I. Shift Esperanza

Project Typology: Masterplan

Intellectual property of Void OPD S.A.

Location: Nosara, Costa Rica

Shift is rooted in vernacular living. Its architecture is evidently tropical, grounded in the functionality of local constructions but always striving to be visionary, pioneering, and inspired by other parts of the world. In the words of Dominga Pérez, Chorotega leader: “For thousands of years, our ancestors have built civilizations based on the balance and harmony between humans and Mother Nature. Today, we offer our values, our ancestral practices, and knowledge to save the planet.” This is exactly the foundation of the project: the human-nature connections found in conscious living. This conscious living is reflected in an architecture that embraces the essential, through organic and raw materials, open views to the landscape, and the integration of nature into the spaces around the community.

II. Casa Tal

Project Typology: Residential

Intellectual property of Void OPD S.A.

Location: Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

Casa Tal is situated on a hill in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica, with breathtaking views of the ocean and the surrounding jungle. Its design is based on a linear configuration that emphasizes the connection between the interior courtyards and access to the garden. With a strong focus on outdoor living, the house seeks to minimize enclosed spaces and reduces them to the bare minimum. It employs natural ventilation strategies to maintain a fresh and comfortable atmosphere in recreational and relaxation spaces, as well as in all circulation areas. The outdoor kitchen and dining area, balconies, and terraces allow residents to fully enjoy the beauty of the natural surroundings.

Understanding the scale of the project, strategies are sought to reduce its environmental footprint. Spaces are in constant connection to courtyards and gardens that blur the separation between the interior and exterior, allowing for cross-ventilation and temperature regulation. Transit spaces are designed in an open manner, protected by an envelope that characterizes the house. This way, areas of the house that may require air conditioning are minimized, fostering an experience anchored in the natural richness of the site.

IV. Teatro Nuovo

Project Typology: Restoration and Re-Adaptation Location: Sarteano, Italy

Reimagining the Typology of the Ruin By reimagining the composition of the church as a theatrical space and artistic performance as a sacred manifestation, we seek to preserve its intangible value: the sacred atmosphere, despite its change of purpose. The existing ruin is a closed space, solid in its boundaries and proportions. An elevated and independent ‘amphitheater’ element rises from the ground floor and the central space toward the altar, freeing the force of the enclosed ‘void.’ The altar remains the main protagonist in the volume of the new theater, even if its use is no longer religious. The release of space on the ground allows for greater flexibility. Art through performance brings another dimension to the space, much like religion. 16

Regenerative development is a concept born from sustainability and applied to architecture. Through this, the latent potential of a specific place is revealed by connecting it to the system and context in which it exists. It involves the dialogue of various urban events and the reconciliation of different city perspectives.

1 /Permeabilidad/

The building’s re-adaptation aims to transform it into a convergence point for urban events and a catalyst for new experiences and ways of inhabiting San Jose. It is located in district two of the first canton of the capital province, thus holding the potential to connect with the epicenter of urban life. In response to the need for more complex interrelationships in city life, a mixed-use is proposed to adapt to the different temporalities of central districts. The upper levels consist of residential modules in four basic typologies, adaptable and articulable like Tetris pieces for the optimal use of space.

VI. Loop Rurbano

Project Typology: (R)Urban Regeneration Location: Caldera, Costa Rica

Graduation Project Nomination: Honourable Mention

The research project questions the development of tropical coastal regions, especially considering the peri-urban growth patterns in recent decades. It proposes, through a resilient territorial model, an urban and landscape intervention in the peri-urban region composed of Puntarenas, Barranca, Esparza, and Caldera in the Central Pacific. It is based on the needs of its population and the sustainable potential of its natural environment.

At Meso and Micro scales, an intervention is proposed along the coastal axis that runs through Caldera, in the form of a boardwalk park, aiming to promote the local ecosystem’s recovery and the creation of public spaces connected to areas ecological capital. Additionally, the intervention includes new elements in the landscape, such as the market and a local product center, as well as an intermodal station that strengthens the site as a territorial connection point.
