WHL COMMISSIONER Last year, during the Western Hockey League’s 50th season, we were privileged to reflect on our rich history and honour the many distinguished builders and alumni who have helped to make the WHL the finest junior hockey league in the world today. As we open the 2016-17 WHL season, the same ideals that fostered the growth our great League still serve as its foundation – a commitment to providing our players with a world class experience from both a hockey and education standpoint. The WHL and our 22 member Clubs take great pride in providing our players with the best possible environment in which to succeed both on and off the ice. On the ice, our high calibre of coaching and arena facilities continue to offer an ideal setting to grow and develop as a player. Off the ice, the WHL Scholarship remains the most comprehensive hockey scholarship in North America with a WHL record of over 350 graduates utilizing their WHL Scholarship at post-secondary institutions across the continent last year alone, representing an investment of over $2 million by WHL Club ownership.

The WHL Scholarship is one of many commitments WHL Club ownership makes to ensure the success of our players. The WHL Players First support services program expanded last year with the addition of a League-wide WHL Security Network and Police Impact Program which engages local police officers in a liaison capacity with all of our teams to ensure our players are in a safe and respectful environment at all times. This year, the WHL has partnered with the Canadian Mental Health Association to launch the Talk Today program with all of our WHL member Clubs. Talk Today is a proven and important mental health initiative that will help our players and team staff identify and address mental health issues. The development opportunities the WHL provides on the ice and the assistance offered off the ice to our players through the WHL Scholarship and WHL Players First support services programs would not be possible without the support of our great fans as well as our corporate partners, broadcasters and media. The 2016-17 WHL season promises to be another highly entertaining campaign and we look forward to supporting our players and all of our WHL Clubs as they continue to set the standard for development both on and off the ice.

The Western Hockey League started with just seven teams based in the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta in 1966. The WHL now has representation in all four Western Canadian provinces and the U.S. states of Oregon and Washington. The WHL now consists of 22 member Clubs with 17 based in Canadian markets and five in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. The WHL is a member of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) whose membership is comprised of three major junior hockey leagues: the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Western Hockey League (WHL). At the conclusion of each league's playoffs, the CHL hosts the MasterCard Memorial Cup, a national championship tournament involving each of the three league champions and the tournament host. The WHL is regarded as one of the finest development leagues in the world today. Each season the WHL is one of the top leagues from which players are selected from in the NHL Draft. Currently over 20% of all NHL players are graduates of the WHL. The WHL is also a leading provider of post-secondary scholarships with over 325 scholarships awarded each year to current and graduate WHL players, more than any other league in North America.
Welcome to Kent …and to the Western Conference Champion Seattle Thunderbirds 2016-2017 season as the T-Birds pursue a return to the WHL Championship! This season starts with an exciting celebration at the first home game of the season as the T-Birds will raise a U.S. Division Champions Banner and a Western Conference Champions Banner. Ethan Bear, Keegan Kolesar and Scott Eansor, leading scorers for the T-Birds last season, return this year as the T-Birds defend their Western Conference Championship. Also returning are Nolan Volcan, Donovan Neuls, Alexander True, Turner Ottenbreit and the hero of Game 4 of the Western Conference Championship, Matthew Wedman. Watch for new Finnish forward Sami Moilanen, who the T-Birds selected in the annual Import Draft, and center Elijah Brown, the 2015 first overall Bantam Draft pick, to do big things. Returning this year is the T-Birds’ popular 2-for-Tuesday promotion, where fans can enjoy 2-for-1 tickets along with $2 concession specials! The very popular Pub Nights, Turkey Shoot and Ham Shoot are always fun nights. If you’re a new visitor to ShoWare Center, you should know we are very proud of this 8 year-old state-ofthe-art arena. The 6,125 seats, 20 suites, and incredible Heritage Club seating section have unmatched hockey sightlines throughout. While you’re in town, grab a bite at Kent Station, a contemporary, open air urban village with a variety of options for pre and post-game gatherings, but don’t leave your car there during an event as they will be towed. Walk a couple blocks south of the Center to discover the charm of historic downtown Kent where even more entertainment and dining choices await you. Go Birds!

