Welcome to Kent …and to the 2018-19 Seattle Thunderbirds season! We are thrilled to have you and your family join us for another exciting season with the Seattle Thunderbirds. The year’s home opener will be at accesso ShoWare Center on Saturday, September 22 as the T-Birds start their bid to return to the WHL Finals for the third time in four seasons. This will be an exciting season under the direction of head coach Matt O’Dette, now in his second season. There will be several new faces this year, but also many key returners. Jarret Tyszka and Reece Harsch will anchor the blue line for the T-Birds this season. Tyszka was recently at Montreal Canadiens Development Camp while Harsch was at the Las Vegas Golden Knights Development Camp. Nolan Volcan, Zack Andrusiak and Noah Philp return to the lead the T-Birds’ offense. All three players had over 50 points last season. Matthew Wedman, the hero of the 2016 Western Conference Championship, also returns and will add a lot of scoring punch to this year’s team. Watch out for some rookies to have an impact this season, including forward Andrej Kukuca from the Czech Republic and defenseman Simon Kubicek from Slovakia, both taken in the Import Draft. Payton Mount on offense and Tyrel Bauer on defense will play their rookie season with the T-Birds. Mount was selected first and Bauer second by the team in the 2017 Bantam Draft. Also, returning this year is the T-Birds’ popular two-for-Tuesday promotion, where fans can enjoy two-forone tickets and beer along with $2 concession specials. If you are new to hockey, this is a great way to get the family involved on a budget. Pub Nights, Turkey Shoot and Ham Shoot are also great games to check out, and you don’t want to miss the second annual Weiner Dog Races and the Teddy Bear Toss this season. If you’re new to accesso ShoWare Center, you should know we are incredibly proud of this 10-year-old state-of-the-art arena. With 6,125 seats, 20 suites and Heritage Club seating, the arena offers unsurpassed hockey sightlines throughout. While you’re in town, you and your family can grab a bite at Kent Station, a contemporary, urban shopping village with a variety of dining options for pre- and post-game gatherings. You will also enjoy the charm of historic downtown Kent, where you’ll find more entertainment and dining choices. No matter what you choose, you’ll have even more reasons to come back to Kent. Previous Game…The T-Birds defeated the Prince George Cougars 6-5 Tuesday at accesso ShoWare Center. Nolan Volcan had three goal and an assist and Zack Andrusiak had two goals and three assists in the game. Jarret Tyszka had a goal and an assist and Matthew Wedman had two assists. Liam Hughes had 24 saves on 29 shots. Vladislav Mikhalchuk had two goals and an assist. Josh Maser, Jackson Leppard and Matej Toman had goals for the Cougars. Taylor Gauthier made 21 saves on 26 shots and Isaiah DiLaura had 16 saves on 17 shots. Lee and Hamaliuk To Play in CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game…Seattle Thunderbirds general manager Bil La Forge in conjunction with the Canadian Hockey League and National Hockey League Central Scouting announced Thursday defenseman Jake Lee and left wing Dillon Hamaliuk are two of the 40 players that will compete in the 2019 SherwinWilliams CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game. The 24th annual showcase of the CHL’s top prospects eligible for the NHL Draft will take place Wednesday January 23, 2019, at the ENMAX Centrium, home of the Western Hockey League’s Red Deer Rebels. The 40 players were chosen by NHL clubs and include talent from across the WHL, the Ontario Hockey League, and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. “We’re excited Jake and Dillon have been selected for the Top Prospects Game,” said La Forge. “Jake and Dillon have worked hard all season to get the opportunity to play in this game. Our coaching staff and player development staff have done an excellent job working with Jake and Dillon all season to help them get selected." Both Lee and Hamaliuk received a ‘B’ rating from NHL Central Scouting in the November Players To Watch List. This indicates they are both a second or third round NHL draft candidate. The 2019 NHL Draft takes place June 21 and June 22 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Lee, born July 13, 2001, was the T-Birds first round selection, and the 18th overall pick, in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft. This season Lee has played 28 games