Mission Statement Second’s Gazette serves as a monthly newsletter to inform the congregants of valuable information happening on the campus of Second Baptist Church and in the community, as well as spotlight individuals and events that edify our parish church, but most importantly; glorifies the name of Jesus Christ.
More than reading, ’riting and ’rithmetic
Y
ou may recall that many followers of Jesus called him “Rabbi.” In essence, the word means teacher. Clearly the word describes the brilliant Nazarene who was constantly teaching his listeners about God and God’s expectations of humans. In a secular society, it is of paramount importance that the teachings of Christ be proclaimed and affirmed wherever possible. In the early days of our country, it was customary for public schools to teach reading, writing and arithmetic as well as Christian principles. Subjects being taught were presented in a setting of morality, religion and character development. The reading book compiled by William H. McGuffey in 1836 focused on such themes as self-denial, temperance, obedience, and warned against laziness, profanity, stealing and vanity. In our time, however, when it is difficult to focus on God and spiritual matters in public schools, our churches and families have a great responsibility. Sunday school attendance, not only for children but for adults as well, must be of primary importance. Prayer, as well as discussion of social issues from a Christian point of view, must be practiced in the home and church. We must learn and teach about Christ.

Jesus’ Prayer Request for Oneness! (John 17:20-26)
Daughters of My Flock,
I
t is so refreshing to hear someone praying for you, either calling out your name, or a reference to you to the Father. It really ignites a flame of warmth in your soul, and increases your hope toward healing. Thank you so much for praying for me that God’s will be done in my life at this junction of my pilgrimage with Him.
Jesus offers His (Commencement Prayer) to the Father for His followers and states it clearly, “That they may be one, as You Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believer You sent Me” (John 17:21). Do you believe that fulfilling the Lord Jesus’ prayer request to the Father that we may be one? Oneness among the Saints is a clear sign of Jesus’ fulfilled prayer. What are we doing to fulfill His prayer request? His prayer to the Father was not for Organic Oneness, but Spiritual Oneness! This is vital to His kingdom. The kingdom of God now is the rule and reign of Christ within us. Oneness is seen when we obey His Word and apply His Word in our actions and in fellowship. Jesus’ prayer request shows us that all the colossal energies of the cross on Calvary are consecrated to that end --Oneness! All the forces of the historic Christian faith are focused on that goal --Oneness! When we consider the birth of the Church on Sunday of A. D. 30, in Jerusalem (we call it Pentecost), with all its palpitating powers pressing toward the realization of the purpose --Oneness! All the charm and challenge of the Christian fellowship are directed toward that objective –Oneness! Thus, I call for our Spiritual Oneness in worship and service through SBC of which you have been taught from God’s Word. Now put it into action! I believe in you; I am praying for you; I love you! Amen. Until He Comes, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully,
Bishop Dr. Wm. LaRue Dillard Parish Under-shepherd

“Second’s Gazette’s First Editor”
rs. Gloria P. Blount was a member of Second Baptist for many years; she and her husband James, also deceased, were one of the first couples married by Bishop Dillard during his 40 year tenure here at SBC. Mrs. Blount served in many ministries at Second and starred in many roles at various stages of her life, but the one that shines the most here at Second was her writing and editing skills which she gave and offered to anyone free of charge. Mrs. Blount was a ghost writer for many for SBC parish members who needed a speech, a paper, or work that needed editing. She was the Gazette’s first writing editor before becoming too ill to continue. She became a teacher at age 17 at Tennessee Valley High School and taught Vacation Bible School in three states, Alabama, Tennessee, and California. In 1965, she became the first African American to hold an office position in the Duarte Unified School District when she was selected for the position as the “School Librarian” in which she prepared materials for teachers and students, wrote grants for the district to receive financial support from the government, ordered and distributed text books, and was the “go-to-person” when textbook publishers wanted to get their books in classrooms. Not only was Mrs. Blount an excellent writer and editor, she was a beloved Sister-in-Christ to her SBC family. She always had a smile on her face and in her quiet voice say, “I am well, and how are you?” Even though she hadn’t been on the campus of Second for awhile, due to illness, she was never forgotten and someone would always mention her name in various meetings, and she was named in many programs. Mrs. Blount will be listed among the “Greats” here at SBC and her legacy will never be forgotten, because Mrs. Gloria Belle Peters Sanders Blount did, when she could, what the Word of God tells us to do in Ecclesiastes 9:10 “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the grave, where you are going, there is neither working, nor planning, nor knowledge or wisdom.” … and this is the Word of God! Amen.

