Freedom

E

ach one of us is born most free And we alone can choose To do what God would have us do, To use what God would use.

Or, we are also free to seek The proud and selfish way — A life where other gods come first To reign and hold full sway. But when we follow where Christ leads, We find that freedom’s place Is really in God’s Will for us, And we have chosen GRACE! —Peggy Ferrell

What Attracts people To Church?

W

hy do people select a particular church? A convenient location? Yes. A good speaker in the pulpit? Yes. Inspiring music? Yes. An attractive building? Yes.

But a more essential element in attracting visitors, newcomers and prospective members is friendliness — both in the pew and throughout the community. Where there is a warm, dynamic congregation with an enthusiasm that’s contagious, visitors will usually be found, and will return.

Second’s Gazette

A church can buy many advantages with money, such as nice buildings, trained leadership, effective advertising and an abundance of supplies for spiritual and social use. But old-fashioned friendliness, of which the world is sorely in need, can’t be purchased with money. It comes only from the hearts of dedicated people who love God and enjoy helping others feel at home in their church.

Young Saints of My Flock

I thank the Lord for young Christians who are real about their Relationship and Fellowship with Christ Jesus. Relationship is when we are “Spirit Baptized” and Fellow is our daily walk with Him in “Righteousness.” Young Saints of My Parish, it has been a blessed privilege for me to serve as your Soul-Watcher for the time you have been on the campus of Second Baptist Church. Many of you have been faithful in the educational ministry and I am sure you have grown in the Word of God as a result. Some of you, perhaps, will be leaving home this year for college, away from family and friends you have met over the years. I pray that you will ever keep the moral, social, and the spiritual values taught to you. “But how do you maintain the friendships you’ve acquired here at SBC as you go your separate ways?” Let the words of Jesus guide you: “Therefore, whatever you want me to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and Prophets” (Matthew 7:12 NKJV). From the pages of my shepherding memoirs—A young member, away at college, called me and complained that she had few real friends. “What kind of friends would you like?” I asked. The young woman listed the qualities she wanted in friends. She wanted them to be faithful, loyal, caring, and share her commitment to Christ. “Then be that kind of friend to others I said and you will never lack true friends again.” In a lonely world, it’s tragic to be alone. Everyone longs for some kind of friendship. A Christian is an imitator, having been loved by Christ; we are set free to reach out to others; life will never be boring or lonely; and you will have more friends than you ever dreamed possible. Often our difficulty is in picturing what we need others to do for us. We expect little and are not disappointed. When we experience the Lord’s unlimited generosity, we begin to appreciate what a loving friend is like. A friendship revolution is started when we dare to be to others what He (Christ) has been to us. I encourage every youth to make a list of ten qualities of Christ you know as a friend. Then place a number from one to ten beside each of these qualities, with ten for the quality you emulate the best and one for the quality you find most difficult to express. Now rank the others in between; then thank Christ for your strengths and ask Him for His power to grow in the qualities where you are weakest. Amen.

Until He Come, I am Serving Christ Joyfully,

Bishop Dr. Wm. LaRue Dillard Parish Under-shepherd

Happy Birthday First Lady, Betty (Apple Blossom) Dillard!!! This beautiful flower is the prelude to an excellent fruit. July is such a special month; beside the beautiful people that have a birth day this month, our country celebrates its birthday as well!!!

I

searched “Independence Day” in Google and the movie got top billing… what is that about? Independence Day is annually celebrated on July 4th and is often known as "the Fourth of July". It is the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain in 1776, when patriotic displays and family events are organized throughout the United States. (timeanddate.com) People celebrate differently; but as long as we enjoy ourselves and stay safe, it should be a great time for all! I must admit when I began or prepare for a celebration of any kind, I always have to give God thanks! I’ve lived long enough to understand that “He didn’t have to do it, but He did” Jesus died so I could live; I do not take it for granted. Thank you Lord for granting me independence from my sins; I want to celebrate YOU every day!!

A Parable here’s a story about a church member on vacation. While hiking through a forest, he was caught in a sudden summer downpour. To escape a drenching, he crawled into a hollow log. There, safe from the rain and lulled by its steady sound, he soon fell asleep.

When the man awoke, he found that the rain had swelled the wood of the log. He was stuck. Try as he might, he couldn’t get out, and realized he might die there. The man’s life began to pass before his eyes. He thought of his unpaid church pledge and how little he had given. This made him feel so small that he was able to crawl out of the log with ease. City Councilman Larry Spicer Awarded Recognition for Dedication and Commitment to the great City of Monrovia from Bethel AME Church of Monrovia Councilman Spicer and wife Delphine celebrate with their children. All members of Second Baptist Church, Inc. Monrovia, CA The POET’S CORNER By: Eric Johnson There comes a time in this ol' life, When words cannot suffice, When all the wisdom of Solomon, Or even Mom's advice, Could cure the growing pains, that come when God says "Change!" Give up the world, The unimportant, The things that quench His grace, Pick up your cross to follow Him, Then without Him I am nothing, His power drives my life, So why am I in so much pain When I'm in church all the time? Time to let the Lord removes the prideful vale, His word reaches the very depth of my soul and spirit, I am healed! Mercy prevails, I can see His face, Hear His voice, Feel His presence, Continue this race, Share His Grace.