and has two goals and 15 assists for 17 points. In his rookie year last season Lee played in 64 games and had four goals and six assists for 10 points with 69 penalty minutes. As a 15-year old Lee played in Game 6 of the 2017 WHL Western Conference Final against the Kelowna Rockets. The T-Birds won Game 6 3-1 to win their second consecutive Western Conference Championship. Hamaliuk, born October 30, 2000, was the T-Birds sixth round selection, 111th overall, in the 2015 Bantam Draft. Hamaliuk has nine goals and 15 assists for 24 points in 26 games. Last season Hamaliuk played in 72 games and had 15 goals and 24 assists for 39 points. As an underage 16-year old in the 2016-17 season Hamaliuk played in 17 regular season games and had one goal. Hamaliuk played in Game 1 of the 2017 WHL Championship against the Regina Pats. The T-Birds won Game 1 2-1 in overtime. Tyszka Season Debut…Defenseman Jarret Tyszka made his season debut December 7 against Kennewick. He had missed the first 25 games of the season after he suffered an injury at the Montreal Canadiens Training Camp in September. Tyszka has played 175 games and has 18 goals and 55 assists for 73 points. Tyszka was selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the fifth round, 149th overall, of the 2017 NHL Draft. Streaking Birds…Nolan Volcan has a nine-game point streak with four goals and eight assists in the last nine games. This streak ties Zack Andrusiak for the longest point streak of the season by a T-Bird. Andrusiak 12 goals and two assists over nine games from November 13 to December 7. Back-to-Back-to-Back 40 Shot Games at Home…The T-Birds had a season high 45 shots on goal against Kootenay on November 30 at accesso ShoWare Center in a 7-4 win. They had 44 shots at the next home game, December 8, against the Everett Silvertips which was a 2-1 loss. They had 43 shots against Prince George at home on December 11. Low Shots…The T-Birds gave up a season low 22 shots against the Tri-City Americans on December 7 in Kennewick in a game they won 4-1. Zack Attack…Zack Andrusiak has a team high 21 goals and 10 assists in 28 games of the season and is first on the team in scoring with 31 points. Andrusiak had a team high five-point game with two goals and three assists in the last game against Prince George. Andrusiak has 63 career goals and 53 career assists for 116 points in 167 career games. Andrusiak scored the T-Birds fastest goal to start a game when he scored 14 seconds into the game against the Tri-City Americans on December 7. Nolan Volcan Heating Up…Nolan Volcan had three goals and an assist in the last game and is second on team in scoring with 29 points on 10 goals and 19 assists. He has a nine-game point streak of six goals and nine assists. Volcan
is in his fifth season with the T-Birds and has played in 291 career games with 83 goals and 120 assists for 203 points. In 49 career playoff games Volcan has nine goals and 12 assists for 21 points. Wedman Third In Scoring…Matthew Wedman is third on the team in scoring with nine goals and 18 assists for 27 points in 28 games. Wedman had a career high 47 points last season on 17 goals and 30 assists. In 218 games with the T-Birds he has 38 goals and 70 assists for 108 points. Hammer Time…Dillon Hamaliuk is fourth on the team in scoring with nine goals and 15 assists for 24 points in 26 games. Schwebius Registers First Win…Cole Schwebius had six saves in the first period, seven saves in the second period and eight saves in the third period December 7 at Tri-City to record his first WHL win as the T-Birds beat the Americans 41. Schwebius made his first career WHL start in net for the T-Birds Friday, October 5, against the Everett Silvertips. Andrej Kukuca named to Team Slovakia…General Manager Bil La Forge announced November 27 right wing Andrej Kukuca has been invited to the Training Camp for Team Slovakia for the 2019 World Junior Championship in Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia, from December 26, 2018, to January 5, 2019. It is anticipated Kukuca will leave the TBirds on December 15 to join the Slovakian team. Kukuca has seven goals and 16 assist for 23 points in 28 games this season. He was selected by the T-Birds in the first round, 29th overall, in the 2018 CHL Import Draft. Kukuca had 43 goals and 27 assists in 44 games for Trencin in the Slovakian U20 Junior League last season. In 18 playoff games last season he had 18 goals and 10 assists for 28 points. He is tied for fourth in the WHL in rookie scoring with Adam