WELCOME TO THE 2019-20 WHL SEASON FROM
WHL COMMISSIONER
Calgary, Alta. – The dawn of a new Western Hockey League season is here and we are thrilled to be witness to the world’s premier junior hockey players as they showcase their talents in each of our 22 markets across Western Canada and the U.S. Pacific Northwest. This marks the 54th season in WHL history, and as always, the WHL Player Experience is paramount for WHL Clubs. On and off the ice, WHL Clubs are entrenched in ensuring WHL players receive world-class coaching and competition together with North America’s most comprehensive WHL Scholarship and education program. The WHL’s Players First support services continue to allow players to develop in a safe and positive environment. In the 25th year of the WHL Scholarship, records were shattered for the sixth consecutive season, as 405 WHL graduates accessed their WHL Scholarship during the 2018-19 academic year. The WHL Scholarship continues to provide an unparalleled educational avenue for WHL graduates driven to achieve their academic goals. Of the 405 WHL graduates who accessed their WHL Scholarship,
Ron Robison Commissioner
close to 200continued their hockey development by playing Canadian University hockey at the U SPORTS level this past season. The 2019 NHL Draft also provided reason for celebration as 28 WHL players, including seven in the first round, heard their name called on home ice in Vancouver. The 28 WHL players represent the largest number of players selected from any one developmental league in the world at the 2019 NHL Draft, reaffirming the WHL’s position as a leading producer of NHL talent. The 2019-20 WHL season will see many high calibre events on display in WHL territory. The WHL Cup will return to Calgary in October 2019, showcasing the top prospects in the system from the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft class. The 2019 CIBC Canada Russia Series lands in Saskatoon and Prince Albert in November, as Team WHL faces the Russian National Team in a preview of the 2020 World Junior Championship. Finally, the Memorial Cup, Presented by Kia, returns to Western Canada for the third time in five years, as the Canadian Hockey League’s best from the WHL, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, and Ontario Hockey League take to the ice in Kelowna in May 2020.

The Western Hockey League started with just seven teams based in the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta in 1966. Today, the WHL has representation in all four Western Canadian provinces and the U.S. states of Oregon and Washington. The WHL now consists of 22 member Clubs with 17 based in Canadian markets and five in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. The WHL is a member of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) whose membership is comprised of three major junior hockey leagues: Ontatio Hockey League (OHL), Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Western Hockey League (WHL). At the conclusion of each League’s playoffs, the CHL hosts the Memorial Cup Presented by Kia, a national championship tournament involving each of the three Leagues’ Champions and the tournament host. The WHL is regarded as one of the finest development Leagues in the world today. Each season, the WHL is one of the top Leagues from which players are selected from in the NHL Draft. Currently, 20% of all NHL players are graduates of the WHL. The WHL is also a leading provider of post-secondary scholarships with over 400 scholarships awarded each year to current and graduate WHL players, more than any other League in North America.

Welcome to Kent
…and to the 2019-20 Seattle Thunderbirds season! We are so excited to have you join us for another exciting season with the Seattle Thunderbirds. The year’s home opener will be at accesso ShoWare Center on Saturday, September 21 as the T-Birds take on the Kamloops Blazers. This will be an exciting season under the direction of head coach Matt O’Dette, now in his third season. There will be several new faces this year, but also many key players returning. Matthew Wedman, selected by the Florida Panthers this past June in the NHL Draft, led the T-Birds in scoring last year. He is back for his final season. Henrik Rybinski, also selected by the Panthers in the NHL Draft this past June, will join Wedman up front to provide a dynamic one-two punch. Goalie Roddy Ross, selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2019 NHL Draft, will be counted on between the pipes, and we will watch to see him build on his impressive performance last season. The defensive trio of Tyrel Bauer, Simon Kubicek and Cade McNelly will all be ranked by NHL Central Scouting for the 2020 NHL Draft. Payton Mount, entering his second season, will also see a lot of attention from NHL Scouts this year. Watch for some rookies to have an impact this season, including forwards Kai Uchacz, Lucas Ciona and Conner Roulette, who were all selected in the 2018 Bantam Draft. Returning this year is the T-Birds’ popular two-for-Tuesday promotion sponsored by Chick-fil-A. Fans will be able to enjoy two-for-one specials on tickets, hot dogs, popcorn, soda and beer. The popular Dave and Buster’s Pub Nights are back for four select games this season. The Fred Meyer Turkey Shoot and Ham Shoot are always a fun time as well. The Fred Meyer Teddy Bear Toss presented by WARM 106.9 always sells out, so don’t miss it! All the teddy bears donated are given to local hospitals and fire and police departments to help comfort kids in stressful situations. It’s a fun night for a great cause. Kent is incredibly proud of accesso ShoWare Center. It is a state-of-the-art arena with 6,125 seats, 20 suites and Heritage Club seating. The arena offers unsurpassed hockey sightlines throughout. Don’t forget to stop by Kent Station, a contemporary, urban shopping village with a variety of dining options for pre- and post-game gatherings. I also encourage you to check out historic downtown Kent, where you’ll find more entertainment and dining choices. No matter what you choose, you’ll have more reasons to come back to Kent for your next hockey game. Go Birds!