H

ey SBC! Today I am brining you someone who is a gospel icon and no stranger to SBC. He is a phenomenal man of God and his gifts include; musician, choir director, songwriter- producer. He is Mr. Brent Jones. Brent sends messages of encouragement, hope and the Word of God through his music. He is director of M.O.M at Friendship Baptist Church in Yorba Linda, California. Some of his songs include one of my favorites; “Don’t Wait to Midnight,” “Holy Holy,” and “Goodtime,” just to name a few; and he has a new hit single titled “He Rose.” The song has a groove, but Brent keeps it real. He has also collaborated with multiple gospel artists including the TP Mobb. Brent is married and has a daughter; he currently resides in Washington. So SBC, you know how we do it. Let’s keep our brother Mr. Brent Jones in our prayers as he continues with his big comeback P.S.: I want to wish my beloved Mom Lady Betty G. Dillard a very special, blessed “Happy Birthday!” I love you. For now, I am out! ~Danielle~

M

s. Kathleen Dantzler was born in Cleveland, Ohio. She was 2 years old when her parents, and siblings, relocated to Southern California, making their home in Pasadena. Ms. Kathleen resides in Monrovia, California and has been a member of Second Baptist Church since November 1989. Ms. Kathleen said that she started taking piano lessons when she was in Third Grade; and in Fourth Grade, she started taking violin lessons and continued till 7th Grade; and then started back taking piano lessons. In High School, she joined the band and graduated from John Muir High School in Pasadena a semester early. Ms. Kathleen continued her education by attending college and studying music. She said it was in college that she had a personal encounter with Jesus Christ after being invited to watch movies about “A Thief in the Night and A Distant Thunder,” stating that the movies convicted her so much that she was saved at age 19 and has never looked back. She graduated from California State University Los Angeles with a Bachelor’s of Art in Music and completed graduate work in Child Development and Education. Ms. Kathleen is an active member of the following ministries at SBC: Children’s Church, Philemon Prison Ministry, and a Sunday School Teacher. She said that during her early years in Children’s Church, she would occasionally practice music with the children and discovered there were hand bells that hadn’t been used in years so she organized the “All-Boys Hand-Bell Choir.” A few years later, she started directing the Christian Cadets Children Choir where she presently serves as Director of Music for Children’s Church Ministry. Ms. Kathleen stated that it was through this experience of working in Children’s Church that her passion of music was re-awakened, and a desire to teach music more often. She went back to school and received a second teaching credential which authorized her to teach music in grades K-12. She said that she also started attending workshops and training classes to hone her music skills. She started offering afterschool enrichment classes in jazz appreciation, piano, recorder, percussion, and guitar to boys and girls in Third Grade at the school where she works. Ms. Kathleen shared that, “All of the work I have done, on my own time, is finally paying off. I have been offered a full-time Elementary Music Teacher position with the Los Angeles Unified School District that starts the August 2014-2015 school year. Although I have gone through some ups and downs, and mistakes of my own doing, God has been good to me. There is one verse that I keep in my heart as a promise of God’s favor to me.” Psalm 84:11, “For the Lord God is a sun and shield; The Lord will give grace and glory; No good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly.” This is the Word of God! Ms. Kathleen, we wish you all the best and God’s continued blessings in your new position for the upcoming school year. Amen!

Live Life Healthy, An Important Contributor to the “STATE” of Our Health Sleep is as essential to our health as diet and exercise. Inadequate sleep can result in fatigue, depression, concentration problems, illness and injury. Not only do different age groups need different amounts of sleep, sleep needs also vary by individuals. Just like any other characteristics you are born with, the amount of sleep you need to function best may be different for you than for someone who is of the same age and gender. The key question is how much is too much or too little? Let's discuss sleep loss and insomnia [in-som-nee-uh] problems. Sleep loss generally, in adults, refers to sleep of shorter duration than the average basal need of 7 to 8 hours per night. The main symptom of excessive sleep loss is daytime sleepiness. Other symptoms include depressed mood, poor memory or concentration. Insomnia is defined as having difficulty falling asleep, maintaining sleep, or short sleep duration despite adequate opportunity for a full night’s sleep. Other insomnia symptoms include daytime consequences such as tiredness, lack of energy, difficulty concentrating, and/or irritability. These two conditions may cause similar reductions in sleep length for any individual case. Most experts agree that adults need seven to nine hours of sleep a night. But in the end, it must be noted that we can often go a long time with little or even no sleep and continue to function. Regardless of what's causing your sleep problems, it is important to establish and maintain healthy sleep habits. Most importantly, make sleep a priority. You must schedule sleep like any other daily activity, so put it on your “to-do list” and cross it off every night. But don’t make it the thing you do only after everything else is done – stop doing other things so you get the sleep you need. http://sleepfoundation.org http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK19961/

Blessed To Be a Blessing by BaLinda Reneé, SBC TIP Booster

he past years have been a blessing. Dylan and I began our journey at Second Baptist Church 15 years ago by joining the Nursery. He sang and played drums for the “Pee Wee Choir” moving on at age 4 to Children’s Church where he continued his love for drums as he continued his foundational learning of God.

Now we are here with Teens in Progress, T.I.P. As a parent of a teenager life has changed drastically and the only way to keep up and understand some of the changes is to align myself in support of our youth Ministry. We have some amazing young people at our church, but you won’t know how amazing until you begin to cultivate a face-to-face relationship. On July 23 and 24 during Vacation Bible School we are going to have insightful training and planning sessions to help those who want to be involved with T.I.P. Let’s keep the tradition of putting our young people and children first by supporting Vacation Bible School making it a “Family Thang”. If you are interested in working with our teens, please email me at balindadillard@yahoo.com for additional information. Stay tuned...the best is yet to come.
