Sometimes it’s important to work for that pot of gold. But other times it’s essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide on the rainbow. Second’sdown Gazette

Remembering 9/11/01

ear Lord, loving Creator of us all, we remember with great sadness those whose lives were taken on September 11, 2001. We hold up to you the victims’ families that they may know, despite their pain, that they can find solace in your loving presence. Help them bring their hurting hearts to you, realizing that your everlasting arms can bear them up and that they cannot be separated from your abiding love. Please assure us that even though we cannot understand such horrible deeds, you can bring good out of evil, justice out of injustice and righteousness out of unrighteousness. Therefore, confessing our human weaknesses, our grief and our struggles to make sense out of this world, we cry out with the psalmist: “Rise up, O LORD; O God, lift up your hand; do not forget the oppressed” (Psalm 10:12, NRSV). Strengthen our hearts, this day and every day. Amen.

Again with A Magnificent Obsession! Sons and Daughters, Grace to you! When you look back over your life, are you disturbed by the foolish mistakes and decisions you’ve made? Many Christians are held hostage in the present because of their foolish decisions in their past personal lives. I have good news to share with you. Forgetting the things behind is only half of the miracle of overcoming our yesterday. Every one of us needs a magnificent obsession to draw us to the future with pleasure. If you are caught in the debilitating web of yesterday’s mistakes and decisions, I encourage you to let God’s words through Paul capture your mind and heart, and hold on. “Reaching forward to the things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:13b-14). This compelling vision was instigated and inspired by the Holy Spirit. His purpose is to keep the Saints focused on Christ Jesus and the next phase of the race in our Christian life. His goal is our growth in Christ and the prize of maturity in Him. Again, a closer look at the words heightens our appreciation for the magnificent obsession. The words “reaching forward” depict a runner stretching forward, leaning toward the goal. The Greek word for “goal” is skopos from skopèo “to look at” (from which our English word telescope comes). It denotes a mark on which to fix the eye. The word “prize” is fascinating. It is brabe-ῖon, the award for finishing the race. Thus, the Saint’s “high calling” for running the race of discipleship is Christ. He is the judge who will reward the crown (II Timothy 4:1, 8). The “upward call” into heaven when a Christian passes away is the ultimate fulfillment of the eternal life began when we were “born again.” When you truly consider and internalize this teaching within by being filled with the Holy Spirit, your life will magnificently be focused on Christ and mightily empowered by the Holy Spirit. He will make you sure of your upward call to heaven and through your life on earth. In the Greek, “rhema” is used for “Word” rather than Logos. Christ is the eternal Logos, the ultimate Word of God. Amen. Until He Comes, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully,

Bishop Dr. Wm. La Rue Dillard Parish Under-Shepherd

attie “Butterfly” McQueen was an African American actress, using the term, African American because of the era. She was born on January 7, 1911, and made her first appearance as Prissy, Scarlet O’Hara’s maid in Gone with the Wind.

The first time the movie premiered, McQueen could not attend because Blacks were not allowed in movie theaters then. However, McQueen changed the world with her acting, uttering her famous words: “I don’t know nothin’ ’bout birthin’ no babies!” While people enjoyed her performance, McQueen did not enjoy playing the part. She felt it was demeaning to Black Americans. She also had a role as Beulah on a popular radio show that sparked controversy throughout Black communities. She is quoted as saying, “I didn’t mind playing a maid the first time because I thought that was how you got into the business. But after I did the same thing over and over, I resented it. I didn’t mind being funny, but I didn’t like being stupid.” McQueen declared herself to be a “Full Atheist,” saying, “I don’t believe in religion, and I am certainly not a Christian.” She often told people just like her Black people were free from slavery, she was free from Christianity. America was heaven to her when it was clean, it was beautiful. McQueen died in 1995 from burns she sustained while trying to ignite a kerosene heater in her home. What an awful way to die, and a shame that she would never experience the glory of God in Heaven. Let us pray all unbelievers. Amen! Blackthen.com

I

belong to God! Like the song says; “From the top of my head to the sole of my feet, I belong to God!” How do I know the above statement is true? Ephesians 6! I’m strong in the Lord and in the power of His might, because I have been able to withstand the darts of the evil one lately, which means I am getting stronger!

