WELCOME TO THE 2017-18 WHL SEASON FROM
WHL COMMISSIONER Calgary, Alta. – As we get set for another Western Hockey League season, there is no shortage of excitement as we eagerly await the opportunity to once again watch the world’s premier junior hockey players in action in each of our 22 markets across Western Canada and the U.S. Pacific Northwest.
Ron Robison Commissioner Western Hockey League
In this the 52nd season of the WHL, our Clubs remain truly committed to providing our players with the highest standard of development, both on and off the ice. We are proud to continue offering our players exactly that, from world-class coaching and management, to a comprehensive WHL Scholarship and education program to a series of Players First support services designed to ensure they develop in a highly positive environment. \ Having awarded a WHL record 374 post-secondary scholarships to WHL graduates this past season, the WHL Scholarship each year provides players with an unparalleled opportunity to pursue their academic endeavours. Of the 374 WHL Graduates to access their WHL Scholarship last season, 185 furthered their hockey careers by playing Canadian University hockey at the U SPORTS level. We anticipate the number of players receiving WHL Scholarships will continue to grow as our graduates take advantage of the WHL Scholarship benefits. On the ice, the 2017-18 season will undoubtedly be one worth remembering, with Regina set to celebrate its centennial season and getting ready to host the 100th edition of the Mastercard Memorial Cup in May. The province of Saskatchewan will also take centre stage in November when Moose Jaw and Swift Current play host to the 2017 CIBC Canada – Russia Series. Without the support of our loyal fans, our corporate partners, broadcasters and media, none of this would be possible. Your ongoing support and dedication to the WHL and our 22 Member Clubs is greatly appreciated. The 2017-18 WHL season promises to be highly entertaining from start to finish. I am sure you will enjoy cheering on your favourite WHL Club as well as watching these top prospects continue their development, both on and off the ice.

The Western Hockey League started with just seven teams based in the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta in 1966. Today, the WHL has representation in all four Western Canadian provinces and the U.S. states of Oregon and Washington. The WHL now consists of 22 member Clubs with 17 based in Canadian markets and five in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. The WHL is a member of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) whose membership is comprised of three major junior hockey leagues: Ontatio Hockey League (OHL), Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Western Hockey League (WHL). At the conclusion of each League’s playoffs, the CHL hosts the Mastercard Memorial Cup, a national championship tournament involving each of the three Leagues’ Champions and the tournament host. The WHL is regarded as one of the finest development Leagues in the world today. Each season, the WHL is one of the top Leagues from which players are selected from in the NHL Draft. Currently, 20% of all NHL players are graduates of the WHL. The WHL is also a leading provider of post-secondary scholarships with over 400 scholarships awarded each year to current and graduate WHL players, more than any other League in North America.
Welcome to Kent …and to the Western Hockey League Champion Seattle Thunderbirds 2017- 18 season as the T-Birds defend their WHL Championship! The season commences with a thrilling celebration at ShoWareCenter as the T-Birds will celebrate theirhistoric 2016-2017 season by raising the Western Conference Champion and Western Hockey League Champion banners. This will be an exciting season under the direction of former assistant coach and now head coach, Matt O’Dette. There will be several new faces but also many key returners. Jarret Tyszka was selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2017 NHL Draft. Three other players from last year’s Championship team attended NHL Development Camps this summer: Nolan Volcan (Pittsburgh Penguins), Turner Ottenbreit (Anaheim Ducks) and Sami Moilanen (Colorado Avalanche). Carl Stankowski, who backstopped the T-Birds to their first WHL Championship in franchise history, will be back in net this season. Watch out for some rookies to have an impact this season, including new Russian forward Nikita Malukhin and last year’s first overall Bantam Pick defenseman Jake Lee. Returning this year is the T-Birds’ popular 2-for-Tuesday promotion, where fans can enjoy two-for-one tickets and beer along with $2 concession specials. Pub Nights, Turkey Shoot and Ham Shoot are great games to make it out to. You also won’t want to miss the first annual Weiner Dog Races this season. If you’re a new visitor to ShoWare Center, you should know we are immensely proud of this 9-year-old state-of-the-art arena. The 6,125 seats, 20 suites and astonishing Heritage Club seating have unsurpassed hockey sightlines throughout. While you’re in town, grab a bite at Kent Station, a contemporary, open-air urban village with a variety of options for pre and postgame gatherings, but don’t leave your car there during an event as it will be towed. Walk a couple blocks south of the Center to discover the charm of historic downtown Kent, where even more entertainment and dining choices are calling your name.

