balanced living Grandma’s Recipes When it comes to housekeeping, take cues from grandmothers, who worked naturally, before the advent of synthetic cleaning products. Though they used vinegar and water for most household cleaning tasks, each had a few baking-soda tricks up her sleeve. Today we’d call such habits “green.” Here are a few of their no-mess, no-fuss recipes:

►Air freshener: Put some

cloves in a pan of water and simmer it on the stove. For bathroom odors, a simple lit match often does the trick.

►Disinfectant: Vinegar is a good

natural disinfectant. But if you have newborns or immunosuppressed family members who need microbiocidal action, a commercial disinfectant is called for.

►Drain cleaner: Dissolve

greasy clogs by mixing ½ cup baking soda and 1 cup distilled white vinegar in boiling water. Pour the solution down the drain

and cover with a drain plug for several minutes. Flush with tap water until it clears.

►Fabric softener: Add 1 cup distilled white vinegar to your machine’s wash cycle. ►Floors: In a bucket, mix 1 cup distilled white vinegar and 1 gallon warm water. After washing floors, rinse with water. Don’t leave large pools of water to dry. ►Mildew remover: Mix vinegar with water, or sprinkle baking soda on a damp sponge to clean affected areas. Proper ventilation and dehumidifiers can reduce or eliminate the growth of mildew and mold. ►Scouring powder: Lightly sprinkle baking soda onto dirty surface. Wipe with a sponge. Rinse well. ►Window cleaner: Try spraying club soda on the window and wipe with a clean linen towel. Or clean with 2 teaspoons distilled white vinegar in 1 quart warm water.

Yoga + Ayurveda = Robust Good Health in 2015 By Tracy Chipman

H

appy New Year! Here we are again, January, a time of new beginnings and fresh starts. After all the holiday feasting, January arrives like a lovely winter stay-cation. For me it is a time to truly slow down, reflect, and to go within. It is also a time to renew and re-enliven my commitment to my good health! One way this happens for me is through yoga and her sister science, ayurveda.

Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word meaning the “the science of life” and is a system of natural health care that like yoga originated in India over 5,000 years ago. An ayurvedic lifestyle balances body, spirit, and mind through nutrition, exercise, and other lifestyle practices fostering stronger digestion, deeper sleep, and more robust health in general. By including a few basic ayurvedic practices into your daily routine, you can begin to make changes toward a more vital, more aware life. The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit word “yuj,” meaning “to join, unite, or yoke together.” By regularly including three fundamental aspects of yoga: exercise/ movement (asana), breathing (pranayama), and meditation into your life you can enjoy a clear, bright mind and a strong, capable body. Making yoga and ayurveda a regular part of your daily/ weekly routine now will have direct and lasting healthful effects for the rest of your life. The best wisdom for this beginning or recommitment is simple — begin where you are now. Don’t try to begin where you wish you were, or where your friend is at. Take responsibility for your health and just start where you are. Take a weekly Beginners or Chair yoga class or starting a ten minute a day home practice, begin by picking three of the ayurvedic practices below and bringing them into the fold of your day to day. In the beginning, it takes attention and commitment to make a new practice part of your daily life. However, as you feel better and better about the results, your priorities will naturally adjust to make space for it. Whether you’re choosing to add three morning asanas to start the day, ten minutes of breathing exercises after work, or eating regular home-cooked meals, once you have established your routine, it becomes a part of who you are and how you live!

