Second’s Gazette
S
Mission Statement econd’s Gazette serves as a monthly newsletter to inform the congregants of valuable information happening on the campus of Second Baptist Church and in the community, as well as spotlight individuals and events that edify our parish church, but most importantly; glorifies the name of Jesus Christ.
“God is sovereign and free, not limited by our failures, to do for us what we cannot do for ourselves.” often watch the beauty of our Church Family, our Bishop and all the members that make up how we spend our Sunday, at church. I thought about the movie “ANY GIVEN SUNDAY” that came out some years ago; not about the game, but the movie title. Oliver Stone, the director stated, “Football is mesmerizing because it’s a figurative war: You go in one direction till you get there.” What about church, following our leader, he teaches and guides us and references the Holy Bible. Our battle is with good and evil. The Diakonos, Trustees, Ushers, and Evangelism Ministries follow Bishop’s direction. The road to heaven is not figurative, it is real. On any given Sunday, God might be pleased to turn your world upside down, in all the best ways. So, on Any Given Sunday, at Second Baptist Church in Monrovia, California you can catch members “Praising God from Whom All Blessings Flow”. We are filled with the Spirit and not afraid to show it. “I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus”. Philippians 3:14 NKJV “At home, in my own house, there is no warmth or vigor in me, but in the church when the multitude is gathered together, a fire is kindled in my heart and it breaks its way through.” Or as countless of us have learned, our Father simply loves to bless the family gathering. (D. Mathis) No matter what kind of week you’ve had — no matter how depleted your tank, how distracted your mind, or how disquieted your heart — God may be pleased to turn it all around on Any Given Sunday.

CONFRONTING THE DEVIL, HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE? (Mark 5:1-6:13) Sons and Daughters of Faith, Grace to You! We Christians are citizens of heaven while living here on earth. Our Christian faith is the most important stance we have and we will not abandon our Lord. Christianity is unapologetically supernatural in its convictions. We get our marching orders from the blessed Word of the Holy Bible. We confess belief in the Triune God; miracles, and all other truths of divine revelation. The Bible says: “Then they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gadarenes. And when He had come out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no one could bind him, not even with chains, because he had often been bound with shackles and chains. And the chains had been pulled apart by him and the shackles broken in pieces; neither could anyone tame him” (Mark 5:1-5, NKJV). Part of the Christian Baptist’s faith confession is in the existence of normally invisible spirits, some who do God’s will and some who oppose it. The ministry of Jesus teaches us much about these spirits, particularly demons, spirits who oppose the Lord. My chosen passage teaches us about Jesus’ encounter with the Gadarene demon from whom our Savior exorcised a legion (horde). It also teaches about the healing of Jabirus’ daughter and the hemorrhaging woman, followed by the Apostles’ first preaching and deliverance mission. These stories demonstrate our Lord’s authority as we see Him confronting Satan, sickness and demonic confrontation between Jesus and demons. A demon possessed man cried out: “When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him. And he cried out with a loud voice and said, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore you by God that You do not torment me” (Mark 5:6-7). Though this apparently was his first encounter with Jesus, this demon-possessed man knew who Jesus was, such knowledge coming to him from the demons that indwelt him. We use the name of Jesus when we are confronted by demonic spirits. The power (Holy Spirit) within a Saint is greater than the spirit of demons. The passage teaches us that there can be more than one demon in a person at a time. In verse 9, the demon who spoke out through the man and declared telling Jesus that “his name was legion: for we are many” - the largest unit of the Roman army at that time, 3000-6000 strong, indicating that many demons possessed the man. Thank God for the power He has invested within the Saints for His glory and our victory. Amen! Until He Comes, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully,
Bishop Dr. Wm. La Rue Dillard, Parish Shepherd

Do You Know Her Name?
S
he came to celebrate her daughter’s fourteenth Birthday Anniversary. They were to celebrate the opening night of the Centennial Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia on July 27, 1996, with a night of dancing with people around the world. But it did not happen as planned because she died that night as a result of the Atlanta Olympic Bombing, the actions by the hands of one man who said that he was justified because innocent lives (abortions) were being killed everyday in our republic.
Did he take an innocent life? Do you know her name? Her name is Alice Hawthorne. She was the only person who was killed in that tragedy. An innocent life lost by the hands of a person who decided to take justice in his hands. Now she is a footnote in the pages of our history of violence and injustices, all in the name of justice and righteousness. God does not administer justice in this order. No airplane attacks, no beatings, bombings, no shootings, just come before the Bema Seat of Judgment on our day and give an account of the rights and the wrongs that we have done while here on planet Earth. Then we will be justified. Amen! Blackthen.com

III John 1:11 says, “Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God.” The evil in the world today is bolder than ever before; But GOD!
R
oman 12:2 states, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” It seems that our world is evolving into more bad things happening to good people. One could easily lose hope if you believed that this is all there is to life. I urge you to believe that God knows all and sees all. Nothing that happens is a surprise to Him. So I want to encourage you to hold on to His unchanging hand and pray for each other lest we give in to despair; He got us!!! My condolences go out to all of the family members whose had a loved one to die in the recent months; either by illness or at the hands of another; He still has you! If you don’t remember anything else, remember Psalm 121, stanzas 1-8: “I will lift up my eyes to the hills-From whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth, even forevermore.” Blessings to all of you!

