GRATITUDE WHICH ISSUES IN CREATIVE PRIDE! Sons and Daughters of my Flock, Grace to you! Congratulations on celebrating 115 years as an established Christian Church of the evangelical Baptist Faith here in the city of Monrovia. “I have reason to glory in Christ Jesus in the things which pertain to God. For I will not speak of those things which Christ has not accomplished through me, in word and deed…” (Romans 15:17-18). We, the saints of this parish, are inheritors of a noble, established holy faith. The first congregants endured under hard trials back in 1902, but they remained steadfast, faithful and true to their belief with pride. Today we celebrate March 4, 2017, with joy and pride for what the Lord has done. I am grateful as I serve as the 15 th under-shepherd of this parish and I do so with much pride of what the Lord has accomplished under my seer ship over the past 43 years. Is it wrong to be proud? We talk so much about the evil of pride. How can we be proud in the sense of being satisfied without the sin of pride? When we think of the present and God call upon this holy band of saints to carry on the legacy by building on the foundation of the first congregants ambition, we can understand by a clearer translation of the Greek meaning of the text. What is suggested is a formula for creative pride. “So, do not become proud, but stand in awe” (RSV). Without Christ Jesus, we could do nothing of any value. God speaks through Paul and he says he speaks of the same quality of pride in his epistle to the Corinthians, and yet at the same time he exposes the wrong kind of pride. Pride is a sin whenever it prompts us to play God over ourselves or anyone else. We, saints can afford to play God only if we are willing to assume the responsibilities of God and that’s frightening indeed! While we celebrate, we recognize God’s gifts in us or the saints and other people we love or the things we do. Then there is a deep sense of gratitude which issues in creative pride. Thank God for Second Baptist Church congregants who take pride in their parish church by laboring righteously for God. Amen Until He Comes, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully, Bishop Dr. Wm. LaRue Dillard Parish Under-shepherd
