WHL COMMISSIONER Calgary, Alta. – As we get set for another Western Hockey League season, there is no shortage of excitement as we eagerly await the opportunity to once again watch the world’s premier junior hockey players in action in each of our 22 markets across Western Canada and the U.S. Pacific Northwest.

In this the 52nd season of the WHL, our Clubs remain truly committed to providing our players with the highest standard of development, both on and off the ice. We are proud to continue offering our players exactly that, from world-class coaching and management, to a comprehensive WHL Scholarship and education program to a series of Players First support services designed to ensure they develop in a highly positive environment. \ Having awarded a WHL record 374 post-secondary scholarships to WHL graduates this past season, the WHL Scholarship each year provides players with an unparalleled opportunity to pursue their academic endeavours. Of the 374 WHL Graduates to access their WHL Scholarship last season, 185 furthered their hockey careers by playing Canadian University hockey at the U SPORTS level. We anticipate the number of players receiving WHL Scholarships will continue to grow as our graduates take advantage of the WHL Scholarship benefits. On the ice, the 2017-18 season will undoubtedly be one worth remembering, with Regina set to celebrate its centennial season and getting ready to host the 100th edition of the Mastercard Memorial Cup in May. The province of Saskatchewan will also take centre stage in November when Moose Jaw and Swift Current play host to the 2017 CIBC Canada – Russia Series. Without the support of our loyal fans, our corporate partners, broadcasters and media, none of this would be possible. Your ongoing support and dedication to the WHL and our 22 Member Clubs is greatly appreciated. The 2017-18 WHL season promises to be highly entertaining from start to finish. I am sure you will enjoy cheering on your favourite WHL Club as well as watching these top prospects continue their development, both on and off the ice.

The Western Hockey League started with just seven teams based in the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta in 1966. Today, the WHL has representation in all four Western Canadian provinces and the U.S. states of Oregon and Washington. The WHL now consists of 22 member Clubs with 17 based in Canadian markets and five in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. The WHL is a member of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) whose membership is comprised of three major junior hockey leagues: Ontatio Hockey League (OHL), Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Western Hockey League (WHL). At the conclusion of each League’s playoffs, the CHL hosts the Mastercard Memorial Cup, a national championship tournament involving each of the three Leagues’ Champions and the tournament host. The WHL is regarded as one of the finest development Leagues in the world today. Each season, the WHL is one of the top Leagues from which players are selected from in the NHL Draft. Currently, 20% of all NHL players are graduates of the WHL. The WHL is also a leading provider of post-secondary scholarships with over 400 scholarships awarded each year to current and graduate WHL players, more than any other League in North America.
Welcome to Kent …and to the Western Hockey League Champion Seattle Thunderbirds 2017- 18 season as the T-Birds defend their WHL Championship! The season commences with a thrilling celebration at ShoWareCenter as the T-Birds will celebrate theirhistoric 2016-2017 season by raising the Western Conference Champion and Western Hockey League Champion banners. This will be an exciting season under the direction of former assistant coach and now head coach, Matt O’Dette. There will be several new faces but also many key returners. Jarret Tyszka was selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2017 NHL Draft. Three other players from last year’s Championship team attended NHL Development Camps this summer: Nolan Volcan (Pittsburgh Penguins), Turner Ottenbreit (Anaheim Ducks) and Sami Moilanen (Colorado Avalanche). Carl Stankowski, who backstopped the T-Birds to their first WHL Championship in franchise history, will be back in net this season. Watch out for some rookies to have an impact this season, including new Russian forward Nikita Malukhin and last year’s first overall Bantam Pick defenseman Jake Lee. Returning this year is the T-Birds’ popular 2-for-Tuesday promotion, where fans can enjoy two-for-one tickets and beer along with $2 concession specials. Pub Nights, Turkey Shoot and Ham Shoot are great games to make it out to. You also won’t want to miss the first annual Weiner Dog Races this season. If you’re a new visitor to ShoWare Center, you should know we are immensely proud of this 9-year-old state-of-the-art arena. The 6,125 seats, 20 suites and astonishing Heritage Club seating have unsurpassed hockey sightlines throughout. While you’re in town, grab a bite at Kent Station, a contemporary, open-air urban village with a variety of options for pre and postgame gatherings, but don’t leave your car there during an event as it will be towed. Walk a couple blocks south of the Center to discover the charm of historic downtown Kent, where even more entertainment and dining choices are calling your name.

