WHL COMMISSIONER Last year, during the Western Hockey League’s 50th season, we were privileged to reflect on our rich history and honour the many distinguished builders and alumni who have helped to make the WHL the finest junior hockey league in the world today. As we open the 2016-17 WHL season, the same ideals that fostered the growth our great League still serve as its foundation – a commitment to providing our players with a world class experience from both a hockey and education standpoint. The WHL and our 22 member Clubs take great pride in providing our players with the best possible environment in which to succeed both on and off the ice. On the ice, our high calibre of coaching and arena facilities continue to offer an ideal setting to grow and develop as a player. Off the ice, the WHL Scholarship remains the most comprehensive hockey scholarship in North America with a WHL record of over 350 graduates utilizing their WHL Scholarship at post-secondary institutions across the continent last year alone, representing an investment of over $2 million by WHL Club ownership.

The WHL Scholarship is one of many commitments WHL Club ownership makes to ensure the success of our players. The WHL Players First support services program expanded last year with the addition of a League-wide WHL Security Network and Police Impact Program which engages local police officers in a liaison capacity with all of our teams to ensure our players are in a safe and respectful environment at all times. This year, the WHL has partnered with the Canadian Mental Health Association to launch the Talk Today program with all of our WHL member Clubs. Talk Today is a proven and important mental health initiative that will help our players and team staff identify and address mental health issues. The development opportunities the WHL provides on the ice and the assistance offered off the ice to our players through the WHL Scholarship and WHL Players First support services programs would not be possible without the support of our great fans as well as our corporate partners, broadcasters and media. The 2016-17 WHL season promises to be another highly entertaining campaign and we look forward to supporting our players and all of our WHL Clubs as they continue to set the standard for development both on and off the ice.

The Western Hockey League started with just seven teams based in the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta in 1966. The WHL now has representation in all four Western Canadian provinces and the U.S. states of Oregon and Washington. The WHL now consists of 22 member Clubs with 17 based in Canadian markets and five in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. The WHL is a member of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) whose membership is comprised of three major junior hockey leagues: the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Western Hockey League (WHL). At the conclusion of each league's playoffs, the CHL hosts the MasterCard Memorial Cup, a national championship tournament involving each of the three league champions and the tournament host. The WHL is regarded as one of the finest development leagues in the world today. Each season the WHL is one of the top leagues from which players are selected from in the NHL Draft. Currently over 20% of all NHL players are graduates of the WHL. The WHL is also a leading provider of post-secondary scholarships with over 325 scholarships awarded each year to current and graduate WHL players, more than any other league in North America.
Welcome to Kent …and to the Western Conference Champion Seattle Thunderbirds 2016-2017 season as the T-Birds pursue a return to the WHL Championship! This season starts with an exciting celebration at the first home game of the season as the T-Birds will raise a U.S. Division Champions Banner and a Western Conference Champions Banner. Ethan Bear, Keegan Kolesar and Scott Eansor, leading scorers for the T-Birds last season, return this year as the T-Birds defend their Western Conference Championship. Also returning are Nolan Volcan, Donovan Neuls, Alexander True, Turner Ottenbreit and the hero of Game 4 of the Western Conference Championship, Matthew Wedman. Watch for new Finnish forward Sami Moilanen, who the T-Birds selected in the annual Import Draft, and center Elijah Brown, the 2015 first overall Bantam Draft pick, to do big things. Returning this year is the T-Birds’ popular 2-for-Tuesday promotion, where fans can enjoy 2-for-1 tickets along with $2 concession specials! The very popular Pub Nights, Turkey Shoot and Ham Shoot are always fun nights. If you’re a new visitor to ShoWare Center, you should know we are very proud of this 8 year-old state-ofthe-art arena. The 6,125 seats, 20 suites, and incredible Heritage Club seating section have unmatched hockey sightlines throughout. While you’re in town, grab a bite at Kent Station, a contemporary, open air urban village with a variety of options for pre and post-game gatherings, but don’t leave your car there during an event as they will be towed. Walk a couple blocks south of the Center to discover the charm of historic downtown Kent where even more entertainment and dining choices await you. Go Birds!