Getting Started

Yoga: Start small, set moderate, realistic goals for yourself. One class a week (until June) or 10 minutes daily home practice (choose a regular time to practice each day) will be enough to experience benefits! It’s the quality of the time, not the quantity. If you miss a class or practice don’t be hard on yourself or give up altogether. Take a breath, recommit, and get back in the groove again. You may need extra support at first; set up a yoga buddy or teacher you can check in or practice with. Ayurveda: Here are a range of great places to start including ayurveda in your life. Choose any 3-5 of these practices and commit to incorporating them into your daily routine for three months. ■ Wake before dawn. ■ Tongue scraping — Upon waking, gently scrape the tongue from the back forward, until you have scraped the whole surface for 7-14 strokes. This stimulates the internal organs, helps digestion, and removes dead bacteria. ■ Drink a cup of warm water with a squeeze of lemon or lime first thing in the morning. ■ Eliminate in the a.m. — try to sit on the toilet at around the same time each morning, this will help train the bowels. ■ Yoga Asana — pick 3-5 that you enjoy, practice them 3-5 days a week. ■ Pranayama — a simple 1:1 breathing exercise; inhale to

the count of four, exhale to the count of four for 5 minutes a day. ■ Lunch — try making lunch your main meal of the day without TV or computer. Favor warm, cooked, and nourishing foods in the winter months. It is also best to sit while eating, eat mindfully, chew slowly (digestion begins in the mouth), enjoy light conversation or silence, sit for 5-10 minutes after eating, and enjoy a light walk afterwards. ■ Supper — try eating before 6 p.m. and make supper, which comes from the word sup as in supplemental, a lighter meal followed by a little walk. ■ Favor light reading, social activities, recreation in the evening and try to be off the computer by 7:30 p.m. ■ Early to bed — try to be in bed, winding down by 9:3010:00 p.m. There are endless possibilities to growing more health and wholeness in your life. Yoga and ayurveda can help, and now is a beautiful place to begin! Here’s to your robust health in body and mind this year! Currently she teaches weekly drop-in classes at The CORE Menomonie, a {Going Within} winter yoga series, and offers Ayurveda Yoga Specialist consultations by appointment. More Confident in 2015

Just because urinary incontinence is common, does not mean it is normal, nor should it be something you have to “just live with.” By Dr. Jennifer Bimmel, DPT

L

et’s talk specifically about stress urinary incontinence. What is it? Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is the loss of urine upon physical exertion such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, or exercise. This form of incontinence may occur due to weak pelvic floor muscles contributing to the inability to support the bladder and urethra. Some risk factors for having weak pelvic floor muscles include female gender, aging, childbirth, and athletics. But again, just because this is a common occurrence within these groups does not mean this is something you should just have to learn to deal with. Shown through the 2010 systematic review by Price et al, pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) boasts significant evidence in improving SUI. What is PFMT? It’s “Kegels.” It is important to note that 40 percent of women performing Kegels do so incorrectly. To prevent ineffective PFMT, it would be valuable to refer one to a qualified physical therapist who can ensure patients/clients are performing pelvic floor exercises with proper form during a minimum of at least one formal training session. “Okay, so now I’m listening,” you say. “I may be doing Kegels wrong? Or, I don’t even know what Kegels are? Are

you telling me I can go to a physical therapist to exercise my lady parts?” Yes. During a physical therapy session with a pelvic floor specialist or women’s health specialist, you will learn all about urinary incontinence. There are more forms of it than just SUI, such as urge urinary incontinence and functional urinary incontinence. Women will be educated on the anatomy of the pelvic floor and how the urinary system works. You will get a holistic approach to helping you improve and cure your urinary incontinence. A discussion about nutrition (are your daily fluids irritating your bladder?) and your toileting habits (how often are you going Some risk factors for to the bathroom?). And of having weak pelvic floor course we’ll take a look muscles include female at how your muscles are gender, aging, childbirth, functioning. Are you able and athletics. But again, to contract your pelvic just because this is a floor muscles? How common occurrence within long can you hold this these groups does not contraction for? Can you mean this is something you do quick contractions? Can should just have to learn to you perform PFMT in a deal with. variety of positions? These are extremely important muscles responsible for supporting your internal organs and having bladder/bowel movements. We’ll take you through an individual treatment approach specific to your needs. Depending on severity of UI, most individuals I work with have approximately six treatment sessions, just once per week. So before you stock up on more pads, fill up your medicine cabinet, or elect for surgery, try a conservative, more empowering approach to addressing urinary incontinence with physical therapy! Getting More Joy in 2015 “Remember that your natural state is joy.”