The Hawks have outscored opponents 38 to 12 during their six game winning streak. Jaydon Dureau recorded his second five point night of his career on Friday night. He and Jarvis became the first teammates to each have five point performances in the same game since Glass and Blichfeld did so on December 2, 2018.
#24 | SETH JARVIS The former 11th overall bantam pick in 2017 just hit 100 points in his WHL career thanks to a five point night on Friday. There is simply no slowing down the second year forward. His 24 January points leads the entire WHL this month and he even missed two games for the NHL/CHL Top Prospects Game. He is now tied for fifth in WHL scoring.
#34 | CONNER ROULETTE Roulette single handedly helped Seattle earn a shootout win against Portland this season. The former second round bantam pick in 2018 has nine points in nine January games and he sits tied for fifth in WHL rookie goal scoring with 15 tallies.
NEWS AND NOTES TOP PROSPECT ON THE RISE... Winterhawks second year forward Seth Jarvis was one of 40 players (24 forwards) who participated in the 2020 CHL/NHL Top Prospect game in Hamilton, Ontario. He played top line wing for Team White in a 5-3 victory, taking two shots on goal. The 17-year-old forward currently leads Portland with 24 goals this season and was recently named the WHL’s On The Run Player of the Week on January 13 after recording ten points in three games. In 112 career regular season games, he has 100 points (40G-60A). Jarvis, a former 11th overall Bantam pick, will be the 17th Winterhawk to participate in the event this decade and the first since Henri Jokiharju and Cody Glass attended the event in 2017. Jokiharju was named the Player of the Game for Team Cherry. Twelve CHL players from last year’s game in Red Deer were chosen in the first round of the 2019 NHL Draft, led by Chicago Blackhawks 3rd overall pick Kirby Dach (Saskatoon). LET’S GO SCOUTING... The Portland Winterhawks are proud to announce five players have been named to NHL Central Scouting’s Midterm Rankings for the 2020 NHL Draft. Defenseman Jonas Brøndberg (107) and second-year forward Robbie Fromm-Delorme (165) round out the quintet of Winterhawks on the list. In total, 51 WHL players were named on the midterm rankings, including at least one representative from 19 of the 22 WHL member clubs. Fourteen competed in the Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game. MAKING HISTORY... The Hawks are 20-1-1-1 at home to open the season, which is a better start at home than the 2012-13 team (20-3-0-0) that won the WHL Championship and won a WHL-best 57 games. GOLDEN IN OSTRAVA... Joel Hofer and Hockey Canada beat Russia 4-3 in Ostrava, Czech Republic at the 2020 World Juniors to clinch Canada’s 18th gold medal. Hofer was recognized as the Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament going 5-0-0-0 with a 1.60 goals-against-average and a .939 save percentage and one shutout. The media also named the Winnipeg native on the tournament All-Star team and Hockey Canada twice named him the player of the game. He made 35 saves in the gold medal game and became the first Winterhawk netminder to win gold at the Top Division. He is also the ninth Winterawk to win the event while playing in Portland that season... the first since Caleb Jones won gold with Team USA in 2017. Henri Jokiharju (Finland, 2019) was the most recent gold medalist, but he technically did so as a member of the Chicago Blackhawks. Overall, Hofer became the 20th Winterhawk to play at the Top Division IIHF World Junior Championships since the 2010-11 season. SWISS SENSATION... Rookie forward Simon Knak made Team Switzerland’s 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship team as a 17 year old, meaning he could play in the event for three