Gospel singer Jovonta Patton of Minneapolis is “Finally Living,” which is the title of his record that does indeed sit atop the Billboard gospel charts. “Nearly all of the album’s sales for the week were generated by venue sales, the bulk of which originated from church appearances in his Minneapolis hometown.” Patton tells the Star Tribune spreading the word on social media about where to download “Finally Living” has also helped its success. But he agrees that “a lot of the sales have also been out-of-trunk, as they say in gospel music.” Patton and the group Deliverance For Youth also posted a live performance of one of the tracks to Facebook.

God's will is not just for us to be born again but for us to grow into spiritual adults. His intent for the Christian life is for it to be a process of growth in Christlikeness. With that in mind, believers must clearly understand how we can intentionally cooperate with the Holy Spirit's work to grow us into the likeness of Jesus. Acknowledging and utilizing the ways God uses different stages and seasons in our lives to shape us, the Unleashed study helps participants understand the lifelong process of spiritual growth and maximize God's work to conform them to the image of Christ. ortense Anderson, 90, born on March 31, 1926, in Sherman, Texas, passed away July 11, 2016. she resided in San Dimas, California at the time of passing. Celebration of Life, Friday, July 22, 2016 Second Baptist Church, 925 Shamrock Avenue, Monrovia, CA 91016
More than 90 years ago, on March 31, 1926, in Sherman, Texas God blessed the holy union of George Scruggs and Minnie Ola Boyd-Scruggs with a gift. Hortense, their amazing, trailblazing, college bound, poet was the second of the Scruggs' four girls born - her siblings, Irene Delores, Gladys Marie and Ruby Lee. Hortense accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at a young age. She attended the family church, Friendly Church of God In Christ in Sherman. The Boyd and the Scruggs families attended this church. The Scruggs family relocated to South Central area of Los Angeles, California. On Friday, May 11, 1945 Hortense married Winfred Raymond Anderson. God blessed their union with two beautiful children, Gregory "Co Co" and Deborah "Debby" in 1961, Winfred and Hortense moved to San Dimas, California where she resided near her three sisters, their husbands and families for over 55 years. In 1977, Hortense joined Second Baptist Church in Monrovia and became a founding member of the Pastoral Esteem Ministry. She served in the Hospitality Ministry, Sanctuary Choir, Feed the Homeless Ministry and on the Council of Mothers. Mother Hortense thrived under the leadership of her favorite, Bishop William LaRue Dillard. Her husband joined Second Baptist Church in January of 1980. That made her day. Hortense's husband of 53 years, Winfred, passed on May 28, 1998. Through it all Hortense kept her faith and trusted in God. Her many key achievements were her Christian faith In action, her marriage to Winfred for 53 beautiful years, her relationships with her family and extended family, travelling, playing dominos and cards, her unique ability to capture a special event through the poems she authored. At 85, she published her first book, "I Love Family". She was a strong "Tenorette" songstress, a trendsetting, extraordinary fashionista; a virtuous, Proverbs 31 woman, a gift to the body of Christ, a spiritual counselor, and a woman of valor. Her favorite motto was "Try God". She loved her Second Baptist Church family and ministries, her Bishop and the First Family. Preceded in passing by her husband, son and daughter, two grandsons and two of her sisters, Mother Hortense Anderson leaves to mourn her loss, four great grandchildren and eight great great -grandchildren; a sister - Mother Ruby Sims of San Dimas, CA, nieces, nephews and relatives in Texas, California and beyond; god daughters-Antoinette, Neferiti, LaKeisha, Claudia and Raven, as well as her beloved extended family – the Dillard, Willis, Whisenton, Husband and Jones families. Among her special friends were Priscilla Brown, Mother Delores Bridges and Mother Lois Gaston. On Monday, July 11, 2016 at 11:40pm the Lord Christ came for Hortense and promoted her to glory after 90 years of a life well lived here on earth. We have reason to celebrate. Her legacy of "Trying God" will resonate within us forever. She was a human library, a role model, a woman beloved. Her bronze skin was perfectly tanned by God. Her smile was contagious. Her spirit was warm, humorous, comforting, and full of wisdom and splendor. Second’s Gazette

1st Corinthians 5:8 reads, "To be absent from the body Is to be present with the Lord." This was one of her many favorite scriptures. Mother Hortense Anderson, affectionately known as "Granny" or "Grams" or "Tensie" is gone but certainly never will be forgotten. Thank you, Lord for letting her stay with us as long as she did!