—Wayne Dyer

T

he depths of winter are upon us in Wisconsin. In the frozen ground, right at this very moment, there are bulbs and seeds just waiting for spring to bloom and show off their colors. What seeds did you plant inside yourself last year? Did you vow to eat better, drink less, lose weight, train for a 5K or marathon? Before you start feeling bad, let’s do a little exercise. No running shoes or yoga pants needed, just a paper and pen. Just for fun, no thinking. Start with taking a few deep breaths. Write down 3-5 things you really wanted in 2014. No editing. No judging. Just write them down. Now for the life coaching magic, take each one of those things and just like those Madlibs you loved as a kid, plug it into this sentence: When I get _______________________(one thing you wrote), I will feel_____________________________. What would it be like to start feeling like that right now? Do you really need the thing to get the feeling? What if you just decided to feel that feeling? Healthy, more abundance, greater fulfillment, love, peace, happiness, bliss, and my personal favorite, JOY, are all possible for you at this very moment. Just for this moment, feel joy throughout your body. Feel it with all of your senses. Delicious! Now as you go back to your normal day, begin to notice when that delicious feeling returns. Maybe it’s the coffee aroma, the smile from your barista, the gorgeous sunrise, or all three that give you a little glimpse back to the moment of joy. As you move through your day, in awe of the wonderful life you have, focus on gratitude. Make a New Year's resolution to do something for your health—we can help with a regular yoga practice.

“The root of joy is gratefulness.”

—David Steindl-Rast

Gratitude not only extends the deliciousness, but it rewires the brain by strengthening the joy centers and shrinking the fear centers. (The fear centers keep us safe from harm but are overdeveloped and overzealous in our modern world where we are bombarded with everything that is not going well everywhere all the time!) This takes practice, and sometimes it is necessary to “fake it ‘til you make it.” If you really would love a sportscar or fabulous house, dwell in the way it feels to test drive the car or go to a parade of homes. No need to attach to the idea of a specific car or house; spend your energy in feeling the joy. Sometimes the thing you thought was important is no longer even necessary. Then you are free to move on to some new desire or aspiration. The more we all work on bringing joy into our own day, the more we have to share and the more seeds we plant for others to do the same.

“Scatter joy!”

—Ralph Waldo Emerson

Just wait until we all start blooming this spring! It’s going to be AWESOME! Dr. Jodi Ritsch MD, is available for mindful change life coaching at The Center in Eau Claire (www.lifebydesignec.com) or family medicine appointments at The Joyful Doc Clinic in Menomonie (www.joyfuldoc.com.)

What Are the Benefits of Colon Hydrotherapy? 1) Colon hydrotherapy detoxifies your body.

Colon cancer is the second leading cause of death. The American Cancer Society suggests that the increase in bowel cancer is due to pesticides/herbicides sprayed on crops, hormones/antibiotics fed to animals, carcinogenic agents in the air we breathe and the water we drink. The longer waste stays in our colon, the more we are exposed to these substances. Periodic cleansing of the colon wall could minimize exposure of certain carcinogens. When fecal waste material accumulates over a long period of time, it breaks down and becomes toxic. Toxins are excreted through the colon, liver, kidneys, lungs and skin. Two of the main functions of the colon are to absorb water and remove waste and toxins. Just think, if our colon is clogged up with putrefying waste, we are reabsorbing dirty water and toxins back into our system! Enemas only reach the lower portion of the colon, whereas colon hydrotherapy reaches the entire large intestine which is 5-6 feet in length.

2) Colon hydrotherapy hydrates your body.

Our bodies are made up of approximately 75 percent water, and our brains are approximately 85 percent water. A general rule of thumb is to drink half of our body weight in ounces of water daily. Example: If you weigh 100 pounds, you should be drinking 50 ounces of water daily. Roomtemperature water is better absorbed. Filtered water is best. Most of us do not drink enough water.

