MESSAGE FROM
WHL COMMISSIONER Last year, during the Western Hockey League’s 50th season, we were privileged to reflect on our rich history and honour the many distinguished builders and alumni who have helped to make the WHL the finest junior hockey league in the world today. As we open the 2016-17 WHL season, the same ideals that fostered the growth our great League still serve as its foundation – a commitment to providing our players with a world class experience from both a hockey and education standpoint. The WHL and our 22 member Clubs take great pride in providing our players with the best possible environment in which to succeed both on and off the ice. On the ice, our high calibre of coaching and arena facilities continue to offer an ideal setting to grow and develop as a player. Off the ice, the WHL Scholarship remains the most comprehensive hockey scholarship in North America with a WHL record of over 350 graduates utilizing their WHL Scholarship at post-secondary institutions across the continent last year alone, representing an investment of over $2 million by WHL Club ownership.
Ron Robison Commissioner Western Hockey League
The WHL Scholarship is one of many commitments WHL Club ownership makes to ensure the success of our players. The WHL Players First support services program expanded last year with the addition of a League-wide WHL Security Network and Police Impact Program which engages local police officers in a liaison capacity with all of our teams to ensure our players are in a safe and respectful environment at all times. This year, the WHL has partnered with the Canadian Mental Health Association to launch the Talk Today program with all of our WHL member Clubs. Talk Today is a proven and important mental health initiative that will help our players and team staff identify and address mental health issues. The development opportunities the WHL provides on the ice and the assistance offered off the ice to our players through the WHL Scholarship and WHL Players First support services programs would not be possible without the support of our great fans as well as our corporate partners, broadcasters and media. The 2016-17 WHL season promises to be another highly entertaining campaign and we look forward to supporting our players and all of our WHL Clubs as they continue to set the standard for development both on and off the ice.

'WHL
The Western Hockey League started with just seven teams based in the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta in 1966. The WHL now has representation in all four Western Canadian provinces and the U.S. states of Oregon and Washington. The WHL now consists of 22 member Clubs with 17 based in Canadian markets and five in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. The WHL is a member of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) whose membership is comprised of three major junior hockey leagues: the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Western Hockey League (WHL). At the conclusion of each league's playoffs, the CHL hosts the MasterCard Memorial Cup, a national championship tournament involving each of the three league champions and the tournament host. The WHL is regarded as one of the finest development leagues in the world today. Each season the WHL is one of the top leagues from which players are selected from in the NHL Draft. Currently over 20% of all NHL players are graduates of the WHL. The WHL is also a leading provider of post-secondary scholarships with over 325 scholarships awarded each year to current and graduate WHL players, more than any other league in North America.
Welcome to Kent …and to the Western Conference Champion Seattle Thunderbirds 2016-2017 season as the T-Birds pursue a return to the WHL Championship! This season starts with an exciting celebration at the first home game of the season as the T-Birds will raise a U.S. Division Champions Banner and a Western Conference Champions Banner. Ethan Bear, Keegan Kolesar and Scott Eansor, leading scorers for the T-Birds last season, return this year as the T-Birds defend their Western Conference Championship. Also returning are Nolan Volcan, Donovan Neuls, Alexander True, Turner Ottenbreit and the hero of Game 4 of the Western Conference Championship, Matthew Wedman. Watch for new Finnish forward Sami Moilanen, who the T-Birds selected in the annual Import Draft, and center Elijah Brown, the 2015 first overall Bantam Draft pick, to do big things. Returning this year is the T-Birds’ popular 2-for-Tuesday promotion, where fans can enjoy 2-for-1 tickets along with $2 concession specials! The very popular Pub Nights, Turkey Shoot and Ham Shoot are always fun nights. If you’re a new visitor to ShoWare Center, you should know we are very proud of this 8 year-old state-ofthe-art arena. The 6,125 seats, 20 suites, and incredible Heritage Club seating section have unmatched hockey sightlines throughout. While you’re in town, grab a bite at Kent Station, a contemporary, open air urban village with a variety of options for pre and post-game gatherings, but don’t leave your car there during an event as they will be towed. Walk a couple blocks south of the Center to discover the charm of historic downtown Kent where even more entertainment and dining choices await you. Go Birds!

