MESSAGE FROM
WHL COMMISSIONER Last year, during the Western Hockey League’s 50th season, we were privileged to reflect on our rich history and honour the many distinguished builders and alumni who have helped to make the WHL the finest junior hockey league in the world today. As we open the 2016-17 WHL season, the same ideals that fostered the growth our great League still serve as its foundation – a commitment to providing our players with a world class experience from both a hockey and education standpoint. The WHL and our 22 member Clubs take great pride in providing our players with the best possible environment in which to succeed both on and off the ice. On the ice, our high calibre of coaching and arena facilities continue to offer an ideal setting to grow and develop as a player. Off the ice, the WHL Scholarship remains the most comprehensive hockey scholarship in North America with a WHL record of over 350 graduates utilizing their WHL Scholarship at post-secondary institutions across the continent last year alone, representing an investment of over $2 million by WHL Club ownership.
Ron Robison Commissioner Western Hockey League
The WHL Scholarship is one of many commitments WHL Club ownership makes to ensure the success of our players. The WHL Players First support services program expanded last year with the addition of a League-wide WHL Security Network and Police Impact Program which engages local police officers in a liaison capacity with all of our teams to ensure our players are in a safe and respectful environment at all times. This year, the WHL has partnered with the Canadian Mental Health Association to launch the Talk Today program with all of our WHL member Clubs. Talk Today is a proven and important mental health initiative that will help our players and team staff identify and address mental health issues. The development opportunities the WHL provides on the ice and the assistance offered off the ice to our players through the WHL Scholarship and WHL Players First support services programs would not be possible without the support of our great fans as well as our corporate partners, broadcasters and media. The 2016-17 WHL season promises to be another highly entertaining campaign and we look forward to supporting our players and all of our WHL Clubs as they continue to set the standard for development both on and off the ice.

'WHL
The Western Hockey League started with just seven teams based in the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta in 1966. The WHL now has representation in all four Western Canadian provinces and the U.S. states of Oregon and Washington. The WHL now consists of 22 member Clubs with 17 based in Canadian markets and five in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. The WHL is a member of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) whose membership is comprised of three major junior hockey leagues: the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Western Hockey League (WHL). At the conclusion of each league's playoffs, the CHL hosts the MasterCard Memorial Cup, a national championship tournament involving each of the three league champions and the tournament host. The WHL is regarded as one of the finest development leagues in the world today. Each season the WHL is one of the top leagues from which players are selected from in the NHL Draft. Currently over 20% of all NHL players are graduates of the WHL. The WHL is also a leading provider of post-secondary scholarships with over 325 scholarships awarded each year to current and graduate WHL players, more than any other league in North America.
Welcome to Kent …and to the Western Conference Champion Seattle Thunderbirds 2016-2017 season as the T-Birds pursue a return to the WHL Championship! This season starts with an exciting celebration at the first home game of the season as the T-Birds will raise a U.S. Division Champions Banner and a Western Conference Champions Banner. Ethan Bear, Keegan Kolesar and Scott Eansor, leading scorers for the T-Birds last season, return this year as the T-Birds defend their Western Conference Championship. Also returning are Nolan Volcan, Donovan Neuls, Alexander True, Turner Ottenbreit and the hero of Game 4 of the Western Conference Championship, Matthew Wedman. Watch for new Finnish forward Sami Moilanen, who the T-Birds selected in the annual Import Draft, and center Elijah Brown, the 2015 first overall Bantam Draft pick, to do big things. Returning this year is the T-Birds’ popular 2-for-Tuesday promotion, where fans can enjoy 2-for-1 tickets along with $2 concession specials! The very popular Pub Nights, Turkey Shoot and Ham Shoot are always fun nights. If you’re a new visitor to ShoWare Center, you should know we are very proud of this 8 year-old state-ofthe-art arena. The 6,125 seats, 20 suites, and incredible Heritage Club seating section have unmatched hockey sightlines throughout. While you’re in town, grab a bite at Kent Station, a contemporary, open air urban village with a variety of options for pre and post-game gatherings, but don’t leave your car there during an event as they will be towed. Walk a couple blocks south of the Center to discover the charm of historic downtown Kent where even more entertainment and dining choices await you. Go Birds!

