MESSAGE FROM

WHL COMMISSIONER From humble beginnings as a fledgling seven-team league on the Western Canadian prairies in 1966 to the largest junior hockey league of its kind in the world today, no one would have envisioned the growth the Western Hockey League has experienced over the last 50 years. The WHL has certainly come a long way and this is in large part due to the commitment WHL Club ownership has made in setting the standard for player development on a worldwide basis. The WHL and our 22 member Clubs take great pride in providing an ideal environment for the top prospects in the system to reach their potential both on and off the ice. From our world class coaching and arena facilities, to our comprehensive player safety and professional development initiatives and our fully guaranteed player education and scholarship program, the WHL is a leader in every category. As we celebrate our 50th season, we not only salute our founders – Scotty Munro, Bill Hunter, Del Wilson and Jim Piggott – but also our owners and community leaders who, together with long-time WHL President Ed Chynoweth, have been instrumental in the establishment and growth of our League. We also want to pay tribute to the players, coaches, managers and staff, along with the officials, who over the past 50 years have made this League what it is today. None of this would be possible without the ongoing support of our fans, sponsors, broadcasters and media from throughout

Ron Robison Commissioner Western Hockey League

the League. Without your loyal support, WHL Clubs would not be in a position to continue offering our players the world class experience they deserve. We trust you will join us in celebrating the WHL’s 50th Season as we prepare to host a series of special events throughout the 2015-16 season including the Canada – Russia Series in November in Kelowna and Kamloops, the CHL / NHL Top Prospects Game in January in Vancouver and the MasterCard Memorial Cup in May in Red Deer.

'WHL

The Western Hockey League started with just seven teams based in the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta in 1966. The WHL now has representation in all four Western Canadian provinces and the U.S. states of Oregon and Washington. The WHL now consists of 22 member Clubs with 17 based in Canadian markets and five in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. The WHL is a member of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) whose membership is comprised of three major junior hockey leagues: the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Western Hockey League (WHL). At the conclusion of each league's playoffs, the CHL hosts the MasterCard Memorial Cup, a national championship tournament involving each of the three league champions and the tournament host. The WHL is regarded as one of the finest development leagues in the world today. Each season the WHL is one of the top leagues from which players are selected from in the NHL Draft. Currently over 20% of all NHL players are graduates of the WHL. The WHL is also a leading provider of post-secondary scholarships with over 325 scholarships awarded each year to current and graduate WHL players, more than any other league in North America.

Welcome to Kent …and to Seattle Thunderbirds hockey and a winning 2015-2016 season as the T-Birds pursue the coveted “Memorial Cup”! This is surely going to be another exciting season at ShoWare Center! Four T-Birds were selected this summer in the NHL Draft; Mathew Barzal (New York Islanders), Ryan Gropp (New York Rangers), Ethan Bear (Edmonton Oilers) and Keegan Kolesar (Columbus Blue Jackets)… all top NHL prospects playing for the T-Birds this season. Third year center Scott Eansor just took part in the Team USA World Junior Championship Development Camp and will be a player to watch this season. The T-Birds return five defensemen this season from their stalwart defensive corps last season. Donovan Neuls, Nolan Volcan, Alexander True and Kaden Elder, all rookies last season, are going to be important T-Birds in their second season. Returning this year is the T-Birds’ popular 2-for-Tuesday promotion, where fans can enjoy 2-for-1 tickets along with $2 concession specials! If you’re a new visitor to ShoWare Center, you should know we are very proud of this 6 year-old state-ofthe-art arena. The 6,125 seats, twenty suites, and incredible club seating section have unmatched hockey sightlines throughout. While you’re in town, grab a bite at Kent Station, a contemporary, open air urban village with a variety of options for pre and post-game gatherings, but don’t leave your car there during an event as they will be towed. Walk a couple blocks south of the Center to discover the charm of historic downtown Kent where even more entertainment and dining choices await you

Go T-Birds!