Previous Game…The Portland Winterhawks defeated the T-Birds 3-2 in a shootout on Tuesday at accesso ShoWare Center. Sami Moilanen and Reece Harsch scored in regulation for the T-Birds. Liam Hughes had 26 saves. Skyler McKenzie and Alex Overhardt scored for the Winterhawks. Portland’s Ryan Hughes was the only shooter to convert in the shootout. Portland goalie Cole Kehler stopped Zack Andrusiak, Noah Philp and Moilanen in the shootout and finished with 33 saves. Vs. Kelowna…This is the second game of the season against Kelowna. The T-Birds defeated the Rockets 6-4 on January 5 in Kelowna. The T-Bird and Rockets play four times this season, with three of the games on consecutive Fridays. The two teams meet next on January 19 at accesso ShoWare Center and then the T-Birds are back in Kelowna on February 23. Winning Ways…The T-Birds had a five-game win streak snapped in the shootout loss to Portland. They have points in their last nine games with a 7-0-1-1 record. The T-Birds have outscored opponents 46-29 in the last nine games. T-Birds Acquire Jaxan Kaluski…Seattle Thunderbirds general manager Russ Farwell announced Wednesday the team acquired left wing Jaxan Kaluski from the Moose Jaw Warriors in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2019 Bantam Draft. Kaluski, a rookie from Lloydminster, Alberta, has two goals and one assist in 22 games with the Warriors. He will wear #17. T-Birds Acquire Owen Williams…Seattle Thunderbirds general manager Russ Farwell announced Wednesday the team acquired defenseman Owen Williams and a second-round pick in the 2019 Bantam Draft from the Regina Pats in exchange for defenseman Aaron Hyman. Williams, a rookie from Delta, British Columbia, has appeared in 28 games with the Pats this season and has one assist. Williams is a left-shot defenseman who is a 2000 birth year and will wear #25. T-Birds Trade Matt Berlin…Seattle Thunderbirds general manager Russ Farwell announced Monday the team traded goalie Matt Berlin to the Kootenay Ice in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2018 Bantam Draft. Berlin has a 12-7-2-1 record in 24 games this season. He has a goals against average of 3.40 and a save percentage of .893 with one shutout. Berlin was acquired from the Spokane Chiefs last season and had a 7-2-2-0 record with a 2.82 goals against average and a .902 save percentage as the T-Birds won the 2017 WHL Championship. T-Birds Trade Elijah Brown…Seattle Thunderbirds general manger Russ Farwell announced Tuesday the team traded center Elijah Brown to the Medicine Hat Tigers for a second-round pick in the 2018 Bantam Draft and a conditional third round pick in the 2019 Bantam Draft. This season Brown had one goal and four assists in 13 games. He played 64 games in the 2016-17 season and had four goals and nine assists for 13 points. Brown was the T-Birds first round pick, 15th overall, in the 2015 Bantam Draft. Streaking Birds…Reece Harsch has a four-game point streak with two goals and two assists in the last four games…Donovan Neuls has a four-game point streak with four goals and five assists in the last four games…Zack Andrusiak has a three-game assist streak with five assists in the last three games 11 With 20 Or More…11 T-Birds have 20 or more points this season. Fastest Goal…Donovan Neuls scored 20 seconds into the game against the Spokane Chiefs on December 17 which is the fastest goal to start the season for the T-Birds. First Points…Nikita Malukhin scored the first two goals of his career in the 10-3 win over Spokane on December 17. He scored at 14:50 of the second and 19:58 of the third. Holden Katzalay, Mike MacLean and Samuel Huo all had an assist in the 10-3 win over Spokane on December 17. This was the first point of the season for all three. Mike MacLean Added To Roster…Right wing Mike MacLean made his T-Bird debut in the win over Prince George on December 15. He has played in eight games this season and has one assist. MacLean, from Penticton, British Columbia, is an affiliate player who has been playing the with the Lloydminster Bobcats in the AJHL this season. He has played 23 games and has three goals and three assists for six points with 106 penalty minutes. MacLean was born in 1998 and played last season for the Summerland Steam in the KIJHL and had six goals and nine assists for 15 points with 187 penalty minutes in 36 games.

Rockets @ T-Birds Friday January 12, 2018 Game Time – 7:35 pm Game Night Preview: The Kelowna Rockets open a mini two game road trip tonight against the Seattle Thunderbirds. This is the first visit to the ShoWare Center since last season’s Western Conference championship series, where in game five, the T-Birds earned a 5-3 win. In that game, the Rockets out-shot the T-Birds 40-24, yet Seattle struck for three power play goals. In their most recent meeting, a week ago at Prospera Place, the T-Birds scored two-third period goals in a 6-4 win. Leif Mattson, Gordie Ballhorn, Kyle Topping and Carsen Twarynski scored in the loss, snapping the Rockets 13 game home ice winning streak. How crazy is this? These two teams battled last Friday, now tonight and meet again next Friday, again here at ShoWare Center. The seasonal series ends February 23rd at Prospera Place. The Rockets are coming off a 7-4 win over the Spokane Chiefs Wednesday night. Kyle Topping scored twice in the win while Carsen Twarynski had three assists.