On any day of the week, the devil is making his presence known by causing as much chaos as he can in a Christian’s life. This is not just my story, but it’s the testimony of countless people of faith. God has in His Word a way to combat those pesky demons, casting them as far as the east is from the west. Ephesians 6:10-18 reads, “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil, for we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities; against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, and against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the whole armor of God that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all to stand, stand therefore, having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; and above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the Saints.” I love you the Agape love,n

GG Bailey Clean-Up

S

aturday, August 27 , 2016 marked a day of discovery that Chosen Vessels embarked upon as they vowed to clean some rooms and the corridor of GG Bailey hall. With the help of some of Monrovia’s dedicated volunteers from the Volunteer Resource Center the “clean-up” effort was a success! With the assistance of Diakona Nadine Harris, Sister Apryl Harris, and Mother Lois Gaston, a united effort was made to maximize the space that these rooms held and organize the contents of said space. In doing so, Mission of Mercy has additional space to store donated items for their various drives, especially the Thanksgiving Food Drive that is rapidly approaching and Chosen Vessels cleared space to store donated materials for community outreach and our homeless outreach initiative. With the help of dedicated City of Monrovia staff like Kerri Zessau and her husband, who volunteered to take all salvageable items and sell them at their local yard sale and donate all proceeds back to the church. All in all, the day was a huge success and one of the first steps of re-establishing Second Baptists’ commitment and dedication to our community and community outreach. th

ost gospel music fans know the smash hit “Praise Is What I Do”—the title track from Shekinah Glory Ministries’ 2002 gold-selling album—much better than they do the name of its writer, William Murphy, III. But that is about to change, and in bold and dramatic fashion. With the release of William’s own label debut album, The Sound, the world was able to now hear the amazing voice and deeply moving songs of a young man who already is one of the brightest lights in the firmament of contemporary praise & worship music. Possessing a voice that is nothing short of stunning, in range and dynamics, and with seasoned hit-makers flare for instantly accessible, engaging and unforgettable words and music, William makes music that crosses all lines of age, creed and color. William Murphy, III makes music for the masses. William Murphy, III was given a solid foundation in both the church and its music, as his father and grandfather were musically gifted, and the elder a Baptist minister and his son a minister and bishop. “Church is what I’ve known all my life,” he says. “My family is rich in the heritage of the Gospel, in spoken-word ministry as well as music. That was the foundation I grew up on.”

The Zika Virus

ou probably have heard about the Zika Virus, so let's share some information! The virus was first discovered in 1947 and is named after the Zika Forest in Uganda, with the first human case of Zika being detected in 1952. Since then, outbreaks of Zika have been reported in tropical Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands. Before 2007, at least 14 cases of Zika had been documented, although other cases were likely to have occurred, but not reported. Because symptoms of Zika are similar to those of other diseases, many of these cases may not be recognizable. The virus is mainly spread by mosquitoes. Mosquitoes from tropical areas and South Florida are causing the virus to spread across the United States. According to the CDC, the virus can cause birth defects in pregnant women which caused the agency to issue a travel warning for pregnant women. Although cases have been verified in Florida, the CDC does not expect them to be widespread. In January 2016, the World Health Organization declared birth defects linked to the Zika virus an international public health emergency. The declaration might speed up research about the suspected connection between the virus and cases of microcephaly in babies of infected pregnant women. What are the symptoms of Zika? The disease can cause fever, rash, joint pain, and redness in the whites of the eye. Most people won’t know they have it, because the vast majority has no symptoms at all. There’s no treatment for the Zika virus, and most people with symptoms do well with over-the-counter medications for the aches and pains brought on by the virus; and the virus usually runs its course within a week or so. No vaccine is available at the present, but the National Institutes of Health announced on August 3, 2016 that it has begun testing for a Zika vaccine in humans. In summary, what we know: Zika is spread mostly by the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito. Aedes mosquitoes are aggressive daytime biters and can also bite at night. Zika can be passed from a pregnant woman to her fetus. Infection during pregnancy can cause certain birth defects. There is no vaccine or medicine for the Zika virus right now. Zika can be transmitted through sexual intercourse. Zika may be transmitted through blood transfusion (very likely, but not confirmed). Since there is no vaccine to prevent Zika, the best way to prevent the spread of the virus, is to protect yourself from being bitten by mosquitoes. To treat the symptoms: Get plenty of rest. Drink fluids to prevent dehydration. Take medicine such as acetaminophen to reduce fever and pain. Do not take aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). If you are taking medicine for another medical condition, talk to your healthcare provider before taking additional medication. http://www.cdc.gov/zika/about/index.html
