WHL COMMISSIONER Last year, during the Western Hockey League’s 50th season, we were privileged to reflect on our rich history and honour the many distinguished builders and alumni who have helped to make the WHL the finest junior hockey league in the world today. As we open the 2016-17 WHL season, the same ideals that fostered the growth our great League still serve as its foundation – a commitment to providing our players with a world class experience from both a hockey and education standpoint. The WHL and our 22 member Clubs take great pride in providing our players with the best possible environment in which to succeed both on and off the ice. On the ice, our high calibre of coaching and arena facilities continue to offer an ideal setting to grow and develop as a player. Off the ice, the WHL Scholarship remains the most comprehensive hockey scholarship in North America with a WHL record of over 350 graduates utilizing their WHL Scholarship at post-secondary institutions across the continent last year alone, representing an investment of over $2 million by WHL Club ownership.

The WHL Scholarship is one of many commitments WHL Club ownership makes to ensure the success of our players. The WHL Players First support services program expanded last year with the addition of a League-wide WHL Security Network and Police Impact Program which engages local police officers in a liaison capacity with all of our teams to ensure our players are in a safe and respectful environment at all times. This year, the WHL has partnered with the Canadian Mental Health Association to launch the Talk Today program with all of our WHL member Clubs. Talk Today is a proven and important mental health initiative that will help our players and team staff identify and address mental health issues. The development opportunities the WHL provides on the ice and the assistance offered off the ice to our players through the WHL Scholarship and WHL Players First support services programs would not be possible without the support of our great fans as well as our corporate partners, broadcasters and media. The 2016-17 WHL season promises to be another highly entertaining campaign and we look forward to supporting our players and all of our WHL Clubs as they continue to set the standard for development both on and off the ice.

The Western Hockey League started with just seven teams based in the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta in 1966. The WHL now has representation in all four Western Canadian provinces and the U.S. states of Oregon and Washington. The WHL now consists of 22 member Clubs with 17 based in Canadian markets and five in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. The WHL is a member of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) whose membership is comprised of three major junior hockey leagues: the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Western Hockey League (WHL). At the conclusion of each league's playoffs, the CHL hosts the MasterCard Memorial Cup, a national championship tournament involving each of the three league champions and the tournament host. The WHL is regarded as one of the finest development leagues in the world today. Each season the WHL is one of the top leagues from which players are selected from in the NHL Draft. Currently over 20% of all NHL players are graduates of the WHL. The WHL is also a leading provider of post-secondary scholarships with over 325 scholarships awarded each year to current and graduate WHL players, more than any other league in North America.
Welcome to Kent …and to the Western Conference Champion Seattle Thunderbirds 2016-2017 season as the T-Birds pursue a return to the WHL Championship! This season starts with an exciting celebration at the first home game of the season as the T-Birds will raise a U.S. Division Champions Banner and a Western Conference Champions Banner. Ethan Bear, Keegan Kolesar and Scott Eansor, leading scorers for the T-Birds last season, return this year as the T-Birds defend their Western Conference Championship. Also returning are Nolan Volcan, Donovan Neuls, Alexander True, Turner Ottenbreit and the hero of Game 4 of the Western Conference Championship, Matthew Wedman. Watch for new Finnish forward Sami Moilanen, who the T-Birds selected in the annual Import Draft, and center Elijah Brown, the 2015 first overall Bantam Draft pick, to do big things. Returning this year is the T-Birds’ popular 2-for-Tuesday promotion, where fans can enjoy 2-for-1 tickets along with $2 concession specials! The very popular Pub Nights, Turkey Shoot and Ham Shoot are always fun nights. If you’re a new visitor to ShoWare Center, you should know we are very proud of this 8 year-old state-ofthe-art arena. The 6,125 seats, 20 suites, and incredible Heritage Club seating section have unmatched hockey sightlines throughout. While you’re in town, grab a bite at Kent Station, a contemporary, open air urban village with a variety of options for pre and post-game gatherings, but don’t leave your car there during an event as they will be towed. Walk a couple blocks south of the Center to discover the charm of historic downtown Kent where even more entertainment and dining choices await you. Go Birds!

