Sara Boyce Website Communication Brief June 6, 2007

Project Summary: State general project information, goals, and relevant background information for the site redesign. This paragraph should be a statement overview of the project as a whole. 1. What is the basic overview of the project? Briefly include background information if relevant. The basic overview of my project is to create a digital travelogue about my trip to Spain and Italy in 2005. During my vacation I kept a daily journal and turned that into a photo journal consisting of photos from the trip and a journal of our daily adventures. I want to create a digital, web version of this photo journal that I created on paper. 2. What is the single purpose (mission statement) of the new site? This website will share my travel experiences with other people in order to spark more interest in traveling abroad, and create relationships with other travelers. 3. What are the secondary goals (objectives) of the new site? On objective is to provide a fun and entertaining website that other users will enjoy reading. Another objective is to create the opportunity for other users to provide comments or ask questions through a comment field. 4. What are the long-term goals? The long-term goals of the website include continuing to add pages about other travels that I embark on. I plan to travel extensively during my life, and wish to share these adventures. Someday I hope to publish a book about my travels. Developing and designing this website starts this process. Audience Profile: Profile the target audience. Provide enough detail to enhance everyone’s understanding of who the audience is. Include some audience demographic information. Use these questions as a guide. Add some of your own. 1. Who is your target audience? Choose a typical visitor and profile in detail. Include occupation, age range, gender, online frequency, online activities, and any other relevant information. Profile more than one if applicable. The target audience will primarily be people who love to travel and who are interested in reading travelogues. They are probably people who purchase books about travel and

possibly write their own travelogues or have their own personal travel websites. Occupations will vary among the audience, but the age range will probably be 18-55. When they are online they probably visit travel websites, adventure travel sites, and travel booking engines. The users of my site are probably well educated and have a great cultural understanding of the world. 2. What is a typical task the visitor might perform on the new site? (For example, register, log on, search for information, buy a specific product, send their email address, and call for more information.) The typical task that a visitor will perform on this website will be reading the travelogue and having the opportunity to leave comments for me (the designer) or other travelers who visit the website. Photos will also be available for viewing. 3. What do these people care about? Why are they interested in the product the site will be offering? What trigger would prompt them to visit the site, and why would they be enticed to return? The visitors care about the world, they care about seeing places that they never thought they would ever see in their lifetime. If I can show them some of the places I have been through journal entries and photographs, they may decide to travel there themselves. They will want to visit the site because they enjoy travel and want to read about other people's adventures abroad, and they will want to return to my site because it will constantly be updated with my future travelogues. Plus, they will develop a relationship with me and other travelers via the comment box, and people who travel love to talk about their travel stories! Perception/Tone/Guidelines: How should your target audience respond to your new online presence? 1. What does the target audience think and feel about the company and the current website? There currently is no website in place for the target audience. 2. What do we want them to think and feel? I want the target audience to have fun and be entertained, but also want them to learn about other parts of the world. I want the audience to feel good about traveling to other countries, and realize that the world is small. 3. How will this new website help achieve this goal? This new website will make the reader laugh by reading some of the things that happened to us on this vacation. It will also teach the reader about the countries I went to and the sites that I saw. A lot of historical and factual information is included in my travelogue,

2

and the "pictures are worth a thousand words". 4. What adjectives can be used to describe the way the website and the company should be perceived by the target audience? • • • • • • •

Entertaining Fun Informative Organized Accurate Pleasing Interesting

5. What are some specific visual goals the site should convey? • • • •

Organized layout Simple Information easy to locate and understand Colorful photographs

Communication Strategy: How will we meet our measurable goals? 1. What is the overall message you are trying to convey to your target audience? (For example, cost-effective, secure, reliable, efficient.) I am trying to convey to my audience that I am a cultural person and want to share my travels with them. 2. How will you convey the overall message? (For example, effective messaging through copy, directed path towards goal, specific offer on home page.) The information detailed on home page, on the subsequent pages, and through a comments box and email link. 3. Identify stages of development (if appropriate) used to execute goals. • Planning and Defining the Website • Developing the Structure of the Website • Designing the Visual Parts of the Website • Testing the Website/Production • Launching and Maintaining the Website 4. How will you measure the success of the redesigned site? Visitors to the website can email me or use the comments box to ask questions or leave

comments about the site. The more comments and dialogue that happens on the site, the more success it will have. Competitive Positioning: How you are different from your competition and the factors that will make you a success. 1. How is your company or your web presence different from your competition? There is no real competition. It's a personal website that doesn't offer anything other than information, a way to share my travel experiences with anyone who wants to read them. I will have gorgeous photographs and funny stories of our adventures within my travelogue. 2. What specifically sets your company apart from your competition? Again, there is no competition. I'm not trying to sell anything. I hope to be able to entice more people to travel. Maybe other people who have websites about their travels, their goal isn't to spark people's interest in traveling. 3. What areas of the current site are successful and why? There is no current website. Targeted Message: State a to-the-point word or concise phrase that will appropriately describe the site once it is launched. My website will share my experiences of traveling abroad and will transform the common traveler to a world-wide explorer, by the stories it contains and the photographs that accompany the stories.
