Blessed to be A Blessing

G

od promised Abram, “I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you … so that you will be a blessing” (Genesis 12:2, NRSV). Especially on the Fourth of July, we in the United States remember that God has blessed us as a nation, too.

That isn’t to say everyone here has an equal share of resources. Our government isn’t perfect, and our land isn’t necessarily more beautiful than any other place on earth. It doesn’t mean we alone model “liberty and justice for all” — or that we do so flawlessly.

Rather, God’s promise to Abram and us means we aren’t to hoard our blessings. We are to share our wealth generously, cultivate liberty and justice, and pass on to the world the gifts we enjoy in this land.

Dare to Risk Doing What the Lord Could Do Through You!

Saints of My Flock,

H

ere is a message that blasts the cap off our limited perception of what is possible: “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son” (John 14:12, 13).

Do you feel the atmosphere of His presence as you read this passage? I pray that by my epistle, you will be consumed by His words because of His faithfulness to us. My heart is ablaze with the possibility of the victory God will perform through you.

“Greater works than these he will do.” Grater in extent through the world-wide preaching of the gospel; its effect will be (the spiritual redemption, and placing in the body of Christ multitudes of people since the day of Pentecost (Birth of the Church). These will be done through prayer in His name.

The longer I live in the adventure of the Christian faith and share deeply with you what you are discovering about God, the more I have been led to a liberating conviction that: the Lord loves us and cares more about our concerns than we do.

He is the Lord of radical interventions. On time, and in time, He invades our problems and perplexities with supernatural power. I have experienced times when He actually leads us into challenges and opportunities in order to astound us with what He is able to do with our impossibilities.

I plead with you to attempt to do something He’s revealed He wants you to do that’s crucial to you, and others. You will realize His power in your lives. We do serve the Lord of the impossible.

I love you! I wish God’s very best for you! Amen.

Adele Davis Adele Davis-A Singing Member of SBC Family

H

ey SBC, today I am brining you someone who is a very special lady, and a member of SBC. She is a singer, a mother and grandmother, and a “Woman of God.” She is originally from Philadelphia, PA, but has lived in Southern California a long time. Now some of you might be trying to figure out who is this special individual. Well it’s our own Sister, Ms.

Adele Davis.

Adele sung with a lot of church groups in Philadelphia before being offered an interview with the famous Clara Ward Singers. A week after the interview, she found herself singing with the amazing Ms. Clara Ward in the village in New York.

After finishing the job in New York, she drove with the Clara Ward Singers, to Los Angeles, California and sung at Disneyland for 3 months. When the Disneyland job ended, they went back to New York to sing with James Brown and Tammi Tirrell at the famous Apollo Theater. Adele has also sung for the show "Who Nanny" in Dallas, Texas.

Something you might not know about Sister Adele is that she was in a play called "Tambourines to Glory," which was written by Langston Hughes, where she co-starred with Luis Gossip, Jr. The play ran at a little theater in New York. Sadly, it was the same year that President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

Ms. Davis has traveled the United States singing gospels songs; and about 11 years ago, she was reunited with the famous Clara Ward Singers where they traveled to Europe and performed in 21 countries in Europe for two and a half months.

Adele’s first visit to Second Baptist Church was in 1963 to sing for a fundraiser as a Ward singer. She was so impressed with the senior choir that three years later she, her husband, and daughter joined Second Baptist Church and has been a member since 1966.

Today, Adele is the mother of one daughter, two-stepsons and 10 grandchildren. She is now retired from the United States’ Attorney Office, but she stills remains active singing from time to time at special functions with the remaining Clara Wards Singers and her church choir. She serves on the Senior Usher Board at Second Baptist, and sings for special engagements. Her favorite pass time is traveling, painting, crocheting, and baking carrot cakes. Her favorite Scripture is Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” So say the staff of the Gazette.

Sister Adele, Bishop Dillard, Second’s Gazette and the entire SBC Family is proud to present you as a Member to Spotlight. To God be the Glory for all the singing you have done and continues to do in His Name. Amen!

eunited and it feels so good, especially the second time. Elder Barrak and Diane Saleem took the plunge for the second time but this time under Bishop Dillard on June 9, 2013 in front of friends, family and their church family.

The bride sparkled and blushed in her tangerine kissed dressed as the groom looked on in complete amazement and awe at his future wife.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

One Goode Invention

A

ll need it; some can’t get enough of it; some get too little of it; and some, it escapes; it’s Sleep. In today’s modern times, many have the luxury and space to sleep in beds of various sizes, comfort levels, and designs. But after the Civil War ended and many African Americans received their freedom, they were not afforded these comforts, or even considered them.

Many former slaves moved North for better opportunities. They became working-class citizens who owned their own apartments that were too small to hold furniture, let alone a bed. Mrs. Sarah Goode, an inventor and entrepreneur, noticed this problem and designed a solution. She invented a cabinet bed.

