WELCOME TO THE 2017-18 WHL SEASON FROM
WHL COMMISSIONER Calgary, Alta. – As we get set for another Western Hockey League season, there is no shortage of excitement as we eagerly await the opportunity to once again watch the world’s premier junior hockey players in action in each of our 22 markets across Western Canada and the U.S. Pacific Northwest.
Ron Robison Commissioner Western Hockey League
In this the 52nd season of the WHL, our Clubs remain truly committed to providing our players with the highest standard of development, both on and off the ice. We are proud to continue offering our players exactly that, from world-class coaching and management, to a comprehensive WHL Scholarship and education program to a series of Players First support services designed to ensure they develop in a highly positive environment. \ Having awarded a WHL record 374 post-secondary scholarships to WHL graduates this past season, the WHL Scholarship each year provides players with an unparalleled opportunity to pursue their academic endeavours. Of the 374 WHL Graduates to access their WHL Scholarship last season, 185 furthered their hockey careers by playing Canadian University hockey at the U SPORTS level. We anticipate the number of players receiving WHL Scholarships will continue to grow as our graduates take advantage of the WHL Scholarship benefits. On the ice, the 2017-18 season will undoubtedly be one worth remembering, with Regina set to celebrate its centennial season and getting ready to host the 100th edition of the Mastercard Memorial Cup in May. The province of Saskatchewan will also take centre stage in November when Moose Jaw and Swift Current play host to the 2017 CIBC Canada – Russia Series. Without the support of our loyal fans, our corporate partners, broadcasters and media, none of this would be possible. Your ongoing support and dedication to the WHL and our 22 Member Clubs is greatly appreciated. The 2017-18 WHL season promises to be highly entertaining from start to finish. I am sure you will enjoy cheering on your favourite WHL Club as well as watching these top prospects continue their development, both on and off the ice.

The Western Hockey League started with just seven teams based in the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta in 1966. Today, the WHL has representation in all four Western Canadian provinces and the U.S. states of Oregon and Washington. The WHL now consists of 22 member Clubs with 17 based in Canadian markets and five in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. The WHL is a member of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) whose membership is comprised of three major junior hockey leagues: Ontatio Hockey League (OHL), Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Western Hockey League (WHL). At the conclusion of each League’s playoffs, the CHL hosts the Mastercard Memorial Cup, a national championship tournament involving each of the three Leagues’ Champions and the tournament host. The WHL is regarded as one of the finest development Leagues in the world today. Each season, the WHL is one of the top Leagues from which players are selected from in the NHL Draft. Currently, 20% of all NHL players are graduates of the WHL. The WHL is also a leading provider of post-secondary scholarships with over 400 scholarships awarded each year to current and graduate WHL players, more than any other League in North America.

Welcome to Kent …and to the Western Hockey League Champion Seattle Thunderbirds 2017- 18 season as the T-Birds defend their WHL Championship! The season commences with a thrilling celebration at ShoWareCenter as the T-Birds will celebrate theirhistoric 2016-2017 season by raising the Western Conference Champion and Western Hockey League Champion banners. This will be an exciting season under the direction of former assistant coach and now head coach, Matt O’Dette. There will be several new faces but also many key returners. Jarret Tyszka was selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2017 NHL Draft. Three other players from last year’s Championship team attended NHL Development Camps this summer: Nolan Volcan (Pittsburgh Penguins), Turner Ottenbreit (Anaheim Ducks) and Sami Moilanen (Colorado Avalanche). Carl Stankowski, who backstopped the T-Birds to their first WHL Championship in franchise history, will be back in net this season. Watch out for some rookies to have an impact this season, including new Russian forward Nikita Malukhin and last year’s first overall Bantam Pick defenseman Jake Lee. Returning this year is the T-Birds’ popular 2-for-Tuesday promotion, where fans can enjoy two-for-one tickets and beer along with $2 concession specials. Pub Nights, Turkey Shoot and Ham Shoot are great games to make it out to. You also won’t want to miss the first annual Weiner Dog Races this season. If you’re a new visitor to ShoWare Center, you should know we are immensely proud of this 9-year-old state-of-the-art arena. The 6,125 seats, 20 suites and astonishing Heritage Club seating have unsurpassed hockey sightlines throughout. While you’re in town, grab a bite at Kent Station, a contemporary, open-air urban village with a variety of options for pre and postgame gatherings, but don’t leave your car there during an event as it will be towed. Walk a couple blocks south of the Center to discover the charm of historic downtown Kent, where even more entertainment and dining choices are calling your name.

