Conductor and composer Tan Dun returns to Benaroya Hall on May 15 & 16, 2025, with his work Nu Shu: The Secret Songs of Women. Inspired by a closely guarded language passed from mother to daughter among the ethnic Yao women of China’s Hunan province, the work is accompanied by 13 short film clips documenting the Nu Shu language’s enigmatic traditions. These short
films were recorded by the composer himself during his travels to the province over the course of five years. Tan Dun also showcases the harp as a musical representation of the female voice.