Lead after 1 6-3-0-1 nd Lead after 2 10-1-0-0 Spokane and Seattle are surely acquainted by now, as tonight will mark the seventh Tied after 1st 9-4-1-0 meeting between the two clubs this season and second of three this month; these two nd Tied after 2 6-3-1-1 will meet again in Spokane on Wednesday night. The teams have alternated wins and losses, which going by the pattern would mean the Chiefs are due for a victory as Down after 1st 3-12-4-1 nd Seattle came away with a 2-1 victory in the most recent tilt back on January 8 in Down after 2 2-15-4-1 Spokane. 1-goal games 8-7-5-2 2-goal games 3-5-0-0 Kailer Yamamoto leads all scorers in the season series by a wide margin; he has 4 goals 3-goal games 4-3-0-0 and 7 assists for 11 points in the 6 games, putting him 6 points ahead of the next closest players in Spokane’s Anderson-Dolan (3-2-5) and Hudson Elynuik (3-2-5) as well 4+-goal games 3-4-0-0 st as Seattle’s Scott Eansor (3-2-5), Ryan Gropp (2-3-5) and Ethan Bear (1-4-5). Overtime 3-5 Shootout 0-2 Goaltenders Dawson Weatherill (SPO) and Rylan Toth (SEA) have been spectacular in Red jerseys 8-8-3-0 the season series. Weatherill has posted a 2.22 GAA and .935 SV% in nearly 300 White jerseys 9-8-1-2 minutes over 5 appearances while Toth has put up an even more impressive 1.82 GAA and .943 SV% in almost identical minutes. Blue jerseys 1-3-1-0 Sundays 0-2-0-0 The Chiefs will have their hands full tonight as Seattle is on fire, winning their last four Tuesdays 4-2-0-0 games dating back to New Year’s Eve in Portland. They won a narrow 4-3 overtime Wednesdays 4-3-1-0 game at Everett last night as Keegan Kolesar potted the winner with just 16 seconds Thursdays 0-0-0-0 left in the 3-on-3 extra frame off assists from Bear and star forward Mathew Barzal. Fridays 6-4-2-0 Spokane had a relatively quiet trade deadline, trading away 19-year-old forwards Curtis Saturdays 4-8-2-2 Miske on Monday (to P.A.) and Tanner Wishnowski on Tuesday (to P.G.), keeping with the season’s theme of youth throughout the roster.
NOT BAD, JAD… Second-year forward Jaret Anderson-Dolan has turned up the heat over the last month with 12G and 8A over his last 16 games including 2G & 1A last night at Portland. Four of those goals coming on the PP. Anderson-Dolan has 5 multi-goal games this season after recording one last year. He was listed at 31st overall in ISS’s January rankings for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. NUIK WITH THE PUCK… Hudson Elynuik has been a catalyst for the Chiefs, with 8 goals and 15 assists over the last 21 games and 10 points (4G, 7A) over the last 10 as he has tied Kailer Yamamoto for the team lead in assists. Elynuik has recorded 11 multi-point games, including two 4-point games (Oct. 1 & Jan. 6) and a 5-point game (Nov. 25). He has 4 multi-goal games. TAKE NOTICE… Kailer Yamamoto has been on a torrid pace during his draft year. The third-year forward has 57 points (26G, 31A) in 38 GP so far this season, good for 9th on the WHL’s points list. He piled up 5G & 13A on a 9-game point streak snapped on NYE after another 9-game streak earlier this season. He has 18 multi-point games, including six 3-point games and one 4-point (1G & 3A vs SEA on 12/28). The Chiefs are 13-4-3-0 when Yamamoto scores a goal. He was named to the 2017 CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Quebec and will play for Team Orr. Yamamoto earned WHL Player of the Week honors on Oct. 31. He has been blanked from the stat sheet just seven times (once leaving early with injury). With a late birthday, he will first become eligible for the NHL Entry Draft in 2017. A Spokane native, he impressed in stints at international tournaments w/ Team USA (Five Nations, U-18, U-20 NJEC) and produced 128 points (42G, 86A) in his first 2 seasons with the Chiefs (125 GP). Multiple news outlets project Yamamoto as a future 1st round pick, including Sportsnet’s January rankings with him at 22nd overall. NO TIME TO WAIT… Defenseman Ty Smith, the 1st overall pick in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft, has already found himself playing top minutes and quarterbacking the Chiefs’ power play. The