Protecting Our Skin During Summer Months!!!
P
rotecting our skin is important, especially during summer. But how should we protect our skin? I am so glad you asked. The sun can do much more damage than simply give painful sunburns. Dermatologists (skin doctors) say that prolonged exposure to sunlight causes brown spots; red, scaly spots; drying and wrinkling; and worst of all, skin cancer.
Despite the increasing dangers of sun exposure, many of us get lazy when it comes to protecting our skin, or resisting the myth that getting some color from the sun makes us look healthy. The actual skin color of different people is affected by many substances, although the single most important substance is the pigment (melanin). Melanin is produced within the skin in cells and protects the body by absorbing solar radiation. In general, the more melanin there is in the skin, the more solar radiation can be absorbed. With the production of the melanin, the skin color darkens, but can also cause sunburn. UV exposure is dangerous to skin. The time when UV exposure is likely to be greatest is between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. during daylight savings time and during the late spring and early summer in North America. Nonetheless, protection from UV rays is important all year round. UV rays can be as strong on cloudy, hazy days as well as on bright, sunny ones. Another way to determine when to stay out of the sun is by following the shadow rule: “Short Shadow-Seek Shade.” The intensity of UV rays is directly related to the angle of the sun or altitude above the horizon. The shadow rule indirectly determines the sun's altitude by observing the length of a person's shadow during the course of the day. When a person's shadow is shorter than the person is tall, the intensity of the UV rays from the sun is more likely to cause sunburn. The best protection is to wear loose fitting garments made from fabric that is tightly woven. Darker colors may offer more protection than light-colored clothing, and dry clothes provide better protection than wet ones. A wide -brimmed hat that offers a lot of shade is the best choice for protecting head, face and neck. If long pants and a long sleeved shirt can not be worn because of the temperature, it is important to wear a dry T-shirt, stay in the shade as much as possible, and always wear sunscreen. To get the most protection from your sunscreen, apply it liberally at least 30 minutes before going outside and remember to re-apply it after swimming or perspiring heavily. If you are taking medication, ask your doctor or pharmacist if it will make your skin more sensitive to the sun, because certain antibiotics, birth control pills, diuretics, antihistamines, and anti-depressants can increase one's sensitivity to sun rays. Some people may have an allergic reaction to sunscreen, but you should try to apply a sunscreen with at least a SPF 15 number no matter what your skin color. Even people with very dark skin can burn and develop skin cancer. One of the things you can do is cover up and use some brand of sunscreen; and remember, protecting your skin from the sun’s rays is important also to staying healthy. On any given Sunday if the Lord stays the same, we will wake up and give Him the praise, For keeping us, blessing us, loving us, and allowing us to see another day. On any given Sunday with a roof over our head, we’ll get ready to go to a place, Where renewal, revival, worship and praise, and the Bible shows us God’s face. On any given Sunday the cars fill the lot, the angels reflect God’s traveling grace, Heading to the Church school hour for learning and studying God’s amazing ways. On any given Sunday there may be a baptism of water or spirit indeed, Buried with Christ, raised to newness of life, for whoso ever the Son did bleed. On any given Sunday the devotion is led by the Diakanates or youthful soldiers, Hymnals, prayers, praising, welcomes, and songs of how we got over. On any given Sunday the congregation awaits, with expectant prayers from the pew, For the Good news of the Gospel, the Glad tidings of peace, and the preaching of God’s truth. On any given Sunday God will heal, through His Word and Christian Fellowship, For some are saved, and relationships restored, and needs met right where we sit. On any given Sunday, the choir will sing and the Preacher will dismiss us while we are all at attention, That we should honor and love each other and not leave before the benediction. So, on any given Sunday we’ll become equipped to fight on a daily or weekly basis, To walk in the Spirit of Jesus the Christ, and shine His Love on our faces. On any given Sunday and every day we should live our lives to His glory, On any given Sunday we’ll remember His Grace and Love, and share His Salvation story.

Exodus 20:8-11New King James Version (NKJV) 8
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

Lt. Alfaro shared his 25 years’ experience with the Department saying, “He too was an Explorer; and that he wanted to be a police officer since age 14.” He was a former Marine, something he has in common with Diakonos George Lewis. Hoorahs were displayed!!! Erika Collins led in a word of prayer with the department staff. As we departed, good feelings were embraced due to the Olive Branch of love that was extended and shared by all. “Thank You” to the anonymous donor to T.I.P. giving us the ability to purchase refreshments for the officers.
