e are frequently advised to read the Bible with our own personal needs in mind, and to look for answers to our own private questions. That is good, as far as it goes .... But better still is the advice to study the Bible objectively ... without regard, first of all, to our own subjective needs. Let the great passages fix themselves in our memory. Let them stay there permanently, like bright beacons, launching their powerful shafts of light upon life's problems - our own and everyone's - as they illumine, now one, now another dark area of human life. Following such a method, we discover that the Bible does 'speak to our condition' and meet our needs, not just occasionally or when some emergency arises, but continually.

monthly, every First Sunday, to provide the congregation with information about the Church, the Church Family, the Community, and the World.

Discover Jesus, Read the Bible!

(John 12:35-50)

People of My Flock;

W

ith a heart full of love for you, and your eternal destiny, I reach out to you with the hope that you will respond to the move of God in your mind and heart.

You can resist God for so long that you get to a place where you cannot respond. Your “No!” to God’s overtures of love and guidance becomes a settled attitude. Jesus says, “And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself” (John 12:32). The Holy Bible instructs that God created mankind with a free will, and that will can become hardened. It is not that God deliberately steps in to blind our spiritual eyes, or harden our hearts. We do it to ourselves. Would God harden your heart so you could not understand? These words say as much about human nature as they do about God’s judgment. John 12:40 says, “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, lest they should see with their eyes and understand with their heart; lest they should turn, so that I should heal them.” John quotes these words from the Prophet Isaiah to try to explain the rejection of the leaders of Israel of Jesus Christ. They even went so far as to say Jesus was possessed by Satan, thus totally writing off what He said and the miracles He performed. Jesus called this an unforgettable sin. The people did not believe there was anything to confess, so there was nothing to forgive. Their hearts were hardened and their eyes were blinded by habitual patterns of rejecting the rule of God in their lives. What does this mean for how we are to live today? Think of each day as a miniature of your whole life. Make this day a willing obedience to the Lord; say “Yes” to His guidance, and to His love and forgiveness. Do that and you will never have to worry about the hardening of your spiritual heart, just say, “I will be willing!” Amen. Until He Comes, I am Serving Christ Joyfully, Bishop Dr. Wm. LaRue Dillard Parish Under-Shepherd

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11

Inventor of Fire Ladder by African American JOSEPH R. WINTERS –

“Watching fire fighters struggle to unload heavy ladders to reach fires as buildings grew increasingly taller led one man to an invention that has saved many lives. He was African-American inventor Joseph Winters, who patented a folding ladder mounted directly on fire wagons in 1878 for the city of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. His invention allowed firemen to quickly and easily reach upper floors to rescue trapped people and spray water where it was needed. Winters’ invention proved itself in a big fire in Baltimore in 1904 that burned many businesses and homes. In the U.S. today, there are 293,000 firefighters, just over 8 percent of them African-American.” US patent #203,517 granted on May 7, 1878.

T

here is something very good and easy going on with the approach of springtime; we start to think about cleaning out stuff and making our surroundings fresh and bright. Revelation 21:5 says, Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said to me, “Write, for these words are true and faithful” (NKJ).

The Lord has given all of us the ability to “make things new” in our lives, but sometimes we like the familiar chaos in our lives. If I cleaned that up, what would I have to complain about? Just think if we cleaned up some of the chaos, wreckage in our lives and tell someone, they may be inspired to clean up some of the wreckage in their own lives too! We could eventually have a clean community just from one person making a decision to clean up a little junk. When you tell someone about how good you feel after you are done cleaning, and they tell someone about their cleaning … all things will become like new. We cannot do what Jesus did and will do, but we can start with our own backyards, closets, garages, or whatever you know needs a good cleaning! So while I’m writing this, I am thinking of what I should attack first. There are things that need to go to the shelter; “on e person’s trash is another’s treasurer.” We say in NA, “You can only keep what you have by giving it away” (Narcotics Anonymous). My prayer is that all things, even the old things, will become like new! Love Y’all Peggy LaBon

