WHL COMMISSIONER Calgary, Alta. – As we get set for another Western Hockey League season, there is no shortage of excitement as we eagerly await the opportunity to once again watch the world’s premier junior hockey players in action in each of our 22 markets across Western Canada and the U.S. Pacific Northwest.

In this the 52nd season of the WHL, our Clubs remain truly committed to providing our players with the highest standard of development, both on and off the ice. We are proud to continue offering our players exactly that, from world-class coaching and management, to a comprehensive WHL Scholarship and education program to a series of Players First support services designed to ensure they develop in a highly positive environment. \ Having awarded a WHL record 374 post-secondary scholarships to WHL graduates this past season, the WHL Scholarship each year provides players with an unparalleled opportunity to pursue their academic endeavours. Of the 374 WHL Graduates to access their WHL Scholarship last season, 185 furthered their hockey careers by playing Canadian University hockey at the U SPORTS level. We anticipate the number of players receiving WHL Scholarships will continue to grow as our graduates take advantage of the WHL Scholarship benefits. On the ice, the 2017-18 season will undoubtedly be one worth remembering, with Regina set to celebrate its centennial season and getting ready to host the 100th edition of the Mastercard Memorial Cup in May. The province of Saskatchewan will also take centre stage in November when Moose Jaw and Swift Current play host to the 2017 CIBC Canada – Russia Series. Without the support of our loyal fans, our corporate partners, broadcasters and media, none of this would be possible. Your ongoing support and dedication to the WHL and our 22 Member Clubs is greatly appreciated. The 2017-18 WHL season promises to be highly entertaining from start to finish. I am sure you will enjoy cheering on your favourite WHL Club as well as watching these top prospects continue their development, both on and off the ice.

The Western Hockey League started with just seven teams based in the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta in 1966. Today, the WHL has representation in all four Western Canadian provinces and the U.S. states of Oregon and Washington. The WHL now consists of 22 member Clubs with 17 based in Canadian markets and five in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. The WHL is a member of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) whose membership is comprised of three major junior hockey leagues: Ontatio Hockey League (OHL), Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Western Hockey League (WHL). At the conclusion of each League’s playoffs, the CHL hosts the Mastercard Memorial Cup, a national championship tournament involving each of the three Leagues’ Champions and the tournament host. The WHL is regarded as one of the finest development Leagues in the world today. Each season, the WHL is one of the top Leagues from which players are selected from in the NHL Draft. Currently, 20% of all NHL players are graduates of the WHL. The WHL is also a leading provider of post-secondary scholarships with over 400 scholarships awarded each year to current and graduate WHL players, more than any other League in North America.
Welcome to Kent …and to the Western Hockey League Champion Seattle Thunderbirds 2017- 18 season as the T-Birds defend their WHL Championship! The season commences with a thrilling celebration at ShoWareCenter as the T-Birds will celebrate theirhistoric 2016-2017 season by raising the Western Conference Champion and Western Hockey League Champion banners. This will be an exciting season under the direction of former assistant coach and now head coach, Matt O’Dette. There will be several new faces but also many key returners. Jarret Tyszka was selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2017 NHL Draft. Three other players from last year’s Championship team attended NHL Development Camps this summer: Nolan Volcan (Pittsburgh Penguins), Turner Ottenbreit (Anaheim Ducks) and Sami Moilanen (Colorado Avalanche). Carl Stankowski, who backstopped the T-Birds to their first WHL Championship in franchise history, will be back in net this season. Watch out for some rookies to have an impact this season, including new Russian forward Nikita Malukhin and last year’s first overall Bantam Pick defenseman Jake Lee. Returning this year is the T-Birds’ popular 2-for-Tuesday promotion, where fans can enjoy two-for-one tickets and beer along with $2 concession specials. Pub Nights, Turkey Shoot and Ham Shoot are great games to make it out to. You also won’t want to miss the first annual Weiner Dog Races this season. If you’re a new visitor to ShoWare Center, you should know we are immensely proud of this 9-year-old state-of-the-art arena. The 6,125 seats, 20 suites and astonishing Heritage Club seating have unsurpassed hockey sightlines throughout. While you’re in town, grab a bite at Kent Station, a contemporary, open-air urban village with a variety of options for pre and postgame gatherings, but don’t leave your car there during an event as it will be towed. Walk a couple blocks south of the Center to discover the charm of historic downtown Kent, where even more entertainment and dining choices are calling your name.

