2021/2022
ANNUAL REPORT
From the President & CEO
Dear friends,
With the start of the 2021/2022 season, the Seattle Symphony turned a corner. After 18 challenging months, the season’s Opening Night marked the first time the full orchestra performed together for a live audience since March 2020. In this season of milestones, first and foremost was the return of the live music experience at Benaroya Hall.
Throughout the 2021/2022 season, we witnessed dramatic moments. When Ray Chen’s violin string broke in the middle of his debut performance with the orchestra, Concertmaster Noah Geller passed him his instrument without missing a beat. The music played on.
We shared solemn reflections. Through the world premiere of Beyond the Hills, a Symphony commission by Paul Chihara, and Improvisations on EO9066 by Seattle-born multi-instrumentalist Kishi Bashi, we marked the 80th Anniversary of Executive Order 9066, which authorized the incarceration of innocent Japanese Americans during the Second World War.
We were swept away. Conductor Emeritus Ludovic Morlot and the musicians took us on a journey “From the Canyons to the Stars...” through Olivier Messiaen’s iconic work, brought to life with vivid landscape videography created by artist Deborah O’Grady.
With the return of live performances, ticket sales began to rebound yet remained below pre-pandemic levels. The support of the Symphony’s donor family played a critical part in sustaining the orchestra’s operations. This generosity allowed the Symphony to fully restore musician and staff salaries and hours, a critical step in the long-term recovery and sustainability of the organization. You can read more about the season’s financials on page 4 of this report.
In the 2021/2022 season, we began the work of recovery that continues to this day. While a full recovery from the coronavirus pandemic will take several more years, we are moving forward with optimism. Through the support of our community, the power of music is bringing people together again and lifting the human spirit. And together we can look forward to a bright future.
With thanks for all you do,
Krishna Thiagarajan President & CEO Leslie Jackson Chihuly ChairOUR MISSION

Financial Report
In the 2021/2022 fiscal year, the Seattle Symphony welcomed live audiences back to Benaroya Hall. The resulting rebound in ticket sales, coupled with generous philanthropic support from our community and continued federal relief funding, allowed the Symphony to approach a balanced level of operations while maintaining the reserve created during the previous year for use later in the recovery.
Our recently audited financial statements show earned revenue increased to $8M, up from $2.6M in the prior fiscal year. Support from our donor family remained generous at $12.6M, slightly higher than the pre-pandemic amount of $12.2M in FY19. We were able to secure additional federal relief funding of $5.1M in fiscal year 2022.
The musicians and staff were returned to full hours and compensation, bringing operating expenses to $30M for the year, an increase of $12.3M. The Symphony ended the year with $10M in total net assets. There was no activity in the operating reserve, which maintains a balance of $6.8M.
As ticket sales slowly rebound to robust pre-pandemic levels and federal relief wanes, the Seattle Symphony remains immensely grateful to the generous community of music lovers who continue to sustain the orchestra for everyone to enjoy.
Thank you for your support!
