ABOUT ME Since founding Water Design in 2012 in Taipei, Taiwan, Sebastian has built a practice that provides unique, creative and thoughtful ideas for each client. CIELO HOTEL THE HUMMINGBIRDS FLY IN OAKLAND
The hotel is located at 1540 Broadway Oakland. The Cielo named from the word “sky� in Spanish. The hotel will provide a place where the guests are interconnected with their space in harmony, and the hotel habitat provides the basic needs for them to thrive but in a peaceful and playful environment. Much like what Lake Merrit does for the hummingbirds, the hotel would remain in the minds of the travelers as an oasis to go back to when they return to the city. 1
CONCEPT The concept is inspired by hummingbirds and their flying patterns, transforming those into the shapes and furnishings of the hotel.

DEVELOPMENT The hotel “CIELO” would mimic the relationship of hummingbird and the spaces, where provide delightful experiences for users visiting Oakland. The design will deliver enjoyable and playful spaces where nourishment and relaxation are provided without giving up the basic connectivity and working space needs required to thrive in today’s competitive business world. Much like what Lake Merrit does for the hummingbirds, the hotel would remain in the minds of the travelers as an oasis to go back to when they return to the city. The spaces will be designed to appeal to the five senses through organic lines and shapes, cohesive colors and textures inspired by Oakland, inter changeable lights with the time and spaced-infused aromas that would create a unique, timeless and beautiful experience where guests can go from timeless bliss to hectic activities at their own speed.

The future building is a concrete construction. There are two stairs. One is located near the front door, and the other is located the end of building. To comply with code at court yard which has egress door to allow people to escape in the event of a fire. All the walls are fire-rated from 1 hour to 2 hours. OPPORTUNITY The building as a courtyard located in the center. The building can be potential used water reclaimed system. The roof has potential to develop a sky bar. Diversity activities and spaces can combine together.

SUN The natural light will come into the windows from the courtyard and front door. The higher the floor will gain more lights. Quality of exterior views is better when the floor gets higher. Opposite graphic shows the lights and the views.

The hotel takes the courtyard to provide the natural view, and it separates activities and quiet areas. The front of the level providing a playful and enjoyable common area where can allow guests to socialize. The front desks at the lobby create two sides to provide services in each direction. Ballrooms are at the back of the hotel which is adjacency to the courtyard. It allows embracing the views and privacy to the space when special events accur.

The second floor is continuing the idea from the first floor. At the front of the area is the health club where the guests can enjoy the exercise, training, yoga and sauna. The center of the second floor is a relaxing area with an extra patio to suggest a comfort atmosphere. All the conference rooms are located at the back of the floor.

DOMUN REFUGEE CENTER
Pacific Northwest Multicultural Community Services (PNMCS), a non-profit organization which specializes in assisting resettlement of refugees with housing and social services, has a new project at Rose City Park in Portland, Oregon. The project’s goal is to create a community center that welcomes immigrants and provides them with tools necessary for them to transition towards life in a new city. 13
CONCEPT The Egg concept for this project captures the essence of life. The space is designed to make the users step forward into the next chapter of their life. The design will convey vitality, movement and connection. Life in the egg will revitalize the refugees, powering them into a new life and renewing their thirst for a fulfilling and happy life.

The design focuses on ambiance. All the public spaces with higher noise levels use open space without walls on first floor. Spaces which require better noise insulation are located on the second floor with more enclosed rooms.

FIRST FLOOR FINISHES AND ELEVATIONS The consideration of design was natural lighting, because it gives energy to both plants and humans. By placing public spaces on the east and south sides utilizing curtains to gain as much natural lighting as possible. The natural light is gentler to the north, then designated rooms on that side of the building for offices and classrooms. One of the main designs is opened the second floor and added a glass dome in order to allow more light into the lobby.

LOBBY AND CAFÉ The concept started with my initial research on birds showed a parallel between cell behavior in the egg and how people interacted with one another. Additional research showed the symbiotic relationship of organs in a bird’s body, which correlated to the way I wanted to design each space, as they would complement each other. By sketching the thoughts of the relationship of cells in order to gather the ideas and apply to the spaces.

ACCOMPLISHED INTERIOR PROJECTS
All the projects are a journey and each has their own story. When I design, it comes straight from my heart so it goes against the grain to sit down and analyze what I have done and why. The experience of running my own studio has helped me find ways of communicating my ideas and made me far more aware of why one idea works brilliantly and another doesn’t, why some clients insist on their ideas and how to mix ideals and turning their dream home into reality. Those clients are those who love their homes and pour their hearts into them. 23
XING YI DISTRICT TAIPEI - SON
This project required two side by side apartments. The original layout was one single unit and the client’s desire was to redesign and divide it into two independent homes. The challenge of the project was to meet city codes as well as to create narrowing layouts for both of the units, each with different tone and texture. The apartments were to reflect the client’s son and daughter’s personalities. In Taiwanese tradition, fortunate parents will gift a home to their adulating children.

Each apartment adds it’s own personality. The Son’s unit had to reflect his taste for pop music, in opposition to the daughter’s unit and her love for the waltz. Her love for the flower was the initial point of reference. We selected the above flower arrangement for inspiration and to develop her own color scheme reflecting her natural elegance.

CUSTOMIZED DESIGNS Up : The showcase is combined the wine and regular storage together. It suggests an elegant atmosphere, also provides its functions to the dinning area. Low : In Taiwan, clients consider of the Feng-Shui most of the time.The door of the master bedroom is facing to the entrance. According to the rule of Feng-Shui, it will cause health and career problems to people who live there. Also, another challenge is the limitation of the space where we need to open up the dining area to share with the living room. After meeting the person who is specialize on Feng-Shui. The solution of it is to design a hidden door which mix with the wall. Considering all the design challenges. The solution of it is to design whole custom made panel from the end of left to the right. The pendant light above the dining table is a focal point and defines the area.

Up-Right : The design is a modern and sophisticated space where meet the characteristic of clients. Low-Left : Elevation shows the idea to the client of Chinese screen. The screen combined three hidden doors in order to meet the desire of Feng-Shui. Low-Right : The client is a professor who is teaching Chinese culture in the university. The design goal was to brings back the traditional screens that can meet Feng-Shui and her aesthetic personality.