COUGARS TRACKS LAST GAME: The Cougars look for back-to-back wins tonight, as they face the Seattle Thunderbirds at the ShoWare Center in Kent, Washington. Prince George is coming off a 5-4 rollercoaster win over the Victoria Royals on Tuesday. The Cougars took three out of a possible four points against the BC Division-leading Royals, after losing 5-4 in overtime on Sunday. Ryan Schoettler scored twice for the Cougars and Vladislav Mikhalchuk, Cole Moberg and Max Kryski also found the back of the net. Just like they did Sunday, the Cougars led 3-0 Tuesday, and just like Sunday, Victoria rallied in the third period, erasing a 4-1 deficit to tie it. However, unlike Sunday, the Cougars found a way to pull out the two points, as Max Kryski scored the game-winner with less than six-minutes left in the third period, his career WHL goal. Tavin Grant got the win in goal; he was excellent stopping 41 of 45 shots. HEAD-TO-HEAD: Tonight, is the second of four meetings against the Thunderbirds and the first meeting since late September. Back on September 29th, the T-Birds scored a 5-1 win against the Cougars. Seattle got out to a 2-0 lead after one and 4-0 lead after 40-minutes, before the two teams traded goals in the third period. Sami Moilanen led the way for Seattle, picking up a hat-trick in the win. Dennis Cholowski scored the Cougars’ only goal, a power-play goal in the third. Taylor Gauthier suffered the loss in net, stopping 17 of 22 shots. The T-Birds come up to Prince George on January 16th and 17th to finish off the season series. The Cougars won three of four against the Seattle last season, with their only loss at home back in December, of 2016. In those four games the Cougars outscored Seattle 14-11, with Brad Morrison leading the way with four goals and six points. Jansen Harkins was close behind with a goal and five points. Nolan Volcan led all T-Birds in scoring against PG with a goal and five points. ROSTER MOVES: The Cougars made a few moves to their roster on Tuesday. Prince George signed 20-year-old forward Nic Holowko and placed fellow 20-year-old forward Brogan O’Brien on the Injured Reserve with a lower-body injury (month-to-month). Holowko started the season with the Kamloops Blazers and had three goals and four points in seven games, before being released. He was most recently with the Coquitlam Express in the BCHL. Holowko is a veteran of four plus seasons and over 200 games in the WHL. The 6’0, 190-pound winger has 21 goals and 53 points, to go along with 100 penalty-minutes in 208 career regular season games, between Seattle and Kamloops. Also, the team called-up 16-year-old defenceman Cole Beamin (Saskatoon, SK), from the Saskatoon Contacts in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League. Beamin was a second-round pick in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft. Beamin’s call up necessitated by Dennis Cholowski’s departure to Canada’s National Junior Team Sport Chek Selection Camp in St. Catherines, Ontario. Holowko will wear number 17 with the Cougars and Beamin will wear number 19. CHOLOWSKI TEAM CANADA HOPEFULL: Captain Dennis Cholowski is one 32 invitees for Canada’s National Junior Team Sport Chek Selection Camp in St. Catherines, Ontario. Team Canada brass unveiled the selection camp roster on Wednesday morning and Cholowski is one of 13 WHL’ers competing for 22 roster spots. The camp runs December 12th to 15th out in Ontario, and Canada will play three exhibition games, two against a U SPORTS select team and one against Denmark, before trimming their roster down. Canada plays two more exhibition games against Switzerland and the Czech Republic, before their opener on Boxing Day against Finland, at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship in Buffalo, New York. Cholowski is third in team scoring and 12th among defencemen in the WHL with eight goals and 24 points in 27 games; he’s also a +5; he has points in eight of his last 10 games. The Detroit Red Wings draft pick played for Team WHL at the CIBC Canada-Russia series in Moose Jaw and Swift Current Saskatchewan. ON DECK: The Cougars head up north on Interstate 5 tomorrow, as they face the Everett Silvertips at Angel of the Winds Arena. Then they’re in Langley on Sunday afternoon against the Vancouver Giants. After Christmas, the Cougars come back to face the Victoria Royals in a doubleheader on Vancouver Island on December 27th & 28th.