Last Game…The T-Birds defeated the Kelowna Rockets 5-3 Saturday night at ShoWare Center. Ryan Gropp had a hat trick and Keegan Kolesar and Ethan Bear scored a goal each. Mathew Barzal had four assists. Kolesar had two assists. Rylan Toth had 36 saves. Kyle Topping, Reid Gardiner and Dillon Dube had goals for the Rockets. Michael Herringer had 19 saves. US Division Standings…The T-Birds are currently 39-18-3-2 and in second place in the US Division standings. They are three points behind the first-place Everett Silvertips with the Silvertips having two games in hand. The T-Birds are four points ahead of the Tri-City Americans, in the US Division, with two games in hand. Stankowski Returns…Goalie Carl Stankowski returned to the lineup Friday against Tri-City. He had missed the previous 40 games with a lower body injury. Volcan Returns…Left wing Nolan Volcan returned to the lineup Friday against Tri-City. He had missed the previous seven games with a lower body injury. Volcan has 13 goals and 23 assists for 36 points in 52 games. Bear Has Franchise Record For Goals Scored By A Defenseman…Defenseman Ethan Bear set the franchise record for goals scored by a defenseman on February 13 in Kelowna when he scored the T-Birds first goal of the game, which was the 59th goal of his T-Bird career. Bear passed Shea Theodore who had 58 goals and 154 assists for 212 points in 257 career games in four seasons with the T-Birds from 2010-11 to 2014-15. Bear has 64 goals and 123 assists for 187 career points in his four seasons with the T-Birds. Bear is tied with behind Craig Channel for second place and 25 points behind Theodore for first in career points by a defenseman. He is in fourth in career assists by a defenseman. Bear Named WHL Player of the Week…On Monday the WHL named defenseman Ethan Bear the WHL Player of the Week for the week ending February 19, 2017. Bear registered 10 points (4G-6A) in five games to help the T-Birds go 3-20-0 this past week. Bear sits second among all WHL defensemen and third among all Thunderbirds with 63 points (25G38A) in 59 games. This is the second consecutive week a Thunderbird has earned WHL Player of the Week honors. Mathew Barzal was previously named WHL Player of the Week for the week ending February 12, 2017. 21 of 26…The T-Birds are 21-4-0-1 in their last 26 games. Home Cooking…The T-Birds have a 13-game win streak at ShoWare Center. Home Vs. Road…The T-Birds are 22-7-0-1 at ShoWare Center and 17-11-3-1 on the road this season. T-Birds In January and February…The T-Birds were 11-1-0-0 in January. They had a 7-0-0-0 home record and a 4-1-00 road record in January. The T-Birds are 9-3-0-1 in February breaking down to 6-0-0-0 at home and 3-3-0-1 on the road. Streaking Birds…Ethan Bear has a 11-game point streak with eight goals and 13 assists in the last 11 games…Keegan Kolesar has an nine-game point streak with nine goals and 11 assists in the last 10 games. Donny To 200…Donovan Neuls played in his 200th game as a T-Bird against the Winterhawks last Sunday. Neuls has played 202 games in three seasons with the T-Birds. He has 34 goals and 60 assists for 94 points in those 202 games.
Toth Named Goaltender of the Month…The Western Hockey League announced February 1 goaltender Rylan Toth was named the Vaughn WHL Goaltender of the Month for January. Toth maintained a record of 10-1-0-0 during the month of January, with a stellar 2.05 goals-against average and .923 save percentage. In 11 appearances during the month of January, Toth surrendered two goals or fewer on six occasions, earning third star honors twice. Taking to the blue paint for 11 of his team’s 12 contests in the month of January, Toth was named WHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending January 22, 2017, after going 2-1-0-0 with a 1.01 GAA and .944 SV%. 3 Ranked in NHL Central Scouting Midterm Rankings…Three Seattle Thunderbirds are ranked in the NHL Central Scouting Midterm Rankings of North American Skaters eligible for the 2017 NHL Draft released Wednesday. Defenseman Jarret Tyszka is ranked number 33 by NHL Central Scouting. This season Tyszka has six goals and 18 assists for 24 points in 52 games. Right wing Sami Moilanen is ranked number 93 in the Midterm Rankings. Moilanen has 18 goals and 18 assists for 36 points in 60 games. Center Matthew Wedman is ranked number 134 in the Midterm Rankings. Wedman has four goals and 13 assists for 17 points in 40 games this season. Barzal Back From World Juniors...Since returning from the World Junior Championship Mathew Barzal has six goals and 41 assists for 47 points in 23 games. Barzal has a goal and 28 assists in the last 12 games…Barzal has eight goals and 59 assists for 67 points in 36 games this season. The T-Birds are 27-6-2-1 when Barzal is in the lineup. Barzal 3rd in Career Assists…Mathew Barzal is in third place in T-Birds history in career assists with 205. Glen Goodall (290) and Victor Gervais (237) are in first and second place in team history in career assists. Barzal is 7th in team history in career points. He has 61 goals and 205 assists for 267 points in 197 games. He passed Error Rausse (127-139-266) for seventh place with four assists against for Kelowna Rockets on February 25. Dustin Johner is sixth with 272 points (120-152-272). Lindsay Vallis is in fifth place in team history with 285 points on 127 goals and 158 assists. Gropp Going… Ryan Gropp had a team high 16-game point snapped in the shootout win over Portland Sunday. Gropp had 14 goals and 21 assists in the 16-game streak. The 16-game point streak included an eight-game goal streak. Gropp has 25 goals and 32 assists for 55 points in the last 41 games and is first on the team in scoring with 28 goals and 42 assists for 70 points. Gropp has 110 goals in his T-Birds career putting him in ninth place all time in goals scored. Lindsay Vallis and Errol Rouse are tied fifth on the list with 127 goals. Bear From The Blue Line…Ethan Bear has 16 goals and 25 assists in the last 31 games and is third on the team in scoring. He has 26 goals and 39 assists for 65 points. Bear’s 25 goals are a career high in a season for the defenseman. He has tied his career high in points from last season when he had 19 goals and 46 assists for 65 points. Keegs Converting…Keegan Kolesar has 16 goals and 22 assists for 38 points in the last 23 games. He has 21 goals and 26 assists for 47 points in 44 games and is fourth on the team in scoring. Barzal Six Point Night…Mathew Barzal had a goal and five assists Saturday, February 11, against the Portland Winterhawks. This is the most points by a T-Bird this season and Barzal’s first six-point game in his WHL career. High Shots…The 58 shots on goal by the T-Birds on January 31 against the Kamloops Blazers is the most shots by the T-Birds in a game this season. The previous season high was 55 on November 30 at Kamloops. Fastest Goal To Start…The goal by Nolan Volcan 43 seconds into the game against the Tri-City Americans November 25 is the fastest goal by a T-Bird to start a game this season.