consecutive years. He was Switzerland’s Player of the Game during a group play match against Finland on New Years Eve. He scored two goals (against Slovakia and Finland) and took 11 shots during the tournament, but was eliminated in the quarterfinals after a 3-1 loss to Russia. He is also the 21st Hawk to play at the Top Division this decade. THE TOP TEN... Clocking in at second place, the Winterhawks secured their highest ranking of the season on the recent CHL Top Ten rankings thanks to an undefeated streak in regulation that dates back to November 30. This is the eighth time they have been ranked inside the top ten. The Edmonton Oil Kings (5th), Kamloops Blazers (7th) and Everett Silvertips (8th) are the other WHL teams on the leader board. Medicine Hat was an honorable mention. The Hawks are 5-2-0-1 on the season against those ranked opponents. A DECADE TO REMEMBER... The Portland Winterhawks won the most regular season games (455) and playoff games (86; 27 more wins than second place Edmonton) during the last decade, which is the most among any CHL organization. Nic Petan (442), Ty Rattie (423) and Brendan Leipsic (381) also finished the decade in first, second and fifth respectively in WHL scoring [includes playoffs] from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2019. Derrick Pouliot led all WHL defenseman with 278 points in 332 games. MR. 600... On Saturday, November 30, Head Coach Mike Johnston appeared in his 600th regular season WHL game. Through 618 games, Johnston is 387-190-17-24 for 813 points (65% win percentage). He is seeking his ninth straight 40-win regular season with the Winterhawks (2009-14 and 2016-2019). WHL CUP... Three Winterhawks prospects, including two signed, played in the ninth annual WHL Cup. Defenseman Ryder Thompson was named an alternate captain for Hockey Manitoba and captured a silver medal after falling 4-2 to Team Saskatchewan in the gold medal game. Forwards Kyle Chyzowski and Carter Streek each won a bronze medal with Team British Columbia. Streek finished tied for sixth in scoring (3G-2A). The WHL Cup features the highest-rated players in the under-16 age category from the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The tournament will be a four-team round-robin format and is the first step in Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence for players. Alumni Derrick Pouliot and Matt Dumba were All-Stars at the event in 2009. Brendan Leipsic and Skyler McKenzie also played at the event. NEW CAPTAIN IN TOWN... The Winterhawks named third-year defenseman Johnny Ludvig captain for the 2019-20 season, taking over captaincy duties from Cody Glass who is now playing with the Vegas Golden Knights after four seasons in Portland. Ludvig becomes the organization’s 44th captain in team history (since moving to Oregon). It was a busy summer for Ludvig seeing as the Kamloops, BC resident was selected in the third round (69th overall) by the Florida Panthers in the 2019 NHL Draft. TAKE THE KIDS TO CAMP... Five current Portland Winterhawks attended NHL Rookie Camps this summer. Drafted players Johnny Ludvig, Reece Newkirk and Joel Hofer all stayed with their clubs into training camp, while Jake Gricius (San Jose) and Clay Hanus (Ottawa) each got another taste in the NHL. Jaydon Dureau also got to skate in Florida’s Development Camp this past summer. ROOKIE PHENOM... Forward Seth Jarvis recorded 39 points (16-23--39) during his rookie season. That was the most by a 16-year-old Winterhawk during the Mike Johnston era (a tenure in which Johnston coached Cody Glass, Ty Rattie, Nic Petan, Brendan Leipsic, and Chase De Leo all as 16 year olds). Memorial Cup Champion and Stanley Cup winner Andrew Ference (1995-1996) was the last 16-year-old Winterhawk to score 40+ points in one season.