3) Colon hydrotherapy helps your colon work more efficiently. The colon is a muscular tube that relies on peristalsis (muscular contraction) to move waste through the colon to expel it. A colonic irrigation will “exercise and tone” the colon. Think of a session as a forty-five-minute workout for your colon. Ideally, we should have at least two bowel movements per day. If not, we are constipated. Bowel movements should be soft, not hard. Colon hydrotherapy only uses filtered water. Laxatives are chemical irritants that can become habit forming.

4) Colon hydrotherapy can be used as an alternative prep prior to a colonoscopy instead of drinking the liquid prep solution. Two sessions are required the day before and day of the procedure. If you have constipation issues, three sessions would be required.

What is a colon hydrotherapy session like?

First, you will fill out a health history form, which the therapist will review and screen for contraindications. Next, you will change into a gown and lie on a comfortable table covered with a sheet. Soft music plays in the background, and lights are dimmed. Essential oils and lotion are used to create a spa-like experience. Warm cloths are applied to the feet and lower legs. Reflex points on the feet and lower legs are stimulated and massaged to help your colon release. I am not a massage therapist or reflexologist, but I know which reflex points to stimulate. Filtered water flows into the colon. Waste is softened and loosened, resulting in evacuation through natural peristalsis (wavelike muscular contraction.) That process is repeated a few times during a session. Everything is contained in tubing, so there is no mess or odor. The waste goes directly into the sewer system.

How many sessions should I have?

Everyone is individual, but you may want to consider having three sessions in a three-week period for optimal results if you have never had a colonic. After that many people choose to have a colonic monthly or every other month. Twelve is the maximum number of colonics you should have in a twelve-month period.

How should I prepare for a colonic?

Drink lots of room-temperature water the day before and day of session. Avoid gas-producing foods and liquids. Don’t eat two hours prior to session. Equipment is FDA-approved and uses disposable tubing. Backflow prevention safety is built into the tubing and equipment. A three-step filtration system is used for both the hot and cold water supply. Equipment is disinfected with a germicidal solution after each use. Healing Paths Being in partnership with a 1,000-pound animal is where the magic happens. This is a somatic experience that touches the core of who you are and can help you transform into the person you were meant to be.

Horse Magic By Jayne Nuutinen Wolff

F

or those of you who love animals, you know there is a special bond, but you may not understand how that happens. It comes from the fact that most animals are in the present moment and they sense how we feel. We can

learn a lot from our animals, especially horses, about being present in our bodies and being in the moment. Equine Facilitated Coaching is a newer profession that offers you a chance to learn about communicating with horses for personal growth with the guidance of a life coach. You can begin to understand the language of horses by observing how they communicate with each other. It is similar to learning a foreign language and takes practice. Once you have a dialogue established, you can create a partnership. Being in partnership with a 1,000-pound animal is where the magic happens. This is a somatic experience that touches the core of who you are and can help you transform into the person you were meant to be. Life coaches are great listeners and ask questions that inspire you to find the answers within. Horses are great teachers based on the fact that they are prey animals and must be in the present moment for their safety and because they are social animals that live in a herd. When you put it all together it

Nutrition is the medicine that allows people to heal without medicine.

becomes a transformational experience. During a session, I will instruct you on how to integrate the EpalaÂŽ Five Essentials before working with the horse and to embrace all aspects of yourself. All activities are done working from the ground, so no riding skills and no horse handling skills are required. You will have plenty of opportunities to work closely with a horse to gain the awareness of how you impact the horse and the world around you. All you need is an open mind and heart, an appreciation for horses, and a willingness to see yourself from a different perspective to continue your personal growth journey. Why would you want to do an Equine Facilitated Coaching session? It is a way to find purpose and peace in your life. A chance to change a habit or pattern that is bothering you. It helps with transitions in life: school, work, new business, family, health, relationships, retiring, and empty nesters. Make your dreams come true. Wellness goals. Auto-immunity: Management through Nutrition By Daniel Czelatdko,DC, CCSP, DACBN, Tenold Chiropractic

