WHL COMMISSIONER Last year, during the Western Hockey League’s 50th season, we were privileged to reflect on our rich history and honour the many distinguished builders and alumni who have helped to make the WHL the finest junior hockey league in the world today. As we open the 2016-17 WHL season, the same ideals that fostered the growth our great League still serve as its foundation – a commitment to providing our players with a world class experience from both a hockey and education standpoint. The WHL and our 22 member Clubs take great pride in providing our players with the best possible environment in which to succeed both on and off the ice. On the ice, our high calibre of coaching and arena facilities continue to offer an ideal setting to grow and develop as a player. Off the ice, the WHL Scholarship remains the most comprehensive hockey scholarship in North America with a WHL record of over 350 graduates utilizing their WHL Scholarship at post-secondary institutions across the continent last year alone, representing an investment of over $2 million by WHL Club ownership.

The WHL Scholarship is one of many commitments WHL Club ownership makes to ensure the success of our players. The WHL Players First support services program expanded last year with the addition of a League-wide WHL Security Network and Police Impact Program which engages local police officers in a liaison capacity with all of our teams to ensure our players are in a safe and respectful environment at all times. This year, the WHL has partnered with the Canadian Mental Health Association to launch the Talk Today program with all of our WHL member Clubs. Talk Today is a proven and important mental health initiative that will help our players and team staff identify and address mental health issues. The development opportunities the WHL provides on the ice and the assistance offered off the ice to our players through the WHL Scholarship and WHL Players First support services programs would not be possible without the support of our great fans as well as our corporate partners, broadcasters and media. The 2016-17 WHL season promises to be another highly entertaining campaign and we look forward to supporting our players and all of our WHL Clubs as they continue to set the standard for development both on and off the ice.

Welcome to Kent …and to the Western Conference Champion Seattle Thunderbirds 2016-2017 season as the T-Birds pursue a return to the WHL Championship! This season starts with an exciting celebration at the first home game of the season as the T-Birds will raise a U.S. Division Champions Banner and a Western Conference Champions Banner. Ethan Bear, Keegan Kolesar and Scott Eansor, leading scorers for the T-Birds last season, return this year as the T-Birds defend their Western Conference Championship. Also returning are Nolan Volcan, Donovan Neuls, Alexander True, Turner Ottenbreit and the hero of Game 4 of the Western Conference Championship, Matthew Wedman. Watch for new Finnish forward Sami Moilanen, who the T-Birds selected in the annual Import Draft, and center Elijah Brown, the 2015 first overall Bantam Draft pick, to do big things. Returning this year is the T-Birds’ popular 2-for-Tuesday promotion, where fans can enjoy 2-for-1 tickets along with $2 concession specials! The very popular Pub Nights, Turkey Shoot and Ham Shoot are always fun nights. If you’re a new visitor to ShoWare Center, you should know we are very proud of this 8 year-old state-ofthe-art arena. The 6,125 seats, 20 suites, and incredible Heritage Club seating section have unmatched hockey sightlines throughout. While you’re in town, grab a bite at Kent Station, a contemporary, open air urban village with a variety of options for pre and post-game gatherings, but don’t leave your car there during an event as they will be towed. Walk a couple blocks south of the Center to discover the charm of historic downtown Kent where even more entertainment and dining choices await you. Go Birds!