Keegan Iverson opened the scoring for the Winterhawks at the 8:04 mark of the first period when he fired a shot at Tri-Cities netminder Rylan Parenteau that bounced off of an Americans’ defender and into the net to give Portland the 1-0 advantage. Tri-Cities then evened the score at 15:42 on a goal by Keltie Jeri-Leon to make it 1-1. The tie wouldn’t last long as just 17 seconds later, Brendan De Jong blasted a shot from the point that beat Parenteau for a 21 lead. With 15 seconds remaining in the first period and the Hawks on the power play, Iverson roofed the puck past Parenteau for his second of the night to give Portland a 3-1 lead going into the second period. Tri-City’s Juuso Valimaki scored a power play goal at the 2:50 mark of the second to cut the lead to 3-2. Then at the 11:36 mark of the second with the teams playing 4-on-4, Vladislav Lukin evened it again at 33 for the Americans. It remained tied until the 8:19 mark of the third period when Tri-City’s Michael Rasmussen scored to make it 4-3. PORTLAND WINTERHAWKS GAME NOTES HAWKS NEWS GLASS TIED FOR LEAGUE LEAD: 17 year-old center Cody Glass is tied for the league lead in scoring entering play tonight with 19 points. His 13 assists are second in the league, while his 6 goals is one off the team lead of 7, from linemate Skyler McKenzie. Glass’ output this season is already fast approaching his career high of 27 points from his rookie season last year. To put his fast start into context, his 19 points is one more than former Winterhawk Nic Petan had through the first 12 games of the 2012-13 season. Petan, who was 17 in that season and a former first round bantam pick like Glass, would go on to score 120 points that season, tied for first in the WHL with teammate Brendan Leipsic. POWER PLAY POTENCY: The Winterhawks have used their power play to great effect en route to their fast start to the season. The Hawks are clicking at 34.0% on the season, good enough for second in the WHL. They’ve scored 17 goals in their 12 games on the man advantage, including a season-high five power play goals in their 7-6 win last Tuesday in Brandon. The Hawks have had balanced scoring while on the power play, with 13 different players recording at least one point on the man advantage. Ryan Hughes leads the way with seven assists, while Keoni Texeira’s four power play goals leads the team in that category. GLASS, JOKIHARJU ON ONES TO WATCH LIST: NHL Central Scouting released its preliminary Players to Watch list on October 4, and defenseman Henri Jokiharju and Cody Glass each made the list. Jokiharju received a ‘B’ rating, while Glass received a ‘C’ rating. The players to watch list is Central Scouting's compilation of top prospects from all the major development leagues throughout North America and Europe. The list is updated throughout the season as scouts travel to see the players live. The 29 players on the list with "A" ratings are considered potential first-round picks. Players with "B" ratings are considered possible second- or third-round choices, and those with "C" ratings are potential fourth-, fifth- or sixth-round selections. IVERSON NAMED HAWKS’ CAPTAIN: Winterhawks Vice President, General Manager & Head Coach Mike Johnston has announced that Keegan Iverson has been named the team’s captain. Iverson made his season debut on September 30 after missing opening weekend while in training camp with the NHL’s Minnesota Wild. Along with naming Iverson captain, the Winterhawks have also named their alternate captains: Caleb Jones, Keoni Texeira and Colton Veloso. Iverson becomes the 41st captain in team history, joining such players as Nic Petan, Braydon Coburn, Adam Deadmarsh, Paul Gaustad, Brenden Morrow and Brent Peterson. He takes over the captain’s position from Dominic Turgeon, who will play in the Detroit Red Wings’ system this season. MIKE JOHNSTON RETURNS: The Hawks’ biggest acquisition over the offseason came off the ice, when Mike Johnston returned to the Winterhawks as the team’s Vice President, General Manager & Head Coach. Johnston originally joined the Winterhawks in that role in October 2008 and remained through the 201314 season, amassing a record of 231-114-10-10. His 231 wins are second in team history, while his winning percentage of. 660 is highest in team history among coaches with at least a full season at the helm. The Winterhawks made four straight trips to the WHL Final from 2011 through 2014, winning the 2013 championship.
PORTLAND WINTERHAWKS GAME NOTES During Johnston’s first tenure in Portland, 24 Winterhawks players were selected in the NHL Draft, including six players selected in the first round: Ryan Johansen, Nino Niederreiter, Sven Baertschi, Joe Morrow, Derrick Pouliot and Seth Jones. During the 2015-16 NHL season, 25 Winterhawks alumni suited up in the NHL, including 16 who played under Johnston in Portland. OLIVER DAVID JOINS STAFF: One of Johnston’s moves over the summer was hiring Oliver David as Assistant Coach, who will join Johnston and Associate Coach Kyle Gustafson behind the bench. David comes to the Winterhawks after three seasons with the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the United States Hockey League, where he was Associate Head Coach & Assistant General Manager. In David’s three seasons in Dubuque they went 108-61-2-9, with a trip to last season’s championship series and back-to-back appearances in the conference final in 2014 and 2015.
