite 9 The question then evolves, how will you spark your own creativity so that innovation and innervation stays at fever pitch? How will you see yourself so much in the light of a professional that burnout and giving up can never set in? How will you allow your ego to stop hating its own funeral, make amends, make up, forgive others, ask forgiveness, accept apologies and join forces? It take a “C” I teach in my seminars, Character. It all turns into something called flow, something called infinite grace, something holy, something about undying beauty, which gives us a bigger reason for being committed to, consistently engaged with, caring about, and participative in Masonic efforts doesn’t it? By doing so, we will all reap in the rewards of a future we can all be proud of, a future that’s foundation is so strong that future generations will use us as models as the way to keep a foundation strong. We do know one thing for certain don’t we; example isn’t the most important thing in life, it’s the only thing. The ability to yield, to bend, to give way, to accommodate, to compromise, to cooperate, to collaborate, to be consistent, to share best practices is a source of the strength we find in another person but only insofar it is helmed in inner resolve and surrounded by principle – the principle that I too as a leader or future leader commit to those same positive character traits. It all goes back to the heart – le coeur, about how much heart we will give to the effort of being hell-bent to succeed; this while simultaneously having the softness to bend, to be vulnerable, for that too is a measure of the heart. And all this said, like oarsman in a boat, if one is out of sync, or say in an orchestra with one member out of tune, as the proverbial weaklink saying goes, it can destroy the harmony, flow, swing and strength of the entire crew, the entire organization. If even one person is not engaged, or sabotages the others by choosing to disengage, to not work on their relationship-enhancement skills, to not engage potential petitioners with a deeper more emotional reason to be associated with us, well then the entire chain comes apart. This is why holding our peers accountable, being communicative and forthright, and of course modelling what we want is so critical. In other words, we all, each of us take on the responsibility for looking for ways to strengthen our individual links. There are methods for doing this and we will seek them out and practice them for we know that affirmations without discipline is delusion. Agility. It just flat comes down to agility; the pondering, the creativity, the experimenting, the risk-taking, the honing, and the working with each other so that the whole are strengthened. Anything to get the door of communication open, and anything to keep it propped. - Mac Macdonald Mac Alexander Macdonald, 32° - Valley of Seattle, author and corporate trainer, President of The LYFE Enhancement Company. A Lesson for Freemasons or, a series of Moral Observations on the instruments of Masonry. From “The Spirit of Masonry” - 1843
T
he various instruments which we of this profession make use of, are all emblematical or picturesque of the conduct of life we ought to persevere in.
The RULE directs us to observe punctually every gospel duty; to press forward in the right path, neither inclining to the right nor left hand, for the sake of any transient amusement or gratification whatsoever; it forbids us to give into the least inclination or propensity into the curve of life, and reminds us to beware of the least tendency to a circle, either in religion or morals! - not to mind (because they have seldom any other than selfish views) neither outs, or ins in politics; and to have in all our conduct eternity in view. The LINE should make us pay the strictest attention to that line of duty which has been given us, or rather which was marked out to us, by our great Benefactor and Redeemer. It teaches us to avoid all kinds of double-dealing, both in conversation and actions; it points out the direct but narrow path that leads to a glorious immortality; and that sincerity in our profession will be our only passport thither. This line, like Jacob’s ladder, connects heaven and earth together; and, by laying hold of it, we climb up to that place where we shall change this short line of time for the never-ending circle of eternity. The PLUMB-LINE admonishes us to walk erect and upright in our Christian vocation; not to lean to a side, but to hold the scale of justice in equal poise; to observe the just medium between temperance and voluptuousness; to fathom the depth of our limited capacities, and to make our several passions and prejudices of education fall plumb in, or coincide with, our line of duty. The SQUARE will teach us to square all our actions by this gospel rule and line, and to make our whole conduct harmonise with this most salutary scheme. Our behaviour will be regular and uniform, not aspiring at things above our reach, nor pretending to things above our finite capacities, nor to affect things above what our circumstances can possibly bear. In our expenses, therefore, we shall neither ape those that are placed in a more exalted sphere, nor attend so much to the glitter of gold as to sink beneath our proper station; but we shall observe the golden mean, “And always to our acres join our sense, Because ‘tis use that sanctifies expense.” The COMPASSES will inform us that we should in every station learn to live within proper bounds, that we may, therefore, be enabled to contribute freely and cheerfully to the relief of the necessities and indigencies of our fellow-creatures. Hence we shall rise to notice, live with honour, and make our exit in humble hopes of compassing what ought to be the main pursuit of the most aspiring genius, a crown of glory. The LEVEL should advise us that, since we are all descended from the same common stock, partake of the like nature, have the same faith and the same hope through the redemption, which
S e a t t l e S c o t t i s h R i t e 11
render us naturally upon a level with one another, that we ought not to divest ourselves of the feelings of humanity; and though distinctions necessarily make a subordination among mankind, yet eminence of station should not make us forget that we are men, nor cause us to treat our brethren, because placed on the lowest spoke of the wheel of fortune, with contempt; because a time will come, and the wisest of men know not how soon, when all distinctions, except in goodness, will cease, and when death - that grand leveller of all human greatness - will bring us to a level at the last. From hence, too, the sceptic, the shallow reasoner, and babbling disputer of this world, may learn to forbear the measuring of infinity by the dull level of his own grovelling capacity, and endeavour, by way of atonement for his insults upon every thing that tends to mankind, either good or great, to vindicate the ways of God to man. From your MALLET and CHISEL, you may likewise know what advantages accrue from a proper education. The human and unpolished mind, like a diamond surrounded with a dense crust, discovers neither its sparkling nor different powers, till the rough external is smoothed off, and beauties, till then unknown, rise full to our view. Education gives, what a chisel does to the stone, not only an external polish and smoothness, but discovers all the inward beauties latent under the roughest surfaces. By education our minds are enlarged, and they not only range through the large fields of matter and space, but also learn with greater perspicuity - what is above all other knowledge - our real duty to God and man. Your TROWEL will teach you that nothing is united together without proper cement: no strict union, nor external polish can be made without it. And, as the Trowel connects each stone together by a proper disposition of the cement, so charity, that bond of perfection and of all social union (which I earnestly recommend to you all), links separate minds and various interests together; and, like the radii of a circle, that extend from the centre to every part of the circumference, makes each member have a tender regard for the real welfare of the whole community. But as some members will be refractory in every society, your Hammer will likewise teach you how to use becoming discipline and correction towards such like offenders. If they will not submit to rule, you may strike off the excrescences of their swelling pride, till they sink into a modest deportment. Are they irregular in their practices? Your Hammer will instruct you to strike off each irregularity, and fit them to act a decent part on the stage of life. Do any affect things above their stations? Your Hammer will teach you to press them down to their proper level, that they may learn, in the school of discipline, that necessary knowledge - to be courteous. What the HAMMER is to the workman, that enlightened reason is to the passions in the human mind: it curbs ambition, that aspires to its own and neighbor’s hurt: it depresses envy, moderates anger, checks every rising frailty, and encourages every good disposition of the soul; from whence must arise that comely order, that delightful self complacency, “Which nothing earthly gives or can destroy, The soul’s calm sunshine, and the heart-felt joy.” Thus, from our instruments may we all be instructed to raise a stately fabric of good works, upon the strong foundation of faith, that we may be fitted at last to inhabit that glorious house, not made with hands, eternal in the Heavens!
