Mission Statement econd’s Gazette serves as a monthly newsletter to inform the congregants of valuable information happening on the campus of Second Baptist Church and in the community, as well as spotlight individuals and events that edify our parish church, but most importantly; glorifies the name of Jesus Christ.

other’s Day was not nationally recognized until 1914, but we all know motherhood is as old as Adam and Eve.
Anna M. Jarvis (1864-1948) loved her mother dearly. It was Miss Jarvis who first suggested a national day to honor all mothers. At a memorial service for her mother on May 10, 1908, Anna gave a carnation, her mother’s favorite flower, to each person in attendance. Within a few years, the idea to honor mothers gained popularity, and Mother’s Day was soon observed annually in many large cities of the United States. On May 9, 1914, by an act of congress, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day. He established the day as a time for “public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country.” By then, it had become customary to wear white carnations in honor of departed mothers and red carnations to honor the living. The custom continues to this day.

Sons and Daughters of My Flock, Grace to You!
T
he benediction of divine blessings will be bestowed upon us for all that we attempt to do for the Lord’s kingdom. The Bible speaks: “Grace, Mercy, and Peace will be with you from God the Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the son of the Father, in truth and love” (II John 3).
Jitters, “extreme nervousness,’ come when we attempt to glorify the Lord in Christian service. But jitters can be cured by accepting God’s blessings as given through John the beloved Apostle of Christ Jesus. When I reread this Epistle, it rekindled in my mind the greeting I often use to you in my Love Epistle, “My Parish Flock.”Let me relate a situation in my own life. I contemplated an unresolved problem that had overloaded the circuits of my emotions. I re-examined to be sure that John’s greeting would be an opportunity to experience fresh grace, mercy, and peace in my life and that of my parish flock. I am assured that: “God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind” (II Timothy 1:7). I turned each of the words over in my mind. Then I discovered a new insight. There is a progression in these words. One follows the other irrevocably:
Grace is God’s unchanging nature Mercy is His nature applied to the Saints’ needs, and
That is liberating … we can be sure that God’s grace, His unmerited favor toward His own, is as predictable as the sunrise. He will not deny or contradict Himself. We can count on that! His mercy is involved, identifying love. He will be in the situations we fear in the now, as well as in the future. By His providence, “all things will work together for good” and His plan revealed to those in Christ Jesus. Peace settles in our hearts when we really believe that and labor for His kingdom. We can think about what God is. Mercy is experienced in our emotions. We feel loved and that love casts out fear and anxiety. Peace is volitional. We received it only after we have surrendered our will to God’s will at all costs. God says to us: “In an acceptable time I have heard you. An in the day of salvation, I will have helped you” (II Corinthians 6:2). “Those whom the Son sets free, is free indeed!” Amen. Until He Comes, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully, Bishop Dr. Wm. Someone Everyone Should Know and Be Proud Of!!!

ho Was Henrietta Lacks? This is a name that I had never heard of until a few days ago when a message appeared on my Black Voices page asking me this question. I was curious to know who she was. Since I had never heard of Henrietta Lacks, I continued to read. Henrietta Lacks was an American Woman of African Decent whose cancer cells were instrumental in Scientists developing the HeLa Cell Line for cancer research. She was born on August 1, 1920 in Roanoke, Virginia and died on October 4, 1951 in Baltimore, Maryland.
Mrs. Lacks died of Cervical Cancer at Johns Hopkins Hospital where her cells were harvested and used in medical research. For more than a half century, her cells have been used to provide Scientists with advancement in such research as the vaccine for Polio and numerous cancers, including Aids and a number of other diseases, and they are still being used today. Some may think that this is the work of Scientists. But believers in the Holy faith know that this is the work of God, who created the heavens and earth, and all therein, including Henrietta Lacks cells, were His creation and made for a purpose. Amen!

