Why We Celebrate

J

esus is a redeemer, a restorer in every way. His day on the cross looked like a colossal failure, but it was his finest moment. He launched a kingdom where the least will be the greatest and the last will be first, where the poor will be comforted and the meek will inherit the earth. Jesus brought together the homeless with the privileged and said, “You’re all poor, and you’re all beautiful.” The cross leveled the playing field, and no earthly distinction is valid anymore. There is a new “us” — people rescued by the Passover Lamb, adopted into his family and transformed into saints. It is the most epic miracle in history. That is why we celebrate. —Jen Hatmaker, 7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess

The Second Coming of the Days of Noah

Page 6, 7 Church Ministry News

I sat in the theatre watching this movie, wondering when the biblical movie Noah was going to start. To my dismay this sci-fi movie was it. I was devastated at the things I saw, i.e. a stowaway on the Ark, Noah threatening to kill babies, rock watchers, that I thought were transformers and the movie ended without a word about the rainbow. What a deception, this movie was not inspired by the Bible.

Jesus warned that in the last days the world would once again be like it was in the days of Noah, just before the flood. See the Bible for the true story in the Book of Genesis, starting in Chapter 6. Jesus prophesied in Matthew chapter 24: “For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark” (Matthew 24:37-38). Well it looks like we are almost there.

Join Me in Living A Life of Gratitude Sons and Daughters in Light, I must confess that the Lord Christ has moved me in thought to a different place in my pilgrimage with Him. The Bible says to saints that we should be “Strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light (Colossians 1:11-12). Joy is what distinguishes Christians patience and longsuffering from the stoic’s indifference to pain. The essence of Christian life can be summarized in many legitimate ways, including forgiveness. The realization that the Father has forgiven us in Christ requires us to forgive others (Colossians 3:13). Holiness, because we have been set apart as holy through the work of the Savior, we must put holiness into practice in our lives (I Peter 1:11-16). God, in His patience, was kind to us and brought us to repentance so we must bear with the faults of others and wait patiently for the Lord to fulfill His purposes (James 5:7-11). In fact, thanksgiving in all things should be the perpetual attitude and the inner chief virtue of redeem people. We can live a Christian life of gratitude only when we recall that everything we have in Christ is an inheritance. Typically, and inheritance is something that is passed from the person who earned it to be a benefactor who has not worked for it, wholly at the initiative of the earner. The Bible refers to our eternal salvation as an inheritance because it is something that Jesus earned for us and that we do not work for, but receive by faith alone (Romans 4:2; II Corinthians 5:21). Power to live a victorious life comes from the Holy Spirit who presently lives within Saints; reminding us of all the blessings we have in Christ Jesus and our need to thank Him. Consequently, no Christian can live a live a life perpetually void of gratitude. In spite of everything, I am so grateful, and I want my whole life to be a life of gratitude on display. How about you? Until He Comes, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully, Bishop Dr. Wm. LaRue Dillard Parish UnderUnder-shepherd

BLAST FROM THE PAST

Thankful for This Day By Eric M. Johnson You woke me up this morning, Started me on my way, Blessed me with a miracle To see another Day,

Foretaste of the Feast

I see you in the mirror Partaking of your Bread, I drink your living water, The Word that I've been fed,

W

hile teaching a group of First Communion students about the Lord’s Supper, a pastor gave each child one M&M’s candy at the beginning of class. “Eat it!” he invited, before proceeding to teach. Near the end of the session, the pastor asked the students what they’d thought of the earlier treat. “Good!” said one. “I wanted more!” another admitted. “I wanted a whole bag!” chimed in a third. “Now you understand another thing about Holy Communion,” the pastor said. He drew out of his supplies a full bag of M&M’s for each student. “Sometimes we call Communion ‘a foretaste of the feast to come.’” Indeed, he explained, God promises that one day we’ll feast together with Jesus in heaven, but until then, Communion is that delicious little taste of what the feast will be like. We’re left wanting more because we have “[tasted] and [seen] that the LORD is good” (Psalm 34:8).

