WELCOME TO THE 2017-18 WHL SEASON FROM
WHL COMMISSIONER Calgary, Alta. – As we get set for another Western Hockey League season, there is no shortage of excitement as we eagerly await the opportunity to once again watch the world’s premier junior hockey players in action in each of our 22 markets across Western Canada and the U.S. Pacific Northwest.
Ron Robison Commissioner Western Hockey League
In this the 52nd season of the WHL, our Clubs remain truly committed to providing our players with the highest standard of development, both on and off the ice. We are proud to continue offering our players exactly that, from world-class coaching and management, to a comprehensive WHL Scholarship and education program to a series of Players First support services designed to ensure they develop in a highly positive environment. \ Having awarded a WHL record 374 post-secondary scholarships to WHL graduates this past season, the WHL Scholarship each year provides players with an unparalleled opportunity to pursue their academic endeavours. Of the 374 WHL Graduates to access their WHL Scholarship last season, 185 furthered their hockey careers by playing Canadian University hockey at the U SPORTS level. We anticipate the number of players receiving WHL Scholarships will continue to grow as our graduates take advantage of the WHL Scholarship benefits. On the ice, the 2017-18 season will undoubtedly be one worth remembering, with Regina set to celebrate its centennial season and getting ready to host the 100th edition of the Mastercard Memorial Cup in May. The province of Saskatchewan will also take centre stage in November when Moose Jaw and Swift Current play host to the 2017 CIBC Canada – Russia Series. Without the support of our loyal fans, our corporate partners, broadcasters and media, none of this would be possible. Your ongoing support and dedication to the WHL and our 22 Member Clubs is greatly appreciated. The 2017-18 WHL season promises to be highly entertaining from start to finish. I am sure you will enjoy cheering on your favourite WHL Club as well as watching these top prospects continue their development, both on and off the ice.

The Western Hockey League started with just seven teams based in the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta in 1966. Today, the WHL has representation in all four Western Canadian provinces and the U.S. states of Oregon and Washington. The WHL now consists of 22 member Clubs with 17 based in Canadian markets and five in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. The WHL is a member of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) whose membership is comprised of three major junior hockey leagues: Ontatio Hockey League (OHL), Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Western Hockey League (WHL). At the conclusion of each League’s playoffs, the CHL hosts the Mastercard Memorial Cup, a national championship tournament involving each of the three Leagues’ Champions and the tournament host. The WHL is regarded as one of the finest development Leagues in the world today. Each season, the WHL is one of the top Leagues from which players are selected from in the NHL Draft. Currently, 20% of all NHL players are graduates of the WHL. The WHL is also a leading provider of post-secondary scholarships with over 400 scholarships awarded each year to current and graduate WHL players, more than any other League in North America.

Welcome to Kent …and to the Western Hockey League Champion Seattle Thunderbirds 2017- 18 season as the T-Birds defend their WHL Championship! The season commences with a thrilling celebration at ShoWareCenter as the T-Birds will celebrate theirhistoric 2016-2017 season by raising the Western Conference Champion and Western Hockey League Champion banners. This will be an exciting season under the direction of former assistant coach and now head coach, Matt O’Dette. There will be several new faces but also many key returners. Jarret Tyszka was selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2017 NHL Draft. Three other players from last year’s Championship team attended NHL Development Camps this summer: Nolan Volcan (Pittsburgh Penguins), Turner Ottenbreit (Anaheim Ducks) and Sami Moilanen (Colorado Avalanche). Carl Stankowski, who backstopped the T-Birds to their first WHL Championship in franchise history, will be back in net this season. Watch out for some rookies to have an impact this season, including new Russian forward Nikita Malukhin and last year’s first overall Bantam Pick defenseman Jake Lee. Returning this year is the T-Birds’ popular 2-for-Tuesday promotion, where fans can enjoy two-for-one tickets and beer along with $2 concession specials. Pub Nights, Turkey Shoot and Ham Shoot are great games to make it out to. You also won’t want to miss the first annual Weiner Dog Races this season. If you’re a new visitor to ShoWare Center, you should know we are immensely proud of this 9-year-old state-of-the-art arena. The 6,125 seats, 20 suites and astonishing Heritage Club seating have unsurpassed hockey sightlines throughout. While you’re in town, grab a bite at Kent Station, a contemporary, open-air urban village with a variety of options for pre and postgame gatherings, but don’t leave your car there during an event as it will be towed. Walk a couple blocks south of the Center to discover the charm of historic downtown Kent, where even more entertainment and dining choices are calling your name.