raise God from whom all blessings flow!!! It’s another joyful day in an otherwise corrupt society… but GOD is still in control!
John 17:11-13 states, “Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept and none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves” (NKJV). It is now very apparent to believers that we are in or approaching the last days. There’s so much visual descent, “alternative facts,” disrespect of God’s Word and His people! Nevertheless, it is still our job, as believers, to tell a dying world that Jesus lives! So I want to encourage you to continue the good fight; do not grow weary in doing good, for in due season we shall reap our reward if we don’t faint, paraphrasing Galatians 6:9. Let us continue to celebrate life! Congratulations on Bishop Dillard’s 43rd Jubilee! To all the Graduates, Congratulations! Happy Birthdays, Happy Anniversaries, and don’t worry, be happy! Answer: Being a mother is a very important role that the Lord chooses to give to many women. A Christian mother is told to love her children (Titus 2:4-5), in part so that she does not bring reproach on the Lord and on the Savior whose name she bears. Children are a gift from the Lord (Psalm 127:3-5). In Titus 2:4, the Greek word philoteknos appears in reference to mothers loving their children. This word represents a special kind of “mother love.” The idea that flows out of this word is that of caring for our children, nurturing them, affectionately embracing them, meeting their needs, and tenderly befriending each one as a unique gift from the hand of God. Several things are commanded of Christian mothers in God’s Word: Availability – morning, noon, and night (Deuteronomy 6:6-7) Involvement – interacting, discussing, thinking, and processing life together (Ephesians 6:4) Teaching – the Scriptures and a biblical worldview (Psalm 78:56; Deuteronomy 4:10; Ephesians 6:4) Training – helping a child to develop skills and discover his/her strengths (Proverbs 22:6) and spiritual gifts (Romans 12:3-8 and 1 Corinthians 12) Discipline – teaching the fear of the Lord, drawing the line consistently, lovingly, firmly (Ephesians 6:4; Hebrews 12:5-11; Proverbs 13:24; 19:18; 22:15; 23:13-14; 29:15-17) Nurture – providing an environment of constant verbal support, freedom to fail, acceptance, affection, unconditional love (Titus 2:4; 2 Timothy 1:7; Ephesians 4:29-32; 5:1-2; Galatians 5:22; 1 Peter 3:8-9) Modeling with Integrity – living what you say, being a model from which a child can learn by “catching” the essence of godly living (Deuteronomy 4:9, 15, 23; Proverbs 10:9; 11:3; Psalm 37:18, 37). The Bible never states that every woman should be a mother. However, it does say that those whom the Lord blesses to be mothers should take the responsibility seriously. Mothers have a unique and crucial role in the lives of their children. Motherhood is not a chore or unpleasant task. Just as a mother bears a child during pregnancy, and just as a mother feeds and cares for a child during infancy, so mothers also play an ongoing role in the lives of their children, whether they are adolescents, teenagers, young adults, or even adults with children of their own. How to Take Care of Joint Pain
C
reaky achy joints, a twinge in the knee, a sharp shooting pain from the shoulder to the elbow, no big deal, right? Wrong! All too often we assume joint pain is a normal part of aging that we just have to learn to live with. Nothing could be further from the truth experts report, pointing to a wealth of treatment options from exercise to medications and surgery.
Pain is not only the experience of hurting; it affects how you handle your life, your livelihood, and interactions with family and friends. Joint is discomforting pain or inflammation arising from any part of a joint, including cartilages, bones, ligaments, tendons and muscles. Arthritis is a catch-all term that simply means inflammation of the joints, but it's not a simple diagnosis. There are now over 100 different forms of recognized arthritis, which is why getting the correct diagnosis is important in order to get the right treatment. Joint pain can be mild, causing soreness only after certain activities, or it can be severe, making even limited movement, particularly bearing weight, extremely painful. Some examples of joint pain that have causes that aren't due to underlying disease include overuse such as heavy physical activity, lack of use, sprains or strains. There are many different conditions that can lead to painful joints such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis, and gout. Joint pain is extremely common. In a national survey, about one-third of adults reported having joint pain within the past 30 days, with knee pain being the most common complaint, followed by shoulder and hip pain and as people age, joint pain become increasingly more common. The treatment for joint pain depends on the underlying cause. Whatever the cause of joint pain, you can usually manage it with medication, therapy, or alternative treatments. Doctors should first try to diagnose and treat the condition that is causing the joint pain. The goal is to reduce the pain and inflammation, and preserve joint function. Treatments range from lifestyle changes to medications to surgery and normally, should be tried in that order. For some people, particularly seniors who are taking multiple medications for other conditions such as high blood pressure, doctors may decide which painkiller to prescribe based on what is safest for your condition. It is important for seniors to never self-medicate to relieve pain. Always consult a doctor before taking any drugs even if they are sold over the counter. Let pharmacists know about other drugs that have been prescribed to you by other physicians and be sure to ask about dosage, which can vary according to age. Live Life Healthy,

hat a blessing to have a young man of God bless the men of Second Baptist Church in Monrovia with his unique perspective on his personal relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ. Joshua, standing on the Word of God from John 14: 1-4 and John 16: 33 offered a word of encouragement for the chaos that is happening all over the world. His lesson simply entitled, “Count Your Blessings.” He reminded us that the rapture is a real future event, and the importance of the rapture. But special emphasis was placed on reaching the lost for the Lord Jesus. It was a blessing to have Brother Joshua address the Brotherhood Laymen’s League and we look forward to having him speak to the men at future prayer breakfast events. Sincerely, Deacon Eric M. Starieanna (Star) tarieanna (Star) is in the 4th grade and attends Andres Duarte in Duarte, California. She lives with her grandparents Bennie & Sheila Woods. Star has a number of hobbies such as Singing, Playing Sports, and Science Experiments. She also likes trying new foods from different cultures. She loves Basketball, Volleyball, and Track.
Star has won many awards as are pictured above for Perfect Attendance, Principals Award (Honor Roll), Academic Achievement, Student of the Month, Academic of Excellence, a real “Star” Student. She belongs to the Stem Club (City of Hope), The 100 Club (Reading Club), ATeam (Mentor program with a probation officer-Sherriff Department). Star has won the Principals Award, Reading, Basketball, Basketball All-Stars (2), Volleyball (2), Volleyball All-Stars, Second Baptist Church Children Church (Acts of Faith Bible challenge). Let’s congratulate Starieanna on being such a great role model for other students at school and here at Second Baptist. **TO GOD BE THE GLORY**