I wanna say: Thank You!... Thank You!... Thank You!....Thank you for this Day. I labor in your vineyard, Reaping what I sew, I thank you for your blessings, When I'm feeling low, Living every moment to glorify your name, To restore us to the Father, That's the reason why you came, I wanna say: Thank You!... Thank You!... Thank You!....Thank you for this Day. Relaxing with the children, At oneness with His Word, We as God's children, Have faith in what we've heard, You washed away my worries, I leave them at your feet, Resting on the promises, You keep me as I sleep. I wanna say: Thank You!... I'm Grateful!... Thank You!....for another Day.

PRELUDE: the beginning…PREPARATION: groundwork, planning… The above word describe “Something BIG is about to happen” All of us would like BIG things to happen in our lives, especially when we’ve planned for them. But sometimes unexpected BIG things happen. Which do you prefer; BIG things planned, or a surprise! As long as it’s a GOOD, BIG thing, that’s alright. But when it’s not a good thing, what do we do? God told Noah to prepare the ark in Genesis 6:13, (because it’s gonna rain: BIG deal!). In Exodus 12, God told the Israelites to prepare to leave Egypt with only unleavened bread, with the other spoils (it had a purpose: 4m marched, BIG deal!). Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”(God has prepared us for His work: If you’re working for Him, it’s a BIG deal!). Habakkuk 10:5, “Therefore, when He came into the world, He said: ‘Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but a body You have prepared for Me.”’ (God prepared a body for Himself in the personality of Jesus the Christ to sacrifice for us). That was a really BIG deal!!!

Reflect on what the RESSURECTION really means.

Lord, open my eyes to the hurts, needs, and struggles of a world that is so desperately in need of Your love. Help me to be Your instrument to inject that love into hurting lives.

H

ello SBC Family, today I am going in a different direction, presenting someone whom I believe that everyone has heard at least once in my life. Get it! “Once In My Life.” Well, if you don’t know who I am talking about, let me tell you who this person is. It is no other than Mr. Stevie Wonder. Steveland Hardaway Morris (aka. Stevie Wonder) was born May 13, 1950 in Saginaw, Michigan. He was discovered by Ronnie White of the Miracles, at age 11. In 1961, he signed with Motown and changed his name to Little Stevie Wonder. In 1962, at age 12, he had his first hit single, “Fingertips,” which was released on his debut album titled, “Little Stevie Wonder the 12 Old Genius.” His life is history. Stevie Wonder has recorded more than thirty top ten hits in the U. S; received twenty-two Grammy Awards, a Life Time Achievement Award, and sold more than 100 million albums and singles, making him one of the top 60 best-selling artists in the world. He is also known for activist work in political causes, included is his 1980 campaign to make Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday a national holiday in the United States. A little know fact that some of you may not know about Mr. Stevie Wonder is that he can drive a car. Although he has been blind since a few days after birth, he learned how to drive at age 30, and owns many automobiles. Some of his hits include: “For Once In My Life,” “You Are the Sunshine of My Life,” “I Just Called to Say I Love You,” “Superstition,” and the ever popular album, “Songs in the Key of Life.” Let’s remember Mr. Stevie Wonder in our prayers as we continue to enjoy the songs he has given to us throughout the years. For Now, I am Out! ~Danielle~

THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST

story as old as time! A story that never grows old for Christians… revisit Mel Gibson’s, “The Passion of the Christ” and discover something new. This depiction of the last 12 hours of Jesus’ life opens with his betrayal by Judas, his condemnation by the Pharisees, and his appearance before Pontius Pilate. Pilate defers to King Herod, but Herod returns Jesus to Pilate. Pilate then asks the crowd to choose between Jesus and Barabbas. You know how the story ends. Revisit the Passion of the Christ and discover something new this Resurrection Season. I do every time I watch this movie. ~ Precious

ANNUAL HOSPITALITY MINISTRY CELEBRATION SERVICE AT SBC

“Ms. Jacquelyn Idrell Powell”

J

acquelyn Idrell Powell, affectionately known throughout the community of Monrovia and her SBC family as Jackie. She has lived in Monrovia for over forty years. She has four sons (twin boys make up the four) and eight grandchildren. Her sons and grandchildren even attended the same elementary and high schools as well.