Lloydminster product ranks t-1th in the WHL among rookies (1 point behind fellow Chief Ondrej Najman) with 18 points. He is 4th among 16-year-olds. SHAKE IT UP… On Dec. 14, the Chiefs completed a trade with the Saskatoon Blades that brought 19-year-old forward Wyatt Sloboshan and 18-year-old defenseman Nolan Reid to the Lilac City while sending overage forward Markson Bechtold and 19-yearold defenseman Evan Fiala to the Blades. Spokane also acquired a 3rd round pick in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft. On January 2, the Chiefs flipped Sloboshan and the 3rd round pick to Regina for wingers Rykr Cole (97) and Riley Woods (98) while shipping LW Curtis Miske (97) to Prince Albert for a 2018 4th round pick. Woods scored the OT winner vs. Kelowna in his 1st game as a Chief on Jan. 4. PAVEL PARTY… Forward Pavel Kousal was selected by the Czech Ice Hockey Association to represent the Czech Republic in the 2016 World Junior A Challenge from Dec. 11-17 in Bonnyville, Alberta. He scored 1G & 1A in 5 games as the Czechs earned a 4th place finish, losing to Russia in the Bronze Medal game. VETERAN ADDITION… On Dec. 27, the Chiefs added 20-year-old Alex Mowbray. The 5-foot-11 forward previously played 177 games with the Medicine Hat Tigers, including a 22-point (11G, 11A) campaign last season. This year, he was playing for the Camrose Kodiaks (AJHL), where he had 20 points (10G, 10A) and 73 PIM in 32 games. MAKE THEM COUNT… Spokane has actually fared better with fewer shots as they are 10-6-0-0 when putting fewer than 30 shots on goal, but only 8-13-5-1 when they get 30+ pucks through to the opposing goaltender. They put a season-high 52 shots on goal against Seattle on Dec. 28 in a 5-4 OT win. SEND THE HATS FLYING… On Nov. 25 vs. Vancouver, teammates Hudson Elynuik and Jaret Anderson-Dolan each recorded a hat trick. It was Spokane’s first multiple hat trick game since the 2013-14 season, when Mitch Holmberg and Dominic Zwerger each tallied 3 goals against Kamloops (Feb. 23, 2014; 9-4 W). Anderson-Dolan added his second of the year on Dec. 7 vs. VIC. BIG BROTHER… The older of the Yamamoto brothers, Keanu, has picked up 24 assists in 44 games including a team-leading 13 power play helpers and a 6-assist game on Nov. 25 vs. Vancouver, which tied for the 2nd-most assists in one game in franchise history. He broke a career-high 14-game point streak (8G-12A) on Dec. 27, including 4-game goal streak ending on Dec. 7. Keanu is the elder statesman on this year’s Chiefs’ squad with 243 games played. The Yamamoto brothers have been left off the stat sheet just three times this season, with at least one of the two recording a point in 41 of 44 games. THEY’RE WATCHING… The Chiefs had five forwards named to the NHL Central Scouting’s preliminary “Players to Watch” list, as announced on Oct. 4 with goaltender Dawson Weatherill joining the same five in their updated November list. Kailer Yamamoto earned an “A” rating, indicating a potential first-round pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. Jaret Anderson-Dolan got a “B” (2nd-3rd) while four players – Ethan McIndoe, Pavel Kousal, Jake McGrew, and Weatherill – earned “C” scores. BLACK & WHITE… Three Chiefs – D Ty Smith, F Koby Morrisseau and F Eli Zummack – were named by Hockey Canada to the 2016 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Ontario (Oct. 27 – Nov. 5). Smith and Zummack competed for Team Canada Black while Morrisseau is on Team White. Smith was also honored as team captain for Canada Black and tallied two goals in Black’s 4-3 win over Team USA to clinch their group. Black went on to earn silver as Smith and Zummack partnered up for their only goal in a 2-1 loss to Sweden. Morrisseau and Canada White fell in the bronze medal game to Russia. CLEAN SHEET… The Chiefs set a franchise record unlikely to be broken on Saturday, Nov. 12 vs. Everett as they incurred zero penalty minutes. The previous record (2) had been reached twice previously.

Entering the season, his .552 winning percentage with Spokane ranked 2nd behind Hardy Sauter (.629). Nachbaur is one of four WHL coaches with 600+ career wins (683).
