MESSAGE FROM
WHL COMMISSIONER Last year, during the Western Hockey League’s 50th season, we were privileged to reflect on our rich history and honour the many distinguished builders and alumni who have helped to make the WHL the finest junior hockey league in the world today. As we open the 2016-17 WHL season, the same ideals that fostered the growth our great League still serve as its foundation – a commitment to providing our players with a world class experience from both a hockey and education standpoint. The WHL and our 22 member Clubs take great pride in providing our players with the best possible environment in which to succeed both on and off the ice. On the ice, our high calibre of coaching and arena facilities continue to offer an ideal setting to grow and develop as a player. Off the ice, the WHL Scholarship remains the most comprehensive hockey scholarship in North America with a WHL record of over 350 graduates utilizing their WHL Scholarship at post-secondary institutions across the continent last year alone, representing an investment of over $2 million by WHL Club ownership.
Ron Robison Commissioner Western Hockey League
The WHL Scholarship is one of many commitments WHL Club ownership makes to ensure the success of our players. The WHL Players First support services program expanded last year with the addition of a League-wide WHL Security Network and Police Impact Program which engages local police officers in a liaison capacity with all of our teams to ensure our players are in a safe and respectful environment at all times. This year, the WHL has partnered with the Canadian Mental Health Association to launch the Talk Today program with all of our WHL member Clubs. Talk Today is a proven and important mental health initiative that will help our players and team staff identify and address mental health issues. The development opportunities the WHL provides on the ice and the assistance offered off the ice to our players through the WHL Scholarship and WHL Players First support services programs would not be possible without the support of our great fans as well as our corporate partners, broadcasters and media. The 2016-17 WHL season promises to be another highly entertaining campaign and we look forward to supporting our players and all of our WHL Clubs as they continue to set the standard for development both on and off the ice.

'WHL
The Western Hockey League started with just seven teams based in the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta in 1966. The WHL now has representation in all four Western Canadian provinces and the U.S. states of Oregon and Washington. The WHL now consists of 22 member Clubs with 17 based in Canadian markets and five in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. The WHL is a member of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) whose membership is comprised of three major junior hockey leagues: the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Western Hockey League (WHL). At the conclusion of each league's playoffs, the CHL hosts the MasterCard Memorial Cup, a national championship tournament involving each of the three league champions and the tournament host. The WHL is regarded as one of the finest development leagues in the world today. Each season the WHL is one of the top leagues from which players are selected from in the NHL Draft. Currently over 20% of all NHL players are graduates of the WHL. The WHL is also a leading provider of post-secondary scholarships with over 325 scholarships awarded each year to current and graduate WHL players, more than any other league in North America.
Welcome to Kent …and to the Western Conference Champion Seattle Thunderbirds 2016-2017 season as the T-Birds pursue a return to the WHL Championship! This season starts with an exciting celebration at the first home game of the season as the T-Birds will raise a U.S. Division Champions Banner and a Western Conference Champions Banner. Ethan Bear, Keegan Kolesar and Scott Eansor, leading scorers for the T-Birds last season, return this year as the T-Birds defend their Western Conference Championship. Also returning are Nolan Volcan, Donovan Neuls, Alexander True, Turner Ottenbreit and the hero of Game 4 of the Western Conference Championship, Matthew Wedman. Watch for new Finnish forward Sami Moilanen, who the T-Birds selected in the annual Import Draft, and center Elijah Brown, the 2015 first overall Bantam Draft pick, to do big things. Returning this year is the T-Birds’ popular 2-for-Tuesday promotion, where fans can enjoy 2-for-1 tickets along with $2 concession specials! The very popular Pub Nights, Turkey Shoot and Ham Shoot are always fun nights. If you’re a new visitor to ShoWare Center, you should know we are very proud of this 8 year-old state-ofthe-art arena. The 6,125 seats, 20 suites, and incredible Heritage Club seating section have unmatched hockey sightlines throughout. While you’re in town, grab a bite at Kent Station, a contemporary, open air urban village with a variety of options for pre and post-game gatherings, but don’t leave your car there during an event as they will be towed. Walk a couple blocks south of the Center to discover the charm of historic downtown Kent where even more entertainment and dining choices await you. Go Birds!

