18 SEASON
SPRING/SUMMER
WELCOME TO BENAROYA HALL BENAROYA HALL opened in 1998 and is Seattle’s most visited arts venue.* Known for its world-renowned acoustics, unique architecture and beautiful art, the Hall is not only the home of the SEATTLE SYMPHONY — it is host to hundreds of public and private events every year, including concerts, lectures, graduation ceremonies and receptions of all kinds. Now celebrating the 20th anniversary of the venue, BENAROYA HALL offers the deep variety of artistic and educational programming you see in this brochure, from one-night-only lectures to week-long music celebrations, and everything in between. In addition to a multitude of local performing arts groups and speakers, Benaroya Hall is pleased to present the seventh year of Live @ Benaroya Hall, a concert series that features an amazing lineup of dynamic and eclectic music. Events are always being added, so join our email list and find us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for the latest concert announcements. Whether you’re attending a sold-out concert in the S. Mark Taper Foundation Auditorium, a company meeting in the Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall, a banquet in the Samuel & Althea Stroum

“A masterpiece of technical skill, taste, imagination, craftsmanship and inspiration.” Thus did the hyper-critical Hector Berlioz sum up his thoughts on Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, one of the most beloved of Beethoven’s Nine ever since its wildly successful premiere (at which the audience insisted on an immediate repeat of the slow movement). Franz Liszt’s impassioned and innovative Piano Concerto No. 1 will be performed by the winner of the Philharmonic’s 2018 Don Bushell competition, Hexin Qiao. A symphonic work by Finnish composer Helvi Leiviskä rounds out this special concert. LEIVISKÄ LISZT BEETHOVEN

“On the wings of the wind”: Borodin’s “Prince Igor” June 8, 2019 2pm S. Mark Taper Foundation Auditorium
One of Johannes Brahms’ earliest attempts at symphonic writing, the Serenade No. 2 is a lush work boasting some of its composer’s most beguiling melodies and a unique orchestration. Luciano Berio’s Corale and Frank Martin’s Ballade are both arresting and intriguing concertos in miniature, and will feature, respectively, violinist Luke Fitzpatrick and the Philharmonic’s Principal Flute, Sandra Saathoff. The concert concludes with music from Alexander Borodin’s opera Prince Igor: the Overture and the ever-popular Polovtsian Dances. BRAHMS BERIO MARTIN BORODIN
Work TBA Corale Luke Fitzpatrick, soloist Ballade Sandra Saathoff, soloist Prince Igor: Overture and Polovtsian Dances

MUSIC OF REMEMBRANCE
a new chamber opera by composer Tom Cipullo and librettist David Mason
It’s May 19, 1944 — the final evening at home for the great Hungarian poet Miklós Radnóti and his beautiful, devoted wife Fanni. Foreseeing Miklós’s likely fate in a forced labor camp, they ponder why we are given life. Together they find a bright awareness of being: “To learn what love is. To live. To make beautiful things. To die.”
World Premiere – One Night Only! Sunday, May 19, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall, Benaroya Hall 6:45 p.m. Meet the Composer: Tom Cipullo Michael Mayes, baritone Catherine Cook, mezzo soprano Laura Strickling, soprano Music of Remembrance instrumental ensemble Erich Parce, director Alastair Willis, conductor
