If you’re looking for beauty, you’ll find it in the shimmering palaces. Interested in stimulation: you’ll hold your breath at the chaotic traffic and inhale aromas of sizzling garlic noodles cooked on street stands. While Phnom Penh is a city of 2.2 million people, there’s a small-town feel as well as an emerging sophistication to the place. Wat phnom night market Upper Sisowath Quay The heart of the old French colonial part of the city features architectural wonders galore.

Night Market For a true Cambodian weekend experience head to the night market at the northern end of the riverside, open in the evenings Fri-Sun. Shopping among the stalls and feasting on local fare from the numerous food vendors are on the programme. Sisowath Quay The numerous happy hours make the riverside an ideal place to enjoy a cold drink at the end of the day, with many rooftop bars offering spectacular views. River cruises, departing from the north end of Sisowath Quay, are also a popular way to view the bustling city. Chroy Chang Var Located just over the Japanese Bridge lies the expanding riverside district of Chroy Chang Var. An expansion of the Wat Phnom area, several high-end condominums such as Belle Vue, and well- known restaurants and bars are being developed, offering Phnom Penh residents an alternative more relaxing lifestyle to the bustling city on the other side only 15 minutes’ drive away.

Wat Phnom The eye-catching pagoda at Wat Phnom is unsurprisingly located on top of the small hill at the northern end of the city; as phnom is Khmer for ‘hill’. There many legends about this hill and its relation to the founding of Phnom Penh, with one saying that Lady Penh was a wealthy woman living on the outskirts of the city who built a hill and small temple after fishing a tree from the river containing four Buddha statues.

Le Moon opened four years ago on the roof of the Amanjaya Pancam hotel on the corner of Sisowath Quay. It rapidly became a favorite chill-out bar for both visitors and locals alike. As the sun goes down, there's no beating the stunning night-time vista and the swank lounge atmosphere - or the signature cocktail list - in the city's first real rooftop bar. Nibble on hot and cold tapas – zucchini and goat cheese rolls, chicken satay, mini burgers or vegetarian spring rolls - from the comfort of a stylish lounge as you drift the night away. Open at 5pm. Terrific view, super friendly service, outstanding colourful and tasty cocktails. I love relaxing myself on that rooftop.

Natural aromas such as lotus, jasmine, frangipani and many more will entrance your senses as you browse body scrubs, massage oils, soaps, lip balms & more. central market norodom monivong Central Market When you see a bright yellow circular building festooned with domes and four wings, you’ll know you’ve found the Central Market. This landmark structure in the city was built in 1937 in Art Deco style. Having undergone a $6 million renovation in recent years, it is now the heart of local shopping in Phnom Penh. Before the market came along, however, this area was an unpleasant swamp/ lake, during the French colonial period, the lake was drained and a market was constructed (originally dubbed the “Grand Market”). Open from 5am to 5pm daily, this is a place where you’ll find everything you want – as well as lots of things you don’t want. Electronic equipment, suitcases, food, clothes, photocopied books and kramas (Cambodian sarongs). They’re all there, along with colourful images of street life in Phnom Penh.

French pastry chef Christophe has worked for some Michelinstar restaurants in Swiss and at La Résidence in Phnom Penh, before opening his own store. The Independence Monument marks the edge of Boeung Keng Kang 1, the heart of expat living in Phnom Penh.

Independence Monument The iconic Independence Monument – an Angkorian-style tower which dominates the centre of Sihanouk Blvd – was built in 1958 to commemorate the country’s independence from France. The 20-metre tall monument (Vimean Ekareach) is a symbol for the city and a memorial for Cambodian patriots who died for their country. This is the location of the city’s Independence Day celebrations every year on November 9. A stretch of green leading from this towards the river also now features a new statue of the late King Norodom Sihanouk, which was unveiled in late 2013.

Toul Sleng Russian Market Olympic stadium Phnom Penh contains some significant sites from recent history, including the Olympic Stadium and Toul Slengâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;areas which are steadily becoming more developed.

Russian Market Known to the locals as Toul Tom Poung Market, this location was so-named because it was the market frequented by foreigners during the 1980s when most of those visiting Cambodia were Russian. It is now a colourful, fascinating enclosed market on the south side of Phnom Penh with a large and varied selection of vivid silks, handcarved statues, local handicrafts, jewellery, and souvenirs. The market also offers the largest selection of good quality bootleg VCDs, DVDs and CDs in the city as well as dozens of food vendors frying, boiling and steaming delicious treats all day long. This rabbit warren of stalls may not be the largest market in Phnom Penh, but is one of the most popular for tourists wishing to find clothes, souvenirs and other trinkets to take home.

Toul Sleng â&#x20AC;&#x201C; S21 Tuol Sleng Museum of Genocidal Crimes was used by the Khmer Rouge as a detention and torture centre in the late 1970s. Formerly a high school, the Khmer Rouge renamed the complex "Security Prison 21" (S-21) and turned it into a prison which housed approximately 17,000 people between 1975 and 1979. The buildings are preserved as they were left when the Khmer Rouge were driven out and today houses exhibits, paintings and photographs of many of the victims.

Olympic Stadium The eye-catching Olympic stadium, or National Sports Complex, was designed by Vann Molyvann and completed in 1963 for the aborted SEA Games. Go there at sunset (5:30pm) to watch (or take part in) group aerobics, running and walking activities around the track. 88