Seattle Thunderbirds vs. Portland Winterhawks
Sunday, March 4
Previous Game…The Everett Silvertips defeated the T-Birds 2-1 in overtime Saturday in Everett. Noah Philp had the only goal for the T-Birds. Liam Hughes had 44 saves. Conner Dewar scored the overtime winning goal and Patrick Bajkov scored in regulation for Everett. Carter Hart had 17 saves. Playoff Position…The T-Birds have a 30-24-8-2 record and are in the second wild card playoff spot in the Western Conference. They are three points behind the first-place wild card team, the Tri-City Americans, who have a 32-23-8-1 record. The Kamloops Blazers are seven points behind the T-Birds for the final wild card playoff spot. The T-Birds have three games in hand on the Blazers. The T-Birds are 11 points behind the third place Spokane Chiefs in the US Division. Magic Number…The T-Birds magic number to clinch at least the second wild card playoff spot is two. Any combination of T-Birds wind and Kamloops Blazers losses equaling two and the T-Birds will clinch a playoff spot. The Blazers do not play today. So a T-Birds win against the Winterhawks would move the T-Birds magic number to one. Streaking Birds…Noah Philp has a five-game point streak with two goals and six assists in the last four games…Zack Andrusiak has a three-game point streak with five goals and three assists in the last three games…Turner Ottenbreit has a three-game assist streak. Tyrel Bauer Joins T-Birds…Defenseman Tyrel Bauer has joined the team for the remainder of the regular season. Bauer was the T-Birds second round pick, 41st overall, in the 2017 Bantam Draft. Bauer played with the Airdrie CFR Bisons this season and had three goals and eight assists in 32 games with 101 penalty minutes. Bauer has played two games with the T-Birds this season, making his debut on November 2 at Edmonton. Harsch In NHL Midterm Rankings…Defenseman Reece Harsch has six goals and five assists in the last 15 games he has played. In the recent NHL Midterm Rankings for 2018 NHL Draft Eligible Players Harsch was ranked number 188. 12 With 20 Or More…12 T-Birds have 20 or more points this season. They are Donovan Neuls (21-46-67), Nolan Volcan (27-37-64), Zack Andrusiak (29-35-64), Austin Strand (20-34-54), Noah Philp (14-32-46), Matthew Wedman (15-26-41), Turner Ottenbreit (8-33-41), Sami Moilanen (19-18-37), Jarret Tyszka (8-29-37), Dillon Hamaliuk (14-2135), Blake Bargar (11-13-24) and Reece Harsch (9-12-21). Sixth On The PK…The T-Birds are sixth in the WHL on the penalty kill. They have an 79.5% penalty kill rate having given up 54 goals on 263 shorthanded chances. Ninth On The Power Play…The T-Birds are ninth in the WHL on the power play. They have a 22.5% conversion rate with 55 goals on 244 chances. Donnie On The Mark…Donovan Neuls has 21 goals and 46 assists for 67 points in 64 games this season and is first on the team in scoring. Neuls has 12 goals and 20 assists in the last 27 games. Neuls has 56 goals and 115 assists for 171 points in 274 career games with the T-Birds. His 67 points this season are a career high. Volcan Point Watch…Nolan Volcan has 27 goals and 37 assists for 64 points in 63 games this season and is second on the team in scoring. He had a team season high of a goal and four assists December 17 at Spokane in a 10-3 win. Volcan had a hat trick January 19 vs. Kelowna. Volcan has 10 goals and 10 assists in the last 22 games. He has passed his career high for points in a season and has played 256 career games and has 68 goals and 94 assists for 162 points. Zack Attack…Zack Andrusiak has 11 goals and 12 assists in the last 24 games and 21 goals and 26 assists in the last 43 games and is third on the team in scoring.