ROAD TRIP: Tonight, is the first of a three-game road trip for the Cougars, which sees them stop in Portland Sunday and Kamloops next Wednesday, before returning home October 6th & 7th against Kelowna. The Cougars should feel right at home on the road, as they sported the best road record in the Western Conference last season, going 23-11-2-0 in 36 games. Their .667 road winning percentage was third-best in the entire WHL, only behind Regina and Medicine Hat. PG won both of their games at the ShoWare Center last year, both by 3-2 scores. The Cougars picked up a 3-2 shootout win back on October 14th, of last year and again, in regulation, right before the Christmas break on December 16th. COUGARS-THUNDERBIRDS: The Cougars won three of four against the T-Birds last season, with their only loss at home back in December. In those four games the Cougars outscored Seattle 14-11, with Brad Morrison leading the way with four goals and six points. Jansen Harkins was close behind with a goal and five points and Jesse Gabrielle had a pair of goals and three points. Nolan Volcan led all T-Birds in scoring against PG with a goal and five points. He had a four-point night against the Cougars in a losing effort on December 10th, at the CN Centre. TRADE WINDS: The Cougars addressed their over-age situation this week by trading defenceman Tate Olson to the Lethbridge Hurricanes, in exchange for a third-round selection in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft. Olson played in 252 career regular season games spanning four seasons with the Cougars, compiling 23 goals and 107 points, to go along with 236 penalty-minutes. The Saskatchewan product was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks in the seventh round, 210th overall, in the 2015 NHL Draft. Olson was originally selected by the Cougars in the second round, 24th overall, in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft. With Olson moving on, the Cougars are now left with four 20-year-olds on their roster. HE’S BACK: The Cougars blue-line was bolstered this week but the return of 19-year-old defenceman Dennis Cholowski from Detroit Red Wings Training Camp. Cholowski, the Red Wings first round selection in 2016, played in four preseason games, picking up one assist and logging an average of 19-minutes of ice time. The Langley, BC, native played in one pre-season game for the Cougars in Red Deer, Alberta, earlier this month before taking off for Detroit. six are in their 18-year-old season, nine are in their 17-year-old season and one is in their 16-year-old season. 15 of the 27 players on the roster were drafted by the Cougars in the WHL Bantam Draft, five players were acquired via trade, and eight were players added via the Cougars 50-man Protected List as free-agents. BONDRA TURNS PRO: Monday the American Hockey League’s (AHL) Rockford IceHogs, the NHL affiliate of the Chicago Blackhawks, announced the signing of 20-year-old Radovan Bondra. Bondra was drafted by the Blackhawks in 2015, in the fifth round, 151st overall. In 62 games, last year split between the Cougars and the Vancouver Giants, Bondra amassed 32 goals and 63 points in 62 games. In his three seasons in the WHL, the Slovak compiled 47 goals and 93 points in 120 career regular season games; He had another 10 points in 12 career playoff games. With Bondra’s signing, the Cougars are now down to their two import spots with Nikita Popugaev and Vladislav Mikhalchuk. WHL NEXT GENERATION- TAYLOR GAUTHIER: Cougars’ netminder Taylor Gauthier (01) is one of the 22-players featured in the WHL’s Next Generation feature series on their website. The league profiled what they described as “22 potential future starts of the league” during the pre-season and Gauthier certainly has attracted attention. The Cougars’ First Round choice, 10th overall, in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft has had a very productive pre-season. In three appearances the Calgary, Alberta, native has fashioned together a 2.12 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage. Prince George certainly has high hopes for Gauthier, who was the first goalie taken inside the 10 of the WHL Bantam Draft, since Carey Price went seventh overall to Tri-Cities in 2002. Last season, as a 15-year-old, Gauthier led his CBHA Midget AAA Buffalos to an Alberta Midget Hockey League regular season title. In 17 appearances with the Buffalos last season, Gauthier put up a 2.06 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage. This past summer Gauthier was invited to the Hockey Canada’s U-17 Summer Development Camp. NEW FACES, IN NEW PLACES: The Cougars will have 12 rookies on their current roster. Of those dozen, there’s some familiar names who have suited up for games with the Cougars in the past. On the blue-line, Jonas Harkins and Cole Moberg both played in regular season games last season. Moberg scored his first WHL goal on the road against the Vancouver Giants back on November 10th, of last year. Max Kryski also suited up for two regular season games a season ago for PG. Ethan O’Rourke and Tavin Grant are a pair of Cougars who are looking to gain full-time status after starting last season with the team. Both finished the season across town with the Spruce Kings in the BCHL, but both are looking to build off an impressive pre-season. 18-year-old O’Rourke led the Cougars with four goals and five points in the fourpre-season games. Grant yielded just two goals in three appearances, posting a 1.21 goals-against average and a .964 save percentage. It’s a three-way battle in the Cougars’ crease and Grant is looking to solidify the number one job, by caring over his strong pre-season into the games that count. ALUMNI WATCH: The Cougars had a handful of players, past and present, at NHL Training Camps this month. Jesse Gabrielle had a goal in two games with the Boston Bruins before being re-assigned to the Providence Bruins of the AHL earlier this week. Jansen Harkins played at the YoungStars Tournament in Penticton for the Winnipeg Jets and now is in camp with their farm team, the Manitoba Moose. Brendan Guhle is in camp with the Rochester Americans, the farm club of the Buffalo Sabres. Colby McAuley is in camp with the San Jose Barracuda in the AHL, and former Captain Sam Ruopp recently committed to the University of Saskatchewan after a tryout with Calgary Flames. Nikita Popugaev attend New Jersey Devils camp, Josh Anderson was with the Colorado Avalanche and Cholowski with the Red Wings. Kody McDonald was a free agent invitee on the Winnipeg Jets YoungStars Tournament roster.