The Lord wants more than platitudes from those for whom He died; He longs for us to know His love, and in that love abide.
“What a Friend We Have in Jesus” What a Friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and grief’s to bear! What a privilege to carry - Everything to God in Prayer! Oh what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, All because we do not carry - Every-thing to God in prayer!
~D. De Haan
Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged - Take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful - Who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness -Take it to the Lord in prayer. Are we weak and heavy laden, Cumbered with a load of care? Precious Savior, still our refuge -Take it to the Lord in prayer In His arms He’ll take and shield thee -Thou wilt find a solace there.
A Sunday School teacher asked her class why Joseph and Mary took Jesus with them to Jerusalem . A small child replied, ‘They couldn’t get a baby-sitter.
For now, I am out! ~Danielle~

he DVD review for this month is a DVD of Life. Anyone can make a DVD of his or her life. I did when I had surgery last month. I recorded my dayto-day activities as I prepared for the surgery. I thanked God every day for the years He has given me on planet earth, all of which was recorded on the video. I am thankful God gave me the insight to make a DVD because the memory will fade as the years go by. This is a nice project for anyone faced with an unexpected challenge in life, and it is free of charge, staring “You” and your thankfulness to God. Amen!!!

7 Mountain View School District’s
Teacher of the Year 2014-2015
“Miss Sharon Durall”
S
haron Durall is a member of SBC and an 8th grade teacher at Magnolia Learning Center (MLC) and has been named Mountain View School District’s (MVSD) Teacher of the Year 2014-2015. Sharon is a loving, caring, dedicated, genuine educator who provides tremendous support to her students, who has been a valued member of the MVSD team for 12 years. In addition to teaching at MLC, she has served as Literacy Coach at Kranz Intermediate School; and because of her tireless efforts, Sharon acquired the nickname “Ms. Do-All” because of her willingness to help others. Sharon has a happy spirit and is always professional and kind to everyone she meets. MLC is an alternate education program site that service students from 5th through 8th grades. The goal of this program is to assist students in improving their academic performance and social skills and return to a regular school site learning environment. As a teacher at MLC, Ms. Durall has had many challenges. But her unconditional love, faith in her students, and the ability to connect with them, they are able to work through and resolve many of the problems they face which have made a tremendous impact on her students and the families she serves. She is a valuable asset to MLC and the community of El Monte. “As an educator, I believe every child has the potential to learn when given the appropriate materials and tools for success, although some children need different tools. But regardless of the need, every child needs unconditional love from their instructor, and to accept them wherever they are in life.” “When a child sees and feels unconditional love, it opens the door for learning. Every day I strive to meet the needs of my students no matter the situation … unconditional love is the number one tool I can give … everyone young or old, especially our children need love, encouragement, and inspiration.” Terri Thomas, Coordinator of the Alternative Education Program, stated, “Teaching is not a job, but a calling, and Ms. Durall has that calling.” Bladimir Catafia stated, “She is one of the best teachers I have ever had and I know that I can count on her anytime for help.” As a member of Second Baptist, Sharon serves in many ministries. But her love in working with children and youth has made her a valuable asset to this Body of Christ. We salute Ms. Sharon Durall for being our Spotlight Recipient, and may God continue to richly bless your life.