U.S. Division 5-5-2-1 Spokane hopes a repeat is in store as they came away with very similar 3-1 wins in their Western Conf 9-9-3-1 first two visits to the ShoWare Center this season, on October 11 and December 13. Eastern Conf 5-4-2-0 Dawson Weatherill is surely not a fan favorite on Seattle’s home ice, as the Chiefs’ Lead after 1st 5-1-0-1 netminder has been outstanding, earning first star on Oct. 11 with 44 saves and third Lead after 2nd 8-0-0-0 star on Dec. 13 with 29 saves. Kailer Yamamoto has been the offensive star for Tied after 1st 7-2-1-0 Spokane against the T-Birds with three goals and an assist in the three games. nd Tied after 2 4-2-1-1 Seattle, on the other hand, hopes to flip the script and match their performance in Down after 1st 2-10-4-0 Spokane on November 15, a 5-2 Thunderbirds win at Spokane Arena. Mathew Barzal, Down after 2nd 2-11-4-0 currently with Team Canada at the WJC, earned first star in that game with two assists, 1-goal games 5-4-5-1 including a helper on Ryan Gropp’s game-winner early in the third period. Team2-goal games 3-4-0-0 leading scorer Scott Eansor has scored twice against the Chiefs this year. 3-goal games 3-2-0-0 Spokane battled tough with the conference-leading Prince George Cougars in their last 4+-goal games 3-3-0-0 game before the holiday break, falling just short in a tight 2-1 contest at Spokane Arena Score 1st 8-5 on Dec. 17. Keanu Yamamoto extended his WHL-leading point streak with 14 games Overtime 2-5 with the Chiefs’ lone goal, assisted by Jaret Anderson-Dolan and Kailer Yamamoto. Shootout 0-1 Weatherill was strong in net with 26 saves but the Chiefs’ penalty kill continued their Red jerseys 5-4-3-0 struggles, allowing one goal in two shorthanded situations. White jerseys 8-6-1-1 The Chiefs’ specialty units have been very inconsistent over the past two weeks. The Blue jerseys 1-3-1-0 power play has been outstanding, scoring 8 goals in their last 28 chances (over 8 Sundays 0-1-0-0 games) and at least one goal in 11 of their last 14 games. The penalty kill, however, has Tuesdays 4-1-0-0 hit a rough patch with 15 goals allowed over the last 8 games (37 PKs). The PP unit Wednesdays 2-2-1-0 ranks 5th in the WHL. The PK has dropped into last place at 72.9% but is slightly better Thursdays 0-0-0-0 on the road at 78.8% (11th). Fridays 5-2-2-0 Tonight is the first game as a Chief for forward Alex Mowbray, who was officially Saturdays 3-7-2-1 picked up by the team earlier today. Mowbray, a 20-year-old from Calgary, played 177 games with Medicine Hat over three seasons before competing with the Camrose Kodiaks (AJHL) for the first half of this season.
SHAKE IT UP… On Dec. 14, the Chiefs completed a trade with the Saskatoon Blades that brought 19-year-old forward Wyatt Sloboshan and 18-year-old defenseman Nolan Reid to the Lilac City while sending overage forward Markson Bechtold and 19-yearold defenseman Evan Fiala to the Blades. Spokane also acquired a 3rd round pick in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft. NOT BAD, JAD… Second-year forward Jaret Anderson-Dolan has turned up the heat over the last 12 games, scoring 12 goals and adding 7 assists to go along with a +8 rating. Four of those 12 goals have come on the PP. Anderson-Dolan has 4 multi-goal games this season after recording one last year. TAKE NOTICE… Kailer Yamamoto has been on a torrid pace during his draft year. The third-year forward has 42 points (20G-22A) in 27 GP to start the season, including 10G & 5A on recently broken 9-game point streak. He was named to January’s 2017 CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Quebec and will play for Team Orr. Yamamoto earned WHL Player of the Week honors on Oct. 31. He has been blanked from the stat sheet just four times (once leaving early with injury). With a late birthday, he will first become eligible for the NHL Entry Draft in 2017. A Spokane native, he impressed in stints at international tournaments w/ Team USA (Five Nations, U18, U-20 NJEC) and produced 128 points (42G, 86A) in his first 2 seasons with the Chiefs (125 GP). Multiple news outlets project Yamamoto as a future 1st round pick, most recently Sportsnet’s updated December rankings with him at 16 th overall. PAVEL PARTY… Forward Pavel Kousal was