Grapes As the fruit used to produce wine or juice for Holy Communion, grapes represent the blood shed by Jesus on the cross. Grapes also symbolize fruitfulness (or lack thereof) in the life of ancient Israel and, by extension, of a Christian. “My beloved had a vineyard on a very fertile hill. ... he expected it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild grapes” (Isaiah 5:1-2, NRSV).

Dear Saints,

F

ifty years ago this summer, as the Woodstock Festival in upstate New York became a symbol of the countercultural movement, another groundswell was occurring: the Jesus Movement. In 1970, teenager Greg Laurie was baptized after a bunch of “Jesus freaks” introduced him to the Savior. The lost kid whose mom had been divorced seven times finally felt part of a family. Laurie, now pastor of a megachurch and author of Jesus Revolution (Baker Books), says the Millennial generation is ripe for another major faith movement. During a time of division and unrest that mirrors the late ’60s, people are longing for what’s “real” and relational, he writes. Our “weary, chaotic, selfiesaturated culture” needs “a big, ravishing, transcendent, and transformational vision of who God really is,” adds Laurie. “That’s what happened fifty years ago. It can happen again today.”

“40 Acres and a Mule” Reparations for African Americans

eparations debates are once again making news for formerly enslaved people (African Americans) to receive restitution for land the Confederate Army confiscated from them during the Civil War. The Federal government promised to pay former slaves, who owned land at that time for their land, a policy referred to as “40 Acres and a Mule.” But former slaves never received compensation because the policy was overturned by President Lincoln’s successor, Andres Johnson, who after becoming President, reestablished the “White Southern Rule,” the Ku Klux Klan, a secret society advocating White supremacy, and later, “ the Jim Crow Laws.” With support of reparations ending with the death of President Lincoln, the government abandoned the idea of giving freed people their 40 Acres and a Mule. In a letter written in 1890 to Democratic politician, Walter R. Vaughan of Iowa, Frederick Douglas said that the American government had failed to compensate Black people for 250 years of unpaid labor, which included building the Capital and the White House. In this letter, he states, “The Egyptian bondsmen went out with the spoils of his master, and the Russian serf was provided with farming tools and three acres of land upon which to begin life, but the Negro has neither spoils, implements, nor lands, and today, he is practically a slave on the very plantation where formerly he was driven to toil under the lash.” So true; and Black Americans are still toiling for land, shelter, tools, and even food to eat with no end in sight. How far will the debates get this time? Will they ever make it to Congress? Will Black Americans of African Descent whose parents and grandparents were former slaves ever receive what is rightly due them? No one knows! We may not ever see this in our lifetime, but God sees all and knows all, and in due time, everyone will receive a just reward. Amen!

Footprints In the Desert How Do You Think You Were Made? I am fearfully and wonderful made; besides the man and woman factor, God did it! Psalm 139:14 states, “I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works and that my soul knows very well.” Also, Jerremiah1:5, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you. Before you were born, I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.” God also knows the nature of man and the society in which we live. He knows that it is designed to beat us down. But when you know who you are in Christ Jesus, the issues of life will have no weight. They are temporary! When sickness and pain knock at your door, go to the doctor, but also seek the Lord’s counsel; do your part to get better. There’s nothing more encouraging than the testimony of God’s healing power. I also realize that no one lives forever; this is why we want our love ones to know Jesus. So when they die, we know to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Our children are dealing with their own set of issues; being bullied by other children who don’t know Christ, because if they knew Him, they would know that being a bully is wrong. When our children’s lives are affected by this, everyone is affected. People will lose their religion over their children! Bullies are usually dealing with low self-esteem and self-worth; so they take it out on the kids who seem to have good self-esteem. It’s another way the enemy uses to hurt those who serve Christ! This is why Vacation Bible School is so important. The neighborhood children can learn about Jesus in a fun, creative and loving environment. When you know better, you do better; and maybe next school year there will be fewer bullies and more children who know that they are fearfully and wonderfully made. In Christ, Peggy LaBon

The Real ID!

S

Information Everyone Needs to Know ince the Real ID law was enacted in 2018, many states, especially California has been struggling to fully implement the program in order to issue correct IDs due to certain requirements mandated by the Department of Homeland Security. However, California is on a fast track for change to speed up the

process.

Last month on Monday, July 24, 2019, all of California DMV offices were closed for a half day to give all of its employees training in issuing the Real ID. Governor Gavin Newsom’s Operations Agency Secretary, Marybel Batjer, called the process “extraordinary,” but necessary due to the number of incorrect Real ID cards the DMV has issued to Californians with temporary immigration status since 2018 (Sacramento Bee, 2018). Why the need for a Real ID? The reason a Real ID is needed is for security purpose only. If you are a person who never plans to travel on a plane or enter a Federal government building for the rest of your life, then you don’t need a Real ID. The Real ID card requires all eligible United States residents to get an updated ID card if you plan to board a plane, or enter a Federal building, a Real Id is needed. Will the Real ID keep people safe? Probably not! No one knows where danger lurks until it’s there. But it is the law and it will be enacted to the fullest extent of the law, starting October 1, 2020. There is an exception to the Real ID card, and this is a valid Passport card. If you have a Passport, which is good for ten years, this is acceptable. If you are having a Birthday soon, make an appointment to go to a DMV field office to update your ID, because it can not be done over the phone or on the Internet, in person is the only way!

ome Run is a movie about a pro baseball player Cory, played by Scott Elrod, who has a drinking problem. But after his brother is injured by a drunk driver, Cory is forced to reexamine his life to be able to take over his brother’s Little League baseball team. Cory reconnects with the son he abandoned as a baby and soon realizes the toll his drinking has had on his personal life, his career, and on the people who work with him. Home Run is an eye opener, especially for those who may be suffering from alcoholism and substance abuse. It has a story to tell if you watch it with an open mind and heart. Watch it on Netflix!

