Why We Celebrate
J
esus is a redeemer, a restorer in every way. His day on the cross looked like a colossal failure, but it was his finest moment. He launched a kingdom where the least will be the greatest and the last will be first, where the poor will be comforted and the meek will inherit the earth. Jesus brought together the homeless with the privileged and said, “You’re all poor, and you’re all beautiful.” The cross leveled the playing field, and no earthly distinction is valid anymore. There is a new “us” — people rescued by the Passover Lamb, adopted into his family and transformed into saints. It is the most epic miracle in history. That is why we celebrate. —Jen Hatmaker, 7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess

THE BISHOP’S EPISTLE
What Mood Are You Nursing Today? .
I
read where God said, “Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength? (Nehemiah 8:10).
Sons and Daughters, Speaking of moods, we all have them. God has given saints the Holy Spirit. He lives within us, and it is He who gives the power to stand firm against bad moods. Good moods, bad moods, glad moods, sad and mad moods, they make us feel just great or just blue. Elated or deflated! Because of them, we have sunny days and gloomy days … hours of self-confidence and hours of pity. Moods are the temporary feelings which dominate our state of mind. They are capricious and tyrannical. Our dispositions and our attitudes are controlled by our moods. The people close to us are either blessed by them or blamed for them. Controlling our moods, as Christians, is unconquered frontier for many of us. There are four scripture passages which have helped me personally, and have become the basis of my theory about how to change our bad moods. The first is a promise; the second, an assurance; the third, a challenge; and the fourth, an admonition. Nehemiah promised, “The joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10). The Lord Jesus assured the saints of joy. “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full” (John 15:11 NKJV). As it was with them, so it is with us. The Philippian church was challenged: “Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4). The Apostle admonished the Christians in Rome; “Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath;” for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay, says the Lord” (Romans 12:19 NKJV). All four passages of scripture were spoken to liberate God’s people who faced a mood of depression. Your moral and spiritual lives need to be rebuilt. Let this day and every day be holy unto our God in our lives, for it will replace our bad moods and people will be blessed. Amen.
Until He Comes, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully,

“A Family Hero”
n 1942, James C. Warren, a 19-year-old underprivileged Black man from Gurley, Alabama, read an article in American Magazine titled, “I Got Wings,” written by Second Lieutenant Charles H. Debow. The article touched James deeply, because Debow was one of the first Black cadets to graduate from the Tuskegee Army Air Field, and earn Silver wings. “I was so proud; it brought tears to my eyes” recalled Warren. “The thought of ever being a part of that program never even touched my mind.” Determined to overcome the odds for young Black men with limited resources and racial discrimination, in 1943, James Warren became one of the original members of the famed Tuskegee Airmen; and after 35 years of military service, retired with the distinct title of Lieutenant Colonel. Colonel Warren served in WWII with the 477th Bombardment Group. He was among the first Black officers arrested during the “Freeman Field Mutiny” in 1945 where 162 Black Airmen were arrested for demanding lawful entry into the White officer’s club at the Freeman Field in Indiana. Long before Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks disobeyed busing laws in Montgomery, Alabama, Warren and his group of Black officers were the first to challenge the United States government on civil rights issues. The achievements of Lt. Colonel James Warren did not stop there. Because of his diligence and convincing research 50 years after the incident at Freemen Field, the Air Force removed all reprimands from the permanent military records of all the arrested Black officers. This hero is the Uncle of our own Mrs. Hazzell Smith, surname; Hazzell James Warren, her middle name is her Uncle James first name. A little known fact! Reference: Warren, J. (2001). irst, I want to say Happy Birthday BISHOP WILLIAM LARUE DILLARD!!! What a blessing you have been to so many! SBC would not be SBC without you!
I was reading a story from “Our Daily Bread,” which was titled: “Positive Repetition!” The story talks about repeating what you don’t want so much, until you get exactly what you don’t want. That seems unlikely, but in that story it was true. Maybe the moral of the story is to say what you want, not what you don’t want! 1 Peter 4:11 says, “If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory and the power for ever and ever, Amen.” When we pray and when we speak with others, we should always say what we mean, and mean what we say. We should ask ourselves, is it true, is it kind, and is it necessary? Thank you Bishop Dillard for bringing the word of God with clarity! Blessings! ...

Fit for A King
A
crown of thorns is around his brow, as if he were a king. And truly he was a king, and he never was more kingly than in that hour. • He was kingly in his bearing. He made no plea in his own defense.
• He was kingly, too, in his love. There had not been a shade of bitterness in his heart, under all the cruelties and sufferings he had endured. … • He was kingly also in his suffering. His was a crown of sorrow, for he was the Redeemer of sinners. Thorns were the fruit of sin, and he took our curse upon him — that we might receive a crown of life. He was subjected to shame in the eyes of the world — that we might be welcomed to glory. Never was he more kingly than he was on that dreadful, yet glorious day. —J.R. Miller