Berlin has a 12-7-2-1 record in 24 games this season. He has a goals against average of 3.40 and a save percentage of .893 with one shutout. Berlin was acquired from the Spokane Chiefs last season and had a 7-2-2-0 record with a 2.82 goals against average and a .902 save percentage as the T-Birds won the 2017 WHL Championship. T-Birds Trade Elijah Brown…Seattle Thunderbirds general manger Russ Farwell today announced the team has traded center Elijah Brown to the Medicine Hat Tigers for a second-round pick in the 2018 Bantam Draft and a conditional third round pick in the 2019 Bantam Draft. This season Brown had one goal and four assists in 13 games. He played 64 games in the 2016-17 season and had four goals and nine assists for 13 points. Brown was the T-Birds first round pick, 15th overall, in the 2015 Bantam Draft. Streaking Birds…Matthew Wedman has a eight-game point streak of four goals and nine assists. Mike MacLean Added To Roster…Right wing Mike MacLean made his T-Bird debut in the win over Prince George on December 15. He has played in eight games this season and has one assist. MacLean, from Penticton, British Columbia, is an affiliate player who has been playing the with the Lloydminster Bobcats in the AJHL this season. He has played 23 games and has three goals and three assists for six points with 106 penalty minutes. MacLean was born in 1998 and played last season for the Summerland Steam in the KIJHL and had six goals and nine assists for 15 points with 187 penalty minutes in 36 games. PORTLAND WINTERHAWKS GAME NOTES WINTERHAWKS (23-13-1-2) at SEATTLE (20-14-4-1) JANUARY 9th, 2018 LAST GAME: PORTLAND 4 at EVERETT 3: Jake Gricius picked up his second goal of the night with just 38 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Winterhawks a 4-3 win over Everett. The Hawks got on the board first with a goal from Jake Gricius, with Mason Mannek picking up the assists. Ryan Hughes would then put the Hawks up 2-0 just 17 seconds later and Portland would take that lead into the intermission. Just 1:39 into the 2nd period, Ilijah Colina potted his third of the season to give Portland a 3-0 advantage. Everett would respond though, scoring twice on the power play to make it a 3-2 game after 40. In the third, Everett would tie things up, again on the man-advantage to make it a 3-3 contest. After Cody Glass struck iron on a shorthanded breakaway, the game remaining tied in the closing minutes. With just 38 seconds remaining, Jake Gricius scored while lying on the ice after being knocked down to give Portland the 4-3 lead. PORTLAND WINTERHAWKS GAME NOTES HAWKS NEWS WINTERHAWKS ACQUIRE LUKUS MACKENZIE FROM RED DEER: The Portland Winterhawks have acquired forward Lukus MacKenzie from the Red Deer Rebels in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft. MacKenzie is a 99-born forward from Calgary who has split his season between the Rebels and the Saskatoon Blades. In 30 total games this year, the 6’1” forward has registered eight points and 44 penalty minutes. Over his WHL career, MacKenzie has played in 138 games with Red Deer and Saskatoon and has eight goals, 28 points and 163 PIMS. MacKenzie was originally selected in the third-round, 60th overall by the Saskatoon Blades in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft. BELLOWS WINS BRONZE WITH TEAM USA AT WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP: Portland Winterhawks forward Kieffer Bellows’ incredible World Junior Championship was capped off with a twogoal performance in the United States’ 9-3 bronze medal win over the Czech Republic on Friday in Buffalo, NY. Bellows ended up with nine goals in the tournament, breaking former NHL’er Jeremy Roenick’s 1989 World Junior record for the most goals in a tournament by an American. Both of Bellows’ goals in the bronze medal game came in the 2nd period and helped open up a massive 7-0 lead for the U.S. after 40 minutes. In the third, Bellows would add an assist to extend his tournament points total to 10. Bellows’ nine goals would lead all players in tournament. The bronze was his second career medal at the World Junior Championship, as he won a gold medal last year. JOKIHARJU AND BLICHFELD WITH STRONG WJC FOR FINLAND AND DENMARK: Winterhawks defenseman Henri Jokiharju finished his tournament tied for the lead among Finnish D-men in points with four. Jokiharju was named Player of the Game in Team Finland’s 4-1 win over Denmark. In that game, he had a goal, an assist, six shots and played a game-high 23:54 minutes. Jokiharju and Team Finland were eliminated from World Junior contention in the quarterfinals to the Czech Republic. Meanwhile, Joachim Blichfeld led Denmark in goals with four in six games. He was named Player of the Game in Denmark’s loss to the Slovakia where he picked up the lone Danish goal. Blichfeld scored twice in Denmark’s 5-4 win over Belarus in Game One of the relegation round and then again in Denmark’s second win over Belarus. JOACHIM BLICHFELD SIGNS ENTRY-LEVEL CONTRACT WITH SAN JOSE SHARKS: Portland Winterhawks forward Joachim Blichfeld signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the San Jose Sharks on Thursday. Blichfeld is having an excellent second season with the Winterhawks. The 6’1” forward has 13 goals and 30 points on the year. He is one of just five Portland players to be averaging over a point-per-game. Blichfeld, a native of Denmark, is in his second season in the WHL, both with Portland. In his WHL career, he has 41 goals and 88 points in 89 games. In 11 playoff games last season, Blichfeld had 5 goals and 11 points. He is currently away from the Winterhawks, representing Denmark at the 2018 U-20 World Junior Championship in Buffalo, NY.