t 18 years old, Kierra “Kiki” Sheard is both wise and talented, far beyond her years. The granddaughter of the late Dr. Mattie Moss Clark is credited as one of the defining influences in the history of Gospel music, and daughter of Reverend J. Drew Sheard, and the daughter of Karen Clark-Sheard, who is a founding member of the Gospel legends, the Clark Sisters, has been a celebrated solo artist for the last decade. Kiki is not only the first of the “next generation” of Clarks, but one of even greater significance, who is reshaping the face of modern Gospel music, just as her mother and aunts did before her. Kierra label deal with EMI Gospel propelled her into music stardom—churning out hits that showed her vocal prowess and diversity, such as “You Don’t Know,” “Love Like Crazy,” “Praise Him Now,” and “Invisible.” She is now one of the best judges of Sunday’s Best gospel singing competition that airs on BET. Due to the campaign efforts of Anna Jarvis, several states officially recognized Mother's Day, the first in 1910 being West Virginia, Jarvis' home state. In 1914 Woodrow Wilson signed the proclamation creating Mother's Day, the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers.

ith Mother’s Day quickly approaching here are some of what the

Good Book, the bible, has to say about being a good Mother. Several things are commanded of Christian mothers in God’s Word: Availability – morning, noon, and night (Deuteronomy 6:6-7) Involvement – interacting, discussing, thinking, and processing life together (Ephesians 6:4) Teaching – the Scriptures and a biblical worldview (Psalm 78:5-6;Deuteronomy 4:10;Ephesians 6:4) Training – helping a child to develop skills and discover his/her strengths (Proverbs 22:6) and spiritual gifts (Romans 12:3-8and 1 Corinthians 12) Discipline – teaching the fear of the Lord, drawing the line consistently, lovingly, firmly (Ephesians 6:4;Hebrews 12:5-11;Proverbs 13:24;19:18;22:15;23:13-14;29:15-17) Nurture – providing an environment of constant verbal support, freedom to fail, acceptance, affection, unconditional love (Titus 2:4;2 Timothy 1:7;Ephesians 4:29-32;5:1-2;Galatians 5:22;1 Peter 3:8-9) Modeling with Integrity – living what you say, being a model from which a child can learn by “catching” the essence of godly living (Deuteronomy 4:9,15,23;Proverbs 10:9;11:3;Psalm 37:18,37).

o you remember . . . “One -two pick up my shoe, three-four shut the door, five-six pick up sticks, seveneight lay them straight, nine-ten lets do it again! Just a simple nursery rhyme we learned a long time ago. Yet we struggle with our memory to remember the words. Memory, the total sum of what we remember; it gives us the ability to learn and adapt from previous experiences, and build relationships. It helps us to remember past experiences, and to process and recall previously learned facts, experiences, impressions, skills and habits. Memory is the store of things learned and retained from our activity or experience, as evidenced by modification of structure or behavior, or by recall and recognition. The mind works a lot like a computer. Your brain puts in information, it judges to be important, into "files." When you remember something, you pull up a file. But memory does not always work perfectly. As people grow older, it may take longer to retrieve the files, a "senior moment." It's normal to forget things once in awhile, like names, where we put our keys, or if we locked the front door. Seniors may forget things more often than others because age can cause mild cognitive impairment. Forgetting how to use the telephone or find the way home may be signs of a more serious problem such as Alzheimer's disease, or types of dementia. Memory loss can also come from strokes, depression, head injuries, thyroid problems, or reactions to certain medicines. If you are worried about being forgetful, see your doctor. As people get older, changes occur in all parts of the body, including the brain. As a result, some people may notice that it takes longer to learn new things; they don't remember information as well as they once did, or they lose things like their eye glasses. These usually are signs of mild forgetfulness, not a serious memory problem. Some older adults also find that they don't do as well as younger people with complex memory tasks, or learning tests. Scientists have found that given enough time, healthy older people can do as well as younger people on certain tests. In fact, aging healthy adults usually improve in areas of mental ability such as vocabulary development. People with some forgetfulness can use a variety of techniques that may help maintain a healthy memory and mental skills. Here are some tips: Plan tasks; make "to do" lists, and use memory aids like notes and calendars. Develop interests or hobbies and stay involved in activities that can help both the mind and body. Engage in physical activity and exercise. Find activities, such as exercise or a hobby to relieve feelings of stress, anxiety, or depression. If these feelings last for a long time, talk with your doctor. References:

Night of Champions! “Life is sure…Death is sure…Sin is the Cause….Jesus is the cure” –W illiam Green, Cleveland Browns Running back

On March 28 th , TIP went to APU to enjoy the university-sponsored Night of Champions. This event is based on the Great Commission (Mark 16:15), designed to bring God’s message to youth using celebrities who have a public relationship with Jesus Christ.

