WELCOME TO THE 2017-18 WHL SEASON FROM
WHL COMMISSIONER Calgary, Alta. – As we get set for another Western Hockey League season, there is no shortage of excitement as we eagerly await the opportunity to once again watch the world’s premier junior hockey players in action in each of our 22 markets across Western Canada and the U.S. Pacific Northwest.
Ron Robison Commissioner Western Hockey League
In this the 52nd season of the WHL, our Clubs remain truly committed to providing our players with the highest standard of development, both on and off the ice. We are proud to continue offering our players exactly that, from world-class coaching and management, to a comprehensive WHL Scholarship and education program to a series of Players First support services designed to ensure they develop in a highly positive environment. \ Having awarded a WHL record 374 post-secondary scholarships to WHL graduates this past season, the WHL Scholarship each year provides players with an unparalleled opportunity to pursue their academic endeavours. Of the 374 WHL Graduates to access their WHL Scholarship last season, 185 furthered their hockey careers by playing Canadian University hockey at the U SPORTS level. We anticipate the number of players receiving WHL Scholarships will continue to grow as our graduates take advantage of the WHL Scholarship benefits. On the ice, the 2017-18 season will undoubtedly be one worth remembering, with Regina set to celebrate its centennial season and getting ready to host the 100th edition of the Mastercard Memorial Cup in May. The province of Saskatchewan will also take centre stage in November when Moose Jaw and Swift Current play host to the 2017 CIBC Canada – Russia Series. Without the support of our loyal fans, our corporate partners, broadcasters and media, none of this would be possible. Your ongoing support and dedication to the WHL and our 22 Member Clubs is greatly appreciated. The 2017-18 WHL season promises to be highly entertaining from start to finish. I am sure you will enjoy cheering on your favourite WHL Club as well as watching these top prospects continue their development, both on and off the ice.

The Western Hockey League started with just seven teams based in the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta in 1966. Today, the WHL has representation in all four Western Canadian provinces and the U.S. states of Oregon and Washington. The WHL now consists of 22 member Clubs with 17 based in Canadian markets and five in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. The WHL is a member of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) whose membership is comprised of three major junior hockey leagues: Ontatio Hockey League (OHL), Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Western Hockey League (WHL). At the conclusion of each League’s playoffs, the CHL hosts the Mastercard Memorial Cup, a national championship tournament involving each of the three Leagues’ Champions and the tournament host. The WHL is regarded as one of the finest development Leagues in the world today. Each season, the WHL is one of the top Leagues from which players are selected from in the NHL Draft. Currently, 20% of all NHL players are graduates of the WHL. The WHL is also a leading provider of post-secondary scholarships with over 400 scholarships awarded each year to current and graduate WHL players, more than any other League in North America.
Welcome to Kent …and to the Western Hockey League Champion Seattle Thunderbirds 2017- 18 season as the T-Birds defend their WHL Championship! The season commences with a thrilling celebration at ShoWareCenter as the T-Birds will celebrate theirhistoric 2016-2017 season by raising the Western Conference Champion and Western Hockey League Champion banners. This will be an exciting season under the direction of former assistant coach and now head coach, Matt O’Dette. There will be several new faces but also many key returners. Jarret Tyszka was selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2017 NHL Draft. Three other players from last year’s Championship team attended NHL Development Camps this summer: Nolan Volcan (Pittsburgh Penguins), Turner Ottenbreit (Anaheim Ducks) and Sami Moilanen (Colorado Avalanche). Carl Stankowski, who backstopped the T-Birds to their first WHL Championship in franchise history, will be back in net this season. Watch out for some rookies to have an impact this season, including new Russian forward Nikita Malukhin and last year’s first overall Bantam Pick defenseman Jake Lee. Returning this year is the T-Birds’ popular 2-for-Tuesday promotion, where fans can enjoy two-for-one tickets and beer along with $2 concession specials. Pub Nights, Turkey Shoot and Ham Shoot are great games to make it out to. You also won’t want to miss the first annual Weiner Dog Races this season. If you’re a new visitor to ShoWare Center, you should know we are immensely proud of this 9-year-old state-of-the-art arena. The 6,125 seats, 20 suites and astonishing Heritage Club seating have unsurpassed hockey sightlines throughout. While you’re in town, grab a bite at Kent Station, a contemporary, open-air urban village with a variety of options for pre and postgame gatherings, but don’t leave your car there during an event as it will be towed. Walk a couple blocks south of the Center to discover the charm of historic downtown Kent, where even more entertainment and dining choices are calling your name.

SUMMARY The Chiefs begin a stretch of three games in three nights tonight as they cap a home-and-home with the Seattle Thunderbirds, hoping to build off a 5-4 overtime win in Spokane on Wednesday. The Chiefs trailed 3-1 in the second period but rallied to tie it at 3-3 and 4-4 before Zach Fischer’s 2nd goal of the night secured the win in OT. Fischer added an assist for 3 points on the night while Hudson Elynuik and Jaret Anderson-Dolan each had a goal and an assist. Riley Woods, Elynuik and defenseman Ty Smith each extended their respective point streaks to 6 games. Seattle’s Turner Ottenbreit earned 2nd star honors with 2 assists and a +1. Tonight marks the mathematical halfway point of the season as the Chiefs are within striking distance in the very tightlycontested U.S. Division race. Only 11 points separate last-place Seattle (35) with first-place Everett (45), with the top four teams all within 5 points of each other. Spokane’s power play unit, after scoring in four-straight games from Nov. 25-Dec. 2, including 8 goals in 23 chances, hit a small slump earlier this month, failing to score in three-straight games (17 PPs) before bouncing back with goals in fourstraight once more; scoring 7 goals in 19 PP opportunities. The Chiefs are 15-4-2 this season when they score at least 1 power play goal.