Last Game…The T-Birds defeated the Spokane Chiefs 6-4 Sunday at ShoWare Center. Austin Strand, Jarret Tyszka, Sami Moilanen, Ethan Bear, Ryan Gropp and Alexander True had goals in the win. Rylan Toth made 29 saves to get the win. Kailer Yamamoto had two goals and Hayden Ostir and Ondrej Najman each had a goal. Jayden Sittler had 24 saves. Five In A Row…The T-Birds have a five-game win streak with victories over the Portland Winterhawks (3-2 on December 31), Everett Silvertips (4-3 in a shootout January 6), Spokane Chiefs (2-1 on January 8), Silvertips (4-3 in overtime January 14) and the Chiefs (6-4 January 15). Back and Forth Against Spokane and Everett…The T-Birds are in middle of seven games against the Spokane Chief and Everett Silvertips. Barzal 3rd in Career Assists…Mathew Barzal is in third place in T-Birds history in career assists with 166. Glen Goodall (290) and Victor Gervais (237) are in first and second place in team history in career assists. He passed Lindsay Vallis (158) December 2 against Kootenay with three assists in a 4-3 overtime win. Barzal passed Dustin Johner (152) and Chris Wells (152) November 25 in Kennewick when he had three assists in 5-2 win over Tri-City. Barzal passed Shea Theodore (154) in the game against Victoria on November 26. He passed Tyler Metcalfe in fourth place with 156 career assists against Kamloops November 30 when he had one assist. Career High For Ottenbreit…Defenseman Turner Ottenbreit set a career high for points Sunday when he had an assist against Spokane. Ottenbreit has three goals and 14 assists for 17 points, one more point than he had last season. This is a new career high in assists and points for the defenseman. Ottenbreit had five goals and 11 assists in the 2015-16 season. Eansor Tops Scoring…Captain Scott Eansor leads the team in scoring with 37 points on 18 goals and 19 assists in 38 games. Eansor has 10 goals and nine assists in the last 20 games. Eansor has passed his goal total of 14 from last season, which was a career high. He needs three more goals to register 50 career goals. Eansor had the T-Birds first hat trick of the season when he scored three goals at Moose Jaw in a 5-1 win on November 5. Eansor has scored two shorthanded goals this season. Bear From The Blue Line…Ethan Bear has three goals and eight assists in the last 10 games. He is second on the team in scoring with 13 goals and 23 assists for 36 points. He had a five-game goal streak come to an end in the loss
against Kelowna on December 7. This five-game goal streak tied him with Scott Eansor for the longest goal streak of the season by a T-Bird. Nifty Nolan…Nolan Volcan had a team high four assists against the Prince George Cougars on December 10 in Prince George. This is the most assists by a T-Bird in a game this season. Volcan is third on the team in scoring with 13 goals and 21 assists for 34 points in 41 games. Volcan has five goals and 13 assists in the last 21 games. Volcan has 88 career points on 38 goals and 50 assists. Sami Fourth…Sami Moilanen has 13 goals and 16 assists for 29 points in 39 games to put him in fourth on the team in scoring. He has nine goals and eight assists in the last 19 games. Gropp Going…Ryan Gropp has eight goals and eight assists for 16 points in the last 19 games. He had a team high nine-game point streak snapped in the 4-3 win over Lethbridge on November 18. Ryan Gropp has 93 goals in his T-Birds career putting him in 15th place all time in goals scored by a T-Bird. Greg Scott is 10th on the list with 96 goals and Aaron Gagnon is fifth on the list with 123 goals. Seven Up…The seven goals scored by the T-Birds in the 7-1 win over Medicine Hat on December 3 were the most goals scored by the T-Birds this season. They had three goals in the first and second periods and one goal in the third period. Four Over 200 GPs…Four T-Birds have played over 200 games with the T-Birds. They are Ethan Bear (236), Ryan Gropp (227), Scott Eansor (217) and Keegan Kolesar (211). Fastest Goal To Start…The goal by Nolan Volcan 43 seconds into the game against the Tri-City Americans November 25 is the fastest goal by a T-Bird to start a game this season. The T-Birds won the game 5-2. NHL Central Scouting Rankings…Three T-Birds were listed on the November watch list. They are defenseman Jarret Tyszka, right wing Sami Moilanen and center Matthew Wedman. Each of the three were given a letter ranking that indicates where NHL Central Scouting thinks they could be drafted in 2017. Tyszka received a “B” ranking which means he is a second or third round draft candidate. Moilanen and Wedman received “C” rankings which means they are fourth through sixth round draft candidates. 2 in 17… The first two goals, by Nolan Volcan at 4:26 and Ryan Gropp at 4:43, in the third period at Prince Albert Wednesday, November 2, were scored in 17 seconds which is the fastest two goals scored by the T-Birds this season. 3 in 40…The first three goals, by Nolan Volcan at 4:26, Ryan Gropp at 4:43 and Dillon Hamaliuk at 5:06, at Prince Albert Wednesday, November 2, were scored in 40 seconds which is the fastest three goals scored by the T-Birds this season. High Shots…The T-Birds put up a season high 55 shots on goal against Kamloops on November 30 in Kamloops in a 4-3 overtime loss. They had 18 shots in the first period, 20 shots in the second period and 17 shots in the third period. The TBirds had 46 shots at Portland on November 19. They had seven shots in the first period, 25 in the second period and 14 in the third period. The 25 shots in the second period was season high for most shots in a period. The T-Birds had 45 shots on October 11 against Spokane. Barzal Wins Silver Medal With Team Canada…Center Mathew Barzal won a silver medal with Team Canada at the just competed World Junior Championship. The United States defeated Canada 5-4 in a shootout. Barzal played seven games and had three goals and five assists and finished tied for eight in scoring at the tournament. Barzal was an Alternate Captain for Team Canada. True Plays For Team Denmark at World Junior Championship…Center Alexander True was the captain of Team Denmark at the 2017 World Junior Championship. He had one goal and two assists in five games for Denmark.