A

uto-immunity occurs when our system develops antibodies to attack its own tissues. The body does not recognize its own tissue and perceives it as foreign. The body then wants to destroy this particular tissue because its main goal is to survive infection. In case you haven’t noticed, the frequency of auto-immune diseases appears to be increasing. Despite poor reporting on autoimmune diseases, there is a trend showing an increase in its incidence. Conditions like Crohn’s disease have more than tripled in the last thirty years, and multiple sclerosis (MS) has more than doubled. So what are some possible reasons as to why autoimmunity occurrence has increased? Auto-immune conditions are nothing more than undifferentiated immune failure, ultimately leading to defined cancers, infections, and degeneration. One possible cause is the lack of cell

membrane integrity due to bad fats in our diets. Fats such as trans fats tend to form poor phospholipid barriers. This allows DNA to leak out of the cell, and then our immune system recognizes the DNA as being foreign. DNA in the blood like this is unmethylated. So let’s say some unmethylated thyroid DNA is floating through the blood Realize that it’s difficult and the body recognizes that to repair tissue that as possible infection. Along with a poor diet, other contributors are genetic predisposition to methylation difficulty, overburdening of the body with toxic chemicals, psychological stress, and immune dysregulation due to the burdens put on it through the intestinal track. Conditions such as leaky syndrome are a prime example. Every person has a normal amount of auto-immune activity, which is vital for immune management. Normal

Chiropractic Cares sampling of genetic material in the bloodstream provides feedback to the immune system. The body will interpret genetic material in the blood as upstream tissue damage and degeneration vulnerable to infection and disease. Autoimmune conditions such as psoriasis, Grave’s disease, vitiligo, rheumatoid arthritis, celiac disease, and lupus all then have the opportunity to form. So what are the goals of managing this condition? In any of these cases, the employment of therapies seeking to balance all systems of the body can help bring a resolution of auto-immune conditions. Down regulation of the immune activity by reducing inflammatory and chronic infection burdens while also balancing the intestinal track can gradually improve symptoms and result in a remission. Realize that it’s difficult to repair tissue that has been attacked and damaged by auto-immune responses. However, the goal here is to stop the progression and begin the healing process. This article does not permit the ability to go into extreme detail on each case by case basis, however there are some keys to managing auto-immunity. One step is to improve lipid membrane reinforcement, and this can be done via essential fats like omega 3s. The fats will allow a better

phospholipid membrane, preventing unmethylated DNA from escaping. Supporting methylation of circulating DNA is also important, so utilizing foods that are methyl foods, such as cruciferous vegetables, garlic, or spanish black radish, are helpful. Third, one must reduce the body’s inflammatory and immune burdens, such as food allergies. Each body system is then supported to promote healing of particular target tissues. This could include specific glandular support for the thyroid, the gut, bone, etc. Typically the gut has to be repaired, and this would be done via pre- and probiotic efforts along with other support to heal the intestinal tract. Although detailed and systematic, auto-immune conditions can be managed and placed into remission if done with proper nutritional therapies that systematically stop the immune response to its own body tissue and heal that particular tissue with specific nutraceuticals. Dr. Dan Czelatdko is a board-certified clinical nutritionist from The American Clinical Board of Nutrition. He has been practicing nutrition and chiropractic for the last twenty-three years with an emphasis on hormone health at Tenold Chiropractic in Eau Claire.