A day full of fun, games, jumpers, and food ended with The Main Event. The Main Event included interviews with athletes, actors and other personalities in entertainment discussing their journeys in life and how they were drawn to Christ. In addition to that, former Cleveland Browns Running Back, William Green discussed his walk with Christ, while being a professional football player. Also, the Christian Rock band “For All Seasons” were inspirational and led a beautiful praise period. The night concluded with a Gospel message from local pastor and an invitation for people to make first-time or renewed commitments to God- an invitation that many took part in.

Bible Basics All Christians must take seriously our responsibility to “learn the ABCs” — learn “About the Bible in Church.” Unless we read it, study it, learn what’s in it and feel comfortable with it in our hands and on our tongues, we cannot truly love the Word of God. Instead, we’re intimidated by it, afraid of it, shocked by it or simply remain ignorant of it. Let us all be renewed in a faith that has been enriched by the gift of Scripture so we may end our worship by saying: “We were well-pleased to impart to you not only the gospel of God but also our own lives” (1 Thessalonians 2:8, NASB).

I Am the Bible

Hidden Books How many books of the Bible can you find in the paragraph below? There are 15 books from the Old and New Testaments.

I am the Bible, God’s wonderful library. I am always — and above all — the truth. To the weary pilgrim, I am a strong staff. To the one who sits in darkness, I am glorious light. To those who stumble beneath heavy burdens, I am sweet rest. To him who has lost his way, I am a safe guide. To those who are sick in sin, I am healing strength and forgiveness, To the discouraged, I am a glad message of hope. To those who are distressed and tossed about by the storms of life, I am an anchor, sure and steadfast. To those who search for salvation, I reveal the Savior of the world. I am the Bible.

I once made some remarks about hidden books of the Bible. It was a lulu - kept some people looking so hard for facts and studying for the revelation that they were in a jam. Achieving Your Financial Goals – Step #3 Establish a Budget

B

udgeting is simply designing a plan to ensure that your expenditures do not exceed your income. You can create a budget by totaling the income you and your family receives on a monthly basis. Include your earnings from your job and income from other sources, such as dividends and rents from property you might own. Then list your fixed expenses (e.g., mortgage payment, car payment, insurance), flexible expenses (e.g., groceries, utilities, transportation costs) and discretionary expenses (e.g., saving, entertainment, gifts). If your income exceeds your expenses, you are doing fine. If your expenses exceed your income, look for costs you can reduce or cut. Spending less than you earn is the key to being able to save and invest money. Continually look for ways to cut your expenses or increase your income. If you cannot reduce your expenses, consider getting an additional job to increase your income.

Verses' that are not in the Bible Several popular sayings can put biblical literacy to the test. For example, the phrases below aren’t in Scripture — although some come pretty close:

Pentecost Passion

“Money is the root of all evil.” (According to 1 Timothy 6:10, “the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.”) “Cleanliness is next to godliness.” (The closest teaching to this might be in James 4:8.) “God helps those who help themselves.” (This proverb originated in ancient Greece, not in Scripture.) “God moves in mysterious ways.” (A verse kind of like this is Isaiah 55:8.) “Spare the rod, spoil the child.” (British poet Samuel Butler coined this phrase, which could be a paraphrase of Proverbs 13:24.) “This, too, shall pass.” (This occurs nowhere in the Bible but has been linked, incorrectly, to King Solomon.)

“Love the sinner, hate the sin.” (St. Augustine originally came up with a version of this phrase.) “Charity begins at home.” (British theologian John Wycliffe is credited with this saying.) “God will never give you more than you can bear.” (This seems to be a misinterpretation of 1 Corinthians 10:13.)

Nineteenth-century evangelist Dwight L. Moody was walking down a New York City street, thinking about a sentence he’d heard: “The world has yet to see what God can do with a man who is wholly yielded to him.” Suddenly Moody felt a great yearning and cried out, “O God, make me that man!” He was so overwhelmed with God’s love and with heartfelt passion to reach lost people that he had to stop at a friend’s house to rest. In Birth of the Body, Ray Stedman says this is what Luke is talking about when he describes the events of Pentecost. “When John the Baptist predicted that Jesus would come and baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire, he meant that there would be an unexplainable passion about the church.” As we feel the Pentecost passion, let’s yield ourselves wholly to God and see what he does with us!