W
e are still addressing IMPROVING OUR HEALTH and how our weight can be a factor in maintaining healthy bodies, because it is important that we are good stewards in every area of our life.
Over the past two months, we have discussed “How To Get Started” and “How to Make Good Food Choices.” Let's continue with how to make our food choices work. When practicing good food and beverage choices, some things to remember: Cover half of your plate with fruits and veggies, and high-fiber foods like beans and whole-grain breads and cereals. Fruits and veggies may be fresh, canned in 100 percent fruit juice, frozen, or dried; and may be whole, cut up, or pureed. Look for low or no salt options when buying canned or frozen veggies. Choose a healthy option like salad topped with grilled chicken (not fried), or ask for a side of steamed veggies instead of fries when you eat out. Choose water, fat-free milk, or sugar-free coffee or tea rather than sugary beverages. Commit to eating and drinking fewer foods, beverages, and snacks that have solid fats and/or added sugars. Many foods and beverages have empty calories (calories from solid fats and/or added sugars). Calories from solid fats and added sugars are often called empty calories because they have few or no nutrients. Solid fats (or saturated fats) are fats that are solid at room temperature, like butter and shortening. Some solid fats are found naturally in foods. They can also be added to foods like potato chips. Added sugars are sugars and syrups that are added to foods or beverages like sodas, and other processed foods. Solid fats and added sugars can add a lot of calories to what we eat and drink. A small amount of empty calories is okay, but most people get too many. We can limit empty calories by consuming foods and beverages with less empty calories, or by decreasing what we eat and drink. Try these tips to reduce, or cut empty calories! Replace snacks like chips and sweets with fat-free yogurt or baby carrots. Buy low-fat and sugar-free versions of your favorite snacks to limit the amount of empty calories eaten or drunk. Check to see that these products have fewer calories than the regular products. Limit salt! Sodium (salt) can increase blood pressure. The Dietary Guidelines advise that African Americans should aim for no more than 1,500 mg of salt a day, including sodium from processed foods. Before buying packaged foods, read the Nutrition Facts label to find out how much sodium, solid fat and other nutrients are in one serving of the food. The label also tells how many servings are included in the package Next month, “How Do I Burn Those Calories?” http://www.niddk.nih.gov/health-information/health-topics/weight-control/improving/Pages/improving-you-health-tips-forafrican-americans.aspx

Why Did God
Why Did You Make Me Black Lord , Why did you make me black? Why did you make someone the world would hold back? Black is the color of dirty clothes, of grimy hands and feet... Black is the color of darkness, of tired beaten streets... Why did you give me thi lips, a broad nose and kinky hair? Why did you create someone who receives the hated stare? Black is the color of the bruised eye when someone gets hurt... Black is the color of darkness, black is the color of dirt. Why is my bone structure so thick, my hips and cheeks so high? Why are my eyes brown, and not the color of the sky? Why do people think I'm useless? How come I feel so used? Why do people see my skin and think I should be abused? Lord, I just don't understand... What is it about my skin? Why is it some people want to hate me and not know the person within? Black is what people are "Labeled" when others want to keep them away... Black is the color of shadows cast... Black is the end of the day. Lord you know my own people mistreat me, and you know this just ain't right... They don't like my hair, they don't like my skin, as they say I'm too dark or too light! Lord, don't you think it's time to make a change? Why don't you redo creation and make everyone the same? Make Me Black?
ick
God's Reply: Why did I make you black? Why did I make you black? I made you in the color of coal from which beautiful diamonds are formed... I made you in the color of oil, the black gold which keeps people warm. Your color is the same as the rich dark soil that grows the food you need... Your color is the same as the black stallion and panther, Oh what majestic creatures indeed! All colors of the heavenly rainbow can be found throughout every nation... When all these colors are blended, you become my greatest creation! Your hair is the texture of lamb's wool, such a beautiful creature is he... I am the shepherd who watches them, I will ALWAYS watch over thee! You are the color of the midnight sky, I put star glitter in your eyes... There's a beautiful smile hidden behind your pain... That's why your cheeks are so high! You are the color of dark clouds from the hurricanes I create in September... I made your lips so full and thick, so when you kiss...they will remember! Your stature is strong, your bone structure thick to withstand the burden of time... The reflection you see in the mirror, that image that looks back, that is MINE! So get off your knees, look in the mirror and tell me what you see? I didn't make you in the image of darkness... I made you in the image of ME!

The Greatest Love of Them All very year, on the weekend known by many as Valentine’s Day Weekend, the Mission of Mercy Ministry (MOM) supports Teens in Progress (TIP) as they take to the streets of Shamrock and Huntington, displaying notes of the “Greatest Love of Them All.”
The concept of a ‘Street Rally’ was birthed in 2009 from an experience that MOM President witnessed, ultimately inspiring her to bring such an outreach to the campus of SBC. Since 2009, TIP has reached hundreds, if not thousands of people, with their signs with such sayings as: (Jesus is Life, I Corinthians 13:4; Jesus Loves You, John 3:16; You Are Not Alone). These are teens who are not ashamed of the Gospel, and are willing to take to the streets to let everyone know about their love for Christ. This year, people pulled over and stopped to pray for us, talked with us, and encouraged us to continue and be strong. It speaks volume that people felt so strongly that, beyond honking their horns in support, they were led to stop and let us know how great it was that we were out on the streets. Thank you so much Mission of Mercy Ministry (MOM) for sponsoring (prayers, snacks, and signs) for this annual outreach event.
