WELCOME TO THE 2018-19 WHL SEASON FROM
WHL COMMISSIONER
Calgary, Alta. – Another Western Hockey League season has arrived and we are excited to unveil the latest edition of the world’s premier junior hockey players as they take to the ice with our 22 WHL Clubs throughout Western Canada and the U.S. Pacific Northwest. As we embark on our 53rd WHL season, the WHL Player Experience continues to be the top priority for our WHL member Clubs. Our Clubs are committed to providing our players with the highest standard of development, both on and off the ice. The WHL takes great pride in offering world-class coaching and North America’s most comprehensive WHL Scholarship and education program, along with an extensive series of support services which ensures our players continue their development in a safe and positive environment. Establishing a new record with 382 post-secondary scholarships awarded to WHL graduates this past season, the WHL Scholarship continues to pave a road to an unmatched educational opportunity for WHL alumni as they pursue their academic goals. Of the 382 WHL graduates who accessed their WHL Scholarship, 183 continued their hockey development by playing Canadian University

hockey at the U SPORTS level this past season. The 2018-19 WHL season will feature many special events. With the 2019 NHL Draft set for Vancouver in June, we are excited for the opportunity to showcase what we believe will be one of the strongest NHL Draft classes in WHL history. Not only will these players be on display nightly in WHL markets, fans will have the opportunity to see these standards in Red Deer – a hub for WHL activity in 2019 – at the Sherwin Williams CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in January. Once again, Red Deer will host the WHL Awards and WHL Bantam Draft in May. Meanwhile, Kamloops and Vancouver will host the 2018 CIBC Canada Russia Series in November, as Team WHL takes on the Russian National Team in a preview of the 2019 World Junior Championship. Through the support of major junior hockey’s best fans, our corporate partners, broadcasters and media the WHL is in a position to provide our players with a world-class experience. Your passion and loyalty to the WHL and our 22 member Clubs is greatly appreciated. The 2018-19 WHL season promises to be exciting as our Clubs battle for a playoff berth and opportunity to capture the Ed Chynoweth Cup. I trust you will once again love cheering on your favourite WHL Club with an incredible group of top prospects on full display as they pursue their dreams, both on and off the ice.

Welcome to Kent …and to the 2018-19 Seattle Thunderbirds season! We are thrilled to have you and your family join us for another exciting season with the Seattle Thunderbirds. The year’s home opener will be at accesso ShoWare Center on Saturday, September 22 as the T-Birds start their bid to return to the WHL Finals for the third time in four seasons. This will be an exciting season under the direction of head coach Matt O’Dette, now in his second season. There will be several new faces this year, but also many key returners. Jarret Tyszka and Reece Harsch will anchor the blue line for the T-Birds this season. Tyszka was recently at Montreal Canadiens Development Camp while Harsch was at the Las Vegas Golden Knights Development Camp. Nolan Volcan, Zack Andrusiak and Noah Philp return to the lead the T-Birds’ offense. All three players had over 50 points last season. Matthew Wedman, the hero of the 2016 Western Conference Championship, also returns and will add a lot of scoring punch to this year’s team. Watch out for some rookies to have an impact this season, including forward Andrej Kukuca from the Czech Republic and defenseman Simon Kubicek from Slovakia, both taken in the Import Draft. Payton Mount on offense and Tyrel Bauer on defense will play their rookie season with the T-Birds. Mount was selected first and Bauer second by the team in the 2017 Bantam Draft. Also, returning this year is the T-Birds’ popular two-for-Tuesday promotion, where fans can enjoy two-forone tickets and beer along with $2 concession specials. If you are new to hockey, this is a great way to get the family involved on a budget. Pub Nights, Turkey Shoot and Ham Shoot are also great games to check out, and you don’t want to miss the second annual Weiner Dog Races and the Teddy Bear Toss this season. If you’re new to accesso ShoWare Center, you should know we are incredibly proud of this 10-year-old state-of-the-art arena. With 6,125 seats, 20 suites and Heritage Club seating, the arena offers unsurpassed hockey sightlines throughout. While you’re in town, you and your family can grab a bite at Kent Station, a contemporary, urban shopping village with a variety of dining options for pre- and post-game gatherings. You will also enjoy the charm of historic downtown Kent, where you’ll find more entertainment and dining choices. No matter what you choose, you’ll have even more reasons to come back to Kent. Go Birds!

