ABOUT ME

Sebastian is a talented and seasoned designer who seeks to create friendly environments for everyone. His past work comprised a 100% affordable Educator Housing, market-rate high-rised rental apartments, new childcare and family center, muti-family residential housing projects and a Soup Kitchen for the homeless. Philosophically, he has a passion to bring quality design to those who may not usually benefit from this. Technically, he brings his Taiwanese experiences to his work here in the US.

Shirley Chisholm Village Educator Housing is located in San Francisco. The project is led by BAR Architects, whose mission is to build the future of affordable housing, a challenging task in the Bay Area. The goal is to build a 100% affordable multifamily housing, with will include 135 dwelling units. The building has requirements of a 10% of accessible units and a 4% of communication units.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The diagram shows the proposed residential building and the relationship with its surrounding buildings. The project is a 4 and 5-story building, including 165,300 SF residential and 1,800 SF of non-residential gross area. The building will house studios and 1, 2 and 3-bedroom apartments. Residential amenities are located on the ground floor and include two courtyards, private outdoor spaces, fitness room, workspaces and a computer lab. 43RDAVE.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The diagram shows the proposed residential building. The project comprises a 5 and 7-story low-rise buildings on the north, and the 22-stories tower to the south. The Tidal House will have 9 Live Work two-bedrooms, 15 studios, 93 one-bedrooms, 16 junior one-bedrooms, 117 two-bedrooms, and two three-bedroom units all in varying sizes.

Levels 1 and 2 include a 1,881 SF cafe space, entry lobby, residents amenities, live/work units, dog wash, bike room, building services such as trash room, mechanical rooms and electrical rooms, a parking garage wiht triple-high stackers with pits, leasing offices and fitness amenities. Levels 3-22 at the tower are residential units, and a 3,400 courtyard over the parking garage, as well as amenity spaces on level 7 and the resident lounge that opens to a common roof deck.

Treasure Island C2.4 is using clash detection, which the technique of identifying if, where, or how two parts of the building interfere with one another. This required extreme accuracy building the Revit model and families, such as built-in banquette, wet bar, reception and sudare ceiling screens that are shown below on the level 1 plans and RCPs. INTERIOR DESIGN

TAIPEI PROJECTS TAIWAN

Each project is a journey with its own story. When I design, my process starts with understanding my client’s goals and aspirations while balancing the reality of their budgets and needs. The experience of running my own Design Studio for 6 years has helped me to find two ways of communicating design solutions to clients and the design team. This is critical to help them visualize how some ideas would work brilliantly while others, even if they insist in on them, would not deliver to their expectations.

XING YI DISTRICT TAIPEI - SON

In this project, the clients had a single unit and the desire to converting it into two side by side independent homes to gift to their son and daughter. The challenge of the project was to meet city codes as well as to create spacious living quarters for both of the units out of very narrow layouts; each with different design tones and textures. The apartments aimed at reflecting the client’s son and daughter’s personalities.

XING YI DISTRICT TAIPEI -DAUGHTER

The son’s unit had to reflect his taste in pop music, in opposition to the daughter’s unit and her love for classical music. In the case of the daughter’s apartment, the initial point of reference and design inspiration was the flower arrangement on the picture to the right. The client’s desire was also to have common design elements in both apartments, such as the sofa and other furniture elements.

CUSTOMIZED DESIGNS

Up : This showcase combines regular storage and a wine cellar together. It creates an elegant atmosphere while providing functionality to the dinning area.

Low : In Taiwan, clients consider Feng-Shui in their design approach often. The door of the master bedroom is facing the entrance. According to the rules of Feng-Shui, this will cause health and career problems to people who live there. Also, another challenge is the limitation of the space where we need to open up the dining area to share with the living room. After consulting with a Feng-Shui practitioner, the solution was to design a hidden door that is part of wall paneling.

Low-Left : Elevation and finishes showcasing the design of the Chinese screens combining three hidden doors in order to meet Feng-Shui’s practice. The client was a professor teaching Chinese culture at the university in Taiwan who desired to bring her traditional culture into her home.

SCHOOL PROJECT

DOMUN REFUGEE CENTER

The concept behind this project is organic rebirth. The project is named Ovum because this idea is based on the cycle of life. A bird lays an egg, which through growth and nourishment, hatches a newborn chick. My initial research on birds showed a parallel between the cycle of life in nature and how people interacted with one another. Additional research showed the symbiotic relationship of organs in a bird’s body, which correlated to the way I wanted to design each space, as they would complement each other.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

The egg-shaped concept for this project, the Ovum, captures the essence of life. The design represents the user’s progression as they journey into the next chapter of their lives. The structure conveys vitality, movement as well as connection and will appeal to refugees and locals while rekindling their enthusiasm for the future.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

The first aspect of my design focuses on the ambience. All the public spaces with higher noise levels use open space without walls on first floor. Spaces which require better noise insulation are located on the second floor with more enclosed rooms. The second focal point of my design is the water, because it is an essential element that allows organisms to grow. As Portland has a high annual rainfall, I implemented a reclaimed water system to reuse the rainwater.

SPATIAL PLANING

Each part of the building is designed to meet functional needs. The first floor provides all spaces for communal activities, encouraging residents to interact with each other.

The second floor is designed to provide private spaces such as offices for counseling and job services, a computer lab and training center and others.

BUILDING ELEVATION AND FINISHES

Natural lighting and its use throughout the project was a key design element. Curtain walls were placed on the east and south sides to gain as much natural light as possible. Office and classrooms were situated on the north of the building where the lighting is gentler. A key design element is an open second floor and a needed a glass dome in order to allow more light to flow into the lobby.

LOBBY AND CAFÉ

A third point of consideration was natural lighting, because it gives energy to both plants and humans. I placed public spaces on the east and south sides utilizing curtains to gain as much natural lighting as possible. The natural light is gentler to the north, so I designated rooms on that side of the building for offices and classrooms. I opened the second floor and added a glass dome in order to allow more light into the lobby.

The lobby is a key space for this project. Its focal point resides in the organic circle line from the lobby to the dome’s peak at 34 feet above grade. The lobby has parallels with its egg shape as the ongoing activities of the users within the lobby represents the growth and transformation from an embryo to a baby chick.

RECEPTION AT SECOND FLOOR

The final point of emphasis for this project is the aesthetic design. The organic lines within the space are designed to accentuate the concept of liveliness. The lines represent the flow of the energy and that makes the community center seems more alive. Real plants are used in the trims and walls, to represent the idea of the symbiotic relationship of organs.

On the left hand side of the stairway is the reception desk for the second floor. This space is to function as a small library, concierge lounge and a checkin desk. The design’s purpose is to create a lively feel which draws the attention of people entering the building towards the biophilic trim and upwards along the pendant light to the peak of the dome. This natural progression of looking up through the greenery and light fixture is created so that they will have a feeling of hope and rebirth.

INTERIOR SPACES

These four aspects of the design create a more vibrant refugee center. Because of the biophilic design and spatial planning, the building and users operate together as a unified ecosystem. The project meets the conceptual goal of rebirth and at the same time helps refugees integrate into their new environment.

The residential design also builds on the idea of hope and rebirth. Unlike the areas for public use, which are open and promote interaction, the residential quarters are private and comfortable. Just as the rest of the Refugee Center, all private rooms lead towards a centralized common area for residents to mingle.