selected by the Czech Ice Hockey Association to represent the Czech Republic in the 2016 World Junior A Challenge from Dec. 11-17 in Bonnyville, Alberta. He scored 1G & 1A in 5 games as the Czechs earned a 4th place finish, losing to Russia in the Bronze Medal game. Kousal has 7 goals and 2 assists in his first 27 WHL games with Spokane. NUIK WITH THE PUCK… Center Hudson Elynuik has been on a scoring tear, with points in 17 of his last 22 games including 6 goals and 10 assists over the last 10 games as he briefly matched recently-returned-from-injury Kailer Yamamoto for the team’s scoring lead. Elynuik has recorded nine multi-point games, including a 4-point game on Oct. 1 (1-3-4) and a 5-point game on Nov. 25 (3-2-5). MAKE THEM COUNT… Spokane has actually fared better with fewer shots as they are 8-3-0-0 when putting fewer than 30 shots on goal, but only 6-10-5-0 when they get 30+ pucks through to the opposing goaltender. SEND THE HATS FLYING… On Nov. 25 vs. Vancouver, teammates Hudson Elynuik and Jaret Anderson-Dolan each recorded a hat trick. It was Spokane’s first multiple hat trick game since the 2013-14 season, when Mitch Holmberg and Dominic Zwerger each tallied 3 goals against Kamloops (Feb. 23, 2014; 9-4 W). Anderson-Dolan added his second of the year on Dec. 7 vs. VIC. SCORING FROM ALL ANGLES… Over the last 13 games, the Chiefs have scored 56 goals, with 15 different skaters recording at least one, led by Jaret Anderson-Dolan with 12, Keanu Yamamoto with 9 and Hudson Elynuik with 6. Czech forwards Pavel Kousal (4) and Ondrej Najman (2) have provided a helpful spark, along with second-year wingers Hayden Ostir (3) and Ethan McIndoe (4). BIG BROTHER… The older of the Yamamoto brothers, Keanu, has picked up 22 assists in 33 games including 13 power play helpers and a 6-assist game on Nov. 25 vs. Vancouver, which tied for the 2nd-most assists in one game in franchise history. He is currently on a WHL-leading 13-game point streak (8G-12A) and broke a 4-game goal streak on Dec. 7. Keanu is the elder statesman on this year’s Chiefs’ squad with 232 games played. The Yamamoto brothers have been left off the stat sheet just once this season, with at least one of the two recording a point in 32 of 33 games. THEY’RE WATCHING… The Chiefs had five forwards named to the NHL Central Scouting’s preliminary “Players to Watch” list, as announced on Oct. 4 with goaltender Dawson Weatherill joining the same five in their updated November list. Kailer Yamamoto earned an “A” rating, indicating a potential first-round pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. Jaret Anderson-Dolan got a “B” (2nd-3rd) while four players – Ethan McIndoe, Pavel Kousal, Jake McGrew, and Weatherill – earned “C” scores. POWER REVERSAL… The Chiefs’ power play, after starting the season with 9 goals in their first 24 chances, hit a slump in late October, with a stretch of 1 goal in 23 chances. They’ve regained their touch lately, scoring 17 PPGs in their last 13 games (50 PPs; 34%), including 5 vs. VAN on 11/25. BLACK & WHITE… Three Chiefs – D Ty Smith, F Koby Morrisseau and F Eli Zummack – were named by Hockey Canada to the 2016 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Ontario (Oct. 27 – Nov. 5). Smith and Zummack competed for Team Canada Black while Morrisseau is on Team White. Smith was also honored as team captain for Canada Black and tallied two goals in Black’s 4-3 win over Team USA to clinch their group. Black went on to earn silver as Smith and Zummack partnered up for their only goal in a 2-1 loss to Sweden. Morrisseau and Canada White fell in the bronze medal game to Russia. YOUTH MOVEMENT… The Chiefs are one of the youngest teams in the WHL this season with 18 players born in 1998 or later, including six 17-year-olds and four 16-year-olds. Nine of the 18 are WHL rookies. PREMIER PROSPECTS… Three Chiefs’ prospects – all forwards – competed for their respective provincial teams at the 2016 Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup. Carter Chorney (2nd Rd, 39th Overall in 2016 WHL Bantam Draft) scored two points for Alberta, including the GWG in OT of the championship game, Ethan Leyh (8th, 160th) racked up 3G & 4A for BC and Cordel Larson (9th, 186th) represented Team Saskatchewan.