Beckman of Spokane seven points behind first place Brayden Tracy of Moose Jaw who has 10 goals and 18 assists for 28 points. Prospect Goalie Thomas Milic Named To Team BC…General manager Bil La Forge announced Thursday prospect goalie Thomas Milic will play for Team British Columbia at the Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alberta, from February 16 to February 22. Milic, from Coquitlam, British Columbia, was selected by the T-Birds in the third round, 51st overall, at the 2018 Bantam Draft in Red Deer, Alberta on May 3. Milic signed a WHL Standard Player Agreement with the team on August 28, 2018. This season Milic is playing for the Burnaby Winter Club Prep team in the CSSHL. He has appeared in 11 games and has a 2.72 goals against average and a .900 save percentage. In his bantam season Milic played in 22 games with the Burnaby Winter Club Bantam Prep team and had a 13-7 record with a 2.06 goals against average and a .925 save percentage. Prospect Forward Kai Uchacz Named To Team Alberta…General manager Bil La Forge announced Thursday prospect forward Kai Uchacz will play for Team Alberta at the Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alberta, from February 16 to February 22. Uchacz, from De Winton, Alberta, was selected by the T-Birds in the first round, 10th overall, in the 2018 Bantam Draft in Red Deer, Alberta, on May 3. Uchacz signed a WHL Standard Player Agreement with the team on August 20, 2018. This season Uchacz is playing for the Okotoks Oilers in the AMHL and had 13 goals and 13 assists for 26 points in 20 games. In his bantam season Uchacz played for the Okotoks Oilers Bantam AAA team and had 25 goals and 17 assists for 42 points in 33 games. He played for Team South at the 2018 Alberta Cup and had eight goals and four assists for 12 points in five games. Philp Four…Noah Philp scored four goals at Kelowna on October 10. This is the first time in his career he has scored four goals. And it is his first WHL hat trick and the first hat trick of the season for the T-Birds. Philp had two goals and an assist in his next game, October 13 vs. Edmonton. Lee For Four and Three…Defenseman Jake Lee had his first four-point game on October 13 vs. Edmonton with four assists in a 7-3 win and his first three-point game on October 10 at Kelowna with three assists in the 9-6 win. Lee has two goals and 15 assists for 17 points in 28 games. Davidson’s First…Center Jared Davidson scored his first career WHL goal in the 6-4 win over Portland on Saturday, November 17. He scored the first goal of the game which started the T-Birds comeback from a 2-0 deficit. His goal came at 8:56 of the first period. Savey’s First…Right wing Cody Savey registered his first career WHL point with the second assist on the T-Birds second goal at Spokane on November 16. This assist came at 11:49 of the third period in game won 4-2 by the Chiefs. Bauer’s First Point…Defenseman Tyrel Bauer had the second assist on the T-Birds third goal Saturday against Edmonton. It was a shorthanded goal by Dillon Hamaliuk. The assist was Bauer’s first point as a T-Bird. Bauer was selected in the second round of the 2017 Bantam Draft.

Oct. 30 – SEA 1 at SPO 4 – SPO leads series 1-0 Spokane never trailed in the first game of the series, scoring the game’s first two and final two goals. Riley Woods scored twice, including the game-winner, to earn first star honors. Ty Smith piled up 3A while Bailey Brkin turned aside 22 SEA shots. Nov. 13 – SPO 3 at SEA 2 (OT) – SPO leads series 2-0 The Chiefs rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game with 2 goals in the final 13 minutes of regulation to force OT. Luke Toporowski scored off a Seattle stick with just over a minute left in OT to earn the win. Ty Smith again had 3A in the contest. Nov. 16 – SEA 2 at SPO 4 – SPO leads series 3-0 Dawson Weatherill stood tall in goal, stopping 32 of 34 shots faced to lead the Chiefs to their 3rd win over the T-Birds. The two teams were tied 1-1 heading into the 3rd period before goals from Nolan Reid and Adam Beckman gave the Chiefs the lead for good. Reid added an empty netter for his 2nd goal of the night.
SERIES LEADERS… Ty Smith leads all scorers with 7 points (1G-6A). Eli Zummack has 4A while Riley Woods and Nolan Reid each have 2G. Jaxan Kaluski leads the T-Birds vs. SPO with 3A. Team-leading scorer Zack Andrusiak has 2G. Spokane’s goaltenders have been outstanding; Bailey Brkin allowed 1 goal in his start (22 saves) while Dawson Weatherill has a .945 SV% and 1.94 GAA in 2 starts.