Last Game…The Portland Winterhawks defeated the T-Bird 4-1 Saturday at ShoWare Center. Ryan Gropp had the lone T-Birds goal. Matt Berlin made 37 saves. Colton Veloso had two goals for Portland and Keoni Texeira and Alex Overhardt each had a goal. Cole Kehler had 31 saves. T-Birds Playoff Standings…Seattle is 45-20-4-2 and will finish the regular season in second place in the U.S. Division. They will play the Tri-City Americans or Portland Winterhawks in the first round of the playoffs starting Friday, March 24, at ShoWare Center. Portland is one point ahead of Tri-City with both having games on Sunday. Portland hosts Spokane and Tri-City hosts Everett. The T-Birds clinched a spot in the 2017 playoffs with a 6-1 win over Everett on February 26 and will have home-ice in the first round of the playoffs. T-Birds Sign Tyler Carpendale…Center Tyler Carpendale signed a WHL Standard Player Agreement with the team on March 11. Carpendale made his T-Bird debut at Portland, March 11. He played this season with the Westshore Wolves in the VIJHL and had eight goals and eight assists for 16 points with ten penalty minutes in 34 games. Carpendale is 6’3 and 202 pounds, a 2000 birth year and was selected in the sixth round, 125th overall, in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft. Back-to-Back 40 Win Seasons…For the second time in franchise history the T-Birds have won 40 or more games in back-to-back seasons. This season the T-Birds are 45-20-4-2 with four games remaining. Last season, 2015-16, the TBirds were 45-23-0-4. The first time the team had back-to-back seasons of 40 or more wins was 1989-90 and 1990-91. In 1989-90 the T-Birds were 52-17-3(tie) and in 1990-91 they were 42-26-4(tie). Barzal Named Player of the Month for February…The WHL announced March 1 center Mathew Barzal was named the WHL Player of the Month for February 2017. Barzal registered 33 points (2G-31A) in 14 games to help the team go 10-3-0-1 during the month of February. In February, he had 10 multipoint performances, including four games with four points or more. Bear Has Franchise Record For Goals Scored By A Defenseman…Defenseman Ethan Bear set the franchise record for goals scored by a defenseman on February 13 in Kelowna when he scored the T-Birds first goal of the game, which was the 59th goal of his T-Bird career. Bear passed Shea Theodore who had 58 goals and 154 assists for 212 points in 258 career games in four seasons with the T-Birds from 2010-11 to 2014-15. Bear has 66 goals and 126 assists for 192 career points in 262 games in his four seasons with the T-Birds. Bear is now second in team history in points by a defenseman with 192 and is 20 points behind Theodore for first in career points by a defenseman. Toth Tied For Second In Most Wins In A Season…Goalie Rylan Toth is 36-18-2-1 this season putting him in a tie for second place with Bryan Bridges for most wins by a goalie in a season. Bridges was a 36-20-2(tie) in the 2004-05 season. Danny Lorenz is in first place in team history for wins in a season when he went 37-15-2(tie) in the 1989-90 season. Cody Rudkowsky is in fourth place with a 34-16-1(tie) record in the 1998-99 season. Konowalchuk Second In Career Wins…Head coach Steve Konowalchuk is second in team history in head coaching wins. Konowalchuk has a 218-185-22-15 record in six seasons at the T-Birds helm. Rob Sumner has the most coaching wins in team history with a 238-207-2(tie)-22-35 record in six seasons.

Bear From The Blue Line…Ethan Bear has 18 goals and 28 assists in the last 36 games and is third on the team in scoring. He had a 15-game point streak come to an end in the win over Spokane. Bear had 10 goals and 16 assists in the last 16 games. He has 28 goals and 42 assists for 70 points. Bear’s 28 goals are a career high in a season for the defenseman. He has passed his career high in points from last season when he had 19 goals and 46 assists for 65 points. Keegs Converting…Keegan Kolesar has 21 goals and 28 assists for 49 points in the last 31 games. He has 26 goals and 32 assists for 58 points in 53 games and is fourth on the team in scoring. Kolesar’s 32 assists are a season high for the right wing. Kolesar had a 15-game point streak snapped in the win over Everett on March 10. Kolesar had 13 goals and 14 assists in the 15-game streak. 3 Ranked in NHL Central Scouting Midterm Rankings…Three Seattle Thunderbirds are ranked in the NHL Central Scouting Midterm Rankings of North American Skaters eligible for the 2017 NHL Draft released Wednesday. Defenseman Jarret Tyszka is ranked number 33 by NHL Central Scouting. This season Tyszka has six goals and 18 assists for 24 points in 53 games. Right wing Sami Moilanen is ranked number 93 in the Midterm Rankings. Moilanen has 21 goals and 20 assists for 41 points in 69 games. Calvin Spencer and Jordan Borstmayer had Vancouver’s goals while Kole Lind, Nolan Foote, Leif Mattson, Devante Stephens and Reid Gardiner scored for the visitors.