A Day In A Quiet Place

aya Angelou said, “Each person deserves a day away in which no problems are confronted, no solutions searched for. Each of us needs to withdraw from the cares which will not withdraw from us.” Similarly, when Jesus’ disciples were consumed with ministry, he urged them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest” (Mark 6:31, NIV). The late days of summer might be just the time to seek “a day away” not only from problems but even from ministry. While serving God and others can be energizing, we must balance work with rest. God set that example, resting after creating the world; Jesus set that example, calling his disciples away — not just alone, but with him — to be refreshed. Spend a relaxing day at a lake. Go on a scrapbooking retreat or a leisurely hike with a friend. Find a monastery that welcomes guests, and experience 48 hours of prayer and silence there. Invite Jesus into that time and space. And remember another message he shared: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28, NIV).

or the month of August, let’s review some of the trends we are experiencing in health care. The U. S. Health Care System’s “key” is keeping people healthy and out of the hospital. Rather than seeing people as patients, health care systems are treating people more like members. It is proposed that people who feel like they are part of a club might be more receptive to efforts to keep them healthy. So, improving the patient experience can help strengthen customer loyalty, build reputation and brand; and perhaps, improve the health of our nation. Trends Impacting Health Plans and Health Systems Convergence and Collaboration between Health Systems and Health Plans: The most successful health plans are those that are able to connect consumers to their health care. Health plans are the only players in the health care ecosystem that have a complete dataset for each insured patient. This information is important for health systems and physicians as they become more responsible for the long-term health of patients. Health care providers need health plans for their technology and their expertise in managing care, and health plans need providers because they understand care delivery and clinical effectiveness. Health Systems will continue to focus more on the Patient rather than the illness: With the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA), we expect the law to affect health systems more profoundly in 2019 as more of them choose to take on shared and full-capitation risk contracts. Many health systems are trying to figure out how to put their arms around the entire continuum of care, considering the full cradle-to-grave spectrum of care. The truth, we need to reduce injury and illness, and manage chronic diseases more effectively to reduce utilization and resource consumption. Therefore incentives will be offered to engage with the health system as early as possible to keep consumers healthier, which keep costs down. We are still likely to get sick, but we won't get as sick if we get patients (or members) into the system sooner and deal with health issues in real time before they become acute. Technology will help move Patients to the Center: No question technology is bringing profound changes to the health care experience. The opportunity today is to access the mountains of available data, but also to parse them so that they can be used in clinical decision-making. This is why digital technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI) and predictive analytics are poised to have a profound effect on the care delivery sector in 2019. Physicians spend 21 percent of their time on non-clinical paperwork. This takes away from the time they spend with patients and can contribute to burnout. Today, healthcare is more consumer-oriented than ever before. Patients can compare doctors and hospitals as easily as they can browse through restaurants on Yelp. Artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and cognitive technologies will automate many of the daily duties for physicians and clinicians to give them more time to practice medicine.

21

More Patients will consider Virtual Health: Very few of us really enjoy going to the doctor, which causes some people to wait until a condition worsens before seeking care. This mentality drives up costs, including expenses related to ER visits. Virtual health can help patients communicate directly with caregivers. The technology can help physicians see more patients, deal with rising clinical complexity, and support patients as they take a greater role in their own care. Rather than requiring a patient to physically meet with a doctor, data from a patient's electronic health records (EHR) could be used to help manage chronic illnesses without the patient having to meet with a clinician—another market signal that speaks to the increased focus on wellness for 2019. Focus will be more on Population Health: Population health takes a broad look at the management of outcomes for all health system's patients. Specifically, population health includes efforts to use health care resources more effectively and efficiently to improve the lifetime health and well-being of a specific population. In addition to disease prevention, population health activities include promoting health and well-being. In recent years, there has been recognition by health care stakeholders with many of the factors that influence our health have less to do with health care and more to do with our environment, our stressors, our income and education, and our level of social interactions, and a sense of community. While health care organizations might be grappling with how to measure the rate of incidence of these efforts, they can be critical as we shift to a focus on wellness. Even with the changes in health care systems due to the growing changes in our health care population (ever increasing senior population), the projected nursing shortage is expected to intensify. This means hospitals and health care systems will need to find creative solutions to efficiently train incoming nurses and get them in the field as quickly as possible. This is echoed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in that there will be a higher demand for nurses in long-term facilities as hospitals try to discharge patients quickly to reduce costs. So choosing a career in healthcare continues to be a viable option as technology changes the environment. As the ancient saying goes, “change is the only constant in life.” And nowhere is this more on display than in the health care market. It is believed that 2019 will be a truly pivotal year, one where competitive forces unleash real, broad-based change. The key will be to see which providers and patients adapt to realize improvements from this change, and which get left behind. Live your life healthy, Jessie M Anderson, RN BSN
