Bishop’s Epistle

September 18, 2016

Example to Spouse and Children!

THEME: STANDARDS OF EXCELLENCE, ADVANCING THE KINGDOM!

Parish Flock, under my care, Grace to you!

The Call to Worship--------------------Elder of the Lyceum Council

My Love Epistle seeks to reach out to you in the midst of your struggles with spouse and/or children. What must you do for a better relationship? Listen to the message from God through the eminent apostle Paul to the Philippian Church: “Brethren, join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as you have us for a pattern” (Philippians 3:17 NKJV).

Hymn of Rejoicing-------------------------------Gathered Assembly “Stand Up for Jesus” #394

As you read this, you are probably thinking “How can I be an example and communicate the Holy Faith with all of my hang-ups?” Not many Christians can exhort others to imitate them (the literal meaning is “to follow”).

Responsive Scripture Reading--------Gathered Assembly

I would say to you “If you don’t believe that what’s happened to you in your relationship to God, the Father through Jesus Christ, the Son, ought to happen to everyone, then probably too little has happened to you.”

Fervent Prayer------------------------------------Diakonos

Every time I read Paul’s alarming, audacious challenge: “Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ” (I Corinthians 11:1 NKJV), I am reminded that the saints are urged to imitate the self-sacrificing example of Paul and Christ Jesus. That’s a great test of our present pilgrimage through Christian life. If we saints are not so excited about what we have found that we want everyone to experience it, especially your spouse and children, then we have not found very much. When he appeared before King Agrippa, Paul proclaimed the winsome power of his life in Christ Jesus. Agrippa responded, “In this short time, you think you will make me a Christian?”, knowing full well that Paul was seeking to have him find the faith Paul had experienced, To this question, Paul said, “I would to God that not only you, but also all who hear me today, might become both almost and altogether such as I am, except for these chains” (Acts 26:29 NKJV). Here again, the same confidence: Imitate me! Can you say that at home, at work, with your friends? If not, why not? But the question which probably comes to mind as you read this is, “How can I, knowing all my imperfections, set myself up as an example?” That is to misunderstand this passage. God led Paul to be very honest about his hang-ups. What Paul wanted the saints at Philippi to imitate was the same experience of God’s grace and forgiveness. How he handled his failures was an invaluable part of his witness. He didn’t want people to know how great he was, but how great God had been in his life! How about you? Every day people are deciding about Jesus the Christ by what they see of Him in us. We are writing history about our faith daily. Write well! Amen. Until He Comes, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully, Bishop Dr. Wm. La Rue Dillard Parish Under-Shepherd/Soul-Watcher