Mrs. Goode was born into slavery in 1850, and like many of her customers, she gained her freedom after the Civil War and moved to Chicago where she and her husband, who was a carpenter, owned a furniture store. Seeing as her patrons had limited space, Mrs. Goode designed the cabinet bed to serve as a roll top desk, complete with compartments for stationery and other writing supplies, as well as a bed. Ms. Goode received a patent for her invention on July 14, 1885 from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. She was the first African American woman to receive such a patent. Sarah Goode died in 1905.

Although we may not know what greatness our lives may hold like Mrs. Goode, God knows. Born into slavery and receiving her freedom years later, Sarah Goode did not let her circumstances deter her from her goals. God knew she would be the first African American women to receive a patent for her invention and that her ideas would still be used today. Just as God knows the circumstances we go through and still help us to overcome to get to our greatness. No matter the circumstances, the difficulties, or the obstacles, God knows, and wants you to be the best you He made you to be, just like Mrs. Sarah Goode.

e are celebrating our Nation’s Independence from Britain on July 4, 1776 and we have enjoyed the progression of “FREEDOM” ever since. But by many accounts, all are not free!

Ephesians 2: 19 say, “Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of His household.”

The greatest freedom we can enjoy is in God’s only begotten Son Christ Jesus; there are no strong holds that He cannot free us from. There are no chains His love can’t break; and no injustice His grace can’t correct, and then justify us in Him. This is the best household or family to be in.

I can enjoy the freedom of being an American citizen a lot more than my Mom and Dad could in the south many years ago, and I want my kids to enjoy it even more. Each generation should be stronger and wiser than the last. There are more opportunities to be whatever you what to be in life. Just don’t forget the past, or in some way, it will be repeated.

So while we celebrate Independence Day, let’s keep our youths in prayer, and educate them on their families past. They are our future!

ey SBC, today I am bringing you someone who has been in the gospel industry for 20 plus years. He was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. He is pastor, singer, song writer, and musician.

Okay, with no further ado, here is Bishop Hezekiah Walker, who is the senior pastor of Love Fellowship Tabernacle Church, in Brooklyn, NY. He has released multiple albums and CD’s. Some of my favorites are “Jesus Is My Help,” “99 ½ Just Won’t Do,” “Power Belongs to God,” “I Need You to Survive,” “Second Chance,” and “I Am Souled Out.” In all of these songs, there is a message of encouragement and the love of God. Mr. Walker has released a new album titled, “Azusa, the Next Generation.” One song on the album is awesome, which is called “Every Praise.” It has a special groove that’s not too fast, but right for praise.

Hezekiah has two choirs; the first is the famous Love Fellowship Crusade Choir and the Love Fellowship Tabernacle Choir. He has sung with other famous Gospel artists such as Marvin Sapp, Shirley Caesar, and many others. Now that’s saying something. Moreover, he has performed on award shows, spoke at music conferences, and conducted seminars throughout the country.

God Himself does not propose to judge a man until he is dead. So why should you?

He has churches in New York, Pennsylvania, and in Capetown, South Africa. Mr. Walker says that he lives by the three “P” principles which are {Prayer, Praise, and Preaching}. Alright SBC Family, we know what to do. Let’s keep Bishop Hezekiah Walker in our prayers.

L

et’s review some tips about a common fun summer activity - Swimming!!! As the summer heat intensifies, many of us enjoy swimming, or just being in the water whether at home, in a neighbor or community pool, at the beach, or a favorite "water spot." However, be mindful that drowning is the number one cause of injuries and deaths for children between ages 1 and 4, according to the U. S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

A new report out May 2013, from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), reveals that children younger than age 5 represent more than 75% of all pool and spa submersion deaths, and 78% of submersion injuries in the United States involving children younger than 15 years of age. Government data also show that African-American and Hispanic children between the ages of 5 and 14 are at higher risk of drowning.

African American children between the ages of 5 and 19 are six times more likely to drown in pools than white and Hispanic children that age, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Data from USA Swimming indicate that 70% of African American children and 62% of Hispanic children cannot swim, making them more likely to drown.

The American Red Cross suggests owners/parents make pool safety a priority by following these guidelines:

       

Secure pools with appropriate barriers with a 4 feet high fence or barrier with a self-closing, self-latching gate.

Place safety covers on pools or hot tubs when not in use and remove any ladders or steps used for access.

Consider installing a pool alarm that goes off if anyone enters the pool.

Keep children under active supervision at all times. Stay in arm’s reach of young kids.

Designate a responsible person to watch the water when people are in the pool—never allow anyone to swim alone.

Have young or inexperienced swimmers wear a life jacket.

Keep pools or hot tubs water clean and clear. Maintain proper chemical levels, circulations, and filtration.

Enforce rules and safe behaviors, such as “no diving,” “stay away from drain covers,” “swim with a buddy,” and “walk please.”

Ensure everyone in the home knows how to swim, as well as response to emergencies by having appropriate safety equipment and taking water safety, first aid, and CPR. These simple steps can save the lives of a swimmer that you love!

Make Water Safety a Priority -- Contact your local Red Cross for more information on learning to swim, water safety, home pool safety, First-Aid, and CPR classes.