Mary Thompson Formally Incarcerated California Three Striker Angel Tree Speaker August 10th
A
t age 35, Mary was sentenced to 25 years-to-life under California’s Three Strike law for the theft of three articles of clothing. She left behind a young son, age 10, and many loving family members. Mary served 17 years be-hind bars in a maximum security prison until the California Three strikes law was amended November 2012, when voters decided the Three Strikes law was too harsh for nonviolent offenders. While incarcerated, Mary became an organizer, a student, a leader, a mentor, and entertainer. She earned an Associate Degree through Chaffey College; a Bachelor, a Master, and Doctorate Degrees though Christian Leadership University; and co-founded several inmate organizations and served as a mentor for incarcerated youth and the Substance Abuse programs. Mary says she was only able to make these accomplishments because of her faith in God and volunteers who poured into her life over the years. Being away from her son was painful for the both of them, but Angel Tree made it possible for her to send gifts to her son for Christmas until he turned 18. This, she says, made all the difference during this time of year when it was hardest for her and her son. Mary’s aspirations are to open several transitional living homes for all genders who are recently released from jail or prison, suffering from multiple addictions, or homeless individuals who need a fresh start. She knows what a difference the volunteers made in her own life and looks forward to making that difference in the lives of others.

Savannah Towles: Humboldt State University College life is different for everybody. It kind of depends on the person. You get influenced by a lot of things and have a different understanding of things. But all in all, it’s a great experience. Homework is definitely a lot. You have a lot of reading and writing, and math to do, which can be very tedious at times. The books are really expensive, but I’ve learned that you can always find them on the internet, or borrow from someone who has the book. It’s possible to have a social life and academic life you just have to say no sometimes and get what you need done. I have a 3.0 GPA; it was not an easy feat either. But college is fun and different. You get to experience things by yourself and make your own opinions. It’s a great experience, but you do miss your family and friends a lot, but you get through it. I would welcome a letter from my church family. Sincerely, Savannah Towles

“Take a Risk!”
Y
ou never know what’s on the other side of a “risk” until you have the courage to take it! Many risks people take don’t make a lot of sense, and we’re not talking about that kind of risk; but a good, healthy, common sense kind of risk that is sometimes necessary in life. We invest our hard earned money, we get close to new people (not just the opposite sex), we make large purchases (ever bought a lemon?), we make medical decisions (based on professional opinions), and we move to different towns, cities and states because it seemed like a very good decision at the time. Most of the time our spirit (Holy Spirit) guides us to what is good for us and we make sound choices. But then there are other times when we wonder “what happened”??? When that happens, we have to re-evaluate the decision making process we took to get there and don’t do it again! The early Jews took a chance on Jesus being who He said He was (and we know what happened there). But you can’t look back when you know you’ve made the “right choice for you!” … And the rest is HISTORY! In Acts 15:26 and Roman 16:4 both talk about men risking their lives to become believers of Christ. I took the risk too; it was the best decision I ever made! Amen.

Have You Ever Considered Your Feet?
H
ave you ever considered your feet? The American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) considers your feet a marvel of engineering. Together, your feet contain more than 50 bones, accounting for about one-fourth of all the bones in the body. And somehow, they also make room for more than 60 joints and 200 muscles, tendons, and ligaments that hold the feet together and help them move. It's not surprising that many problems can affect your feet. For starters, they have a very tough job. Over the course of your life, you put a lot of wear and tear on your feet, simply walking around on an average day pounds them with hundreds of tons of force. Your feet must last a lifetime, and most Americans log an amazing 75,000 miles on their feet by the time they reach age 50. Regular foot care can make sure your feet are up to the task. With proper detection, intervention, and care, most foot and ankle problems can be lessened or prevented. Each step you take involves a complex network of bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. This, combined with all of the weight they carry, explains why feet can have problems. To keep your feet healthy, examine them regularly, wear comfortable shoes that fit, wash them daily with soap and lukewarm water, and trim the toenails straight across, but not too short. Foot health can be a clue to your overall health. For example, joint stiffness can mean arthritis. Tingling or numbness in the feet could be a sign of diabetes. Swelling might indicate kidney disease, heart disease, or high blood pressure. Good foot care and regular foot checks are an important part of health care. If you have foot problems, be sure to talk to your doctor.

A PERSON LIKE YOU By: Anonymous
The meaning of being special, is found in a person like you. A friend who is so thoughtful, in everything they say and do. A person who betters my life, by being a part of it each day. Someone who touches my heart, in a special, and unique way. A person who's always giving, and willing to help all they can. Who truly gives from their heart, showing they care for who I am. This friend I have found in you, is as special as one could be. And I am so blessed in my life, that you've been a friend to me. Second’s Gazette
