WELCOME TO THE 2018-19 WHL SEASON FROM
WHL COMMISSIONER
Calgary, Alta. – Another Western Hockey League season has arrived and we are excited to unveil the latest edition of the world’s premier junior hockey players as they take to the ice with our 22 WHL Clubs throughout Western Canada and the U.S. Pacific Northwest. As we embark on our 53rd WHL season, the WHL Player Experience continues to be the top priority for our WHL member Clubs. Our Clubs are committed to providing our players with the highest standard of development, both on and off the ice. The WHL takes great pride in offering world-class coaching and North America’s most comprehensive WHL Scholarship and education program, along with an extensive series of support services which ensures our players continue their development in a safe and positive environment. Establishing a new record with 382 post-secondary scholarships awarded to WHL graduates this past season, the WHL Scholarship continues to pave a road to an unmatched educational opportunity for WHL alumni as they pursue their academic goals. Of the 382 WHL graduates who accessed their WHL Scholarship, 183 continued their hockey development by playing Canadian University
Ron Robison Commissioner
hockey at the U SPORTS level this past season. The 2018-19 WHL season will feature many special events. With the 2019 NHL Draft set for Vancouver in June, we are excited for the opportunity to showcase what we believe will be one of the strongest NHL Draft classes in WHL history. Not only will these players be on display nightly in WHL markets, fans will have the opportunity to see these standards in Red Deer – a hub for WHL activity in 2019 – at the Sherwin Williams CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in January. Once again, Red Deer will host the WHL Awards and WHL Bantam Draft in May. Meanwhile, Kamloops and Vancouver will host the 2018 CIBC Canada Russia Series in November, as Team WHL takes on the Russian National Team in a preview of the 2019 World Junior Championship. Through the support of major junior hockey’s best fans, our corporate partners, broadcasters and media the WHL is in a position to provide our players with a world-class experience. Your passion and loyalty to the WHL and our 22 member Clubs is greatly appreciated. The 2018-19 WHL season promises to be exciting as our Clubs battle for a playoff berth and opportunity to capture the Ed Chynoweth Cup. I trust you will once again love cheering on your favourite WHL Club with an incredible group of top prospects on full display as they pursue their dreams, both on and off the ice.

Welcome to Kent …and to the 2018-19 Seattle Thunderbirds season! We are thrilled to have you and your family join us for another exciting season with the Seattle Thunderbirds. The year’s home opener will be at accesso ShoWare Center on Saturday, September 22 as the T-Birds start their bid to return to the WHL Finals for the third time in four seasons. This will be an exciting season under the direction of head coach Matt O’Dette, now in his second season. There will be several new faces this year, but also many key returners. Jarret Tyszka and Reece Harsch will anchor the blue line for the T-Birds this season. Tyszka was recently at Montreal Canadiens Development Camp while Harsch was at the Las Vegas Golden Knights Development Camp. Nolan Volcan, Zack Andrusiak and Noah Philp return to the lead the T-Birds’ offense. All three players had over 50 points last season. Matthew Wedman, the hero of the 2016 Western Conference Championship, also returns and will add a lot of scoring punch to this year’s team. Watch out for some rookies to have an impact this season, including forward Andrej Kukuca from the Czech Republic and defenseman Simon Kubicek from Slovakia, both taken in the Import Draft. Payton Mount on offense and Tyrel Bauer on defense will play their rookie season with the T-Birds. Mount was selected first and Bauer second by the team in the 2017 Bantam Draft. Also, returning this year is the T-Birds’ popular two-for-Tuesday promotion, where fans can enjoy two-forone tickets and beer along with $2 concession specials. If you are new to hockey, this is a great way to get the family involved on a budget. Pub Nights, Turkey Shoot and Ham Shoot are also great games to check out, and you don’t want to miss the second annual Weiner Dog Races and the Teddy Bear Toss this season. If you’re new to accesso ShoWare Center, you should know we are incredibly proud of this 10-year-old state-of-the-art arena. With 6,125 seats, 20 suites and Heritage Club seating, the arena offers unsurpassed hockey sightlines throughout. While you’re in town, you and your family can grab a bite at Kent Station, a contemporary, urban shopping village with a variety of dining options for pre- and post-game gatherings. You will also enjoy the charm of historic downtown Kent, where you’ll find more entertainment and dining choices. No matter what you choose, you’ll have even more reasons to come back to Kent. Go Birds!

Seattle Thunderbirds vs. Vancouver Giants
Tuesday, March 12
Previous Game…The T-Birds defeated the Everett Silvertips 2-1 Saturday at accesso ShoWare Center. Roddy Ross had 46 saves and Nolan Volcan had two goals. Robbie Holmes scored for Everett and Dustin Wolf had 19 saves. Playoff Positioning…The T-Birds have a 28-28-6-2 record and are seven points ahead the Kamloops Blazers (25-32-52) in the second wild card playoff spot in the Western Conference. The T-Birds are in fifth in the US Division, nine points behind the Tri-City Americans who are 34-26-4-1, and have a game in hand on the Americans, but cannot catch them for fourth place in the Division. Magic Number…The T-Birds Magic Number to clinch a playoff spot is two points. Any combination of T-Birds wins and the Kamloops Blazers not getting points equal to two would clinch the second wild card playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Blazers host the Spokane Chiefs Tuesday night. Possible Playoff Opponent…If the T-Birds clinch a playoff spot they will play either the Everett Silvertips or Vancouver Giants in the first round of the playoffs. The T-Birds would be the road team in any first round playoff series. Both the Silvertips and Giants are battling for first overall in the Western Conference and going into Tuesday’s night game have identical 46-15-2-2 records. Remaining Schedule…The T-Birds have three games remaining this season. After the Giants the T-Birds travel to TriCity on March 13. They end the season with a home-and-home series against the Portland Winterhawks on March 16 at home and March 17 on the road. Second Half Surge…The T-Birds are 17-9-2-3 in January, February and March. The T-Birds were 11-19-4-0 in September, October, November and December. Kai Uchacz Joins T-Birds…Center Kai Uchacz has been called up by the T-Birds and will remain with the team for the rest of the season. Uchacz, from De Winton, Alberta, was the T-Birds first round selection, 10th overall, in the 2018 Bantam Draft. Uchacz has played three games with the T-Birds this season. Uchacz played with the Okotoks Oilers in the AMHL this season and had 16 goals and 15 assists for 31 points in 28 games. The Oilers season has ended which allows him to join the T-Birds. NHL Central Scouting Midterm Rankings…Three Seattle Thunderbirds are listed on the NHL Central Scouting Midterm Rankings for the 2019 NHL Draft scheduled for June 21 and June 22 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Defenseman Jake Lee is ranked number 78. Lee, born July 13, 2001, was the T-Birds first round selection, and the 18th overall pick, in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft. This season Lee has played 63 games and has three goals and 21 assists for 24 points. In his rookie year last season Lee played in 64 games and had four goals and six assists for 10 points with 69 penalty minutes. Lee received a ‘B’ rating from NHL Central Scouting in the November Players To Watch List, indicating he could be a potential a second or third round NHL draft candidate.