Jackie has been a member of Second Baptist Church for 39 years. Her Ministry includes the Pastoral Care for over 30 years, serving with Elder Craig and Diakona Ellis Johnson. She was a member of the Senior Usher Board and the Deborah Circle, and is a member of Sunday School Class 10, “Challengers,” in which she attends faithfully. Jackie graduated from High School in Alabama; she attended Citrus College in Azusa, California and Pasadena City College where she took classes in Early Childhood Development and Kinship. Her community involvement includes Monrovia MAPP, where she worked to improve the streets in Monrovia and other community projects. Her class was one of the first classes to graduate at City Hall. Jackie says her proudest accomplishments are being mother and grandmother, owning her own Child Care business for over fifteen years, and seeing her granddaughter dancing on “Stage.” Jackie said that her best mentor was her late grandfather, Frank Idrell, who taught her to love herself and to thank God for her raisin complexion and her full stature. Best female role model was her late grandmother, Jessie Idrell, who taught her to believe in God, work for your own money, respect and love your friends, and always trust “God.” Jackie said if given a chance to do something outstanding in the world, she would make college available to all students from age 17 to 70, and require high school students to read one book a week before graduating. When asked, what she does to relax? Jackie said that she likes to read; watch the sunset over the ocean, love walking in the blue waters of Jamaica while on vacation, and reading the Sunday school lesson with girlfriends in Alabama. A surprising secret that some of you may not know about Ms. Powell. She is a good dancer, and has been baking since age 9; she started school at age 4, because her grandmother wanted her to be with her cousins. A super power that Jackie would like to have is to have all her BlackChristian Sisters love each other and uplift each other. She said if we did this, “Then we could move mountains!!!” Additionally, Jackie loves family dinners on Sundays and Holidays. She and her ex-sister-in-laws are the best of friends and are at each others homes on most holidays. She loves to teach her grandchildren how to cook and sew, especially the boys. She also likes to share her family history with them of her childhood growing up in Alabama; going fishing, playing in the barn, picking peaches off the tree in the front yard, and sitting at night in the summertime watching fire flies (she called them lighting bugs then). Jackie says that she is very proud of her accomplishments in life and praises God for allowing her to have her own successful Child Care business for over fifteen years, which was one of her dreams and looks forward to what God has in store for her future. She says that she loves the Lord with all her heart, and will continue to serve in any capacity she can at Second Baptist Church. On behalf of Bishop Dillard, SBC Gazette and members, we salute Ms. Jacquelyn Idrell Powell, our Spotlight recipient.

“April showers, brings May flowers!” But for some, it increases your exposure to pollen and seasonal allergies.

P

ollen doesn’t mean to bug you. It’s here to help plants reproduce. But if you inhale it, it can cause allergy symptoms such as: Sneezing, Watery Eyes, Nasal Congestion, Runny Nose, Itchy Throat, and Coughs. It’s a lot like a cold, with a sore throat and hoarseness, which one usually gets like clockwork when blooming plants make pollen. Pollens that are spread by wind are usually the main cause of seasonal allergies, while pollens that rely on insects (such as the honeybee) to be carried to other plants do not. Pollen can travel long distances and the levels in the air can vary from day to day. Levels of pollen tend to be highest from early morning to mid-morning, between 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. Several Ways to Keep Your Home Pollen Free: 1. Close windows and outside doors. 2. Use air-conditioning to cool your home. 3. Roll up car windows when driving. 4. Dry clothing and bedding the dryer. Don’t hang them outside to dry. 5. Remember that pets can bring pollen into the house on their fur. Don’t allow pets on beds, if they spend time outside. If you have to be outside, minimize your exposure to pollen.
