ANNUAL REPORT 2022/2023

From the President & CEO

Dear friends,

The Seattle Symphony’s 2022/2023 season was a positive step forward in our multi-year recovery following the pandemic. We increased live programming, including the return of Tiny Tots and Family Concerts to in-person performances, welcoming the Symphony’s youngest fans back to Benaroya Hall for the first time since 2020. Throughout the season, we presented audiences with not-to-be-missed performances and incredible live experiences, resulting in a healthy rebound in overall attendance.

Opening the season, our signature Opening Night Gala honored Joan Watjen, whose support played an important role in the orchestra’s ability to weather the economic impacts of the pandemic. The Opening Night Concert, conducted by Conductor Emeritus Ludovic Morlot and featuring the Symphony’s own Concertmaster Noah Geller and Principal Cello Efe Baltacıgil, kicked off a sensational season that would be filled with many more unforgettable moments at Benaroya Hall.

Among the countless highlights, composer and conductor Tan Dun introduced Seattle audiences to the spectacular caves of Dunhuang, China, through his Buddha Passion. This powerful piece was accompanied by a once-in-a-lifetime, 360-degree immersive experience in Benaroya Hall’s Octave 9: Raisbeck Music Center that showcased the caves. Ghost Opera, an earlier work by Tan Dun, was also featured in the Octave 9 concert series.

Further illustrating the power music has to connect us, in his Seattle debut, composer and cellist Abel Selaocoe invited audiences to add their voices to the orchestra during three transcendent performances of his groundbreaking work, Four Spirits

With so many memorable moments, the 2022/2023 season reminded us how irreplaceable the experience of live music is — there truly is nothing that compares!

The steadfast work of recovery continued throughout the season, resulting in both significant growth in ticket sales and the generous support of our donor family, allowing the Symphony to maintain our momentum. While a full recovery remains years away, the future of the orchestra is bright thanks to our caring community. Through your support, we continue to unleash the power of music, bring people together and lift the human spirit.

With thanks for all you do,

OUR MISSION: The Seattle Symphony unleashes the power of music, brings people together, and lifts the human spirit.

Financial Report

In the 2022/2023 season, the Seattle Symphony continued to see a healthy rebound in ticket sales with an increase of 48% over the previous fiscal year. Ticket sales went from $7.2M to $10.6M, while total earned revenue, including rental income, totaled $12.9M, an overall gain of 61% over the prior year.

Support from our generous donor family provided $17.3M in contributed revenue, up from $12.9M in the previous year. This 34% increase included a special bequest of $4.5M, which helped to mitigate the absence of $5.1M in federal Covid relief funding received in the 2021/2022 fiscal year.

Concerts and other program offerings continued to increase in the 2022/2023 season towards the Symphony’s goal of regaining pre-pandemic levels of audience attendance and community engagement. This increase in programming levels, coupled with inflation, resulted in additional investments into our programs, including our Education & Community Engagement programs and our support staff. We allocated $1.2M of our operating reserve for this year’s investment.

The Seattle Symphony Foundation endowment grew from $41.5M to $43.3M with gifts of $2.0M and $2.4M in dividends and investment appreciation. A 5% distribution was approved for the Seattle Symphony and Benaroya Hall, resulting in a $1.5M and $17K distribution respectively. Benaroya Hall Music Center’s net assets grew from $50.9M to $51.6M.

As audience numbers continue to rebound, the Seattle Symphony remains immensely grateful to the generous community of music lovers who sustain the orchestra for everyone to enjoy. Thank you for your support!