GAME NOTES – NOVEMBER 18, 2018 (CONTINUED) REGULAR SEASON GAME #23 – VANCOUVER GIANTS at SEATTLE THUNDERBIRDS A NEW REGIME BEGINS - On May 23rd the Vancouver Giants officially named Barclay Parneta the third General Manager in the history of the Vancouver Giants. Parenta joined G-Men after spending the past eight seasons with the WHL’s Tri-City Americans. For the past three seasons, Parneta served as their Assistant GM and Head Scout and for the five seasons prior he worked as their Prospect Development Coach and Head Scout. Just over a month later the Giants named Michael Dyck Head Coach. Dyck has 14 seasons worth of coaching experience in the WHL including a four-year stint (2006-2009) as Head Coach of the Lethbridge Hurricanes. During his tenure with the Hurricanes, Dyck led his team to a berth in the 2008 league finals and accumulated a record of 132-120-16. He previously served as an assistant coach with the Vancouver Giants from 2002-2005. Then in July the G-Men announced the hiring of former NHLer Jamie Heward as Associate Coach. Heward spent the previous six seasons with the Swift Current Broncos as an Assistant Coach and helped guide them to a 2018 WHL Championship. Prior to coaching, Heward’s professional hockey career spanned 18 seasons. In 394 career NHL games, he scored a total of 38 goals while adding 86 assists and 221 penalty minutes. DRAFT DAY – Three Vancouver Giants were selected in the 2018 NHL Draft. In Round 4 (122nd overall) Milos Roman became the fourth Giant to ever be selected by the Calgary Flames. The 1999-born Slovak scored 10 times and added 22 assists for 32 points in 39 regular season games during his rookie campaign with the Giants. Two rounds later goaltender David Tendeck was selected by the Arizona Coyotes (Round 6, 158th overall). Tendeck was a second-team WHL all-star in 2017-18. He posted a record of 25-16-3-2 with a .912 save percentage, a 3.02 goals-against-average and three shutouts. He was the second Giant to ever be selected by the Coyotes. Three picks later defenceman Alex Kannok Leipert (Round 6, 161st overall) was drafted by the reigning Stanley Cup Champion Washington Capitals. Kannok Leipert potted five goals and added 16 assists for 21 points in 60 regular season games in 2017-18. He’s the second Giant to ever be selected by the Washington Capitals. BYRAM, TENDECK SHOW WELL FOR TEAM WHL – On November 5th and 6th both defenceman Bowen Byram and goaltender David Tendeck suited up in two games for Team WHL in the 2018 CIBC Canada Russia Series. Team WHL ended up splitting the two matchups with Team WHL winning 2-1 on Monday, November 5th in Kamloops before dropping a 3-1 decision at the Langley Events Centre on Tuesday, November 6th. Bowen Byram logged big minutes in all situations on the back-end for Team WHL while goaltender David Tendeck made 25 saves to earn Team WHL Player of the Game honours on November 6th. BYRAM, MINER ARE ONES TO WATCH – NHL Central Scouting released their 2018-19 Players to Watch List for the 2019 NHL Draft and two Vancouver Giants made the grade. Defenceman Bowen Byram (Cranbrook, B.C.) was ranked as an (A) prospect which means he’s projected to be a first-round pick. Goaltender Trent Miner (Brandon, MB) was listed as a (B) prospect which means he’s projected to be a second or third round pick. Trent Miner was named WHL Goaltender of the Week twice in October (Week if Oct. 7 and Oct. 21). LET’S MAKE A DEAL – Giants GM Barclay Parneta recently pulled the trigger on a deal with the Calgary Hitmen. On Wednesday, October 31 the Giants acquired 2000-born forward Tristen Nielsen (Fort St. John, B.C.) in exchange for 1999-born forward James Malm and a conditional draft pick in 2020. Nielsen joins the G-Men after suiting up in 106 career games with the Calgary Hitmen. Last season Nielsen potted 19 goals while adding 16 assists for 35 points along with 24 penalty minutes. He was originally selected by the Calgary Hitmen in the first round of the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft (20th overall). He recorded an assist in his Giants debut on November 3rd against the Kamloops Blazers.