Last Game…The Kelowna Rockets defeated the T-Birds 6-3 Monday in Kelowna. Ethan Bear, Keegan Kolesar and Ryan Gropp scored in the loss. Bear and Mathew Barzal each had two assists. Matt Berlin had 26 saves. Calvin Thurkauf had two goals for the Rockets and Nick Merkley, Carsen Twarynski, Reid Gardiner and Leif Mattson had goals. Michael Herring made 31 saves for the Rockets. T-Birds Sign Cody Savey… Seattle Thunderbirds general manager Russ Farwell announced Monday forward Cody Savey has signed a WHL Standard Player Agreement with the team. Savey, from Campbell River, British Columbia, is playing this season with the West Vancouver Academy Elite 15s in the CSSHL league. Savey has 12 goals and 14 assists for 26 points with 62 penalty minutes in 25 games. Savey is 6’1 and 209 pounds and is a 2001 birth year. He made his T-Bird debut against the Kelowna Rockets February 13. Savey is wearing #15 for the T-Birds. US Division Standings…The T-Birds are currently 35-16-3-2 and in first place in the US Division standings. They are one point ahead the second-place Everett Silvertips, who have one game in hand. The T-Birds are 10 points ahead of the third-place Tri-City Americans with two games in hand. The T-Birds are in second place in the Western Conference one point ahead of the Silvertips and three points behind the Prince George Cougars with two games in hand. 17 of 20…The T-Birds are 17-2-0-1 in their last 20 games. Home Cooking…The T-Birds have a 10-game win streak at ShoWare Center. Home Vs. Road…The T-Birds are 19-7-0-1 at ShoWare Center and 16-9-3-1 on the road this season. Toth Named Goaltender of the Month…The Western Hockey League announced February 1 goaltender Rylan Toth was named the Vaughn WHL Goaltender of the Month for January. Toth, a 20-year-old product of Saskatoon, SK, maintained a record of 10-1-0-0 during the month of January, with a stellar 2.05 goals-against average and .923 save percentage. Jarret Tyszka is ranked number 33 by NHL Central Scouting. This season Tyszka has five goals and 16 assists for 21 points in 47 games. Tyszka was the T-Birds first round selection in the 2014 Bantam Draft. Right wing Sami Moilanen is ranked number 93 in the Midterm Rankings. Moilanen is sixth on the team in scoring with 17 goals and 17 assists for 34 points in 54 games. Moilanen, from Sipoo, Finland, was the T-Birds first round selection in the 2016 CHL Import Draft. Center Matthew Wedman is ranked number 134 in the Midterm Rankings. Wedman has four goals and 13 assists for 17 points in 40 games this season. Wedman was the T-Birds second round selection in the 2014 Bantam Draft. Top 4 Penalty Killing Unit…The T-Birds are fourth in the WHL in penalty killing. They have 82.4% success rate having only given up 40 goals on 227 chances. The Everett Silvertips are first in the league with an 85.4% success rate. Barzal Back From World Juniors...Since returning from the World Junior Championship Mathew Barzal has six goals and 30 assists for 34 points in 17 games. Barzal has eight goals and 48 assists for 56 points in 30 games this season. The T-Birds are 23-4-2-1 when Barzal is in the lineup. Barzal 3rd in Career Assists…Mathew Barzal is in third place in T-Birds history in career assists with 194. Glen Goodall (290) and Victor Gervais (237) are in first and second place in team history in career assists. Barzal is 9th in team history in career points. He has 61 goals and 194 assists for 255 points in 191 games. Chris Wells is eighth with 258 points (106-152-258), Error Rausse is seventh with 266 points (127-139-266), and Dustin Johner is sixth with 272 points (120152-272). Lindsay Vallis is in fifth place in team history with 285 points on 127 goals and 158 assists. Gropp Going…Ryan Gropp has 20 goals and 25 assists for 45 points in the last 35 games and is first on the team in scoring with 23 goals and 35 assists for 58 points. He currently has a 13-game point streak which is the longest point streak by a T-Bird this season, as well as a seven-game goal streak. He had a nine-game points streak earlier this season. Gropp has 105 goals in his T-Birds career putting him in 11th place all time in goals scored by a T-Bird. Chris Wells is 10th on the list with 106 goals and Lindsay Vallis and Errol Rouse are tied fifth on the list with 127 goals. Bear From The Blue Line…Ethan Bear has 12 goals and 19 assists in the last 25 games and is third on the team in scoring. He has 22 goals and 33 assists for 55 points. Bear’s 22 goals are a career high in a season for the defenseman. Keegs Converting…Keegan Kolesar has 12 goals and 17 assists for 28 points in the last 18 games. He has 17 goals and 21 assists for 38 points in 39 games and is fourth on the team in scoring. Eansor Fourth In Scoring…Scott Eansor is fifth on team in scoring with 37 points on 18 goals and 19 assists in 38 games. Eansor has 10 goals and nine assists in the last 20 games. Eansor has passed his goal total of 14 from last season, which was a career high. He needs three more goals to register 50 career goals. Eansor had the T-Birds first hat trick of the season when he scored three goals at Moose Jaw in a 5-1 win on November 5. Eansor has scored two shorthanded goals this season. Career High For Ottenbreit…Defenseman Turner Ottenbreit set a career high for points January 15 when he had an assist against Spokane in a 6-4 win. Ottenbreit has five goals and 19 assists for 24 points, seven more points than he had last season. This is a new career high in assists and points for the defenseman. Ottenbreit had five goals and 11 assists in the 2015-16 season. Fastest Goal To Start…The goal by Nolan Volcan 43 seconds into the game against the Tri-City Americans November 25 is the fastest goal by a T-Bird to start a game this season.