LAST GAME Dec. 12: Spokane (4) vs. Everett (3) SO Spokane earned their first home shootout win since January 2015, winning 4-3 over the division-leading Everett Silvertips on Wednesday at Spokane Arena. Scoring was balanced for Spokane, with no one recording a multi-point game. Luc Smith, Luke Toporowski and Adam Beckman scored the regulation goals while Nolan Reid and Jake McGrew scored in the shootout. Bailey Brkin made 43 saves and was 2-for-2 in the shootout to secure the win.
NEWS & NOTES WJC HOPEFULS… Jaret Anderson-Dolan (Canada), Ty Smith (Canada) and Filip Kral (Czech Republic) have departed to their respective U20 selection camps & hope to compete for their countries at the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship. Anderson-Dolan & Smith have each captained Canadian squads in international competition; AndersonDolan at the 2017 IIHF U18 World Championship and Smith at the 2018 IIHF U18 World Championship, among others. Kral competed with the surprising 4th-place Czechs at the 2018 WJC, scoring one goal in seven games. POWERING UP… Spokane boasts the top-ranked PP unit in the league, scoring on 28.6% of their chances. The Chiefs’ PP has scored at least 1 PPG in 26 of 32 games this season. They have scored multiple PPGs in 9 games. Riley Woods leads the team with 9 PPG (t-7th WHL) while Ty Smith leads in PP points with 16 (2G-14A). Forward Eli Zummack has 13 PPAs. LUC AT THE NEW GUY… The Chiefs announced on Nov. 26 that they acquired F Luc Smith from the Kamloops Blazers in exchange for F Jeff Faith and two picks in the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft. Smith was tied for 2nd on the Blazers in goals (8) and 4th in points (19). The 20-year-old started his WHL career in 2013 with the Regina Pats – where he was once a teammate with current Chief Riley Woods – and was traded to KAM during the 2016-17 season. THE SECOND KING… The Chiefs announced on Dec. 4 that they acquired D Noah King from Swift Current for F Carter Chorney. King played 95 career WHL games with the Broncos, adding 33 playoff games including 26 as the Broncos won the WHL Championship last year. HELPING HAND… Ty Smith leads all WHL defensemen in scoring (13th all skaters) with 39 points including a team-leading 36 assists, which ranks t-3rd among all WHL skaters (1st for D-men). He has been held off the scoresheet just 5 times this season & has 124 career helpers (27th franchise history). ALL RILED UP… Forward Riley Woods continues to have a standout overage season with 43 points through 31 games (t10th WHL). His 23 goals scored rank t-4th in the league. He has recorded 15 multi-point games & 7 multi-goal games (highlighted by 2G & 2A vs. POR on Nov. 4 and his 1st career hat trick at EVT on Nov. 18). He earned WHL Player of the Week honors on Nov. 12 and scored 10G & 8A during the month of November (11 GP). Woods had a career year last season, scoring 57 points including 25 goals, more than double his previous career best. CENTRALLY SCOUTED… Forwards Luke Toporowski and Adam Beckman have the attention of NHL scouts this season, each earning a ‘C’ rating in the NHL Central Scouting November “Players to Watch” list. CANADA WINTER GAMES… Chief prospects D Graham Sward (BC), F Owen MacNeil (AB), F Blake Swetlikoff (SK) and F Logan Cox (SK) have been named to their respective province’s teams for the 2019 Canada Winter Games. The tournament will begin in mid-February in Alberta. RISING ROOKIE… Forward Adam Beckman leads the WHL in goals scored by a rookie with 14 and is t-5th in overall rookie scoring (22). Last season, Beckman played for the Battleford Stars of the SMHL, leading the league in goals (44) and points (78) while earning the league’s Top Forward honors. CANADA BLACK… Rookie F Jack Finley competed with Team Canada Black at the 2018 U17 Hockey Challenge in New Brunswick, picking up 2A in 5GP as Black earned a 5th-place finish. He was one of 21 WHL players representing Canada in the tournament. He was the Chiefs’ 1st round pick in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft. RUSSIAN SPLIT… Defenseman