Good Eats

A Brief History of Tea By Amber Erickson Gabbey

A

ll tea, shockingly, comes from the same plant, Camellia sinensis. But from that one plant come thousands of varieties to choose from. Tea is the second most common drink worldwide, only behind water, but if you don’t know what you’re looking at, tea shopping can be a stressful experience. All varieties of tea boil down to five basic categories: black, white, green, and oolong. The fifth, not really a tea at all, is The main benefit in herbal. Making different teas tea comes from the from the same plant is the result antioxidants, which of production, including the part work to find and of the leaf used and how the destroy cancer cells. leaves are heated and cooled. This production process turns one single plant into teas that, when steeped, vary greatly in flavor, color, caffeine, aroma, and benefits. From the medicinal perspective, tea has long been considered beneficial (with the science to back it up) for weight loss, preventing cancer, and preventing heart disease. The main benefit in tea comes from the antioxidants, which work to find and destroy cancer cells. Green tea, specifically, is considered a natural solution to reduce blood pressure, improve oral health, and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. explain. Note, the market these days includes a lot of blends— either different types of tea, or tea leaves with flowers, other plants, or fruits. Black tea has a characteristic dark color and when steeped, a high caffeine count compared to other teas. Black teas can have a quite strong and pronounced flavor. Black teas are best steeped under boiling water for several minutes. These teas are often served with milk and sugar. Here are a few common kinds of black tea: • English Breakfast • Earl Grey (black tea with bergamot oil) • Chai Tea • Pekoe • Darjeeling • Irish Breakfast White tea has a characteristic softness, from production to flavor. White teas are made from minimally processed young shoots from the tea plant and steep to a light color. White teas are commonly mixed with fruit and flowers, like jasmine, peach, melon, or lavender. Green tea has a characteristic yellow-green hue and a soft, earthy flavor. But don’t let that fool you; green teas can be intensely flavorful. To steep green teas, pour hot (but not boiling) water over the leaves and let sit for up to three minutes. Be careful not to over-steep green teas. Here are a few common kinds of green tea: • Gyokuro • Longjing • Bi Luo Chun • Sencha • Matcha Oolong tea is most known for being less strong than a black tea but more robust than a green. This is the tea you are drinking in Chinese restaurants that you may think is black tea. The characteristic flavor and scent profile of oolong is flowers or fruits, and many other styles, like Darjeeling, Earl Grey, and Assam, can be made into an oolong style. Steep oolong in hot (not boiling) water for up to ten minutes. Herbal tea is not really a tea after all. This type isn’t made from the leaves of the tea leaf and contains no caffeine. Herbal tea is made with naturally caffeine-free plants, flowers, and fruits. Some common herbal tea (also called herbal infusion) flavors include chamomile, peppermint, echinacea, ginseng, hibiscus, lemon, ginger, raspberry, nettles, rosehips, tulsi, etc. If you love tea but find yourself going back to the same kinds, use this opportunity to try something new. If you like green tea, try white or herbal. If you like black teas, try an oolong, or try something totally outside your comfort zone. There are thousands of tea varieties and blends on store shelves right now. Have fun with it.

When was the last time you felt really good? Healthy? Slept well? Why haven’t you felt “normal?”

Education is Power Is the issue lack of information, lack of motivation, or just not sure where to start? We know education is power. Not just in flexing your brain but also in the knowledge of the basics to care for yourself and your family. Too many health issues that were reserved for the “older” citizens are now trickling down to our children and grandchildren. Arthritis, diabetes, obesity, increases in allergies to everyday foods like peanut butter, nuts, breads and so much more. There are increases in what were once rare diseases are now becoming common place like autism, ADD/ADHD or even juvenile auto immune diseases. There is so much information available but you have a difficult time in deciphering what is true and what is in error, what is pertinent and what is hype. Does anyone have any reasonable answers? All you would like is to feel better and take care of your family. Not too much to ask…right? What if I told you that there are answers and you can take back your control and responsibility for you and your family’s health in a logical, science-based manner without breaking the bank and taking a doctorate to do so. Let us assist you in finding the path back to health for you and your family. Quantum Health & Wellness/Rejuvenation DrLynnThompson.com 715.456.6734