Ty Smith scored 1G in two games with Team WHL as they split vs. Team Russia in the 2018 CIBC Canada-Russia Series on Nov. 7 & 8. Forward Jaret Anderson-Dolan was also selected for the series but could not participate due to injury. THE KING RETURNS… Forward Jaret Anderson-Dolan was reassigned to Spokane by the Los Angeles Kings on Oct. 22. “JAD” appeared in 5 NHL games, picking up his 1st career point with an assist vs. Montreal on Oct. 11. Anderson-Dolan was selected in the 2nd round (41st overall) of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft by the Kings and followed that up by becoming the 22nd player in Spokane’s franchise history to score 40 goals in a season (30th time a Chief has scored 40+ overall). His 91 points earned him Western Conference First Team All-Star honors. During his breakout draft season (2016-17), He became just the fourth ever Chief to score 30+ LAST 5 goals as a 17-year-old player. 12/12: SPO 4 vs. EVT 3 – SOW MR. SMITH GOES (BACK) TO WASHINGTON… Defenseman Ty Smith was reassigned 12/9 SPO 0 at EVT 2 – L by the New Jersey Devils on Sept. 28 and picked up an assist and +3 rating in his first 12/8: SPO 4 vs. KTN 3 – OTW game back. Smith was selected in the 1st round (17th overall) of the 2018 NHL Entry 12/7: SPO 6 vs. LET 2 – W Draft by the New Jersey Devils. He was the highest pick from the Western Hockey 12/5: SPO 2 at EVT 4 – L League and 7th ever Chief picked in the 1st round. Smith ranked 3rd on the Chiefs with NEXT 5 73 points (14G-59A) during the 2017-18 season, good for 2nd among all WHL 12/16: SPO vs. SEA defensemen. He piled up a +44 rating, best on Spokane & 7th in the WHL. His 12/28: SPO vs. EVT standout campaign put him 6th in franchise history in points by a defenseman during 12/29: SPO vs. T.C. a single season. SIGNED SHARK… Forward Jake McGrew signed his entry-level contract with the San Jose Sharks in September, becoming the third rostered Chief with a signed ELC (Anderson-Dolan; Smith). McGrew was selected in the 6th round (159th overall) of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft by the San Jose Sharks, despite missing the entire 2016-17 season with a lower body injury suffered in practice during the 2016 pre-season. McGrew scored 19 goals & 19 assists for 38 points in his first WHL season last year, adding 6 points (2G-4A) in 7 playoff games. CZECH OUT THE NEW LEAF… Defenseman Filip Kral was selected in the 5th round (149th overall) of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Czech blueliner earned the team’s Rookie of the Year award last season after scoring 9G & 26A in 54 games as a rookie. He also competed with the Czech national team at the IIHF World Junior Championship (the Czechs finished 4th). Kral was the Chiefs’ 2nd round (78th overall) pick in the 2017 CHL Import Draft. NEXT LEVEL… The Chiefs had six players invited to NHL rookie camps and tournaments this season, including: RW Jake McGrew – San Jose Sharks (2017 6th round); C Jaret Anderson-Dolan – Los Angeles Kings (2017 2nd round); D Filip Kral – Toronto Maple Leafs (2018 5th round); D Ty Smith – New Jersey Devils (2018 1st round); #29 C Eli Zummack – Toronto Maple Leafs (free agent invite); and G Dawson Weatherill – Boston Bruins (free agent invite). All but Weatherill earned invites to their teams’ full training camp. WHL FLAVOR BEHIND THE BENCH… The Spokane Chiefs boast plenty of WHL experience behind the bench, as all of the team’s coaching staff played in the league at one point. Head Coach Dan Lambert played for Swift Current from 198690, including two years as captain and a Memorial Cup Championship in 1989. Assistant Coach Scott Burt played for four WHL teams from 1994-98, including the division rival Seattle Thunderbirds. Goaltending Coach Ryan Cyr (2000-05) also played for Seattle before stops in Lethbridge and Saskatoon. Part-time assistants Adam Deadmarsh (Portland, 1991-95) and Derek Schutz (Spokane, 1995-00) also played in the league. In total (including playoffs), the coaching staff boasts 1345 games played, 426 goals, 671 assists, 1097 points and 2316 PIM.
